For most of us this is the first opportunity to hear the voice of Bruce Di Marsico, developer of the Option Method. The Option Method is a process using a handful of questions to examine our beliefs, more particularly those beliefs we have about why we are 'unhappy' (letting that word stand for any emotional state we don't like). On this tape, Bruce Di Marsico speaks about what might be called the Option philosophy lying behind the Method. The radical suggestion is that, on examination, we can find no valid reasons for being unhappy. Yes, put like that it may sound a bit glib. That's one reason it's a delight to hear the case being made in Bruce Di Marsico's voice, a voice which conveys an inherent reasonableness, as if it were the voice of what common-sense ought to be.

I'm considering setting up as a childrens entertainer, so I purchased a good few books. This is without doubt the best of the bunch.

The book covers lots of aspects of clowning, gives great ideas, and is an easy read.

The only downside is that it does not have space to go as in depth in some areas as I would of liked - but there are plenty of speciality books to do so.

Every hobby has one or two definative books. This is it for clowning. Everything I wanted to find out and more. Like any good reference book it started me down the path and I have read several books recommended.

If you are going to get into clowning you need this book.

Having read four customer reviews of this book, I might have had high expectations. Maybe I didn't realize it's true value at first, but after learning various skills, you may want to try others, which didn't catch your interest at first. Then you realize how powerful a tool this book is.

Until now I've focused on juggling and unicycling. The book not only teaches you how to ride a unicycle, -it also provides a lot of amusing variations. Though I knew how to ride before buying this book, it taught me how to ride in a very ridiculous way, seemingly out of control. I've experienced a tremendous effect when acting upon these hints in front of an audience. ...

Just recently I grew interested in the stiltwalking sections and made a pair of wooden tie-on stilts. I'm not exactly an engineer, but following the instructions, all I needed was a saw, some wood, a drill, some glue, some bolts and screws.

Reading the ingenious instructions given sometimes make me laugh out loud, thinking of how it would work in real life. The illustrations are really amusing, and I do enjoy all the hints on starting a clowning business. Lots of detailed information.

Also, the book is packed with numerous jokes and material that can be used for shows. The next stage for me will be learning how to twist balloons into different animal shapes.

I was actually looking for a book on how to put on clowns' make-up for my unicycling. This book is all you need to know about various types of make-up for various clown types, plus so much more. If you're thinking about clowning, either for fun or for money, I highly recommend this book!

Being someone who ordinarily uses movies purely for escapism & entertainment value,I was a little skeptical as to the notion of film as art.However, after reading Mr. Hinrich's book,I am forced to rethink my sensibilities on the subject.Because now,I am able to enjoy films on multiple levels, and appreciate the way he was able to cater to the layperson and the expert alike.This book (if comprehended properly) literally teaches you how to critique movies & films from both the film student and casual viewers standpoint.Mixing both professorial as well as easily understandable terminology & nomenclature,Film & Art hits the mark accurately.If Gene Siskel were still with us, I'm sure he'd give it a well deserved thumbs up.

Film & Art is a very enjoyable and informative book. It is written clearly and skillfully and is engaging throughout. It offers many insights and provides quidance on analyzing film. Thank you Mr. Hinrichs, I have become a more critical viewer of film!

I'm a new student of military history and I'm particularly interested in the Vietnam War. This book came highly recommended and I'm glad that I have read it. It is by far, one of the best Vietnam books I have ever read. I have recommended it to my fellow students. Major Norton has done a great job of telling the story of his Force Recon Marines!

I've read both '69 and '70. This is by far one of the best books about real experiences in Vietnam that I have read. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. At one point I felt as if I was the one hiding in the bush just 10' feet from the NVA as they passed by! A real heart pounder!

