This was without a doubt the best book I've ever read. I could not put this book down and read it in one day. The book is very descriptive and well written. I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book a number of years ago. I've re-read it now, about five times. It never fails to break my heart.

I have been reading loads of books on Indians and whites. Lots of them I enjoy. This one I could not put down. I ordered all of Manfred's other books - those that I could - since they are hard to get. You will not regret this book. I recommend it highly! And actually, I hate this day and age --- I would have been much happier as Judith. Carol King - not the singer - East Fallowfield, Pa.

Golder is an excellent writer. He is easy to follow and takes a practical approach to common situations.

I thoroughly enjoyed part #4. It covers half the book (85 pages) and is called "horror stories". In that section, he writes about many of his real life experiences.

I read Golder's book while in the midst of a long period of conflict with my employer. Uncivil Rights opened my eyes. Golder provides the reader with a clear understanding of an employee's rights. This new understanding allowed me to formulate a strategy which led to an amicable and equitable agreement. Thank you, Professor Golder.

Golder's experiences serve as important lessons to all in this book which can help out anyone having problems at work. I was involved in a wrongful termination suit years ago and would have benefited greatly if I had read this book. For anyone who is having problems at work and needs to know their rights, this is the book. Also, the stories Golder uses were very interesting.

Adelina Patti at her height commanded a whopping $5,000 per performance in fees. She owned a castle in Wales. She was adored by the critics, composers, and the public alike. Pictures show an attractive petite brunette at times almost absurdly decked out in jewels. No wonder she considered herself a queen, albeit a fairly benign one.
This biography is another in the series of finely produced, copiously researched "Opera Biographies" by Amadeus Press. Tons of pictures, letters, reviews, apperance annals, and a discography make up this enjoyable book on the life of the ultimate prima donna of the 19th century. This book could, in fact, be subtitled "Everything you wanted to know about Dina."
However, like many prima donnas, Patti was probably a creature of the stage and song. She came alive the most when she was singing -- she even built a private theatre in her home to entertain guests with her singing. Her personal life, although much discussed, comes across as rather shallow and artificial. She married three times, the first time to a Marquis who flirted with Patti "lookalikes", the second to the tenor Nicolini (which caused a scandal in Victorian England) and the third time to a Baron half her age who both pampered and isolated her. There is no evidence she was ever in love though -- indeed she seemed mainly attracted to fawning eccentrics. Her last years seem to have been lonely. Thus, despite the research and well-written style of this biography, ultimately Patti is still a mystery. Her recordings, made when she was in her 60s, tell more of the story -- the charm, the emotional involvement, the uniquely haunting sound.
I greatly enjoyed this book because I had heard so much about Patti and wanted to 'know' her better. But as with most opera singers, really "hearing, one can believe."

The above quote, from Patti herself, pretty much sums things up. Adelina Patti was, undoubtedly, the most famous singer of the 19th century. In Mr. Cone's exhaustively researched book (in appendix form are lists of her roles, recordings, stage and concert appearances), the life of this extraordinary diva is examined. She started as a child prodigy, and made her official operatic debut at the age of sixteen (!) in "Lucia di Lammermoor." Patti lived in an age when operatic star power reigned supreme, and Cone includes tales of her capriciousness to highlight that fact. However, Patti was a true artist, able to even melt the hardest of hearts, including George Bernard Shaw. This is a marvelous book for anyone interested in singers and/or famous women of the 19th century.

I read this book years ago after it first came out. I was a fan of Patti but I knew very little about her life. She is an absolutely fascinating person and a tremendous singer (even in her sixties and seventies). If you like opera history, then this is the book for you.

Buechner has a way of bringing the tough questions we all ponder to the surface in this great book. Using a poetic, narrative style, he allows the reader to walk through one day of his life and to enter his brain as he questions the meaning of life and the purpose of our existence. It's not an easy read, and I think Buechner intended it to be this way. If is was too easy, we'd be content to whiz through it and move on with things, just as we often do in our lives...he's teaching us to live a little differently.

