Stories of courage and spiritual insight
Katherine Martin's Women Of Spirit gathers stories of courage and spiritual insight from the women who lived unusual lives. Stories of spiritual guidance and how these women made a different in their worlds prove inspiration and absorbing, with the book providing sections based on the type of spirit exhibited by each.

Human courage in ordinary lives
This book is full of stories from average women who decided to take a stand for themselves or for someone else and suddenly found themselves making a difference in the world. Julie Su was one year out of law school when the slave like conditions of an El Monte sweat shop were uncovered. No one wanted to take the case of illegal Thai immigrants against big business so she did.
Kathy Buckley was born deaf, misdiagnosed and placed in an institution of the mentally retarded. She didn't start learning to speak until she was 8 yrs old - She now is a motivational speaker for others who are often "unseen and unrecognized." Most of the women in this book live average lives like me and I found their acts of courage very inspirational because I could relate to them. It makes you want to cheer for women who color outside of the lines, "good girls" who don't always behave as they are told. These women face fear and keep going. The chapters are short, inspiring to read, and there are contact numbers for each women in the back of the book. Very cool. It's a inexpensive gift that packs a wallop.

Reaffirming the American Woman's Spirit
In a time of terrorism, violence and uncertainty, Women of Spirit showcases courageousness, spunk and fortitude - true American attributes. The stories are both uplifting and fascinating. A great gift for the person in your life who is seeking inspiration.

Writing A Research Paper

Well-deserved standard for expository writing!
This book, commonly known as WARP, is one of dozens designed to help students through the wilderness of paper writing. Unlike the others, however, it has become something of a standard in high schools, colleges, and even elementary schools, thanks to its clear, concise, up-to-date writing, and the excellent examples it provides. The book is short enough (and cheap enough) to be used as required reading for entire classes, and is remarkably useful for a surprisingly wide range of reader/writers. It was distributed as a textbook (and set of marching orders!) to my son's sixth grade class, but its no-nonsense approach would work just as well for college students. Very impressive accomplishment, and highly recommended.

A Book for Writers in the Millenium
Having problems with internet citations in your papers? Ceely et.al. have solved the problem in the clearest and most logical way. I highly recommend this book for teachers of writing across the curriculum. Writing a Research Paper is even better in its fifth edition than it was in its fourth since it contains more student work, and it wonderfully prepares students to use technology in their research.

A gem for incorporating internet bibliographies
I've used this text with my international college students with great success, and I gave my high school daughter her own copy, which all her friends beg to borrow. The model essays are superb, and the up-to-the-date section on internet searching and citation should be used by all teachers and students in the year 2000!

The Funniest, the Wackiest, the Very Best
Genevieve Stamper's humor blew me beyond away. Dude, these jokes have been critical at the office! Being a seasoned punster, I know how to 'RAM it up' around business machines. Makes a great gift!!! You can't go 'ROM' with these gems!

Genevieve Stamper Rocks This Boat!
Genevieve Stamper is by far the funniest and most entertaining person I have had the pleasure to read. AT first, I bought this book for my little brother, but I started reading it and I couldn't stop! I COULD NOT STOP! I was reading until late late at night, like until 3:00 am in the morning. It was so easy to deliver these jokes to my little brother that I had him up all night too. Sometimes, now when I'm sitting at my desk at work, I think of these jokes and just start cracking up. When I'm sad, all I have to do is pull it off my shelf. Thank you Genevieve Stamper for your wonderful book, it has certainly lightened my life considerably and I recommend it with my whole heart to all those out there who love to laugh, need to laugh, or are just fascinted by today's technology. Wit, intellegence, and goofiness all in one!

Kids will LOVE this book!
Miss Stamper taps right into the heart (and funnybone) of her audience in this hilarious collection. Kids will latch right on to these jokes, and will tell them over and over again. This book will become an instant favorite of any young person growing up in this computerized age.

Everyone needs a vacation
Everyone needs time off, not everyone gets to actually "go on vacation" though. This book offers ideas on how to get away without actually getting away. Sometimes just the thought of being on vacation can take some of the stress out of our day, it workes for me. I found this book in the suggested reading section of Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life which also talks about vacations.

