Real World Adobe Photoshop 7

The Ultimate Digital Dark Room Technique Book
Real World Photoshop 7 is an ultimate digital dark room technique book for Photoshop 7 users. The largest part of the book is dedicated to dark room techniques, but a good part of the book covers such things as getting the best scans, creating effects, saving for the web, making half-tones, etc.

They cover lots of issues that help me understand WHY I might want to do something a certain way. Such as, the differences between RGB, CMYK and LAB color. When I bring a digital photo into Photoshop, I almost always feel a need to adjust it, fix the levels, etc. Fooling with the levels usually causes a color shift. To avoid that, they explain how to change the mode from RGB to LAB color, and then apply the levels command to the L (luminance) channel, leaving the color untouched. I can change the mode back to RGB afterwards, if I want.

In discussing color correction, they talk about fixing the neutrals so the rest will follow and explain that in Photoshop's RGB mode, it automatically calculates the amount of CMYK to produce neutrals, but in CMYK mode, you have to manually fill in the percentages. The section on color correction is incredible.

They discuss printing from Photoshop 7, the issue of different file formats and which to use when; the Rule of 16; which settings take precedence over others, and much more.

The book is well laid out, with an easy to follow structure. Several light bulbs spontaneously illuminated for me while reading this book. This book is useful to new Photoshop users and for seasoned photographers who have past experience with Photoshop but like to keep a reference of new features.

If you wanna make money with P shop
Then GET THIS BOOK!..
You wanna make cool wacky stuff then go get the WOW! Photoshop book.
If you plan to make some sort of income with Photoshop, you would be NUTZ not to read this book. If only for the chapter of color managment, do it!

Expert Information
A wonderful and thorough job of covering topics such as tonal and color corrections, scans, color management, spot colors and duotones, prepress and the web. I found answers to topics such as spot colors in this book that I haven't found anywhere else. The authors are expert in their field and portray that information in an easy to understand format. They also throw in some humor here and there.

You'll get very comfortable using levels and curves by the time you complete this book, it is very thorough and in-depth. You'll learn how to judge what adjust needs to be made and the best way to do it. Like most full-featured programs these days, there is more than one way to achieve a task. These authors teach you the most expedient way to accomplish a wide range of tasks.

You'll learn how to calibrate your monitor, make tonal corrections, remove color casts and silhouette an image for catalog work and more. This book should be on the shelf of every serious photographer

A practical guide for affirming personal ministry
This is a great guide for the seeker or believer who has a heart to serve and needs a process to explore their personal uniqueness. The servant profile of passion, spiritual gifts and personality is a simple yet effective framework for facilitating a person to find pertinent ministry outlets. Having experienced the process personally, I found the design and flow of the course to be especially good, from the video vignettes to the huddle groups to the gift affirmation process, in which you have others help give perspective to your gifts. I also found the immplementation and leadership materials to be quite helpful in proposing and putting to work a gift-based ministry design in the local church. The only downside to the Network gift-based approach MIGHT be the "modernist" flavor that permeates the material. If you identify more with "postmodern" perspectives you might find Rick Warren's SHAPE process a bit more resonating. Overall though, a very good book that has had a signifigant impact in how churches are designing ministries and placing volunteers for service....I heartily recommend it.

Everything the Network Consultant needs to know in a nutshel
A concise and easy to use guide for consultants using the Network system in their churches. This guide succeeds in giving detailed guidance through the consultation (step 2) process of learning how to apply Spiritual Gifts. Network is an amazing system of assisting Christians in discovering and applying their spiritual gifts and talents to building God's Kingdom. These materials are definietly the means of growing transformed disciples who will transform the world through dedicated and enthusiastic service in God's Kingdom. This guide is a MUST for everyone who is a consultant in the Network Process! It give the ins and outs of consultations with example phrases and detailed outlines. I wouldn't want to consult without it!

