Unique guide for the archaeology minded traveler to Rome
The little known Oxford Archaeological Guides series provides information that you cannot find elsewhere. This guide was written by Amanda Claridge in 1998 and gives information about many of the archaeological sites of Rome. Sites are described in great detail with an emphasis on how the site might have looked in ancient times and changes occurring over centuries. Famous artifacts that were once part of these sites are described and their present locations are mentioned. You learn where in the baths of Caracalla the famous Farnese Hercules and Farnese Bull were located and you learn how they came to be in the archaeological museum at Naples. There are little known sites like the tomb of the Scipios as well as places as familiar as the Piazza Navona and the Colloseum. Obscure but fascinating information is given: the great brick reinforcing wedge on the southeast side of the Colloseum was built in 1807: I have not seen this information anywhere else. The oval Piazza Navona is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian of 86 AD; the stores that line its periphery are built on top of the ancient seating. This book would not be suitable as the only guidebook to take with you on a trip, the information provided is far too specialized. I'd recommend taking along the Michelin Green guide or the Knopf guide for Rome as well. Some minor drawbacks: the drawings and maps are not as detailed as they could be and the few photographs that are provided are black and white and of poor quality. These complaints are not critical flaws; the book would still be invaluable even if it didn't contain a single illustration.

This is a fine book.
This book delivers what the cover promises. It's a thorough guide to what the city of Rome still has of the physical remains of the original inhabitants, of the Etruscans, of the Roman Republic, and of the Roman Empire. If you're going to Rome and you care about those things, take the time to read this book before you go. If you read it after you come back, you'll just have to plan another visit. If you're not going to Rome, but care about Roman history, then Ms. Claridge will give you some concrete (and marble) facts to add to the titillating stories of the emperor's peccadilloes that you've heard from Hollywood and that fuddy-duddy Classics professor.

If your focus is ancient Rome, this is indispensable
I saw this book randomly in a bookstore before I had ever been to Rome, and decided to buy it. The diagrams and maps inside were interesting even to scan, and the description of the sites and their history gave me a better sense of what I wanted to see on my trip. When in Rome, I carried this book everywhere. In addition to the standard highlights -- detailed descriptions of each item on the Forum, the Upper Via Sacra, the Palatine, etc. -- this book had coverage of the archeological sites that seem to be on random street corners throughout Rome. If I came across something that looked interesting, I could look it up on the maps, then find the text. Often, there would be a helpful diagram of the original site layout that allowed me to make sense of what stones were standing (and often there aren't many). The book also lists gems of archeological sites that I never would have planned to see had I not read parts of it before my trip. That said, this book has more detail than the casual tourist needs or wants. Much more. But if you want to spend several days delving around ancient Rome, then this book deserves your attention.

Recommended for all who want a loving lasting relationship.
This outstanding book trancends religeous beliefs, cultural backgrounds and any modern day (Western & Eastern) sadly misguided beliefs for what constitutes a happy marriage and true love. The author is able to accomplish this great feat by reaching deep down and grasping at wisdom in all its pureness, raising it to the surface and clearly defining without any doubt what TRUE LOVE really is.

While the core focus of the book is to teach the reader exactly what true love is and exactly what it is not; it goes beyond and takes the reader through various psycological analysis of the many types of people, their sentimental, sexual and psycological behaviour and the reasons they engage in the types of relationships they do. All of this being achieved with bullseye accuracy, logic reasoning and awakening clarity.

Are you in love now? Think you don't need this book? THINK AGAIN!
Chances are you may need this book even more than those that seek to find love! You heard me right. It is unfortunate so many people today mistake feelings of extacy, moments of passion and romance, friendship and times of admiration for their partners for TRUE LOVE.

You will also find the book being composed of about 10% spirituality (without pushing any one specific religion/path) and 90% psycology. The spirituality side is partially derived from 5000 year old path called Hermetics -A very balanced Occidental path (with many parallels to Yogic,Buhddism, and whose modern version is influenced with Kabbalah). There are some quotes from the Christian bible as well in this book - but let me repeat, this book is for absolutely everyone, regardless of their spiritual path/religeous beliefs or lack of either.

If you would ever consider seeking counciling in an attempt to better understand or mend a relationship then you would be wise to pick up this book. In other words, don't wait until that day comes, educate yourself today so you won't have to save the relationship of tomorrow. If you've had many failed relationships it's time to ask yourself why and get to the bottom of it before failure comes strolling down your alley again. For those dilusioned by ignorance and lack of relationship experience who think they know how to have a healthy relationship, then time to get this book and get a serious reality check.

I find this book of such high value that I would recommend it even to the counselor(s) of relationships. Yes, even you WILL learn something here!

If you think you know what true love is, read this book!
This book is a mirror of the ways people love, or think they love. What most people believe to be true love is probably corrupt. John Baines teaches us how to dicipher our reasons for being in a relationship and how to create truly, honest love.

This has become my bible of the heart
I had become a sinic of love until I read this book. I always felt that how people love was not real and was always searching for the true meaning of love.