A friend of mine turned me on to Major "Doc" Norton's books about the Marine Corps, and I must agree, this Major can tell a great story! I served in the Marine Corps for 22 years and had just one tour in Vietnam. No one else can "bring in home" like this guy can. You feel as though you are out on patrol with Doc and his recon team in 3rd Force Recon Co. The best part is that he writes a sequel about his time in 1st Force Recon Company. If Spielburg had half a brain he'd make Norton's books come alive on sreen. It would be the Vietnam version of Saving Private Ryan. If readers are interesetd in "credibility" than here is a story of heroic young men in combat. Truth is better than fiction and this book proves it. Any Marines I know would be proud to have guys like Norton and his teammates, Bishop, Silva, Keaveney and Furhman, in their team. Where do guys like these come from? The are the legends of the Corps. A GREAT Book! Go out a buy it. That's an order!

This CD gives almost two hours of video clips, mostly by Bruce Cryer with Rollin McCraty, who has done much of the research behind HeartMath and Alan Watkins and many others. Though the image is small and resolution poor, it is a great help to attend lectures by these outstanding personalities through this CD. [Bruce seems to use a predominantly left hand gesture in talking. I wonder if that would indicate more right-brain dominance. When he speaks about coherence, he tends to use both hands more often.] Key points are summarised in bigger power-point slides that help you to grasp what is being said. 6 relevant questions on the use of HeartMath and IQM (Inner Quality Management)are answered in video clips by many experts. In the "Tools" section, you get guided audio exercises on Freeze-Frame and Heart Lock-in, various forms for practising HeartMath skills and "Needs Assessment" on when to do what. Internet links are given to the HeartMath websites and for more case studies and a bibliography of 48 books. The section "Getting Coherent" gives you various textual tips on being a coherent: "you", "you as manager" and "your organization". "Deep Content" gives most of the book (first edition) in text. There is a search function for these two sections. In a revised edition, I hope the texts will be based on the new edition. If Doc Childre could also appear in the video clips, maybe playing some pieces of HeartMath music, together with all the other key HeartMath personnel, that would really enhance the heart feeling of appreciation.

I have been recommending the first edition to friends in the field of management. The authors are admirable in their willingness to make a fair amount of revisions and expand on their book in less than than 2 years. Such is the speed of change! This is a very satisfying and useful book. It is interesting and easy to follow. Given many good reviews, including those for the first edition, I'll refrain from adding more praise or give any summary ideas. As Scott Shuster, the Founding Director of Business Week, has said well in the Foreword: "There is no limit to the potential of HeartMath because at root it is a simple, physical act: a mental formation, a thought with physical effects. It is neither philosophy, faith, nor belief. The essentially physical character of the practice enables its easy application across all the barriers that customarily divide humanity.... Within this potential universality lies HeartMath's immense promise: If everybody did this, what a wonderful world." It won't be surprising if HeartMath becomes as widely known and used as the Microsoft of the world of emotional coherence.

This is an important book. At some level we all know there must be a better way to be in the world. Quite simply this book, and the simple but powerful tools it provides, can help you to transform the quality of your life. It has for me.

As a former Pete Newell, Jr. player, I eagerly anticipated the printing of this book. I had heard plenty about his father that I knew he was not only a "Good Man," but a great man as well. Coach Newell, Jr. was my inspiration to join the coaching ranks, and still is. However, knowing your past helps you know your future. This book sheds light on, who I biasly feel is the greatest college basketball mind. In all the research and studying I've done over the years to prepare myself for coaching, I feel this book has given me so much more than what I have read to date. The book is enlightening, philosophical, saddening and amazingly funny. I recommend this for any college basketball fan or basketball coach. You won't regret it.

I really liked this book. I have followed some of the stuff that Pete has done with the Big Man's camps over the years, but didn't know much about Pete as a coach and his history of the game. After reading the book, I feel like I am a more knowledgeable student of the game, hoping it will make me a better coach in the long run.

So much history is covered, I liked reading the comments of other players, coaches, Pete's players. I have been a Wooden fan, but this book makes me appreciate so much more about Pete. I also liked reading the stories, the practical jokes, and just the background. Seeing how things were done 40-50 years ago, the players/athletes Pete influenced, his connections with people like Pete Rozelle, Joe Kapp, Bobby Knight, Jerry West, Cap Lavin, etc.

