Superb
This is a thorough, well-writen, and edifying introductory chemistry book. I particularly enjoyed the chapter dealing with bio-chemistry.

Great to deal with.
Shipped book quickly and answered my concerns right away. I am willing to do business with this person again. Book in "new" condition. I am pleased.

Great book...
I am taking this book for college and it is truly very good. It covers every content for inorganic chemistry. Moreover, the fancy pictures, explanations, examples, essays ease the learning experienfce that you may entail with this book.
The supplementary website and CD-ROM are pretty helpful as well. Specially the website, I like it very much because it had 3-D pictures of experiments and bonds, which help you to imagine the reaction menchanism of inorganic compounds.
The exercise section is extensive 80 question for each section. The same type of exercises repeat often, yet they really help if someone wants to practice more and more for a test.
For someone who has taken stoichometry, inorganic naming, gas laws, bonding and basic concepts of inorganic chemistry (like me) in High School, then teh first sections might be useless. However, the last sections which covers thermochemistry, electrochemistry are quite intriguing and interesting.
Overall, I think this is a great book as I mentioned. Although I think that I would buy one edition earlier since the contents do not vary very much (but the price does!)

The Circle of Hanh
When I read this marvelous memoir for the first time, I was struck with its florid style, which reveals Weigl as a gifted poet. Weigl's journey takes him from his boyhood in Lorain Ohio, through his tour of duty in Vietham, his visit to North Vietnam in the mid 1980s, and his subsequent adoption of a North Vietnamese girl, Hanh. Though his story is riveting and painful at times, the author manages to bring the important message that sometimes beauty and pain must coexist. "The Circle of Hanh" is especially comforting to post-September 11 Americans in its message that the stories we hear and remember and relate can save us, just as the author's story has done for him.

A Revelation of a Life
I have been amazed by the beauty, honesty, sensitivity, and intelligence of Bruce Weigl's poetry for over five years now. He continues to "overachieve" in every possible way imaginable in this memoir written in prose/poetry.

The word "love" is a much abused term, whether superficially used to describe an at times tawdry sex act or whether used in syrupy tones by daytime talk show hosts. However, for me this book is really about love. About Weigl's love for his Yugoslav-American family and neighbors, his own wife, son, and daughter, the Vietnamese people, the American boys who fought and died with him during the war, and even the teenage girl that molested him when he was a little boy. It's just a really fine book of personal insight and deliverance.

I cannot believe that this book is rated 281,000 or so in Amazon's sales list. Bruce Weigl would be considered a national treasure in more educated and enightened cultures. I do not believe that you'll be disappointed by this memoir. Rather, you may find just a bit of redemptiveness for your own self in this book.

A beautifully written story of redemption
In the first part of "The Circle Of Hanh", Author Bruce Weigl is in Hong Kong waiting to board a flight for North Vietnam. The wait is an agonizing one, because the airport is terribly crowded and long lines of people spill over into branching hallways. The lines move at a snails pace. Weigl is very worried, because he must catch his flight; and time is running out. In North Vietnam a child is waiting for him: an eight year old girl that Weigl and his wife had been trying to adopt for a long time. The line slowly moves, and Weigl finally makes his way to the airline counter. He hands over his ticket and Visa, and is told that his Visa has expired. Weigl realizes that an error has been made on his Visa, because it had just been issued. He tries to explain, but is told that nothing can be done to help him. He must return to America, and get another Visa. Weigl asks to speak to a higher ranking Air Vietnam representative. The official comes and says that he can do nothing to help him either. Then Weigl makes a final desperate appeal to the Vietnamese official, explaining his mission to Vietnam. He had to go to Vietnam, and bring a little girl named Hanh to her new home. With a very brief time left before departure, the official allows him to board the plane for Vietnam. Weigl takes the last available seat on the plane. Those harrowing moments in Hong Kong cover only a few pages in this beautifully written book. Bruce Weigl is a poet, and a veteran of the Vietnam War. This book is a memoir of his life. We learn his story, from the time of his childhood; to the horrible destruction of the Vietnam War; and the devastation of his own life through alcohol and drugs. He regained control of his life through poetry and the love of his family. To redeem a life that too often had been wasted and lost, he wanted to give something of value. He wanted to give back something of what he had helped take away. He wanted to give happiness and a good life to a forgotten child from Vietnam. The story of his journey to give that happiness will touch your heart. This is a very moving memoir that I highly recommend.