This book brought me to that understanding that I was looking at all the things that love was not, which I mistook for love, and gave me the vision to see what love really is. I am now on my journey to find true love for myself.

This one is romantic, exciting and funny.
Once I started reading Balmorrow's Bride, I could not put the book down. It carries you along the story line so well that I could not wait to turn the page to see what would happen to the hero next. I really enjoyed the love story as it developes between the two main characters. The tenderness and humor was outstanding. I found myself laughing out loud when the author had the characters laughing. Yes, I received a few strange looks at the pool. The supporting characters were great, too. This book should be a series so you could find out more about them. I highly recommend this book.

This is what a Regency Romance should be!
This is *by far* the best Regency I have read in a very long time. The characters are well drawn, there is laughter and love, intrigue and adventure. My only wish is for more Regencies like this one!

Excellent book. Great writer.
Highly recommend this book and all others past and present written by Judith A. Lansdowne. She is very imaginative. Not only does she write romance but also adds intrigue, mystery and comedy. Her characters seem to come alive. Please do read her books and you will see what I mean.

Fills a long standing need...
The Jerusalem Post Internet Store chose this book as Product of the Week, June 1, 1998. It says: '"The Ultimate Family Sourcebook" fills a long standing need for families all over the world who want to celebrate their child's special day. Suitable for all denominations of Judaism and those without formal affiliation, this book includes English speaking reliable contacts, web sites, e-mail addresses and fax numbers. In short, everything you need to plan a trouble-free event."

Thorough, well-thought out, user-friendly.
"To those who know how difficult it can be to plan a bar/bat mitzvah at the corner synagogue, it may sound completely absurd to try planning one half a world away. But for parents who believe that their child's coming of age would be enhanced by holding the festivities in the Promised Land, there's a new book written by two mothers who have done just that." "Aside from an exhaustive list of synagogues, schools, and kibbutzim all over the country that cater to English-speaking guests of various financial means and religious affiliations, the book covers every base imaginable." "Even if you weren't thinking of holding your child's celebration (or your own; there's information for adult bnai mitzvah, too) in Israel, take a look through this book. It may just inspire you to change your plans." Abigail Klein Leichman, The Jewish Standard/Jewish Community News, April 10, 1998

I hope this is the beginning of a series!
What a great book! I actually am a lover of Paris and photography, and of course who can resist a dog, let alone two? I really hope the authors make this into a series, maybe London, Florence, Venice? The book reads like a childrens book, but the target audience does seem to be aimed at adults. Whomever reads this book, it's enjoyable and one of my favorites!

How to see paris - ground level
This book was a gift from a friend who knows our love for dogs and Paris. My wife had just returned from the city of lights to our four "children" when the book arrived. What a delightful remembrance of the city seen trhough the keen photographic eye of Michael Maylszko. The text is complementary to a fault. A truely seamless product.

This should be enjoyed by anyone who understands the mind of a dog or who has been to Paris. It will be especially pleasing to those who appreicate both

Lovely doggy fun, beautifully photographed & smashing text!
The dogs on their own are adorable, the words on their own are wonderful, the sights of Paris are beautiful - but put them all together in this lovely book and you get the dreamy package that is "Betty & Rita Go to Paris". Excellent work! I look forward to Betty & Rita's next adventure.

My Shining Star
I've been hooked on Judith Smith-Levin since the release of her first novel "Do Not Go Gently" back in '96. I love Police Lieutenant Starletta Duvall and her friends, especially her lover, Mitch. Star is the portrait of a lady and she can kick butt when necessary.

In Reckless Eyeballin -- who murdered Cynthia Chapin-Rayner? Finding out whodunit is worth the read and you will relish every moment. If you love reading detective mysteries, checkout Ms. Smith-Levin as she knows how to grab your attention and hold it until the very last page. All I can say is - - I loved this novel and I can't wait until her next release.

All That and a Bag of Chips!
I waited, and watched, and monitored the release date, hasseled the book store, and FINALLY got my copy. Of course, it is great! I didn not catch onto who the murder was until late, and I admit I was leaning a little toward the wife. As for the ending, Judith, I can't beleive you left me hanging like that! It was a perfect setup for the next installment. Please, Please tell me it will not be as long between books! This is torture. There was not even a hint on the cover or in the bio about the next book. Please, tell me there is one! You are doing an excellent job, please write faster! Devoted fan.

Murder in the ranks of the Rich and Famous
With this one Judith proves again why those of us who have discovered her remain loyal and eagerly await for her next release. As usual she does not disappoint.

Murder is always sinister but throw power, prestige, money and passion into the ring and things really get ugly. In this one we not only get a riveting murder mystery but she takes a very real look at human nature when everything is at risk.

At the beginning of the story there are two very different and brutal murders, Star and Paresi have their hands full trying to solve them. To complicate matters one of the victims is a longtime friend of Mitchell Grant's, and he's grieving and trying to help find her killer. Add to the mix that Mitch's ex-wife has decided she doesn't approve of his new love interest.

Once you pick this one up you will not be able to put it down, so clear your calendar and wait until the kids are in bed.

