The Art of Dying offers much information, including very practical information, for dealing with the end of life--information not present in many other books, most of which focus primarily on the spirituality of dying, and communicating with loved ones before you die. Although these are terribly important issues, practical advice about arranging finances, preparing advance directives to ensure for or against extraordinary resuscitation efforts, and learning what to expect in the last few moments of life are questions that have been addressed in few other books.
In particular, I appreciate Weenolsen's very pragmatic list of things not to say to children. For instance, she recommends you not say you're "just going to sleep," lest they develop a subsequent fear of sleeping.
If you're facing death soon, or if you believe that one ought to prepare to die at any time, this book will serve you well.

The book uses plenty of real-life examples to illustrate how animals can help human beings cope with illness. As I work in the Mental-Health field I was particularly struck by the opening example of a young dog's part in improvement of the health of a man suffering from depression. It rang some very familiar bells, and it was good to have some of the scientific background explained concisely and in a refreshingly jargon-free manner.
Mr Graham has a clear empathy for both patients and animals, as well as a considered and reasonable approach. This is not a book that says 'get a cat and you'll be cured', but one which studies the part animals can play alongside more conventional treatments. For me, this means that the book takes you on a journey rather than tries to win you over, and is all the more convincing for it.
In places it reminded me of some of Oliver Sacks' books with all its keen observations and attention to detail, combined with its very human, life-affirming qualities. There's some good jokes, too.
The book didn't leave me feeling like an expert, but then it didn't try to. Rather it gave me a taste of the whole intruiging topic, and left me wanting to know and learn more. It was helpful, then, to find plenty of further resources and contacts listed at the end of the book.
In all, the perfect introduction to Animal Assisted Therapy, and ideal for anyone interested in animals and our relationships with them.

touches...from the ancient Babylonians, Hebrews, Greeks, Persians, and Romans to the exile itself.
But don't think you're only going to get history and stories. Daniel is a rich apocolyptic writing...Calaway's specialty. (See also his book "Revealing the Revelation"). If you've read the Bible before, test yourself: do you remember Daniel's vision of the statue, the great tree, and the four beasts? (Chapter 5.) Did you understand the references to the seventy weeks? (Chapter 6.) If it's a realation to Revelation you're looking for, hold onto your hat. Calaway doesn't only discuss it, he makes sure that you understand its relevence for today, right now, on the street where you live. (Chapter 7.) Appendices, a bibliography, and index complete the work.
Students of the Bible and seekers alike (not to mention the curious) will find "Discernment from Daniel" most worthy of their time.

The account of the government's digraceful treatment of Oppenheimer is chilling, reminding us of how the people at the top here were much like the leaders in the USSR.