This is a tough little book--beautiful, but demanding of the reader. Like great poetry, everything about the book, including its structure and multiple levels of meaning, work together to reinforce its theme--which is fundamentally "why are we here?" That's maybe the most basic question each of us faces. This book provides a thoughtful, nuanced response, and holds up a mirror for us to respond ourselves. After a couple of false starts, I got through it and it changed my life. Really.

I thought this book was very insightful. Buechner has a way with words that rival many a poet. He crafts his thoughts into images that stirred my heart and challenged my soul. A good read for anyone searching for meaning in this crazy life.

Battered & Bruised, should be required reading in every college and university in the country that have or DO NOt have Women and Gender Studies.

Just got the book out of the library last night and I'm nearly 1/3 through it. It is wonderful. In reading the bible, I could never understand how such vile and derogatory outpourings against the few women they wrote about could have been so well hidden. Women seem to make up the baulk of religious worshipers and yet not a kind word is directed at them.

Arthur Ide has my deepest appreciation for stating out right what has been so cleverly distorted regarding the reality of women in the OT.

Arthur Frederick Ide work should be available in school reading lists. I did not know what to expect until I realized that with the bible in hand you can check every footnote and discover that what he says is true. The bible is written as a rabid assault on female sexuality and women in general. Especially note worthy are the comments regarding foreign women, racism is rife a long side hypocrisy and gang rapes. Ide writes well and offers up some thought provoking material .

I just bought a brand new granite counter top for my kitchen(Blue Peral) and I am so glad I read Mr. Hueston's book first. I almost made a major mistake in not looking at the slabs before my counter top was made. The slab they were going to cut my top from had a major mark in the center which would have been awful. Thanks for this tip, I ssaved a lot of headaches and some major money. Thank you for such a wonderful book. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about granite or any stone for their kitchen.

L. Frank Baum considered "Queen Zixi of Ix or the Story of the Magic Cloak" to be the best of his non-Oz fantasies for children and there is certainly no reason to disagree with his self-assessment. The fairies assembled one moonlit night in a pretty clearing of the ancient forest of Burzee to weave the magic cloak. When the old king of Noland dies without any relatives to take the throne a peasant boy named Bud becomes the guy when he is the forty-seventh person to enter the city and the magic cloak that allows wishes to come true becomes very important to him in this 1905 story. Bud has to be king, whether he wants to or not, which means his sister is now Princess Fluff. Dispensing justice and trying to deal with his Aunt Rivette, who feels the new king owes everything he now has to her, are minor problems for King Bud when Queen Zixi and the armies of Ix invade Noland. To make things worse, the magic cloak is stolen.

One of the things I like about "Queen Zixi of Ix" is that it sounds like a traditional fairey tale adventures, even more so than the Oz books, in which Baum certainly created his own fantasy universe. More importantly, characters manage to get beyond the limits of their stereotypes with surprising results, which is certainly a laudable thing to do in telling stories to children. Of course, this only cements Baum's reputation in the realm of American children's literature, but then as anybody knows who has gotten beyond "The Wizard of Oz" Baum was deservedly known as Father Goose. Check out Baum's "The Sea Fairies" and "Sky Island" as well if you like this one, which has 90 illustrations on its 231 pages.

This is one of those books that you remember reading in front of a fire, and for little girl you probably envisionsed actually slipping on the coat made by fairies. I read this about 20 years ago and I can still summon up the feelings I got reading it, just by hearing, "Queen Xixi." I noticed this book by chance and decided I needed to re-own it. Please read this to you child, even if he happens to be a boy. All of us love fairies, we just haven't seen one, but this book allows us to.

This was one of my favorite books as a child - I used to listen to the record (read by Ray Bolger) over and over again. L. Frank Baum out does himself in this one. It is every bit as good as all of the Wizard of Oz books he also penned. Truly magnificent! Read this one to your kids (or just to yourself)!

I keep this book on my shelf as a reference to poetry techniques. It is the best book I have found on the art of writing poetry. The examples are great.

