Absolutely Stunning!
Bruce Herhsensons' series of poster books have become the bible of the poster world. The images captured are of extremely high quality and are a must have for any collector of movie materials. I highly recommend these series of books to anyone who is interested in the subject matter.

A must-have volume for any cine-buff and film historian!
This book, along with its companion volume, "Best Pictures Movie Posters" is part of movie poster maven Bruce Hershenson's exhaustive multi-volume series of books highlighting the history and beauty of what much of mainstream America has only in the last ten years begun to recognize. And that is movie posters are a "popular art" form that can stand proudly next to all other styles of art from gothic to modern, from expressionist to impressionist. Great film art borrows from all of these styles and this volume, which focuses only on posters associated with Academy Award winning movies, illustrates innumerable examples. A fine book for any collector (get the hardcover edition if you can, it's harder to find; if Amazon doesn't have it, it's available from Mr. Hershenson directly at mail@brucehershenson.com.

Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!
This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film poster history. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but true works of art. His books are filled with a curator's eye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffee table art book. Somewhere between advertising and illustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabit that imaginative and atmospheric zone where one art reflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturday afternoons and Saturday nights. How often we would go into the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the posters outside, and then return to them afterward, perhaps with nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should be subtitiled: THE FINE ART OF ANTICIPATION, for no matter if expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining.

Must for Beatle Fans
A great book to find treasures with your old LP's. To find out what version or issue numbers you might own. Pictures are extremely good! With glossy photos!!

THE REAL BEATLES ANTHOLOGY
This book is the third book of a trilogy that every Beatle collector should have. Starting with the history of VJ, Bruce has fantastically illustrated the Beatles American history on vinyl. With this third edition, Part 2 of the history at Capitol, The photo's, the adverts, and the history itself make this book worthwile in every way.

Surely, even Capitol Records themselves must be proud!
WELL FOLKS, IT'S FINALLY HERE! THE LONG AWAITED VOLUME TWO OF BRUCE SPIZER'S NEW BEATLES CAPITOL ALBUMS BOOK TITLED, 'THE BEATLES' STORY ON CAPITOL RECORDS PART TWO: THE ALBUMS' (By Bruce Spizer, October 2000). INDEED, I'M RUNNING OUT OF SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE THE INCREDIBLE WORK THAT BRUCE HAS DONE IN THE FIELD OF THE BEATLES AMERICAN RECORDS. JUST WHEN YOU THINK IT'S NOT POSSIBLE, HE IMPROVES HIS PRODUCT EVERYTIME! AS YOU ALREADY PROBABLY KNOW, HIS FIRST TWO BOOKS ('Songs, Pictures & Stories Of The Fabulous Beatles Story On Vee Jay Records' & 'The Beatles' Story On Capitol Record Part One: The Singles') WERE AMAZING CRITICAL SUCCESSES AND EASILY THE BEST BEATLES RECORD BOOKS TO EVER BE PUBLISHED ON THE SUBJECT OF THE BEATLES ORIGINAL CAPITOL & VEE JAY RECORDS! THIS BOOK CONTINUES BRUCE'S TRADITION OF IMPROVING THE BOOK WHENEVER AND WHEREEVER HE CAN. ONE EXAMPLE IS BRINGING TO VIBRANT LIFE THE "ALREADY REALLY GOOD PICTURES" INTO VERY BRIGHT, STUNNING DETAILED IMAGERY! INDEED, MANY OF THE LABELS IN THIS BOOK LOOK BETTER THAN THE RECORD LABELS THEMSELVES! THE STORYLINES AND RESEARCH ARE SIMPLY FIRST RATE. THE ARTICLES SUCH AS THE "THE HISTORY OF THE BUTCHER COVER", ALONG WITH HISTORIES/ILLUSTRATATIONS OF THE BEATLES CANADIAN AND MEXICAN ALBUMS (AND VARIOUS OTHERS) ARE TRULY A BONUS AS THIS BOOKS STANDS STRONG ON THE MERITS OF THE BOOKS MAIN FOCUS, ...THE U.S. RECORDS! ANOTHER HUGE TREAT ARE THE MANY IN-STORE PROMOTIONAL ITEMS SUCH AS ORIGINAL IN-STORE MOTION/STILL DISPLAYS AND POSTERS FEATURED IN FULL COLOR!! YES MANY OF US ASSISTED BRUCE IN HIS EFFORTS, BUT HE TAKES HOME THE TROPHY AND DESERVEDLY SO! JUST ORDER IT FOR YOURSELF AND YOU'LL SAY THE SAME THING I DID.... "I DIDN'T THINK IT COULD BE DONE, BUT THIS BOOK IS EVEN BETTER THAN THE OTHERS!!!" OF COURSE, AS WE HAVE COME TO EXPECT WITH ALL BRUCE'S QUALITY WORKS, EVERY SINGLE ENTRY IN THE BOOK IS ACCOMPANIED WITH FULL ILLUSTRATION! I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT'S IN STORE FOR HIS "BEATLES ON APPLE RECORDS" BOOK WHICH WILL BE OUT IN 2002! ...THE PHRASE "ABSOLUTELY A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY BEATLE FAN AND COLLECTOR" IS INDEED, A PRETTY WORN OUT PHRASE, BUT IT'S GREAT BOOKS LIKE THIS THAT FORCE IT'S USE YET AGAIN!