Discover this NOW
I just completed the class this book accompanies. This was a milestone event for my wife and me. Both of us were saying "No wonder I'm like this and you're like that." I would recommend this for you not only to find your place in church (which it can help you with), but also to find your place in life. This book can focus you in on your Passion (where you should be), your Gifts (what you should be doing) and your Personal Style (how you will be doing it). This book will shine a light on you. Stop fighting your innate makeup and tendencies. And figure out just exactly what you are and how God made you.

Complex issues, disturbing insights, but very readable
There are always stereotypes to be stripped down, aren't there?

Rekdal's themes (race, how Americans are perceived overseas, how Americans perceive each other) make you think, but her writing won't make you struggle. Her essays, built around episodes of her life, are sad, funny, entertaining and insightful.

An excellent book. Highly recommended. I wish I could teach a course called "Race in America" just so I could get more people to read this book.

A Book Well-Worth Reading
Ms. Rekdal's numerous observations are personal and touching. Many Americans have struggled with an identity crisis. I understand fully the crushing power of long and brutal silences mentioned in the text. I am so glad that Ms. Rekdal is not silent at all.

captivating
i am so happy to have stumbled upon this book. This author is so intelligent, observant, witty and creative. This book was charming and relatable. i laughed aloud as some of my own personal experiences were so similar, it was amazing. Rekdal is able to put into words feelings that i hadn't been able to describe. Even if one hasn't had cultural identity questions about him/herself this book is enjoyable and some sentences read almost like poetry. Her stories are very insightful and she captures the essence of how people think and react.

Beautiful and useful
If you are used to books with line drawing of leaves that make it impossible to use as a reference, then you will love this book. It is a great study as well as a beauty. If you only have one book on the Oaks of California, this should be it. If you have many books on Oaks, this is still going to be one of the most used. Useful and beautiful!

If you love California's oaks...
this is a magnificent book. I just cannot get over the glory of the native oaks and this book captures that glory well. It covers all native species with a nice amount of detail. The photographs are beautiful. What I actually found the most intriguing was the great history the authors provide on the oaks, and the incredible ecosystem that depends on their existence. The book even provides information on parks and drives statewide where mature native oaks can be visited. I have had this book for many months now and it is one I continually pick up again and again. It inspired me to plant several native oaks at home and take inpeccable care of the one large oak (treasure) that came as an added bonus to a beautiful old home.

A nice book
I bought this book, on sale no less, at the Hearst Castle gift shop. I find it to be well written and informative with many pleasing pictures of California's native oaks. For any Californian interested in the natural sciences, this book deserves a place on your bookshelf between Lanner's "Conifers of Califonia" and Dave Arora's "Mushrooms Demystified".

Physician: The Life of Paul Beeson

Average review score:

A great doctor
Dr. Rapport has written an excellent and readable story about one of the most influential figure in modern medicine. At the same time that he has told us a facinating story about Dr. Beeson's life, he has explained some of the history of medicine during the 20th century. A wonderful book of interest to doctors and patients; here is hope for the medical profession.

A magnificant life in medicine
With great writing skill and a deep understanding of his subject, Dr. Rapport has managed to capture the essence of the life of one of the most influential doctors of the age. At the same time, the book describes many of the major clinical developments in medicine over the past one hundred years. A fine book that will interest not only doctors, but their patients as well.

Accurate portrayal of a great humanist-scientist-physician
I was a resident training under Dr.Beeson during his tenure as Chairman of Medicine at Yale. Many of those quoted in the text are old friends and colleagues. The qualities they describe, I can assure any reader, are not exaggerated. This is a compelling and readable account of a great man. Rapport has come close to identifying his essence. This is must reading for anyone trying to understand what makes a supremely good physician in a society undergoing profound social and complex technologic changes.

Rebel King, forsake all others! read this first and second!
I have read this novel twice; upon completion the first time I screamed for more! I wanted the movie I wanted the next novel I wanted to keep reading and never stop.

