I recently saw Debbie speak and I just had to buy her book. She has this energy that just lifts you up and makes you feel strong, so of course "Turn on Your Inner Light" was a must have for me. Once again, Debbie did not dissapoint me, now I have her strength with me at home, whenever I need it. The excercises are easy to do and I am already seeing results-mind body and soul. Oprah-watch out!

Debbie was my 11th grade English Teacher
Mrs. Mandel was my 11th grade English teacher in Yeshiva of Flatbush, Joel Braverman High Scool. She was really a unique teacher. When we were learning "The Scarlet Letter" she would wear a sweater with a scarlet "B" on it (it was up to the students to guess what it meant...and unanimously we all agreed on one). She taught us not to be vague and made us rewrite 195% of all our papers. She did love to kick box so I can see why she left teaching to become the "fitness guru" that she is. Well I wish her the very best luck in life. And even though we all thought she's NUTS, she definitely did help us learn how to write much better.
p.s. I never read the book. I found out about her from the Welcome screen on AOL.

I hate to exercise, yet I love this book.
Imagine finding a book about maintaining health and fitness that has a chapter written just for me. I hate to exercise, but this book has made it fun. By focusing on the interrelationship between mind, body, and spirit, this book makes sense for those of us who want to keep fit but don't want to spend all day in a gym. I feel like the author is a cheerleader, a voice in my head encouraging me to greater accomplishments. Following the easy suggestions has helped me find ways to include fitness activities (mental and physical) in my daily routines. I hardly feel like I'm working out, but I do feel better already. Bravo!

A Beautiful Achievement for People & Health Care
Just holding this magnificent book is a thrill. It's 800 pages seem like a caress rather than a task as the book's preface writer, Dr. Bernie Seigel, states: " this book is for everyone". The McClanahan's have been working on this challenge for over a decade! It is woven like the finest oriental silk rug as each thread comes from life itself and the aesthetics of its design and substance instill the same emotional and intellectual reaction that a great hand made rug has on a prospective buyer. So much knowledge and wisdom are part of this great weaving that I found myself hungry to read sections apart from any given particular interest area simply by virtue of the sweep and grasp of the amazing brother and sister writing team's power. We all experience a terrible deep seated apprehension of our culture's medical care system for it is grounded in the most barbarous preoccupation with profit, innimical to genuine quality health care. Thus the angst embedded in approaching being and getting well, especially when we are assaulted by illness or disease, results in a pain often worse than the reality of our medical/health problem. The crystal clear journey that Doctors Sandra and David take us on is so friendly, so characterized by an ancient sweetness flowing from the edict to "do no harm". Theirs is truly an interest in our understanding... not being victimized by the fear of the unknown, the arrogant, the subjugating norm that is so part of our medical service system and culture in America. This book makes a major contribution to empowering all of us as we expose ourselves to the danger of dependence in that speciality of medicine where hybris is at its most menacing.

This book is a healing environs, walking us through our anatomy, chapeter by chapter, after setting the context of the path to wellness that we each experience. I think that this new and refreshing volume is a must as a sanctuary inside every family's cupboard of comforting and nourishing essentials.

A must for every patient and physician
In this exhaustive guide through the oft confusing and terrifying land of illness and it's many treatment options, the Doctors Maclanahan cover the topic from head to foot, mountain top to waterfront. As a surgical educator I found the descriptions of the mechanism of disease clear and concise. The treatment options are equally instructive and should be easily understood by the majority of the readers. For the patient, this is an essential reference for sorting out their symptoms before heading off to the clinic. Arriving at the doctor's office better informed they will be better able to retain the all too often confusing explanations and complicated care plans. In the strained environment of modern health care, these critical discussions are more likely to be monologues dished out in the time pressured, intimidating environment of the office to a stunned patient unable to absorb their meaning.

