Frederick County, Virginia: History Through Architecture

History through Architecture
This book is a fairly comprehensive look at the many old and historic structures in Fredrick County, Virginia. The main thrust of the book is to examine how the different waves of immigrants, new building technologies, and external events (such as the War between the States) have changed the construction and style of both public and private buildings in this region.

There is also an extensive catalog section (with photographs) giving a short history of specific buildings not otherwise mentioned elsewhere in the book.

"History Through Architecture" is grounded in a scholarly survey of historic buildings conducted in the late 1980s, and is much more than a look at the homes of the locally rich and famous. Ms. Kalbian's writing style is quite readable and although I find it more of a reference book than literature, I read it through cover to cover.

Outstanding!
Well written, with extensive illustrations. This work chronicles building types from the oldest structures to the latest "I don't know what I'm building", cul-de-sac clogging, atrium stretching, doctor-lawyer-indian cheif McMansions and archituctural vomitus that Ms. Kalbian kindly refers to as neo-eclectic. Read this book so Joist Hite doesn't have to spin so fast.

Required Reading for Contact Teams (and the S. Korean Army)
This book was orignially a doctoral dissertation that investigates the processes the Bundeswehr developed to assimilate the National VolksArmee (NVA) when Germany was reunited in 1990. That the plan was an outstanding success is attributed to Auftragstaktik (Mission Oriented Orders) and the idea that equals work with equals. There is a wealth of detail on the mindset of the NVA and what education needed to be in place to assist their transition to a western democracy and market economy, plus one of the best definitions of Auftragstaktik I've ever seen in military literature. Also, the rationale behind disposing of an immense amount of NVA equipment is illustrated. Interestingly, the author makes the point that the former NVA absorbed into the Bundeswehr have probably made that organization more mentally prepared for out-of-area operations than it would otherwise be. Anyone working with the new NATO or PfP countries, and especially those on a Joint Contact Team will benefit from the insights the author gleans from the Bundeswehr participants in the "Take Over". I would highly recommend that members of the S. Korean military read this book, as they may well be dealing with these issues in the coming decade. The work would, however, benefit from an update-it's been 10 years since reunification: has the Take Over worked well, or are there "two Bundeswehrs"? Given the Bundeswehr's draw-down is the influence of the former NVA correspondingly greater? Or, were former NVA targeted for separation/retirement under the current reduction? These questions would make an already superb resource even more relevant to the socio-political events in Germany and Europe. Highly recommended for military analysts and students of international relations.

Intellectual Aerobics (minus the beautiful instructor)
This is an excellent book. While the subject matter may not whet the every intellectual appetite, if you're interested in European politics (specifically German affairs), the Cold War, and military history, this book is a must read. There's no Clancy-esque story line, however the principled academic path followed by the author thoroughly explores all aspects of German military integration. The copious number of interviews only add credibility to Zilian's conclusions. Interestingly, as today's business environment is dominated by mergers and acquisitions, the book's wisdom can be appreciated by an aspiring CEO.

Action!
I've read many books by the great psychological theorists like Jung, Adler, Horney etc., but none of them cut to the heart of becoming like Fritz does. Even the other third wave analysts like Rogers and Maslow still take a more abstract approach: they suggest ideas on how to function optimally in interpesonal relationships, but don't dig very deep into the application, or the how. This book uses practices that have parallels in Zen buddhism and other sorts of experience-oriented disciplines, but doesn't praise any particular system or thinker. The presentation of the material is very simple and informal--taken from live lectures. Thus, nothing is academically obscure. Rather, its as though one is listening to a very integrated human being who is beyond the need to aggrandize himself through helping others. This is a very good book for people that wish to open themselves up to the full experience of living.

very good
the idea of gestalt therapy is very healing and the use of it in interpersonal relationships relieves many people of hang-ups that accompany the usual expectations that causes problems in day-to-day communications.

A Good Death: A Memoir on the Life of an Avatar
This book is a "must read" for seekers at all levels. It gives an unparalleled insight into the commitment necessary for spiritual attainment and gives us a rare look at the daily struggles and challenges faced by a human avatar.

Very Interesting
I am not an avid reader but I enjoyed this book from start to finish. I was interested to read the details of this woman's life lived in and guided by spiritual energy.

Combination of Contemporary and Classic
For the most part, I do not care for contemporary rhyming poetry. I think it had its time and place - it ended, for the most part, with the ROmantics, though somce, like Wallace Stevens (when he did it) and Robert Frost did remind us that occasionally rhyming poetry can still have something to say. I now add Frederick Turner to that list. He has brought from the past the very best of Romanticism's (and various other past movements' in poetry) contributions to poetry and made them contemporary. Reading Turner's poems for the first time, I was amazed at how much I loved them. They move a person in a way that people have not been moved by poetry in decades, at least. We feel as though this poetry indeed does touch us, that we can related to it, and yet discover so much more about ourselves and the world that was hidden before Turner uncovered them for us. These are poems that everyone should read, for they will remind us that the world is indeed a beautiful place to live and to uncover the small personal truths that make the world interesting and our lives worth living.