I can't go on enough about how great a poetry manual this is. It's not stuffy, and it is fun to read. Especially chapters 7 and 8, which are on sound in the English language. And they should be read out loud. Also pay special attention to chapter 13 which discusses making sense in poetry. The examples and exercises are helpful. This is the best poetry introduction I've seen. The anthology carries Mason's flair, but you could supplement this manual with R.S. Gwynn's Longman anthology.

Can a book about writing poetry be instructive AND poetic?? A few months ago I wouldn't have known quite how to answer since my experience with poetry manuals had been more in the vein of "this is good for my craft therefore I...must...continue...reading." It seems poetry and books about writing poetry often chafe on each other. Western Wind has proven the antidote to that outlook. It's the most accessible and deeply dug volume on poem-making I've found. I enjoyed it like a good novel and my work is clearly better for it.

P.S. The book "In The Palm of Your Hand" fits up against this one nicely.

This is a very good book about the Fitzgerald wreck. However, two things I wish the author had done:

1. Get off his soapbox about the deficiencies in the Coast Guard Rescue services in lake Superior. I think it needed mentioning, but not in the detail he chose. He also ignores the Canadian rescue facilities.

2. Label the photographs instead of making the reader refer to other pages to determine what they are looking at.

Otherwise, the book is excellent and was well worth the money.

If you have any intrest in the Fitz, this is the book for you.
This is one of the most informative books about the Fitz I have ever read.

The only thing I can say is you will not be disapointed.

I just completed reading Frederick Stonehouse's book (1999 paperback addition) and could not put it down! The various theories mentioned in the text give the readers a good chance to draw an intelligent conclusion on their own. The details of Capt. Cooper's (of the SS Arthur Anderson) conversations with Capt. McSorely were an excellent way of putting us in the middle of the tragic situation. The interview with Steve Chandler of "South Shore" magazine was another useful tool in bringing up many points about the investigation of the Coast Guard, as well as zeroing in on small facts of the Fitzgerald that might have contributed to its sinking. Gordon Lightfoot's lyrics and reference were of particular interest to me, as his hit song was the way I found out about the wreck back in 1976. My only complaint; put the captions on the same page as the pictures instead of making the reader thumb back and forth to figure out what picture they are looking at. Otherwise, excellent work!

First let me note that this review applies to the 1994 edition of this book. The more recent edition may have improved; but be careful if you order the book used, as you may get the '94 book without realizing it!

Marks gets plus marks for othodoxy and fidelity to Church teaching. He does quite accurately represent Catholic teaching on marriage and sexuality. The questions at the back of the book are also quite well done, I think; this might be the one part of the book that I found really useful.

However, the book suffers from disorganization: it appears to skip around from one idea to an entirely unrelated idea. The writing style is not particularly polished, either, which isn't necessarily bad. But in this case, I also have questions about Marks' qualifications for writing this book. It's clear that he knows Church teaching, but has he done any exhaustive study on the many practical psychological, emotional, or sexual aspects of marriage which he covers? It appears that his only qualification for writing this book is that he himself has been married-- which doesn't exactly make him an expert! In summary, I didn't find this as helpful as other reviewers appear to have found it.

I think the book should be retitled "A Catholic handbook for pre-engaged and engaged and newly married couples" -- The questions in the back for engaged couples are incredibly helpful for couples to discuss before discerning their vocation of marriage together. Any Catholics in a serious relationship considering marriage should read it and discuss it together. Dr. Marks does a wonderful job of spelling out the necessary qualities for a successful Catholic marriage and the importance of a lifelong committment. Plus, it has the all-important Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, meaning it is in line with Roman Catholic teaching.

This book is a must for any Catholic engaged to be married. I am a life-long Catholic, but my fiance is not. He has developed in interest in Catholicism and this book was great to read and discuss together. The book not only gave us further insight into the teachings of the Catholic church, it also taught us alot about ourselves. EXCELLENT BOOK.