Priceless
I received "The Buckley-Class Destroyer Escorts" as a gift and I consider it priceless. Having commissioned and served as a Gunners Mate on the USS Sims DE 154 (ESCORT DIV.6) until she was converted into the APD 50, I am familiar with some of the action in the Atlantic and Eastern Areas. Being able to follow the history of the Division, after I was reassigned, was a treat. Some of the inserts, the experiences of former crew members, struck pretty close to home. They well may have been in the bunk next to mine. The photographs were great. This book contains the only photo that I have seen of the "SIMS" underway. Compiling all of the information in this book, so long after the fact, is almost unbelievable. It is, in many respects, a record of a piece of my life. Any Sailor that served on one of "The Little Wolves" should own a copy of this book.

Marvellous maritime Book
I recommend this marvellous book to all naval enthusiasts because they can easily see all of the Buckley class on it. Especially I am very glad to see all of the Captain class. I couldn't find which ship of the Royal Navy had 40 mm Bofors anti-aircraft guns on X position before I purchased this masterpiece.

AS a DE sailor, I didn't know how great our littleships were
Navy men always did there job with out asking if our ship was Special. Now that I have read Bruces book, I know now that the DE sailor was on one of the greatest fighting ships in the Navy. the history of these ships as written in this book "The Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts". The people that made the history will be the proud ones.

CAPE MAY AT ITS BEST
THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR ANYONE WHO ONLY THINKS OF CAPE MAY AS A SUMMER TOWN. THE MANY BEAUTIFUL PICTURES WILL SHOW JUST HOW WONDERFUL THIS BEAUTIFUL TOWN IS ALL THE TIME. MY ONLY WORRY IS THAT EVEN MORE PEOPLE WILL BE HERE AFTER SEEING THE TOWN IN ALL SEASONS.

What an excellent book!
I was so pleased after I read the book. I am a big fan of Cape May and I try and go often during the summer. After reading the book, I'll be visiting every season!

The book really captures the beauty of Cape May
Cape May is a beautiful town in New Jersey that my family and I visit every summer. Every time I leave, I wish I could take a piece of Cape May home with me. Now that I have Mary McCarthy's book, I can visit as often as I like. The book really does capture the essence of Cape May. I highly reccommend buying the book.