The title of the book is quite appropriate for such a great coach. I think the only thing I was looking for was the relationships he shares with his sons, especially after he retired from coaching.

Good book, a must read for those who love the game!

To Anyone Interested in this Book...Let me qualify myself as totally biased; yet truthful in my perception of this man, my Father. Pete Newell is both my Father and my 'celebrity' Uncle. I've been Blessed by being his son and a part of 'my' family of brothers (3), who ALL have influenced my life in incredible ways. My Father has a saying that, in fact he has many, but this one pretty much tells the story. "The fish stinks from the head down." Vice/Versa, in this case. Point being: if it's good, it starts at the top; if it's bad....well you can follow 'it' from here. My Father is just one of the most incredible people I'll ever know and I am reinforced on this by the countless souls who I run into on a daily, weekly and monthly basis...that's why I refer to him as "The celebrity Uncle." He touches people in a way, with his amazing perceptions and thoughts that strike people as.....AMAZING; yet his totally down to earth style..... blows people away. I attribute MOST of this skill that he posesses to my Mom, Florence. Now THAT was an amazing women. I can't EVER imagine having grown up in a BETTER home, than the one I was VERY fortunate to grow up in. 3 incredible brothers, all independent, smart and loving of their little brother (me) and two of the greatest parents a child could EVER have.......read the book, you'll get the program and if you don't.......it's on YOU

After terrorism came to America in 2001, there has been much talk about future attacks. What kind of person or group would do such a thing? What is a likely target? What form will it take? How can I protect myself? This book, written by a county assistant Emergency Services Director (the person who is supposed to know about such things) attempts to answer some of those questions.

The culprit could be nearly anyone. It could be a person with a grudge against a federal agency. It could be a fundamentalist religious group (of any religion). It could be a home-grown radical group from either side of the political spectrum. For some, the object is to hit a target of symbolic value (like the World Trade Center), while, for others, the goal is to inflict the maximum number of casualties.

The author also looks at the various substances that might be used in an attack. Nerve agents like VX and sarin make it impossible for nerve cells to transmit nerve impulses. Vesicants like mustard gas burn the eyes and skin and produce horrible blisters. Corrosive gases like chlorine inflame the lungs and airways. Also considered are possible bioweapons like anthrax, plague, smallpox and ebola.

There is no such thing as 100 percent total protection in case of an attack. Gas masks do not provide their own air supply, they only filter outside air. Even the best air filters will not remove all toxic spores from the air; for some toxins, all it takes is one spore in the lungs. That doesn't include the toxins that are absorbed through the skin. But there are many things to do to reduce the risk during an attack. Those who work in a big-city skyscraper could consider looking for a job in the suburbs, preferably west of the city (winds generally blow from west to east). If you live near a possible target, and moving is not an option, plan and rehearse what to do if the evacuation order is announced. At minimum, have a bag of things (canned food, battery powered radio, prescription medicine, etc.) packed and ready to grab at a moment's notice. At maximum, have a second house, fully stocked and livable, out in the country. Use secondary roads for your escape route; count on highway gridlock.

Those who want any chance to survive a future attack of any kind would be very well advised to read this book. The writing is sober, clear-headed and free of hysterics.

As an author and an editor I found this book to be an absolute joy to read. Several possible scenarios, the problems they present, and their solutions are laid out logically and clearly. I found myself checking my lifestyle to see how it compares with Dr. Clayton's suggestions for having a safer life after terrorism. His humor keeps the pages turning without letting you lose sight of the fact that the book is to be used as a tool to ensure your survival-in as much as anything can.
After reading the book, my only question was: Why can't we have someone like Bruce Clayton running our country?

This book is packed with practical and relevant information. The style is friendly and approachable, not pedantic nor academic. It's like listening to a trusted, knowledgeable friend telling you what you need to know.

Extrasolar planets are the rave of future astronomers and to receive first hand knowledge from someone who has become close to the scientists involved in the discoveries allows us, the reader, to get a detailed description of the process and history not seen before. This book is a must for anyone with even the slightest interest in the subject. Fantastic Job, Bruce.