Powerful
This entire series is powerful. The first historical fiction series I have read and I am HOOKED!

my review
In this sequel, we see our hero, Claes or Nicholas, thrown into the complex situation in the middle east. Will the Sultan take over Trebizond where he has been sent as consul for Florence? If anyone can find succes in such a venture, Nicholas is the person, and he does. He succeeds not only in his trading, he saves his people from the Turks and also his step-daughter, Catherine.

Once again, the author has written a masterpiece. We are thrown from Florence to the middle east with all its complexities, but all the time we are rooting for our hero and he makes us proud!

And to think I still have more books to enjoy! I can't wait...

Take a Magic Carpet to Trebizond!
Reading this book is like taking a magic carpet to a mystical place. Ms. Dunnett has the knack of taking her readers to whatever era and place in the world she chooses. In this book our Niccolo has matured somewhat but he still has some hard lessons to learn about how lonely it is to be a leader. He also has to learn that a true leader leads without his employees or friends knowing that that is what he's doing. In fact, these books of Niccolo could be used for demonstrating leadership. I'm surprised that no corporate videos have been made from them. This is a good book even though Niccolo fails to fascinate as much as Lymond does, but I don't think there ever can be another Lymond. I don't find the characters as likeable in this series for one, and Catherine is certainly no Philippa (at least not yet), but there is high adventure, intrigue and enough court gossip to keep anyone interested in the politics of the 15 century.

Great Activity Book for Summer
A ton of great ideas. Some very simplistic but I purchased the book when my son was 3. A 2 year old would find the simple activities enjoyable. We like stone painting and butter balls. Worth the investment for sure!

Your children will love the activities in this book
There are 13 different types of activities. They are Art, Construction, Craft, Dance, Education, Environment, Foods and Cooking, Games, Horticulture, Make-Believe, Music and Nature. It gives you tips for your child's safety and enjoyment. The book also lists a variety of materials and supplies you might need for that activity.

GREAT book!
This is a wonderful book! I have 5 days to plan a week's worth of activities for 10 children between the ages of 1 and 5. A friend loaned me this book. The ideas are extremely varied, some indoor, some outdoor, some can be adapted for either.

The ideas seem to be in random order through the book, and the index at the back lists what category they fall under, i.e., art, craft, construction, dance, environment, family, games, etc. All ideas can be done with household items that you already have, paper plates, glue, crayons, and many ideas do not require any supplies. All of the ideas are presented in a learning-through-play manner, not academically as in other books like this. After looking through this book, I found literally dozens of ideas, and my stress level has gone down considerably!

The one thing I would change about the book--I did not find any warnings regarding the 2? or so ideas that involved balloons, and there were minimal warnings on ideas that included small objects that young children might swallow. People will have to rely on their own common sense (easier for some than others).

Overall, a superb book, and I'm thrilled to have discovered it just when I needed it the most!

Baby's Bris
Baby's Bris is original in it's choice of topic, yet universal in it's appeal. People of all faiths can relate to the themes of faith, family and heritage portrayed so warmly in this book. Baby's Bris makes a great baby gift!

Baby's Bris
Outstanding children's book from which even an older brother (of the author) could learn. Was hoping for a pop-up book. Would highly recommend for readers of all ages. Best book all year. Waiting for sequel.

P.S. Mom didn't make me say this.

A Warm and Authentic Portrayal
Susan Wilkowski in Baby's Bris has written a warm story withsensitivity, intelligence and humor. Her characters are so real theyare palpable. She has a wonderful ear for dialogue and has captured the authentic tone of a Jewish family so well that I hear their voices in my head. She has an ambitious goal; to portray the Jewish family at the time of a Bris and its special joy and the cultural tradition that Jews all over the world observe and the continuity of their people and their faith. There are no other books to my knowledge, on the market today that handle this issue and I urge all to run to their computer and order one immediately. The artwork also embraces the delicacy and joy of this sensitive subject. I also write and teach writing and when one writer praises another writer, it is indeed great praise. Muriel H. Realistic Romance
Not generally a fan of serial romance books such as Silhouette and Harlequin; I read it on the recommendation of a friend. I was pleasantly surprised by the storyline and enjoyed it tremendously. Ms. Arnold told of a romance that had no prejudices or prejudgements and gave readers hope that not every romantic hero is looking for a visually perfect woman but the one woman that he sees with his heart as perfect.

This is what Love is all about
I recently had the great good fortune to read a friend's old copy of Barefoot in the Grass. What a wonderful story! Judith Arnold has a very easy-to-read style, descriptions that come alive, and the knack for bringing heart-touching issues to her pages. Her ability to explore and reveal the emotional depths of her characters, to show us how they grow as people, makes her story seem true to life. As an aspiring writer myself, I am studying Barefoot in the Grass line by line; it may be the perfect romance novel.

Excellent, the best book i've read
Excellent, the best book i've read. Arnold shows how love goes beyond looks, and focuses on how the innerself of a person is the most important trait of all. The heroin survives with great perseverance, and frustation just fills you, trying to tell each of the characters what the other feels. You'll forget it's only fiction, feeling happy at the end, along with the main characters.