Turner writes elegant poetry accesible to any reader.
Readers of Hadean Eclogues will be drawn into the descriptions of the world and of human nature with great ease. Turner writes elegant poetry, which consistently reveals his attention to details in the environment. Each poem is carefully crafted to highlight the best means of expressing his ideas, making the merger of form and content seamless, and each poem clear. Writing , as he does about the lived world, Turner engages the reader in speculation about such questions as what is beauty? where is it to be found? , and what are the parameters of human experience and intellect? Turner's vision of the world is reminiscent of Blakes's and Shelley's , which when combined with the eyes of Wordsworth and Coleridge, yield beautiful poetry by a modern master.

Comprehensive and enlightening
I read the whole series nine volumes twice. Being a business major in school I didnot have any true understanding of philosophy, but this book really got me interested and I started reading on philosophy. I definitely recommand it for anyone interested in serious reading.

Great
This series is great. I have been reading the series over the past 3 years at irregular intervals. I am over halfway finished. It has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

A good beginning series
This is series is a good way to get involved in the thought of the world. You'll want to go further than what is discussed in the book but it is a very good start.

This volume is facinating
At one point I went throught a British Empiricist phase. This book was an invaluable resource. I've never noticed any misinterpretations of the author's original texts in this volume.

History of the Bible in English from the Earliest Versions

Great Synthetic History Of The English Bible
This book reads like a novel. The Late F.F. Bruce had the ability to make any subject he wrote on lively and entertaining. It may be surprising to some that he does not think very highly of the NASB, stating that the RSV does what the NASB translators tried to do, but did it "better". The review of lesser-know 20th century translations is most excellent, but there is the error when mentioning the lectures in England by Colet on Paul's letters. Daniell in his masterful biography of Tyndale puts this false information to rest! If you read this book and Daniell's great work, you'll know more about the history of the English Bible than 98% of the typical pew-sitters out there! Highly recommended to all!

This history is comprehensive, interesting and readable.
I found this book to be thorough and fair in its coverage of the Bible's English evolution. The writing style is accessible, fresh and even compelling. At times I found the book positively entertaining (it's a history book--and I'm NO historian). This book offers a fascinating glimpse at the lives and works of those who were often martyred because they believed that the Bible needed to be accessible to the individual (in English not Latin et al). As Tyndale said in his preface to the 1530 edition, "it hath but one simple literal sense whose light the owls cannot abide." Whether or not that's true, his passion comes across in F.F. Bruce's book.

The Most Recent Data on Hyperbaric Oxygen
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society approves 13 indications, of these, 8 are surgical indications. This is the best book right now that covers all these indications. This title presents the most recent data about using hyperbaric oxygen in surgery and for perioperative care. It is recommended for specialists as well as all physicians and interested readers.

A unique book that is written by specialists in this area from different countries. Every chapter has a long list of references, and it would be difficult to find a more complete list. I highly recommend "Hyperbaric Surgery: Perioperative Care."

A Comprehensive Text
Surgery today is rarely carried out in the hyperbaric chamber under increased atmospheric pressure, and as the subtitle suggests, it is the perioperative aspects that are the emphasis of this book. Management of the patient in intensive care carries a comprehensive chapter. Aside from carbon monoxide poisoning and the gas embolic disorders, nearly all the indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are surgical or have surgical components. This is a comprehensive text for the practicing surgeon. The senior editor is fittingly from the University of Amsterdam where the first modern non-diving uses of the chamber originated. Dr. Bakker began gaining his own surgical experience there over thirty years ago with Professor Ite Boerema, the original pioneer of hyperbaric oxygenation.
Twenty authors contributed the 18 chapters of this high quality text, which has many illustrative color plates. Sheffield et al. in a section on the physiological and pharmacological basis of HBOT lay the groundwork. Surgical infections, including osteomyelitis, gas gangrene, and necrotizing soft tissue infections each have their own chapter. Crush injury with compartment syndrome merits its own chapter, and two chapters (van Merkesteyn and Feldmeier) cover maxillofacial radionecrosis and the sequelae of genitourinary and gastrointestinal radiation. Paul Cianci has written an excellent section on the management of thermal burn. For completeness, Cramer included a chapter on gas embolism and Alessandro Marroni contributed one on decompression sickness. The problems of the non-healing wound merit two chapters (Mathieu and Strauss) and Zamboni has written of the several uses of HBOT in plastic surgery. Workman wrote the chapter on chamber design and safety. Tom Hunt and Michael Gimbel conclude with a final chapter on the metabolic basis of wound healing. All of the authors have international recognition in their respective fields. This is a perfect text to introduce HBOT to any surgeon with access to a hyperbaric chamber, as well as being a resource for the experienced practitioner.
460 pages, 1385 references.