A very timely book! Five years ago there wasn?t enough progress and news to warrant a book on this intriguing subject. Today this field is teeming with excitement and new discoveries. This book takes you behind the scenes of the serious research that is focused on finding planets beyond the solar system.

Bruce Dorminey does an excellent job of setting the stage. For the layman, like me, there are simple explanations of the more technical terms and concepts. These are welcome and wisely placed within the text, making the book highly readable. The professional merely skips over these italicized paragraphs.

As he travels the world to visit observatories, scientists and their scientific conferences, Mr Dorminey adds his own observations of the localities, the technical facilities and the personalities behind some of these remarkable discoveries. Amongst others, we follow him to Chile, Hawaii, the south of France and even the Isle of Capri!

The final chapters on Signatures of Life and Signals of Life are what this search is all about. Fascinating reading!

It is enjoyable and well worth the time to read this well written book on a truly absorbing subject.

The search for planets in orbit around stars outside our own Solar Systems is one of the most exciting fields of science today. Since the first indirect detection of a planet circling another Sun-like star was announced in 1995, dozens of extrasolar planets have been discovered.

In Distant Wanderers, Bruce Dorminey looks at the history, methods, and future of extrasolar planet hunting. He predicts, "Before the end of this new century, every schoolchild will know for certain how many planers circle nearby stars," and whether or not Earth-like planets are a rare anomaly. Like many rapidly developing scientific fields, the search for extra-solar planets has had many controversies and false starts along with the startling new discoveries, and the book presents a variety of theories and viewpoints in a fair and even-handed way.

In the first part of the book, Dorminey, an award-winning science journalist and former bureau chief for Aviation Week & Space Technology, describes methods that planet hunters have used (spectroscopic methods, astrometric detection, interferometry, microlensing, transit studies, and direct imaging through the use of a coronagraphic mask in the focal plane a camera). Although most of these methods require sophisticated technology and painstaking analysis, he explains each term or concept as it is introduced. He makes the science seem simple enough for lay readers to grasp and explains the strengths and limitations of each method.

The rest of the book looks ahead to programs that are planned for the future, including telescopes in space and larger, more sophisticated instruments here on Earth. Some of these programs are already funded and will begin soon. Others are nd ambitious ideas that may not be attempted for years, if they ever happen at all.

Dorminey explains current ideas about formation of planets and discusses the search for Earth-like planets and for chemical signatures of extraterrestrial life. Through interviews with numerous researchers and experts, he presents information on what has already been learned about extrasolar planets and gives readers a feeling for the personalities and activities involved in doing this kind of research. In the process of writing Distant Wanderers, Dorminey himself wandered to far-off places, meeting the scientists and visiting the telescopes that are searching for extrasolar planets. His reports on his travels make the book much more human, interesting, and also tell us something about the writer.

After a visiting the European South Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile's Atacama Desert, Dorminey wrote, "After a night on an observatory mountain, E-mails left unanswered and faxes gone missing seem trivial indeed. I knew that a thousand miles south and several thousand miles north, the world was racing hither and yon. But for me, at that moment, my own existence seemed as precarious as the shallow atmosphere separating us from the nothingness beyond. If only for a fleeting minute, it was impossible not to imagine Earth as it really is: an oasis in the midst of a relative void."

Perhaps you can't quit your day job to make a grand tour of observatories. If that's the case, buy this book and read it. I learned and enjoyed. So will you.

I bought this book in the mid-80s when I was a fledgling copywriter in New York City.

It was helpful in focusing on what was important in putting my book together. But not everything in this book is a hard-and-fast fact. For example, in the author's opinion, it is okay to simply have stick figures for your visuals. But every ad person I talked with said this thinking was completely wrong. The truth is, you need to have as professional-looking a book as possible, which means you need to hire, at the very least, a professional art director to draw your visual for you. Better yet, get some photos for your ad if that is what is meant to be there.

