Brilliant book that touches and teaches
This is a brillant book, tracing a young kid's passage through family violece, addiction, pain, and love. The narrator blends the child's immediacy with the adult's wisdom, both touching you and teaching you. It's a real story that engages, reaches into your heart, and reminds you of your own pain and strugges. I love this book. Lucy is a winner, defying all odds--like David Copperfield, but from the Bronx! I can't remember when I read book I liked this much and that stayed with me this long.

Brilliantly original, moving and funny
Nora Eisenberg has written a book about growing up that is both achingly moving and hilarious--quite a feat to pull off! The small vignettes about her childhood gave me entrance into her family and neighborhood, and more than that, into life in New York in the 40's and 50's. I loved the honesty and compassion, the beauty and humor on every page of the book. A delicious read!

"This Girl's Life"
The "War At Home" is a beautifully written menoir-novel of a child, Lucy, struggling to grow up in a chaotic home where her parents are not up to the job in which they find themselves. The author writes in the child's voice with sensitivity and humor, the challenges growing up in a disfunctional family. The bond between Lucy and her brother Nicky is particuarly poignant, as they each find different ways to cope with their family's plight. The author, also, is adept at presenting a balanced picture of her parents, their strengths and weaknesses that gives depth to the story. I loved this book, and reccomend it highly. It stays with you long after you are finished with it.

The faith that enables love to flourish
In the most unlikely of places love grows. In New York at the beginning of Stalin's reign, Tatanya's love cannot be bought in this historical novel about Russian immigrants who have to make it by their wits in their new homeland. Meanwhile, Tatanya's brother is trying to survive in Stalin's Russia when love slips upon him and flourishes in spite of poverty, oppression, and his sometimes waning faith. From the beginning of this story when the Russian soldiers crash into the peaceful everyday lives of Tatayana, her parents, and her brother, Yuri, I could not put this love story down.

A Gourmet Feast of Historical Fiction
If you've hesitated to even nibble at the edges of historical fiction, the Sowers Trilogy should be your first taste! You are guaranteed a gourmet feast with Bonnie Leon's sharp imaging and heart stopping gift of holding tension. Journey with Yuri and his sister Tatyana on their separate quests as they are assaulted by emotional and physical tests and temptations. You will go along not as a spectator, but as a participant.

You will cringe as Yuri confronts the danger of survival in a Russia gone mad with the lust for supremacy. You will weep as he is immersed in the devastating results of a country's passion turned sorid. And you are sure to stand and cheer as obstacles are overcome and enemies of body and mind are defeated.

You will ache with Tatyana as she struggles to survive against odds of her own making. Rejoice at her amazing good fortune in a new, untamed country. Live with her in the pristine frontier of a burgeoning Pacific Northwest. Laugh, love and weep with her as she grasps at memories of Yuri and her beloved Russia while she balances on the edge of letting go.

Bonnie Leon is a master storyteller. Go ahead. Treat yourself.

Wonderful!
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see more of Reynolds, Elena and Yuri. The book had a lot of realism for the hardships people in the concentration camps have. I can't wait to see if Yuri and Elena find each other again, and if Reynolds finds himself, and someone to love. I was very happy with te way the book ended and Tatyana and Dimitri's love. But the book didn't talk much about not marrying unbelievers.

big help for brothers and sisters
I think this book helps big brothers and sisters to acept the new child and show that they can help the new child to understand the world around them. I really like the realistic illustrations, because it helps to understand the story, it shows good behavior and it is very interesting!

great for big brother or sister
My 2 1/2 year old loves looking at all the pictures and talking about how he will soon show his new baby how to drink from a big boy cup, crawl under chairs, share dad's lap, and open birthday presents. Perfect length for toddlers to enjoy. Wonderful book!

SOOOOO Special
Even though my children are 9 and 13 now, they still remember how this book spoke to my 13-year-old when her younger brother was born. Anna Grossnickle Hines captures the gentle wonderment and protectiveness that so many children initially feel toward "their" new babies. Sure, later on, there may well be rivalry, resentment, feeling less unique, etc., etc. (and there are plenty of books around that attempt to deal with this). But, I am so grateful that the author has so simply, respectfully, and eloquently recorded the essence of that very special relationship between two siblings, as it is born.

I thought I had it solved, but. . .
Just when I thought I knew how it would end, the author threw me a curve ball. Even after the second read, I saw no warning signs pointing to the ending. This is a delightful read, quick and easy, yet it demands your complete attention. I can't wait for the next book.

Fantastic!!!
I couldn't read this book fast enough! It kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. Great read!!!

It will leave you wanting more!
This book was great. I've been dying to get it and I finally did, read it in a day. If you are looking for a page turner this would be the book to buy! I hope they make a movie!! The amount of suspense leads you down the beaten path while the book turns the other way. This book was exactly what I was looking to read.
A must have for any reader!