A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis: Theory and Technique
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (1997)
Author: Bruce Fink

Used price: $23.50

Eye-opening presentation
"A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis" is a much more accessible book that its factual title implies. Author Bruce Fink does an admirable job of presenting the thought of Jacques Lacan, a French "poststructuralist" who built his theory on the work of Freud. After reading Fink on Lacan, I wondered if Lacan himself was ever as accessible. What makes this book so comprehensible is that Fink bases his discussion on Lacan's own admirably simple schemata of the varieties of mental disorders. At the same time, Fink understands and explains those cultural tendencies in the thought of Lacan that might put off an English-speaking reader. And Fink's writing style is nothing short of clear. His discussion of Freud's "Rat man" case is an excellent introduction to Freud's clinical style. In short, "Clinical Introduction" is a highly attractive book whose success both enhanced, in my eyes, the reputation of Lacan, a tough French thinker, and, through the example of Fink, showed Anglo-American appreciation of Continental thought at its sensitive best.

Incredibly Useful
My familiarity with the language of psychoanalysis has come primarily through its usage by post-structural and feminist theorists. Reading this text has been like discovering a rosetta stone. The clinical examples that Fink uses has put flesh, so to speak, on some difficult and disembodied ideas with which I have previously struggled. Politically I find myself at great odds with Fink's forays into social commentary, but even this has been incredibly instructive.

A few words may say a lot
It is the first time ,in my opinion, that an ambitious attempt to approach a "difficult"discourse achieves its aim :to develop in a brief and explicit way without any extravagant simplifications a theoritical laying concerning the function of human psychic apparatus. The detailed footnotes and the lucid bibliography form one more advantage of the book. In short, although this could be characterised as an unusual attempt for the American psychoanalytic scheming ,the overall outcome is enviable. Excellent book
I have always admired Bruce Barnbaum's prints and really appreciate the clear guidance in this book regarding seeing, understanding light, exposing film, and printing. Among the useful aspects of the book are the photographs that show how control over the exposure and printing can affect the final result. This book is perfect for photographers looking to make a serious advance in the quality of their images.

Encouraging and most helpful, very clear text.
I've read many books which cover the finer points of photography, each has it's purpose and adds to my understanding. This book I felt helped find my own way to view what I want in an image. Bruce first gets the reader to explore their own likes in a photograph, getting us out of the confines of rules we've been told are required for a "Good Photograph", be free to explore all possibities not a fixed grid we tend to think of as the parameters of photography. The thing I found most helpful in this book is the topic of film and paper exposure. I've read much of the Zone System and understood it to a good extent, but Bruce takes it to a more practical level and I found I could apply his points with a much better understanding. It has made an improvment in my black and white large format work. Now, after reading this through a few times I have a much better understanding of how to use the range of the film and paper to their fullest extent. I can get most negatives to print on normal contrast paper, don't need to use contrast filters to get something to work and can get much more detail in the shadow areas. This book is wrote for the advanced photographer and prior basic knowledge will make it more usable but written in a very comfortable pace that I as an amature photographer could grasp with no problem. I feel this has saved me from many years of experimentation and let me get on with making photographs which I love to do! Greatly improved my confidence, this is the way photography should be taught, we each have our own abilities and creative aspects.

My instructor: "Wish I'd had it when I was starting out."
I am a serious photography student, albiet a green one. My instructor has been a photographer for 50 years and once ran the biggest portrait studio in Niagra Falls, NY. He has studied with Mr. Picker (BTW, the fore mentioned is rather discredited by both Mr. Burnbaum and my instructor, so if you are a "dry down" sycophant move on now.) He likens Mr. Burnbaum to the caliber of Mr. Adams: both being masters of the media. I was also truely blessed to see both Mr. Burnbaum himself and his work at an exibition here in Oklahoma. His prints are truely stunning. His book is equally so. I can't say I know a whole lot about photography -- it is a vast and imposing subject -- but I know quality when I see it, and I know more about photography after reading "The Art of Photography". My opinion isn't that important, but I value my instructor's and I think that I can safely say it's a must read for any photographic artist -- B&W, color, small, medium, or large format.