For the practitioner, be they medical student to experienced surgeon, this will be one of the more "well-worn" references that will spend more time on the desk and nightstand than the bookshelf. Particularly in these times of increased popularity of alternative therapy among patients, it behooves the modern physician to better understand the myriad of treatment options and their likelihood of success. Only with a better understanding of all the options, can we physicians make informed decisions that represent the best options for our patients to restore their health and engender their trust.

Every family should own this book!
Dr.s McLanahan have made a unique and extraordinarily valuable contribution to health care. Truly this is a resource, not only for making wise choices when faced with the possiblity of a surgical procedure, but for also maintaining and improving your and your family's health. Integrative medicine (combining the best of conventional Western medicine with the best of alternative/complementary medicine) is rapidly becoming mainstream. Dr. Sandra McLanahan has been a pioneer in alternative/complementary medicine for over 25 years, and her brother is an outstanding surgeon with impeccable training and credentials. Both of them are very clear and down to earth writers, and their combined effort is very readable for people without medical training. Because of my own interest in integrative medicine, I've read most of this book. Because of its size and scope, however, this is probably not something most people will want to do. Used as a reference text, reading areas of personal interest because of personal or family medical issues will be of great interest to all people who care about their health. Having it available as a reference text when worrisome symptoms arise, or new medical diagnoses are made will provide all medical consumers with a much greater wealth of options than they are likely to receive from their medical practitioner. The information is well researched, documented, and credible, and can go a long way toward educating medical professional who have not yet taken the plunge into the huge and often bewildering area of alternative and complementary medicine.

Resilience is an Emotional Intelligence competency
I coach people in emotional intelligence, including being resilient. This book is like my Bible ... this and all Al Siebert's documented research. He actually looked at resilient seniors to see what traits they had. If you're a survivor, you'll enjoy reading all about yourself in this book, and feeling understood, perhaps for the first time. If you aren't a survivor, read it anyway. The time to build resilience is before the calamity occurs. It can be learned. It's the best antidote to stress there is, and it will make you change-proficient, a trait you need in 2003!

Excellent guide on resilience
This is a wonderfully written book: clear, comprehensive and incredibly insightful. It helps you discover if you are a survivor or not, become one if you are not already, and avoid persecution that sometimes comes your way when you are naturally a survivor personality. I found that last part a fascinating irony: you might think, as I did before reading this book, that it is a 100% great thing to be a survivor. Unfortunately, people in the lives of survivors often criticize and attack them for the very traits that allow them to survive and prosper. To help survivors deal with this, Siebert provides invaluable information on what he calls, "surviving being a survivor." Here is one of my favorites of his many insights on this extremely important issue:

He says that resilient people are often mistaken by others, who are not so good at surviving adversity, as being "pessimists." A survivor is very talented at anticipating possible problems at work and at home and planning a response to them. (Much like the old saying, "Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.") People who hate to look before they leap often accuse survivors of being needlessly fearful, stick-in-the-mud thinkers. Of course, when the inevitable happens,... the ready-or-not-here-I-come types, who do they always run to for help digging out of the mess they've failed to anticipate? The survivor, of course.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who needs help successfully living through traumas and catastrophes in his/her life (just about all of us!). The stories Siebert tells of survivors, including analysis of what they did to recover from agonizing events and why their approaches worked, are both practical and inspiring.

The story of my life
If you've ever felt that no one knows you, that you have so many contradictory traits, or that you are a little warped because you can find humor in anything: Get this book.

So maybe you are a little warped, but what's wrong with that? I've been through hell and I didn't like the cooking, but I am here to testify that Al Siebert knows his stuff. I could have been dead years ago, or a mindless drone now, but I survived. And thrived. You can, too.

Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein: Or the Modern Prometheus
Published in Hardcover by Underwood Books (1995)
Authors: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Bernie Wrightson
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $172.50

Pride of place on my bookshelf
I have the hardcover edition of this book. The oversize illustrations by Wrightson are amazing. When friends visit and thumb through it, they are always taken aback by the strength and subtlety of Wrightson's pen. One drawing is a two page spread of Dr. Frankenstein's lab, a 10" x 20" pen and ink drawing crammed with magnificent detail.