Tales from the Brothers Grimm and the Sisters Weird

Weird in a Wonderful Way
As a teacher looking for some quirky rewrites of traditional fairy tales, I was thrilled to have stumbled across Vande Velde's collection. Every story is twisted, some in silly ways, and some in darker ways, but no matter what the twist, the book is great for read-alouds or for reading alone. The "commercials" dispersed throughout the text contribute to the overall flow of the text. Children and adults alike will find this entertaining. The stories are also a great catalyst for students' revisions of fairy tales, and demonstrate the value and the pleasure of retelling old favorites from unexpected perspectives.

Fun fractured fairy tales
Vivian Vande Velde neatly skewers some traditional fairy tales in this collection of stories; most are moderately good-- entertaining, but not terribly deep. This anthology would have joined the ranks of the mediocre if not for one absolutely clever and wonderful retelling of Rumpelstiltskin called "Straw into Gold." This one story makes the whole book worth getting. The others are good, but "Straw into Gold" outshines them by far.

There are many fairy tale retellings; those of Robin McKinley (Beauty, Rose Daughter), Donna Jo Napoli (Spinners, Zel, The Magic Circle) Mercedes Lackey (The Fire Rose, The Firebird) and Patricia Wrede (Snow White and Rose Red) are particularly worth checking out.

Wonderfully twisted tales!
This was a wonderful book! I especially liked STRAW INTO GOLD. It was really good with a bit of a surprise ending. It had just enough magic, not too much like other fairy tales.

Why would you dip your socks in Kool-Aid?
If you love wildly-colored socks, space-dyed yarns and color, this book is for you. You can learn handpaint techniques for yarns, then follow it up by knitting up a pair of your own wild socks. Random or pattern-dyed yarns are really popular right now with knitters and the recipes and methods for making socks like these are scattered all over the Internet. Nice to have the methods together here on one book.

If you don't dye your own sock yarn, this is a good book for visualizing the effects with space-dyed yarns. Not all patterns or texture stitches look good with varigated yarns, so having examples knitted up is helpful. I don't dye yarn, but I like to look at the effects people achieve, so this book isn't my favorite, but if you like to dye wildly-colored yarn, this one's for you.

This book is perfect for me
While I cannot judge for others, this book was a perfect match for me. I love knitting socks, I have just learned to spin, and I love dyeing. The only (slight negative is that only spindle spinning is covered but there are plenty of other books on spinning). The range of information on creative dyeing, spinning and plying for knock-your-socks-off socks is here, and with great illustrations. Every sock is an inspiration and you are walked through several methods of dyeing, how to process the results to spin beautiful yarns and several ways of knitting socks. No other book has all of this in one place.

The best manual out there for informal and fun dyeing!
I teach spinning and dyeing classes, and I have often used this book as a manual for those classes. Many people are afraid to try dyeing, especially after they read most other dyeing books (_Color in Spinning_ comes to mind) that are very technical and intimidating. Usually dyeing books are written for the engineer, rather than the dabbler. All you really need to make beautiful dyed yarn and roving are some acid dyes, vinegar, water, and an oven. Dyeing is all about exploration, serendipity, and enjoyment of color, not worrying about depth of shade or how many tenths of a gram of dye to put in a stock solution. It's really terribly simple. This is the only book I have ever found that celebrates that simplicity.

This book is clearly and cheerfully written, with excellent illustrations and an enthusiasm that makes you want to dive right in. The information on spinning painted roving is also exceptional. I haven't even tried the sock patterns yet (they seem to be thorough and walk you through lots of different options like afterthought heels and other ideas I haven't seen many other places), but this book is worth it for the dyeing information alone.

Witch's Sister
Witch's Sister was a great book. It was about a girl named Lynn and she was trying to find out if her sister was a witch or not. I recommend this book to anyone that likes books about witches or mystery books.

One of the best witch books ever...
I think it's kind of sad that this author has fallen prey to the trap of writing SERIES books like the Alice series. This is one of her older books, and although it has a few sequels, it is one-of-a-kind and does not have that "first of a series" production-line quality that has ruined children's literature. Highly original, truly scary, richly evocative...a wonderful justaposition of creepy magic and mundane suburbia. A modern classic of sorts.

I loved it!
I first read this book when I was in third grade. Now I am in high school and it remains one of my favorite books. I read it over and over again. These books are perfect for younger kids. The rest of the witch books by phyllis reynolds naylor are just as good and have more adventures with Mouse and Lynn fighting against Ms.Tuggle.