Judith Sachs shows us simple, easy to implement ideas that take all the work out of trying to relax. Even if you love the rat race as much as I do, there are days when just twenty minutes of peace and quiet would lend the fuel needed to make it to the finish line.

A quick flip through the pages will leave you feeling like the escape has already begun. Actually implementing some of these ideas will get you through the weeks and months in between your "real" getaways.

I enjoyed this book so much I included it in the suggested reading list in my book, Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life

Great for anyone who plays with kids!
I nanny for a couple different families that have kids of different ages, and this book has been incredibly helpful to me. I do not go to work without this book. The kids know by now that it's full of fun activities and that they'll never be bored when I'm watching them. I've found that many of the activities can be modified for younger children when you are playing with some younger and older kids. This book is a great resource.

Turn off the TV and have some fun!
As a mother of two young boys, age 6 and 8, I can tell you that kids would much rather plop down and watch cartoons rather than make their own fun. Ms. Ellison's book has changed all that in my family. Now the kids flip through the book with me to find an activity they'd like to do, and don't even complain that they're missing their favorite TV shows! My oldest son has even started a club for the kids in our neighborhood based on an activity in the book. Thank you, Ms. Ellison, for helping my family turn off the TV and turn on their brains!

great!
I babysit for 2 little kids, and this is like a Godsend! All the activities in this book are do-able, and actually really fun. Every single one is fun and you can do all of them with your kids! It's terrific! Plus it gets them AWAY from the TV.

Essential reading
As someone who has lost a loved one to this terrible disease, I really wish I had had a copy of this extraordinary book. Some of the anguish and the many of the unknowns would have been spared me and my family. In clear, no-nonsense language, Judith Harch and Jim Knittweis offer invaluable insights and necessary, practical advice that any Alzheimer's patient caregiver should have. In fact, this Guide should be mandatory reading prescribed by the medical community to Alzheimer's caretakers or support groups.

A Wealth of Practical Information
Alzheimer Solutions, a Personal Guide for Caregivers by Tim Knittweis & Judy Harch speaks simply and directly about the issues Alzheimer caregivers face. It addresses the physical, mental and emotional symptoms of the person with Alzheimer's as well as the problems created by the stress of coping with the disease on caregivers. The book is organized in a question and answer format which makes it easy to pinpoint the specific information that is needed as the disease progresses. It also includes references that caregivers can turn to for support. I wish I had this resource when my sister and I were caring for my mother.

Practical Guide For Caregivers
Knittweis and Harch have produced a very practical, readible, well-organized "how to" guide for alzheimer caregivers. Topics such as dealing with daily activities, safety issues, common medical problems, and caregiver stress are addressed in a straight foward question-and-answer format. Also included is helpful information about alzheimer disease centers, support groups, useful patient products, legal support, and guidance on choosing a nursing home. I believe this book will be a valuable guide for anyone dealing with this difficult problem.

The Angel Within

"The Angel Within," Conversations with Dahlia
To read ÒThe Angel WithinÓ is to take a walk in warm spring sunshine. Dahlia, the narrator, speaks through Phyllis and Judy, and showers us with tender Love and gentle Wisdom. If ever a person has delighted in a motherÕs loving touch and good advice, that experience is continued and magnified through the truths of DahliaÕs insightful guidance. Dahlia encourages us to enhance our self awareness and gives directions as to how we may find comfort in our CreatorÕs gift of eternal consciousness.

It is more likely for a reader to feel rewarded if just one truth is gathered from a book. But ÒThe Angel WithinÓ fairly glows and radiates with truth and wisdom on every page. As Dahlia tells us of PhyllisÕs journey, Ò... To receive Love we give Love --- this is reciprocity. Life then becomes the meditation, moment to moment. This is awareness.Ó There can be nothing more valuable.

I boldly declare that the instruction and the intent of ÒThe Angel WithinÓ reaches a level with that of Socrates who admonished us that, ÒThe unexamined life is not worth living.Ó Dahlia teaches us to take the next step: to develop our own Eternal consciousness so that we may more fully partake of our CreatorÕs tender Love.