Argh, Matey!
Boredom settles over the crew of the space ship STAR WARTS and Commander Toad has to do something quick. Lieutenant Lily, Mr. Hop, Jake Skyjumper and Doc Peepers are all unhappy. They've watched all the ship's movies-SPLASH GORDON, THE TOAD WARRIOR, INDIANA FROG AND THE LILY PAD OF DOOM-and read all the ship's books-ROBIN TOAD, THE LIZARD OF OZ, and SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN WARTS-and played a lot of croak-kay, leapfrog, and hopscotch. There is nothing to do and they're all going a little crazy. That all changes the day Commander Salamander and his pirate crew arrive. Commander Salamander boards STAR WARTS and takes everyone captive except for Doc Peepers. Only a little while after that, Commander Salamander makes Commander Toad Hop the Plank at sword point! Only Doc Peepers can save the day!

Jane Yolen is an award-winning children's book author as well as a writer of adult science fiction and fantasy. She's earned the Caldecott-given for the most distinguished picture book, the Nebula-given to the most distinguished writing in the field of science fiction and fantasy, the Golden Kite-given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the World Fantasy Award. She's written seven Commander Toad Adventures, including COMMANDER TOAD AND THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES, and COMMANDER TOAD AND THE BIG BLACK HOLE. With dozens of books written in many genres, Jane Yolen is a great author to introduce to young readers.

Fun to read out loud and filled with puns and sight gags really well drawn by Bruce Degen, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES is a blast to share with young or reluctant readers. The sentences are short and choppy, driving the story on and filling the events with laughs. The pirate talk, "Yo-ho-ho, me slithery-slees!" is top-notch and will inspire young readers to quote the lines long after the book is finished-if an adult is willing to read the passages in a properly piratical dramatization. The solution to the pirates, once revealed, is hilarious and makes perfect sense even to pre-readers who understand story and set-up that comes in narrative repetition.

The Commander Toad series, all seven books, is recommended for imaginative young readers who have already been exposed to STAR WARS, STAR TREK, and various other science fiction based television shows and movies. Jane Yolen is one of the most entertaining authors for young minds out there.

In space, no one can hear you get really, really bored...
Commander Toad and the crew of the good spaceship Star Warts are bored out of their minds. They have played all of their games like leap frog and croak-kay, they have read all of their books like "Robin Toad" and "The Lizard of Oz," and they have watched all of there movies like "Splash Gordon" and "Indiana Frog and the Lilly Pad of Doom" so many times that the crew is desperate for something different. The good news is that the crew of the Star Warts get the diversion they want, but the bad news is that what breaks up the boredom is a gang of space pirates, led by the notorious Commander Salamander, the Scourge of the Skies and Goon of the Galaxie, who has a new game for the hostage crew to play: Hop the Plank.

"Commander Toad and the Space Pirates" is, on a very basic level, quite silly. But young readers are going to be drawn to the relentless puns and Jane Yolen does a good job of setting the reader up for something surprising to happen (probably involving a whole lot of tongue depressers) without really giving away what the big surprise is going to be at the end of the book. The artwork by Bruce Degen is appropriate (you will believe that a frog can fly...a spaceship) and does a nice job of capturing the narrative action. This is one of those books where you trick young kids into learning a life lesson, because while their chances of going off into deep space on a spaceship commanded by a toad are rather remote, kids manage to get bored all the time (or, more to the point, they often complain about being bored, which is not necessarily the same thing). So if any youngster makes the mistake of announcing that they are "bored" within your hearing, then toss this book at them, which should solve both their short-term and long-term problems with regards to the subject of boredom.

Hershenson Scores A Rootin'-Tootin Hit!!
This excellent collection of poster images from close to 100 years of Western movies was originally sent to me as part of a "grab bag" collection of poster books from Mr.Hershenson. (For the uninitiated; Bruce Hershenson bills himself as "The Largest Movie Poster Dealer in the World". Considering the incredible energy he devotes to the hobby, the quality of his service and his merchandise, it's a tough claim to dispute.)I was never a huge fan of posters from this genre, but this book made me a believer. The images, especially from the pre-1940 movies which comprise much of the book, (movies right up to the publication date are covered), are absolutely mind-boggling in their lush coloring and craftmanship. The printing quality is easily as good as humongous art books that cost 4 times as much as this reasonably priced tome. I now buy all of Bruce's books, regardless of their subject matter, as there are always images that interest me, and I was especially excited about the second volume of COWBOY POSTERS, which is also highly recommended by this reviewer. The problem with Bruce's books is that as I keep falling in love with all these new posters, I keep spending more money on acquiring the originals for my collection. Fortunately, Bruce has these weekly auctions on eBay where I can get them at reasonable prices....hey, wait! Do you think there's a connection here? Hmmm... A great volume in a grand ongoing series that belongs in the collection any fan of movie poster art or cinema in general.