This is a novel that truly defines the phraze " I couldn't put it down". Romance, Combat, Good vs. Evil, History and images of a beautiful and possibly forgotten Scotland come alive in your mind.

The Bruce's have a true winner, their hard work, dedication, creativity and talent for molding fiction & history into a story that all can enjoy should be read and read again.

I hope all whom read this 1/2 as much enjoyment as I. Then I know they too will be impatiently waiting for the next installment of Rebel King.

Here's to a "Free Scotland"! Thank you for this novel.

ps: Buy two and give one to family member or friend.

Why can't I give it six stars?
Incredible. Quite simply incredible. This book is EASILY the next "Braveheart." Reads like a movie: you won't read a single page without gasping, ducking, laughing, or crying. The Bruces did a fantastic job of convincing me that their story is the only one that makes any sense. WARNING: you will NOT read the last page without wishing you already had book two in your hand!

Rebel King does justice to the Hero King
In Rebel King Charles Randolph Bruce and Carolyn Hale Bruce have done a very admirable job in blending fact, and admittedly some myth, into an extremely entertaining story that leaves the reader eager for the next part of the saga.

Though the book is a retelling of the story of King Robert the Bruce's struggle to gain the throne of his ancestors, the term "Hammer of the Scots" in the title refers to King Edward I of England, who had the Latin phrase "Malleus Scottorum" posted on his tomb in Westminster Abbey. The reader soon finds out the reason for the inclusion of the phrase in the title; Edward I is the main obstacle in Robert Bruce's quest to become King of Scots and to restore an independent Kingdom of Scotland. The book commences at the beginning of 1306; Edward has set himself up as ruler of Scotland, and his ruthlessness and military power will fall like a hammer upon anyone who opposes him.

The Bruce is also known as the "Hero King." His most influential biographer, Archdeacon John Barbour, writing in the 14th Century, described his many heroic exploits, including single-handedly slaying 14 men who had been pursuing his party, and plunging neck deep in a moat to demonstrate to his men that it could be forded. In their novel Charles Randolph Bruce and Carolyn Hale Bruce capture this heroic character well, while at the same time portraying Robert the Bruce as a person who seems real, instead of the cardboard "heroic figure" that lesser writers would have ended up with. The juxtaposition in the novel of the characters of King Edward of England and King Robert of Scotland creates very real tension that gives the reader a sample of the anxiety that must have been felt by Robert the Bruce as he contemplated what would happen to himself and all of his followers if his quest failed.

This book, which is planned as the first of four, ends in July, 1307. There is much more to look forward to in future installments, including the Scot's great victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

With Rebel King, Book One: The Hammer of the Scots my kinsman Charles Randolph Bruce and his co-author Carolyn Hale Bruce have presented a workmanlike fictional impression of the life and times of a great national hero.

A "must have" no nonsense title.
Mr. Lewin has the right idea: inform the public about how to make better choices, and you have a reader who will pass on the word.

While this book does not possess the "glitz" of most of the books of decorating ilk, this slim, informative volume is reasonably priced, and completely accessible to readers who love furniture, no matter how furniture savvy or not.

Superb guide covering raw materials through retailers
Mr. Lewin's guide was the most complete source I could find covering everything from different types of raw materials used in making furniture to how to buy from retailers. He has amassed a wealth of knowledge in his 36 years in the business and shares the information in an enjoyable manner. He covers topics such as veneering and leather quality with such finesse that the average person comes away feeling like an expert. The book was indispensable in helping me deal with retailers by giving me the confidence and power to sift through superfluous information and get to the essential facts. Mr. Lewin was even so kind as to return my phone call to answer a question I had about a certain manufacturer.

I believe this book would be of great value to anyone interested in the construction and purchase of fine quality furniture.

Very helpful, delightful read, a must 4 getting a good buy
I was well equipped to shop for furniture after reading Mr. Lewin's informative book. I took the book shopping with me and the sight of it alone made salespeople wary! (Kind of evened the playing field!) A delightfully written, very helpful text for old and new shoppers alike.
