I love this book!
I have purchased a number of aromatherapy books over the past year or so and taken out about every one my local library holds. This book far exceeds them all for practical, accesible knowledge. They make it fun and start you out with oils that most people can afford. Some of the books I have list recipes, supposedly for beginners, that use 10 drops of rose absolute, jasmine and the more expensive or unusual oils. That's all well and good, but for someone just getting into aromatherapy, they aren't likely to spend... $$$ for a 1/4 oz. bottle of rose EO.

This book is easy to understand, the recipes are easy to make and easy to enjoy and the information provided is good. They start out with oils that are affordable and easily found, but also present special oils each month, like jasmine, frankinsence, and rose, that one can "move up to".

The only thing I wish they had made more clear or stressed more was about applying oils neat. Some of the recipes aren't clear about that and for someone who is just starting, they may not realize that there aren't a lot of oils that you want to use neat due to their strength.

Anyway, great book! I love it.

Perfect for Beginners and Useful Long Afterwards
Paula and Judi have compiled an incredible introduction for someone new to aromatherapy. The book is so easy to follow and read, and the blends are so easy to make and use. In addition, the blends in this book are timeless. You won't outgrow this book. What I liked the best about the blends is you see results immediately. To top it off, it's one of the most beautiful books I've seen. Great on the coffeetable, a great conversation piece, and forever in use. Keep it handy!

Seasons of Aromatherapy
Seasons of Aromatherapy by Paula M. Bousquet and Judith Fitzsimmons is a joy! This book feels like an invitation from an old friend to go exploring. I have been borrowing a copy for much too long...TODAY I AM BUYING MY OWN! Thanks!

A new Father's thoughts.
I could only image what my two month old daughter thinks as she smiles at me,"I know this man; he is my father, who loves me and cherishes me, and he will protect me. I know his voice because before I was even born, he spoke to me and comforted me. I know that I already love him, even though I can only let him know this with my little smile." Phoebe is at peace with her mother and me because we used the Sleep Talk scripts. And, we are convinced that Phoebe sleeps all night because we continue to use Sleep Talk today.

Sleep Talk works
What this book does is provide words (scripts) of encouragement to read to your child while they sleep to help with problems they might be experiencing. For example, my son wouldn't go to sleep easy AND would wake up more that once during the night. Getting him back to sleep took some time. This went on for two years. We tried everything including the Ferber method. Within three days of using one of the scripts in the book it was easy to get him to sleep. If he did wake during the night he would go back to sleep on his own or be easy to sooth and fall asleep. This was using a script right from the book. Even more amazing was when we would fight with him to give nebulizer treatments. As I fought with him through a treatment I made sure he knew what the nebulizer was and it was good medicine. That night I read a script I wrote using the same words I used during his treatment. The next day he was calm and took the "good medicine." This book provides scripts for many situations and gives you the tools to write your own scripts. It is easy to understand and you can be using the method in short time.

A Wonderful Tool for Childrearing
How I wish I'd had this book when raising my children! It's now at the top of my list for new parents. Not only does the author give specific scripts to use with children as they sleep (with impressive results from clients), she offers wonderful little tidbits on dealing with issues that arise in all families. All of this is presented in a loving, thoughtful, intelligent and logical manner. One of my favorites is the "one-finger" technique. Instead of saying, "No, don't touch that!", she suggests, "You may touch that with one finger." When I'm fortunate enough to have grandchildren, much of what is presented in this gem of a book will be put to good use.

Hope and Healing
In her book, Dr. Rabinor weaves a beautiful tapestry of hope using the unique stories of her patients with eating disorders. Her spirituality shines through in this wonderful book, while her openness about her own human shortcomings and doubts creates an endearing image of a very caring therapist.
Whatever your path, I can gaurantee you will benefit from reading this book. It brings a true message of hope and lets us know that healing from eating disorders takes a lot of work, but with committment it is possible.
Bravo!