Blast from the past
From the first page to the last you will feel like a kid again .The silent posters gave me a chance to see the stars who stared in early westerns. Then it goes into early talkies. What a sight young GARY COOPER in his first western. Then it goes into the era that i saw on tv .HOPPY,JOHN WAYNE,GENE AUTRY,and others. And covering JIMMY STEWART, GREGORY PECK. To CLINT EASTWOOD and KEVIN COSNER.Each photo 100% quality.Made me go through the basement at my parents house to see if i could find my GUNSMOKE holster and gun, or my RIFLEMAN rifle i had as a kid. At least i found RIO GRAND on DVD .Dont miss this book

If you like Westerns, you'll love this book!
Much as we loved watching those black-and-white movies, the colorful posters that drew us to the boxoffice were even more appealing. You'll treasure this collection of superb reproductions.

The perfect Father's Day Gift!!
My husband calls our 2-year old son "Doodlebug" so you can guess how excited I was to find this book!

When he opened it on Father's Day morning, he was practically speechless. Of course, he and our son immediately opened it and read it! They both loved it and so did I.

The pictures are bright and colorful without being too distracting. The recommended age was 4-6, but our 2-year old sits through the reading.

It has become one of our favorite books. It's such a sweet and funny father and son book.

Sincere Flattery!
For some fathers, it is easy for forget that young children will model themselves on their parents. One of the best ways to have that reminder be a pleasant spur to being a better role model is to read this book. In this tongue-twisting, extra-arm-and-leg sporting tribute to fathers, you'll get lots of laughter and bonding. I recommend this book as a gift from a child for father's day.

Doodlebugs have four arms and hands. As a result, they can do a lot more than you or I can.

Here are some examples of the wordplay:

You will hear about "soup-and-noodle bugs" and "apple strudel bugs." To do this, you have to go to "Mayfly's Diner."

At the zoo, they eat "potoodle chips" because Daddy is a "foodlebug."

They can walk their "poodlebug" which has 6 legs and paws.

Outdoors, they "padoodle" their canoe. Also, they go for "bugoodle rides" in the park.

Looking for fireflies after dark, they play "hoodle and seek bug."

You will also learn about "tagoodlebug," "fairytoodles," "Goldiebug," "Robin Hoodlebug," "storyoodlebug," and "bedboodles."

As you can see, the reading here will make Peter Piper picking his peck of pickled peppers seem like a snap.

A good way to enjoy this book is to make up your own language and pretend that you and your child are different kinds of creatures that you both find to be fun. You may soon have a fiction author emerging from your word play!

Take off from where you are to more humorous and happy realms together with your child!

Silly silly silly.....
Great book, in the most frequently requested pile. Theillustrations are really charming and the wordplay is alot offun....unless you are reading it for the third time in one sitting!

if you really want to learn something... do this.
...BR>If you don't really want to learn something, this will be useless to you. Mr. Arnold points out that this is hard. I've been working with the method for about 2 weeks now, and I'm here to tell you that it is DRIVING ME CRAZY. But the more I work with it, the more sense it makes, and the more it is rearranging my brain.
I have worked on eartraining for years, in college as a music major, and after college, ongoing for over 10 years. I could never get the traction I wanted, no matter how I worked. And really, I couldn't tell that anyone else had either.
Turns out that I had been trained in every counter-productive method Mr. Arnold mentions in his work. A lot of horrible habits, given to me by people I trusted...
Those habits are really, REALLY hard to break. But I now believe that it can be done. And after so much sweat over so much time, I'm now certain that the level of hearing I've wanted for so long really is possible. It's really HARD, and I expect to be working on this for years. But, hey... I also expect to be a musician until I die, so it's very much worth the work to do it right.
(One last note: when I first read Mr. Arnold's writing on this method I nearly cried. It was like he'd looked at everything I was doing wrong and all the time I'd wasted and said, very directly, "You should stop that. And you should grit your teeth and do this, if you really want to fix anything." Honestly, the man had my number. Maybe he has yours. You got the guts?)

