This book for people who like mysteries.
I liked this book because it was very exciting. It was very suspenseful. I like mysteries beacause I like to guess the endings to the books I read and this one was fun to guess. This book is about when several bombs go off in the bus depot and the police are trying to find who is setting them off. They think that Bearie's family is setting the bomb's off. You have to find out what happens next in the book.

Funny and clever!
She is an awsome author!! She keeps you guessing all the way through this book! the ending was great! Young Readers like me will not be disappointed!

A long infomercial with some valuable content
Bernie wrote the second-best book on target shooting with compound bows (the best is James Park's "Mastering Compound Bows," which is about to get an ISBN number). While Bernie's book can be an annoying infomercial at various times, pushing his various products, there is no doubt that contains valuable information, particularly for Vegas-style (18m) indoor spot shooting, so it is well worth a read. The best aspect of this book is its diagnostic pictures which help one detect mistakes in their form.

The best book in archery is on the topic of recurve bows, and this is Rick McKinney's "The Simple Art of Winning."

If you have target panic or want to improve, read this!
This book is an excellent overview of the authors (Bernie's) mobile shooters school. It covers bow set up, tuning, shooting form, the shot sequence and mental aspects of archery and much more. The author is a NFAA master coach and does a nice job of uncovering a lot of misconceptions about archery as well as pointing out many of the things that are often overlooked that will help your game. This book has a lot of great information but unfortunately it lacks an index. It is mostly geared for the compound target archer, however, there is also a nice section covering 3D and bowhunting.

A good summer reading if you like books about music
A really enjoyable book. The main character runs away from hislife in the shadow of his famous, rock star father and hitch hikes hisway to a small town in Maine. There, he becomes friends with a nice family and gets a job at their store, he also joins a band. He is really enjoying his life there but is continually reminded of his father whom his friends know nothing about. A fun book to read because it is so honest.

Avid and not-so-avid teen readers will enjoy this book
If you enjoy seeing an adolescent with their nose in a book, give them this one. This well written novel immediately captured the interest of my 14 year old son. His review from start to finish was "awesome". Appropriate adolescent themes such as self identity and alienation are explored in a thoughtful and mature fashion within a story that will be especially appealing to teens with an interest in rock music. If you're having trouble encouraging your adolescent to read, or would like to treat them to a good summertime read, I highly recommend this book.

D.B. Cooper: The Real McCoy
I have not read this book, although I have done extensive research on D.B. Cooper and Richard McCoy Jr. and I had read in my research that Richard McCoy Jr. was sentenced to 45 years in 1972 for hijacking and endangering the crew. I never heard that he had been shot, and would like to find out more. I will most definately be buying this book, but I just wanted to get the word out there.

Stranger than fiction
Absolutely fascinating, thoroughly researched book. This story is amazing but tragic--I came close to shedding a few tears for poor McCoy at the end of the book.
The author does a great job of backing up his claims with research, and honestly expresses his regrets about the things he wishes he would have asked McCoy.
Excellent read.

Was sooo wrong before.
I wrote a review before, but I was very wrong. I went to the library and checked out this book. It was so great, I learned small details that I didn't know before. This book goes into so much detail, it's amazing. When before I didn't know much about Richard Floyd McCoy Jr., now I know so much more. It seems that people can relate to him for being just an ordinary guy. The Cooper-McCoy similarities are too many to be coincidental. For a Cooper-McCoy fan it is very interesting. Although, if someone is into true crime, it is also great. I am sorry for my review earlier.

Well Done
I am not a big fan of Bernie Sanders at all. I can not support him in any way because he is too radical for my taste as a Moderate Democrat. But this book was very well written. The writing clearly reflects something that he went through as a member of the US House. But I did notice that Bernie accuses everyone for America's problems. It's always someone else's fault. He never mentions his failures which are important to understand as a public official, and what he has really done. I found Bernie to complain almost all the time, but on the other hand, it was very well written, interesting and informative in vermont politics. I enjoyed it, but the more I read it, the more I liked the Republican caniddate that was running against him in 1996.

Very enlightening
Sanders does a few wonderful things in this book - first off, he shows what socialists truly believe - I now realize that, while I don't agree with them, I got a false impression of their views from the mass media. The book also gives a detailed account of how hard it is to make it as a third party candidate in America, and does so without becoming dull at any points. Finally, Sanders covers a wide range in issues in this book. Overall, very interesting for anyone even remotely interested in American politics.

A wonderful book by the only Independent in the Congress!
OUTSIDER IN THE HOUSE is an interesting and intriguing book by the only Independent in the Hosue of Representatives, and the only Independent *ever* elected to four consecutive terms! How did formerly conservative Vermont elect a democratic socialist as its Representative in the House? This book will tell you. How did Bernie Sanders first get elected Mayor of Vermont's largest city? What did he tell Bill Clinton when they met? What does it feel like to see your Congressional colleagues gutting welfare? What is the 52-member Progressive Ccaucus, and why did Bernie Sanders help found it? This book answers all these questions in a fast-paced narrative which weaves together Sanders'most recent re-election campaign (targeted by the Republican leadership, the NRA, and corporate America, he managed to win by 23 points!), his fights on Capitol Hill, and a brief history of the most successful progressive political movement in modern America. And if that is not enough, the book concludes with a clear-eyed look at America's major problems -- and presents reasonable ways of addressing each of them. Highly recommended. [Of course, you might consider that this review was written by the book's co-author, Huck Gutman....] Still, I think you will like it, and be energized by reading it. Our purpose in writing it, after all, was to give people hope: it is really possible to take on the corporate powers and big money interests, and beat them at the electoral game.