Brillant satire
It makes you laugh out loud. Hail the apostles Bellingham! From Nigel, the rabbit - to Susan, the estranged wife - Looking at life through rose coloured glasses indeed. Why hasn't a daily picked this guy up? Bellingham, a man in love with his adopted city of San Francisco. Not a bit of underdone potato - as saterical writers tend to be. Curmundgeons have a hero - a passionate one at that.

great book for gift-giving or for yourself
WARNING: DO NOT BUY ONE COPY OF THIS BOOK! You will need at least two copies whether you buy it for yourself or for a gift. Don't think you can pick this up as a gift, browse through it to pick up the highlights and then pass it along, no, you're going to want your own copy. And if you do pick it up for yourself, you will undoubtedly add it to your Christmas gift list. It's a great book for anyone; they just have to have a sense of humor. What makes it a keepr, though, is Bellingham's jabs are as insightful as they are funny, his one-liners are as timeless as they are topical. His slice of life encounters with various celebrities give the reader a fun account of the media scene in everybody's favorite city by the Bay. I practically read this book in one sitting because I kept saying, "just one more chapter" (they're short). It's that kind of book, a pick up and read anywhere book, a great "airplane book", if you will. Check it out for chuckles.

It's a book that makes me laugh out loud.
"Bellingham by the Bay" is relaxing reading -- and entertaining. It's something I keep by the bed. I'm a retired English Lit teacher and when the world grows too serious, I keep returning to "Bellingham" for its good writing and witty, irreverent insights. At my age, laughter is a great elixir. Try it!

Worth it even if you don't make your own sausage
If you're unsure about your commitment to sausage making, don't let your uncertainty dissuade you from buying this book. While his sausage recipes are indeed excellent (I've made a few of them), a large portion of the book provides recipes for using sausage in recipes. And those recipes are very good. Personally, I think the book's worth the price for the cornbread stuffing (with pork sausage and andouille) alone.

Insanely great book (if you want to make sausage)!
I really bought this book to make cajun boudin, as well as andouille sausage. My dream was to make gumbo with my own andouille, and darned if it didn't turn out perfect the first time. We've made Chorizo, Linguica, and are looking at a poultry-Thai sausage next!

To truly get the most out of this book you need the following:

1) a meat grinder (I use my Kitchen-Aid with an attachment

2) a sausage filling attachment for your meat grinder (not required, if you're just going to make patties!)

3) some medium hog casings (again, not required, if you're just going to make patties!)

4) a smoker (not required, if you're not making smoked sausages, of course!)

However! The second half of the book is recipes USING sausage, so you could just buy the sausage at the market and enjoy the recipes (but what's the fun in that?)

This is a fantastic book, highly recommended, with interesting background essays on several of the sausage varieties. The sidebar on "Hot Boudin and Cold Beer" is right on the money.

Want to make sausage? Buy this book!
While visiting from Indiana, my brother told me about making sausage. He bought a grinder and a book. Said I would no longer wonder about the fancy sausages I got in Portland. He convinced me. I bought an attachment for my Kitchen Aid, picked up Bruce Aidell's book and that was that! I bought some casings from the local whole foods store and some meat, spices and stuffing goodies and started making the best sausages I have ever eaten! This book has all the recipes and they are wonderful! Easy to follow. No pictures, but it is a book about grinding and stuffing. Who needs pictures? The book is great! Want to make your own sausages? Buy this book. Adds a new dimension to cooking...or grilling!

Great book that dwells on too few subjects.
As previous reviewers stated, this is a marvelous book, & it does have far too many Disney & Popeye posters in it. Considering the wealth of other 'vintage' cartoon posters that are around (even just searching on the net), Im suprised they didnt have a better selection for us to look at. Otherwise, Im very happy to have this book, and I'd LOVE to see a volume 2 some day!!!