A book that is both informative and artful
Judy Rabinor has the rare gift of educating through beautifully crafted stories. Each chapter could stand alone as a beautifully written short story, and the cumulative effect grows, so that by the book's conclusion, the reader has an ever-deepening understanding of this most difficult issue. I have recomended this book to patients who suffer from eating disorders, their parents, mates and friends. They thank me for the recommendation, and tell me that not only is each chapter filled with the realities that they have faced, but also that their understanding of this profound problem is further deepened. Dr. Rabinor's honesty about not only her patients, but also her own experience of the therapeutic process, including the pain some of the cases have induced in her, was especialy welcome. This is a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone who has been touched by this problem, and any therapist who treats it.

A candid presentation of the art of psychotherapy
A Starving Madness: Tales Of Hunger, Hope, & Healing In Psychotherapy is a collection of stories based on the clients of Judith Rabinor, a New York psychologist who specializes on eating and body disorders. With its candid presentation of the art of psychotherapy, and a compelling testimony of hope for finding the right balance in body and mind, A Starving Madness is highly recommended reading, especially for anyone seeking or needing professional help to deal with body image distortion and eating disorder conditions.

This book saved me!!
I must admit that Lucinda Bassett's program (15 week taped program) and Dr. Bourne's "Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" are remarkable...but I feel that this book "Embracing the Fear" was the last "pill" I really needed to help in my recovery from agoraphobia. Once housebound, I have read many books on the topic. This book is wonderful... I have underlined and highlighted almost the entire book. THIS is the first book that talked to me about MY fear--not fear of dying like so many other books describe but fear of the TERROR of a panic attack. I KNEW I was not dying...I was just avoiding my life trying to protect myself from having one of those dreaded attacks away from home. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I am currently finishing up my master's degree in counseling and will definitely use this with my anxious clients. I can't tell you how much this book has helped me. It is like my second Bible.

This one is the best because I've read them all
I have consumed every book out there on this subject. This is the best book for helping the patient cope and understand the condition. It has more helpful coping strategies than any other book on the market. It is upbeat and give you the sense that you can handle this, and you are going to be fine. I love their attitude.

Great Advice and not Another Lousy Workbook
I have read and or purchased over 10 Anxiety books and this one was definiately a book worth reading. I hate the fill in the blank what did I do today to make me better garbage? I want general advice or a cognitive plan that works. I've suffered with my illness for more than 6 months, been on many different meds. (Still taking them) and tried many things. To me this book is better than any therapy I've had so far. This book will not cure you, but it will teach you how to "Cope" with attacks instead of fighting them. It also teaches you that self-talk is not always a good thing.

A Greenwich Village Classic
I couldn't stop reading this book! It's funny, smart, full of surprises and as beautiful as any book I've seen this year. It's like a box of candy -- almost impossible to put down, easy to pick up again, and delicious wherever your fingers happen to land.

Excellent book about my favorite part of New York
This book is a beautiful and well written guide to my favorite area of New York. An excellent read for anyone who enjoys the village.

Beautifully done.
Having planned a trip to NYC for the first time, I wanted to use a different guidebook that would give me a historical perspective with walking tours. I found it in this beautiful book. It made my trip to NYC a most memorable one. I highly recommend this book to anyone travelling to NY who wishes to learn more about this great city's history.

Editing as it really is
I recommend this book to my Masters students as the best guide to the real world of editing. It is not just about 'technical editing', but a first rate primer for editing generally. A perfect example of the author's 'can do'approach is The Half Hour edit on page 172. What can you do if you only have a script for 30 minutes before the courier arrives ? Most editors would throuw up their hands and say 'nothing'. Tarutz tells you ten useful (perhaps vital) steps you can accomplish in this time.

We have used a number of texts, but this one is without doubt the best

Necessary for any writer's toolkit!
This book is an EXCELLENT resource for any technical writer! It is thorough, strategic, and full of practical tips. Of course, it is very well written.

How to justify a Technical Editor on your staff
This book is particularly useful in defining the role of your Technical Editor, but what I found useful was the way the author addressed the need for a technical editor. In many technical writing and documentation groups, a technical editor is not in place because they use peer edits instead. Peer edits are not as effective as a technical editor! This book addresses quantitative results of having or not having a technical editor and how to "sell" your management on adding a technical editor to your team.