Highly Effective
Mr. Arnold offers practical advice and information to the contemporary music student. His several books present methods for learning music in an efficient and enjoyable manner. The methods were developed and refined during his many years of teaching, and are well informed by his professional associations with many of the world's finest musicians.

I have taught music theory and aural comprehension to well over 1000 music students at New York University. These future performers and composers hail from a wide variety of musical backgrounds - classical, jazz, rock, music technology, and music theater - and I have instructed them in ear-training techniques that are similar in methodology to Mr. Arnold's. These techniques have caused dramatic improvement in almost all students that have applied themselves and allotted sufficient time for practice.

In the 10 years of our acquaintance, Bruce Arnold has consistently impressed me with his abilities as a performer, composer, and educator. I share his philosophy of ear-training instruction and feel that he has realized it in a highly functional and useful manner with his books and CDs. For these reasons, I especially recommend his materials to my students, as I recommend them to anyone with the desire to expend effective hard work in the pursuit of their musical aspirations.

Klaus Sinfelt, Assistant Director of Music Theory, Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, New York University

AN INTENSE AND POTENT AWARENESS EXPANDER
This approach is highly effective and quite enjoyable to work with. And make no mistake, the perceptual skills it cultivates are not optional: every musician needs them, they are elemental to the musical ear. Sooner or later, every truly able/aware musician will wend his way upward into this refined aspect of musical hearing, but why not get there sooner if you can by taking an approach that systematically goes right for the 'jugular'? You won't mamby-pamby around in abstractions or plodding repetitions with this approach. Instead, right off the bat you will engage in a very well thought out kind of aural Kung-Fu. But not for the mere excitement of mastering exercises. The strength you build here applies directly to musical playing and composition. Go for this one.

The Chaco War

Average review score:

Almost a masterpiece
In 1932, Bolivia and Paraguay went to war over a large, flat, sparsely watered plateau called the Gran Chaco. Over the course of three years, the two armies, exhibiting constant bravery and periodic stupidity, dueled, generating at least 90,000 deaths. In this book, Bruce Farcau does a masterful job of educating the reader on what happened during those three unhappy years.

Sadly, this book (I read the 1996 edition) misses being the masterpiece it should have been. First of all, as with too many recent works, it is riddled with typographical errors. (For example, the very first page of the preface (the first page of the book) says, "In this book I have tried to pain [sic] a human face on a decidedly inhuman war.") Secondly, this book contains only one map, a map reprinted from a magazine, and its color-coded illustrations sink into near meaninglessness in the black-and-white reproduction.

That said, though, this is a great book, and well worth reading for anyone interested in learning about the Chaco War. With a quick proofreading, some better maps, and maybe a few pictures, a second edition of this book could be a masterpiece in fact. So, I give this book an only somewhat qualified recommendation.

From Little Wars Spring Big Wars
The author lavishly details each little skirmish of a war few have heard of and fewer have any interest in. Truly a war of unknown soldiers, from private to general, each dies in his own little patch of a parched hell known as the Chaco. After three years the body count reaches 100,000, fully 40% of the total combatants...and they may have been the lucky ones.

If ever there was a war of futility;started by miscalculation, maintained out of pride and stubbornness, and finally ended by the absolute exhaustion born of the knowledge that there were no more men left to submit to that meatgrinder that was the Chaco. The final indignity for all concerned was that the war could not even be ended until a Nobel Peace Prize had been guaranteed to the "honest broker" called upon to mediate the differences between the two countries.

The winners gained nothing; the losers lost everything.

Yet isn't this war in a nutshell.Futile,miserable,degrading.
Yet there are lessons to be learned from this outrage and of all the lessons, the most important seems to be that it is the "little wars" amongst the most feeble powers that incite our worst bullies to begin the bigger wars that consume millions.

Upon seeing that the League of Nations could or would do nothing about the War in the Chaco,Musellini attached Ethiopia;Hitler bullied Austria and the Japanese became sure that nothing would be done about their incursions in Korea and China. If the League could not stop the most feeble and timid, what harm would they attempt if the aggressor was bold and powerful.

The author shows the full horror of the Chaco to remind us that the "Great Wars" do not come of their own volition but as a result of the vacuum created when good men fail to act to save our most vulnerable...from themselves.