Competition for jobs is just so fierce, you need to do whatever you can to package yourself ahead of the next guy. Great ideas are not enough anymore; they need to look great, too.

In the end, I was always given the "great book, no jobs" refrain. After three years of pounding the streets of NYC, I never got a job. There was even an ringing endorsement from a New York creative director on the back cover which read "I will give anyone who follows this book's advice an automatic interview!" I never even got a return phone call from the guy.

I would recommend this book to a beginner, but with the caveat that the ideas inside are just one person's opinion, and should not be considered gospel.

A few years ago, as a college student, I had the opportunity of hearing a speaker who got his start as a copywriter at Ogilvy & Mather. While speaking, and in private group sessions, he disclosed that before going into advertising, he had just gotten his degree in Political Science, a subject totally unrelated to the fast-paced, crazy-creative, lucrative world of advertising. He bought this book, followed it to a T, built his portfolio, and was able to bluff his way into his first job in NYC. He impressed me so much, that I've been looking for this book ever since. I'm so glad that I was able to find it, (still in print, thank goodness) and am anxiously waiting for its delivery. As of December 2000, I have my degree in advertising, but I wasn't prepared for the angst of breaking into the business, and I was given so little guidance in preparing a 'book'. I think this book is really going to help.

This is one of those books that even the laziest of readers will finish in one sitting. Alright, maybe two, but I'm pioneering a higher kind of lazy.

While not written at the level of technical philosophical detail as Aquinas or Pannenberg (as another review here stresses), this text is still set apart from most general theological treatments by its philosophical clarity and coherence. This is in addition to the virtues of its serious treatment of the range of Scriptural data concerning each topic, its apologetic engagement with differing views, and its practical counsel for life and ministry. It is a great resource for thinking through major theological issues and positions. I recommend it highly.

Drs. Lewis and Demarest were two of my professors at Denver Seminary. I was particularly close to Dr. Lewis. He is one of the most intelligent yet humble and gentle men I ever met. And these characteristics come through in his theology.

This theology covers the full range of theology. Each subject is dealt with in-depth. Supporting Scripture verses and the implications of the viewpoint presented are given. It also overviews contrary viewpoints and explains why they do not adequately fit the Biblical material. The reasons for the disagreement are presented in a very fair and straightforward manner. No harsh language at all is seen in this theology.

The theological viewpoint presented is Baptist-Reformed. I agreed with the Baptist perspective before I went to seminary and moved into a Reformed view while at seminary. I present the same perspective in my book "Scripture Workbook: For Personal Bible Study and Teaching the Bible."

So I would highly recommend this theology. And if you want to study even more Scripture verses that support each position given, see my book. It presents dozens or even hundreds of supporting verses for each topic covered.

I am writing another review, as I have continued to develop myself "intellectually" over the years. I think that this book is still great because of its very good historical overviews, presentations & evaluation of many views (incl. liberal, Eastern, etc.), its strong Biblical scholarship, its attempts at relating the ideas to modern situations, etc... However I have come to see the book's major weakness. The Biblical topics deal with many philosophical issues, although not presented in the Bible in a philosophical way. Systematizing, analyzing these issues is even more philosophical (Greek), and in this perspective the authors are way too simplistic, the treatement of the topics too often very naively neglects the philosophical perspective that is necessary for understanding, solving many questions. I still very much recommend this book, but I want to say that it is certainly not sufficient for a real analysis, understanding and for giving answers that are sound enough. I think that this book would be well complemented by St Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica, the deepest and biggest Christian work ever written. However, the Summa is an ancient text that itself requires a lot of study, time and devotion. So alternative recommendation I can make as a completement is Wolfhart Pannenberg's 3 volumes Systematic Theology. Pannenberg is a German (Lutheran) theologian, (and not liberal in comparison with many German theologians), and yet the world's leading theologian. His huge 3 volume systematic theology has a deep philosophical perspective. Pannenberg's work is clearly more academic, difficult than Lewis's present work, yet definetely more accessible than Aquinas' work for those who are not read in philosophy.