The text is in large type, but laid out very well, so a great way to gets older kids into this seminal novel.

Stunning illustration
Berni Wrightson, in what is probably the crowning achievement of his career, masterfully illustrates this romantic classic in superb full-page pen and ink. Wrightson's conception of the monster is both horrifying and frighteningly sympathetic, and he demonstrates both his talent for capturing dynamism and motion as well as his grasp of the emotional conflicts of the story. A note to literary students, however: this is an abridged version of Mary Shelley's work, albeit an effective one. A must-read for any well-rounded literary, and a must-see for any student or master of art. Also see _Berni Wrightson: A Look Back_ for a retrospective of Wrightson's work and the lost pages from _Frankenstein_.

Wrightson's Frankenstein is the ultimate version of the book
No one will doubt that Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is a classic of horror fiction. It shows the horrific result when a man tries to play God. But this version of Frankenstein features the chilling (but amazing) illustrations by Bernie Wrightson. He truly brings to life the self-loathing creation of Dr. Frankenstein, with his gory appearance and enraged expressions. He expertly renders the landscapes of France and Germany, where the book takes place. These illustrations compliment perfectly Shelly's tale of the struggle between the man and his monster. A must for any Illustration student or horror fan. Definitely buy a copy. Buy two, in case you lose one.

Milk Mania: Better than the first book!! Get it!!
Milk Mustache Mania is a must-have for any fans of the ad campaign!! It is thinner and not as long as the first book (The Milk Mustache Book) but it is better IMO because they have all the brand new ads featured in full-color pages that also include a detailed description of the people featured in each ad and interesting tidbits about why they decided to do an ad or little facts like how Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle helped make the chocolate milk in his ad!!

This book is at a gerat price for what you get and it's a really interesting read as well as an addition to anyone's collection of milk ads!!

Loved this book
The milk ads are the best, I've been collecting them for a long time and it's really great to have them all in one cool book. My friends are all talking about this. I loved the first book and love this one too! Keep those ads coming...can't wait to see who is next!

Finally - More Milk Ads!
If you are a fan of the milk mustache ads, this book is a must. I have the first book, but it doesn't have all of the newer ads in it. This one has all the ads that weren't in the first book. It's really great!

I never realized how I referred to past experiences to respond to life now. Tony helps you see that, and motivates you to change your view.

A great book. I enjoyed it.

Great tape for the long drive home to create references!
I thoroughly enjoyed this tape !

You'll love how Tony explains what references are and how to create them in your life using NAC. NAC stands for Neuro Associative Conditioning.

He has a person you can model every month in each of his tape series. Want to know who he's interviewing this month.

Buy this tape! Good tape from PowerTalk Series!

What are (personal) references....
Before this information, I was little aware at best that my brain was constantly referring to past experience, to try and help me perceive the present, nor did I understand how poor references made for poor outcomes. A must for those interested in self-awareness.

The Traveling Charbonneaus

More Than One Kind of Journey
Bernie Schallehn skillfully and effectively employs the journey metaphor in his novel The Traveling Charbonneaus. Not only does the Charbonneau family travel to out-of-the-way places in the north country of New York State to play country music in expectation of their long awaited big break, they also journey in other ways to discover who they really are as individuals and as members of a family unit under the leadership of patriarch, Wen`dell(his favored pronunciation), the local septic cleaner. As years pass, a "big break" eludes the family, except for instrumentally and vocally gifted daughter Chantelle.

Some members of the traveling Charbonneau Family Band never leave home, yet loyal and loving wife June asserts her individuality when she makes the decision to travel with the family no longer since by Wendell's edict, Chantelle doesn't exist due to her "betrayal."