CARTOON MOVIE POSTERS: Serious Collecting Meets the Fun Zone
I'll be truthful: I received Bruce Hershenson's CARTOON MOVIE POSTERS as part of a "grab-bag" special he was throwing a couple of years back. My tastes lie in the somewhat more arcane area of Horror & Science Fiction posters. What would a guy like me who covets copies of posters like BEAST WITH 1,000,000 EYES want with...harmless, namby-pamby kid's stuff? Plenty, as I soon discovered once I opened this excellent book. First-the reason I had been so unaware of cartoon posters, especially ones from the seven minute variety, is that so many of them are practically extinct. Cartoons, being the VERY bottom of the bill, were treated as 4th-class citizens, and if the studios bothered to make a poster at all, there weren't very many of them and the vast majority of those were tossed. What a shame! This book, which contains close to 400 exqusitely printed images, is an absolute riot of color and imagination that easily rivals any of my beloved fantasy pieces. Starting from cartoon pioneer Windsor McCay in 1911 and ending with the X-rated FRITZ THE CAT in 1972,(and touching on all points in between), Bruce includes examples ranging from the obvious (Disney, Warner Bros, & Fleischer) to the wonderfully obscure (there are several pages of pictures from Ub Iwerks'fairy tale cartoons from the 30s that are gorgeous, more than a little strange, and as rare as hen's teeth.) If you have even a passing interest in movie posters, it is mandatory that you order at least a couple of Hershenson's poster volumes. If you are a rabid, hopeless poster fiend like myself, they are invaluable for both reference and entertainment. Everything about them is first-rate: the printing, the choice of posters (ah, those 30s & 40s Disney 1-sheets...!)the short, inobtrusive, well-written snippets regarding the history of various posters: it's very tough to find fault here. This is the perfect gift for hard-core poster geeks and casual film/cartoon aficonados alike. Five stars all the way, and...abbah-dee, abbah-dee, abbah-dee....That's All, Folks!

A beautiful book on every level!
Everyone has their own favorite film genre (animation, action and adventure, science fiction, etc.). Next to crime/film noir films, animation is mine. The beautiful thing about this book is the unexpected. Rather than delve into the standard Disney fare (which is included in great detail nevertheless), this book includes artwork from posters from "lesser seen or only mildly popular" titles. Besides Disney, everything from Fleischer to Avery is represented, works of art that can only be bought for thousands of dollars today at many of America's high echelon auction houses. If you are the least bit interested in the jaw-dropping beauty of what has become a lost art -- the exercise of drawing images associated with the advertising of a Hollywood film -- this is the book to have. This book is part of movie poster maven Bruce Hershenson's exhaustive multi-volume series of books highlighting the history and beauty of what much of mainstream America has only in the last ten years begun to recognize. And that is movie posters are a "popular art" form that can stand proudly next to all other styles of art from gothic to modern, from expressionist to impressionist. Great film art borrows from all of these styles and this volume, which focuses only on posters associated with animated films, illustrates innumerable examples whereby despite the restrictive nature of the genre (cartoons), not all posters went in the same direction in terms of style and presentation. From Pinocchio to Popeye, Hershenson and Allen have built an incredible archive (and legacy) of images in all of his books, capturing a period (when all posters were drawn by hand and then printed, as opposed to today's method of using photographic stock and manipulating them digitally and printing them by the thousands) that would otherwise be lost forever. A fine book for any collector (get the hardcover edition if you can, it's harder to find; if Amazon doesn't have it, it's available from Mr. Hershenson directly at mail@brucehershenson.com).

Warning
Beware! This edition of the book does NOT come packaged with the CD-ROM. I don't know why Amazon doesn't specify this (somebody else's problem, no doubt). It's a great book. Just know what you're getting for the money.

very comprehensive
I checked several chemestry text books at university and found this one to be the most thorough and clear of all.

Fantastic!
I'm in my second semester of Chemistry and have used this book for both. I feel like this is a fantastic tool for learning a difficult subject. It is very clearly written for those of us who don't already have a chemistry background. While I haven't read other chemistry texts on this level, I feel that this one has done an excellent job of giving me a solid foundation with which to go on into more advanced chemistry courses. I will definitely keep this book to use as a reference.