I would recommend this book to writers, so that they may better understand the role of their editor. I would recommend this book to editors, so that they may better understand how to work with writers effectively. And I would recommend this book to any documentation manager or communications manager who is considering hiring a technical editor or trying to gain management approval for hiring a technical editor.

Sometimes the best things are the simplest
Going through life as parent of a "special" child, one navigates a maze of physicians, experts, specialists, and amateur diagnosticians. Desperate for help, such parents try a range of treatments and tactics, sometimes destroying their families and their sanity in the process. Ms. Bluestone and HANDLE do not have a "magic bullet," but the simple and authentic wisdom in the HANDLE approach teaches us all that there really ARE honest and practical strategies to help individuals who don't fit any of the models in the medical literature. My son has benefitted greatly from the HANDLE precepts, and this book tells true stories of others whose lives have been forever changed. Ms. Bluestone's own story is an inspiration, and she brings to her work the unique empathy of one who has "been there" and found her way out. HANDLE respects individuality and eschews labels; the accounts of these HANDLE clients are compelling and dramatic. Perhaps the most important thing this book provides is hope, which is often in painfully short supply for "marginalized" people. I congratulate all these writers for recounting their journeys, and I think thousands of people can benefit from stepping into the Churkendoose shoes for a few hours. I recommend this book to those with open minds, tired spirits, and vital hearts.

A positive message of hope
Compiled and edited by Lisa Brenner, The Churkendoose Anthology: True Stories of Triumph over Neurological Dysfunction is a collection of uplifting testimonies offering a positive message of hope to individuals afflicted with neurodevelopment problems ranging from attention disorders, learning disabilities, Tourette's Syndrom, or an acquired brain injury, to Cerebral Palsy, sleep disorders, Vestibular Dysfunction, Down's Syndrome, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. True success stories of the HANDLE (Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency) approach in helping young people and their parents. Enhanced with an informative commentary by Judith Bluestone, The Churkendoose Anthology is highly recommended as an engaging and encouraging read, especially for anyone having to cope with a neurological dysfunction.

So Much Hope in This Book
The stories in this book give hope to us all. For more than a decade I have worked with adults and children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The usual treatments involve behavior modification and drug therapy. Little time is spent in observation and evaluation such as described by Judith Bluestone in this book. The Handle Institute's methods offer hope through its methods that have no reliance on drug therapy. This is a book for patients, family members and professionals.

Super Read
This is a very charming, heart-warming story, well written with care for the characters and the reader. Michael O'Ryan is so loveable, so supportive and caring that you want him to be a real living, breathing human. The kind of guy your mother would love to invite over for supper. It's fun to watch the romance unfold between the two main characters, and how each has his/her own personal fears to deal with, and how love helps to overcome. This is the kind of story that will make you feel good inside, all romantic, and keep you interested in the story line. Ms. French is an excellent, gifted author. She understands human nature.

Another great book by J. French
I loved Judith French's historical romances and I've been reading them for years. After a long day at work and getting the kids to soccer practice and doing homework, there's nothing better than climbing into bed and reading a good book. Well, once again Ms. French didn't disappoint me. I loved IRISH ROGUE. As always, the heroine was a strong woman who needed to be loved and the hero was so loveable! Can't wait for her next book

The Irish Rogue
The expertise writing of Judith E. French is achieved once again. The Irish Rogue kept me so captivated I read it in three hours! Anyone who wishes to read this book will be searching for previous Judith E. French books. Read it! You won't be let down.

Out of America
I saw "Out of Africa" in Copenhagen in 1986 when I was 21 and bought the biography in Danish, but I couldn't get into it at the time, and eventually sold it to a used book store. Then two years ago I came across it (in English) in a used book store here in Southern California, read it and adored it. It's one of the few books I have read more than once.

I love the movie as well, bought it on video about a year ago and have watched it many times. Yes, Redford is not a Dennis F.Hatton type but he's perfect. (In '86 I thought he was utterly miscast, despite being already then a huge Redford fan!)