Good Description of a Poorly Known War
The author provides a very nice overview of a war that many people have never heard about. Considering that many readers (myself included) may not have an complete grasp of early-mid 1900's South American politics, the author has done remarkably well providing background information for the reader. The text is well textured but to the point, and gives one valuable insights into the motives and actions of the people involved and of the war as a whole. Excellent reading on an obscure topic.

Excellent, and at this price...
This is a wonderful resouce for those interested in ancient Mexico. Full photographic facsimilies of these codices are hideously expensive, and really, most are not in great shape. After extensive research, we have here a great reproduction of what this important work looked like when it was "fresh off the presses." It is beautiful, and in comparison to Dover's similar Codex Nuttall, this work comes with a MUCH better introduction that explains more of the text, the context, and the ideology. Readers will be able to better understand some of the religious principles of the ancient Mexicans (and there is some debate whether this book was painted by Aztecs or Mixtecs, which I won't bore you with!). It shows gods, ceremonies, the calender, and other religious iconography which is interesting, and would be a revelation for more the artisticly inclined. The visuals are wonderfully presented and all in all this is an astonishing bargain. Those with even a casual interest in New World archaeology or art NEED to get this book.

Terrific insight
This book gives terrific insight into the ancient Mexicans, their theology and world view, and their way of life. The illustrations are extremely well done, and the interpretation is on the mark. A must-have for anyone interested in ancient Mesoamerica.

Pre-Columbian Mexican Rituals and Myths
An excellent source book for anyone looking for authentic reproductions of the original that is housed in the Vatican Libray. This is a reproduction of an ancient document from the Mixtecs, around 1400 AD, from the area today known as Puebla or Oaxaxa. The project took seven years to complete as they painstakingly reproduced the Codex with accuracy and authenticity. The color plates are a delight to the eye as they depict kings, mythical warriors and the Mixtec belief system. Each plate is explained, in great detail, in the beginning of the book for your convevience. The colorful plates are intricate and exact on thick high quality paper. This is great stuff for an artist working in any medium that needs inspiration or just wants to reproduce. A good book for history buffs too.

An Important Book for anyone starting an advertising career
The book is full of case histories and self-tests.

It is written in an easy to read manner and is very visual in its layout. It mainly tackles the creation of ads and campaigns and traces the history and evolution of the creative process.

Strongly recommended to students and younger executives of advertising.

I also recommend Ogilvy on Advertsing which deals also with the professional aspects of agency work.

Copywriting course between two covers!
If you are looking for a foundation on which to build a copywriting career then you should buy this book.

It lays a solid foundation in advertising history, marketing strategy, and copywriting. Even demonstrates how to write various types of advertising. It's no hyperbole to state that it is a whole course on copywriting fundamentals between two covers!

If you are serious about becoming a copywriter, your best move is to get this book first.

This book can improve your writing...
For many years, this has been the #1 college textbook for communications majors. It imparts the principles needed for one of the most harrowing jobs in the world of business -- writing the copy for ads and commercials. (But as a matter of fact, most of the principles of copy writing are also the principles of good writing in general, so you don't have to be an ad man to benefit.) The author says, "Having a good time is one of the ways you make great advertising." And this book is fun! Even better, after reading it, you will never look at any advertisement anywhere the same way.

Good update, but illustrations are better in 3rd ed.
Well, the title says it -- I'm keeping my copy of the 3rd edition because the illos in the latest edition look soft and disturbingly unsharp. Maybe the publisher, having lost the original artwork for the 3rd edition, simply scanned a copy. Or maybe the quality got skimped when the work was made all-electronic. I don't know.

In any case, the content is fine.

Recommended: A very good book on Earthquakes.
This book provides a very good coverage on Earthquakes, from how and why they happen to their effects and safety concerns. You can learn about faults, plates, how earthquakes are sized, how much can be forecasted, how structures are affected, ground acceleration, soil conditions, etc. Though there are numerous examples from California, this is not one of those books which try to provide earthquake checklists to Californians. The level of technicality is one reason I recommend the book. You don't have to be a seismologist to understand the book, but you won't get bored if you are technically oriented. You will get a quantitative feel of concepts in addition to the clear explanations.

The updated and expanded Fourth Edition just published
The new 4th edition has a new chapter on Plate Tectonics, recent earthquake descriptions, connections with Web pages, and colored illustrative plates.Fresh historical text has been included and more help with seismic safety.