The Absolutely True Story...
The Absolutely True Story' is about two twins, a girl named Alison and a boy named Lewis, that have an unforgettable vacation with their new next door neighbors. Early in July the Rupes, a family from San Francisco, moved in to the empty house across the street from Alison and Lewis. The family included a boy about the age of Alison and Lewis named Harry, his mom, dad, and two younger siblings, Ariadne and Billy. After about a week, Lewis and Harry became good friends with Alison tagging along sometimes but mostly she played with Ariadne and Billy. At the end of July when the boys had grown very close, the Rupes invited Lewis and Alison to drive to Yellow Stone Park with them. They invited Lewis to come along just for fun, but they said Alison must be willing to baby sit the younger kids once in a while. Alison was delighted and said she wouldn't mind at all baby sitting the kids. Right as the Rupes were pulling out of the driveway to drive for four days to get to Yellow Stone Park, two men from the motor home company stopped them. The two men said there Mr. Rupe was so mad that without warning he just backed up and drove off leaving the two men standing in their driveway. After a few days, Lewis and Alison noticed that the two men from the motor home company had been following them. More days pass and Lewis and Alison begin to become scared because they saw the men snooping around the motor home. Each day the twins became more frightened and they had a good reason to be. This simple trip to Yellow Stone Park will turn into a vacation they will never forget.

I feel as though I could be the Alison in this story. I have a brother though he is older than I am, and I have a younger sister. We both have to baby sit younger children. (I baby sit my sister and she baby sits Ariadne and Billy). In the book Alison sometimes feels overwhelmed by her responsibility for taking care of Ariadne and Billy and I sometimes feel the
same way about taking care of my sister. I also relate to Alison because I have a friend, whose mom lets her eat anything and everything she wants, to say it plainly she is very spoiled just like the Rupe's kids.

The Absolutely True Story' is a very good, exciting, and mysterious book. I had a great time reading it. My favorite part of the book is when the two men from the motor home company were following the Rupes and snooping around their campsite. I kept asking myself "What on earth are they looking for?" This was a mysterious, funny, and very frightening part of the book. If I could change a part of this book I would probably change the scenery. I would have the Rupes, Alison, and Lewis take a plane to France to see the sites and have people from the motor home company follow them around Paris where it is more exciting and much larger.

I recommend The Absolutely True Story' because it is a well-written, mysterious, and adventurous book with lots of funny and scary scenes. I'd also recommend it because it actually relates to everyday life in the real world. I'd recommend it to 10-12 year olds because it would be hard for a younger kid to comprehend all the words in this book but the book might be a little boring for kids over 12. The Absolutely True Story' is a very good book. I really enjoyed reading it, and I recommend it to anyone from 10-12 looking for a great, mystery book.

Good story...great author
This book was really fun to read. The plot was great, and the characters were easy to identify with. It was suspenseful, and the ending was fun. I liked how the characters worked together to solve this despite their differences. It was really neat.

Very exciting and dangerous,it was very good.
This book is about a very "lucky" boy who gets invited to go to Yellowstone Park with the Rupes! There's just one thing,he doesn't know what's going to hit him! It all begins when Mr. Rupe can't drive worth beans in the 4 parking space long R.V!The things in are normal life probably wouldn't even be close to this but not including that it was a "very very" good book!

Better than some other "sharing" books
I've seen my share of "sharing" books that attempt to teach kids sharing, and this is one of the best. Unlike some "sharing" books that teach kids that it's OK to be selfish, this one models good behavior while at the same time showing that when the brothers are selfish, they hurt the other brother's feelings.

The illustrations capture in exquisite detail the facial expressions of the children, so there is a lot more to this book than the written text. Children especially can read the subtext from the illustrations. Even small children recognize the mixture of surprise, frustration, and hurt that plays across the little brother's face as his big brother tells him he can't play with his truck.

Best book for brothers!!
I bought this book when I was pregnant with my second son. By the time my older son was 2 1/2, he was reading it to his one year-old brother by memory!! The pages have been taped and retaped, they are so well-read!! The illustrations are exquisite! The story is beautiful!! What a sweet, sweet story that celebrates the love between two brothers!

Big Brother, Little Brother
I loved this book and so did my 4 year old and 2 year old. It seems like they can both really relate to the brothers in the book. It is a book that they want read over and over. The illustrations are fabulous!

The chocolate sundae mystery
I read The Chocolate Sundae Mystery.
I thought it was a very good book because it was easy to read. It is a "boxcar children mystery" and the ice cream disappears and all the whipping cream has gone sour in Greenfield. I think 8 to 13 ages should read it.

Excellent Mystery.
THE CHOCOLATE SUNDAE MYSTERY is the second best Boxcar Children book besides THE HOME RUN MYSTERY & THE MYSTERY IN THE EMPTY SAFE. I can't decide between those two. I love the excitement and suspense. I was mad when my dad said it was time to go to bed right at the climax. A+

NATALIE'S Review