Thurman took seven years to write this bio, and even learned Danish in the process. She truly cares about her subject and thankfully takes her time. Dinesen comes fully alive in this book, a rare accomplishment for biographers.

If you go to Copenhagen, take the train north along the coast (20 min. from the Central Station), get off at the beautiful, small, old Rungsted Station and walk down to Rungstedlund (about a mile). It was there that Karen Dinesen, later Blixen, was born and raised. She returned in 1931 from her farm in Africa, and began writing her first collection of tales, Seven Gothic Tales, published in 1934 in English and in Danish (in her own translation) a year later. She "only" wrote seven books for the next thirty years, but oh, what books. It is indeed quality, not quantity that counts with art.

In 1991 Blixen's house was opened as lovely museum with a small tasteful book store with books by and about Blixen (she is always referred to as Karen Blixen in Denmark), and a very nice and quiet small cafe. Upstairs is a wonderful exibit about her life, including seperate rooms with many books from her private collection.

The rest of the museum consists of her beautiful living rooms and study which all look as if she were still living there.

Behind the house is a parklike garden which is open 24 hours a day all year round. Here are the flower beds from where she gathered the cut flowers for her beautiful arrangements, the meadows with cows and sheep, wood benches placed along the paths, and the enormous tree under which she was buried in 1962. It is a magical garden, which she herself made sure would be preserved so that the public may enjoy as she once did.

Thurman's biography and the film "Out of Africa" generated so much interest in Blixen that it became possible to fund the museum, thus enabling us to travel back in time and walk with Karen Blixen in her garden and her house 40 years later. After you read the biography, you'll want to book your ticket to Copenhagen!

A bit of bragging: My parents live a mile from Rungstedlund, and I return to Blixens home every time I visit Denmark on my vacations. Rungsted anno 2002 is one of the most sought after addresses in the Copenhagen area, and it is easy to see why: Right on the coast, with meadows and woods still unharmed by suburban development, the scenery makes me sigh with longing just writing of it!

Note: The museum has a web site.

Plenty IS rotten in the State of Denmark, but Rungstedlund is pure bliss, and represents everything that is good and beautiful about Denmark.

Her life story has the power to console
This is maybe the only author I know of where I enjoyed her biography more than the books she wrote. Isak Dinesen, she of the many pen names matured slowly while alternating her life between a pampered bourgeois life in Denmark and a wildly iconoclastic life in British East Africa that was partly feudal and partly anarchic. Two influences punctured her life for better or worse: her bout with syphilis that made her an outsider and helped shape her interest in huminity at large rather than her own household and the debt she owed to her dead love which she bungled when he was alive because she was in awe of him but who became her driving force and her hidden mythmaker once she had to cope without him. She was also lucky enough to live in a time when not every corner of the earth echoed with the ideas of everywhere else and that allowered for her originality where not all eccentric arrows had to be pointed into practical directions.
The chapters on her afterlife back in Europe show a brave and difficult woman who loved in retrospect and was celebrant, witness and victim of nostalgia for a gone world but she was also savvy enough to know that when life breaks your heart you can become a monster or a relic or all human potentialities wrapped in a finely tuned tenderness that makes sharing your experience an act of love and a gift to generations to come who struggle with their own version of alienation and heartbreak. Dinesen's Africa is no more but her roller coaster ride as a woman of talent and sometimes complex and dark passions is timeless.

Out of judith thurman
When i first saw out of africa in 1885 i was only 7 and like all 7 year olds i thought it was a long boring movie. Although i liked the music, my mom always played the soundtrack on trips in the car. When a few years ago i watched it once again i was enthrauled by it and wanted to know more about karen's life. it took me years to find out of africa in a book store and i read and loved it! but when it came to look for Isak dinesen... i could not find it anywhere so years went by and i was in wisconsin and i looked in a used bookstore and there it was on the floor on top of a pile well i got it and it was very detailed and very satisfying, read this book it is awsome i am amazed how Judith was so dedicated to this book ( she taught herself danish) and spent 8 years finisheing this book. it is one of the best Bio's ever.