Daughter Patrice, gifted with extensive knowledge of musical instruments and engineering, takes the risk of falling in love with her father's choice of replacement for Chantelle in the family band.

Cherished son David learns coping strategies for dealing with his disability. Soon David begins to acquire personal integrity and much greater independence.

Much later and an undisputed musical success, Chantelle risks a surprise visit home. Patrice finds true love and a committed father to her son. Even later, June and David find even more independence working together at the local IGA. Through it all, Wendell Charbonneau continues to 'live large," make music, and love fiercely. He is committed to his belief in this truth: Neither he nor we are what we do for a living. The tragedy is that we often live as if we are. Wendell is such a literary force to reckon with he keeps readers on the edges of their seats as he lives his life pulling out all the stops. Near the end of the book and Wendell's life, we also see his greatness and heroism in other memorable ways.

If you like something different...
Look, if you like your characters and plot lines mindless and predictable you'll want to skip past this and Schallehn's other books. If you're looking for a read that'll make you think, confuse you and occasionally warm your heart, then, by all means, get the Charbonneaus.

Schallehn has a nack for developing unique characters and bringing them to life--they're usually not pretty but they're [darn] sure not predictable. Along the way you'll get a chance to do what alot of us got out of the habit of doing since the advent of cable tv--think.

Take this trip with the Charbonneaus--I'm guessing you'll enjoy the ride.

north country blues
I loved this book.Mr.Schallehn is a gifted writer, whose characters are easily recognizable and infinitely believable. The story moves quickly. He has really captured the small town North Country life, and the hopes and dreams of the people living there. There is so much to like in this book: comedy, drama, tragedy, and the entire breadth of human emotions. I recommend it highly.

A favorite!
This is without a doubt my favorite writing/reference book. If I was on a desert island with just one writing book, this one would be it (and I have 2 copies). The many lists on a wide variety of genres makes it a perfect brainstorming tool you can use over and over for fiction or scripts.

Finally! A book that delivers!
I love this book! If you write ANY type of fiction, this is a great tool to have for those days slow days infront of a blank screen.

A compendium of quick and easy "things to do"
In The Writer's Partner: 1001 Breakthrough Ideas To Stimulate Your Imagination, television script writer Martin Roth draws upon his many years of experience and expertise to present a compendium of quick and easy "things to do" to get started with a writing project, or embellish one already underway. From ideas for character development and plotting, this invaluable resource goes on to address genre categories including science fiction, horror, romance, comedy, sports, crime, westerns, and more. The other Soto master
This is a great book! When most people think of Japanese masters who brought Soto Zen to the US they think of S. Suzuki, but I feel this book is way better than Maezumi's San Francisco counterpart's Zen Mind Beginer's Mind. Appreciate Your Life is far better at getting to the heart of Zen.

excellent
A refreshing, personal approach to zen buddhism, after the (on purpose) mind numbing of the Blue Cliff Record or the Gateless Gate. Often very inspiring. Right up there with Shunryu Suzuki and all the other more colorful modern Japanese lineage. We who think we are lost, feel more found, after this finger.

A+ Aromatherapy
A wonderous kit for all "budding" Aromatherapists! Very well written explanation of "What is Aromatherapy", gives "user-friendly" explanations of the chemical properties of the oils, extraction methods & cautions for using specific oils. The "A-Z of Essential Oils" Chapter explains the origin of the specific oil, its main constituents, qualities, traditional uses & cautions. Also, included are "must have" charts that give info on application and use of oils for specific ailments. There is also a chapter that teaches how each application is performed. This book has been like a bible for me. A complete source book for all budding Aromatherapists. I highly recommend it.

Excellent resource to discover essentials of aroma therapy
This book helps you create a spa experience at home. Complete instructions on use of essential oils as well as samples of wonderful oils. Charts for using oils for common ailments & cautions too. Massage techniques. History of aroma therapy and dictionary of oils and their uses. Besides all this it is a beautiful book !