--in a word, 'EXQUISITE'
--finally a children's book that dares to be intelligent, even to teach. We learn that a monkey "...with cries of fear warns their group afar to hear Where they are and what they are doing And if any danger is brewing."

We learn about elephants whose

"trunk is tool to help with food Spray the water 'til they are cooled."

All of this is in verse -verse so easy to remember, such fun to repeat.

-- and the pictures -- vivid, alive, lovely, even a bit abstract.

"Animals at the Zoo, on the Loose Too, by Dr. Judith Lowe, 'EXQUISITE' IN A WORD.

Dr. Seuss has a competitor in Dr.Lowe
Kids of all ages will enjoy this vicarious trip to the zoo. And the kids will fall in love with each of the charming animals that Dr. Lowe has depicted in art and verse. The Lion in the Zoo is now a friendly competitor of the Cat in the Hat! David Covell, Altadena, CA.

Animals at the Zoo
I loved this book. It is beautifully written and handsomely illustrated. It is hard to imagine that Dr. Lowe has not been writing/illustrating childrens books for many years. This book will enrich many children's lives and make more meaningfull visits to the zoo. I have one for a grandchild and plan to give one to esach of the others. Hopefully there will be future books by this author.

Animals Should Definitely Not Act Like People

Laughed out loud...
My husband brought this book home from the library. I picked it up to read it to my 2-year-old, and could not stop laughing at the picture of the hen. If you have seen the book, you know what I mean. My son didn't think it was funny because he's too young, but I just know that someday he will love this book!

A Definite Must
My 3rd grade class can't get enough of this book. Easy text to read and the illustrations make the book. It covers several different animals wearing clothing that would never suit them. For example...sheep wearing a wool sweater, a giraffe wearing neck ties, a chicken wearing pants (Where does the egg go?), just to name a few. Maybe animals shouldn't wear clothing, but your child will definitely LOVE this book. You'll probably enjoy it too!

Well what should they do....
As a pre-school teacher I am always searching for bright, motivating books to start my little ones down the path of learning. Animals should definetely not...fits the bill perfectly. With colorful, humorous, illustrations and predictable text, it is a popular choice in the library center. The picture of the chicken still gets laughs 20 readings later...you will have to look to understand. I highly recommnend this book for any household with children under 5. Written with kids in mind it is original, funny and never boring.

Women in the Viking Age
I just recently purchased this book and read it in 2 days. It seems to keep to facts, not opinions (unless stated). It was fairly easy to read (only a few "dry" places) and it gave it's sources for everything so more reading on the subject is possible. I found it fascinating.

A Much Needed Resource for Women's History
I first got this book as a source for a paper in my Viking history class. I had had trouble finding decent resources and this book was a life-saver! There is so little information on Viking women, largely because of the stereotypes that many people have about the Vikings. In reality, Viking women enjoyed many rights and privileges that women in other parts of the world did not have. My only regret is that there is not more info about this subject. Thank you, Judith Jesch, for writing a much needed resource for info on Viking women.

highly informative, great illustrations
This is a very readable yet scholarly book. Jesch uses a large number of diverse sources to help us gain an understanding of women in the Viking Age, and has organized the book according to these sources. Archaeological evidence from grave sites gives us much information about wealthy women in particular, and evidence from house-sites tell us more about ordinary women's lives. Evidence from runes is especially fascinating, as runic inscriptions are often short and cryptic. Yet here we often find what women actually wrote or accomplished, for example memorial stones they raised to honour dead relatives, or stones raised in honour of them building a bridge. Jesch looks at Scandinavian women travelling abroad (e.g. evidence from place names in England) and women mentioned in foreign writings, and how other cultures viewed them. She also looks at how they are portrayed in art, myths and poetry.

Finally Jesch extracts some common themes from these sources, and identifies some common female types, for example the warrior woman and the inciter. (For this, however, I would recommend "Old Norse Images of Women" by Jenny Jochens.)

There are numerous excellent photos and illustrations in this book, which really help bring it to life. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Viking/Norse history.