Hear! Hear!
When one takes in nature or the wilderness, we experience usually through our eyes. We may stop to hear the birds or notice the howl of a distant wolf, but primarily our senses our limited to optics. The acoustic world of the wild is mostly beyond our reach. What worlds are out there for our ears to discover? And how do we uncover them? Wild Soundscapes by Bernie Krause is an introduction into listening to the sounds of the natural world. It is quite amazing how when most look at aspects of the environment, whether is a tropical rainforest or African savannah, the orchestra of sounds that envelop such settings rarely get any notice. They of course are heard but is the concerto felt and understood? Wild Soundscapes by Bernie Krause will help you discover sound, what is sound and how important soundscapes are. He offers a simple guide of listening exercises to discover the soundscapes of your backyard or favorite parks. They are easy to follow and comprehensive. Wild Soundscapes is also a premier guide to nature recording. Complete with equipment, recording and production tips and techniques. Bernie Krause has created a remarkably ear-opening book. It even includes a 55 minute cd of various Bernie Krause soundscape recordings. Wild Soundscapes is very, very refreshing because it will let you experience the outdoors that we all love in an entirely new way. Hear! Hear!

Field Recording 101
This book is basically a "how-to" guide for making field recordings. Dr. Krause -- who is the undisputed best at this -- takes the reader through such steps as choosing appropriate equipment, determining a good locale, protecting equipment from the elements, cataloging your recordings, editing and assembling afterwards, etc. Using his own mistakes as examples, his advice promises to save beginners countless hours of aggravation. An illustrative (narrated) CD of soundscape examples accompanies the text.

My only complaints would be that he sometimes aims a bit too low -- the glossary defines "quiet" and "mic" for crying out loud -- and he automatically assumes that anybody else entering the field will want to duplicate exactly what he's done (which of course would be pretty pointless). He also apparently doesn't see the inherent contradiction between "Nature is an overused and abtract word, intertwined with a tradition that has created an 'it/us' dichotomy that separates us from the very world we try to describe" [p.2] and "In 1968 it took 15 recording hours to get one hour's worth of natural sound. Now, due to human noise and disturbed habitats, it takes about 2,000 hours to get the same result" [p.3].

Still, this is a valuable field guide for anybody starting out.

Enhanced with an accompanying 55 minute CD
Wild Soundscapes: Discovering The Voice Of The Natural World by naturalist and soundscape recorder Bernie Krause is an engaging introduction to the wondrous world of natural soundscapes. Simple listening exercises, advice for recording natural sounds, equipment tips fill the pages of this practical, "user friendly", and thoroughly enjoyable guide to the "singing" of ants, the quiet rustle of desert sand dunes, and much, much more. Enhanced with an accompanying 55 minute CD of fascinating wildlife and wilderness audio soundscapes, Wild Soundscapes is a unique and very highly recommended addition to any personal, professional, academic, or community library Nature Studies or Out Door Recreation reference collection.

The side of scuba diving that most people don't know
Bernie Chowduhry presents an insightful, brutally honest, no-holds-barred look at the world of technical diving in "The Last Dive". Using his own personal knowledge and years of diving experience, he tells the story of Chris and Chrissy Rouse in a non-judgmental way that allows the reader to decide for him or herself whether the two men were justified or dove for the wrong reasons. The book explores the psyche behind people who engage in high risk activities and also presents the Rouse family background which may or may not have contributed to their fatal dive.
I feel that the book is a must-read for people either engaged in technical diving or in the process of training as technical divers, such as myself. "The Last Dive" really encourages the reader to think about risk management, proper training, and self-evaluation while diving in conditions beyond the recreational level. Along the same lines, the book also serves as a historical perspective on technical diving, an arena which is becoming more visible and increasing safety by bringing knowledge to divers beyond the confines of closed-door groups and garage gas blenders. However, I would not highly recommend this book to newly certified divers, or else warn them to read with proper context in mind, as Chowduhry's accounts can certainly scare the living hell out of just about anyone!
My one criticism of the book is that Chowduhry spends a great deal of time early in the reading discussing the history, physiology, and physics of diving, including a lot of diver-speak, which make it bland and slow for the non-diver or divers with less knowledge on these subjects. While important in explaining what went wrong in the Rouses' final dive, I feel it could have been a bit more abbreviated.
Overall, a great read and an insight into one of mankind's final frontiers.

Riveting and Creepy
This book laid around in the seconds bin at my supermarket for weeks before i finally picked it up, attracted by the awesome cover. It turned out to be one of the best non-fiction books I've read in years! Completely riveting from start to finish. Fascinating in its explanation of the technical aspects of various types of diving, and also a highly engaging story of the fates of individual divers including the author and the duo who made the eponymous Last Dive. Whether you dive or not (i am *barely* a diver), this is a terrific book that I'd recommend to anyone. I don't know where this Chowdhury guy learned to write (in the book he is a computer geek by day and diver on weekends though evidently he now owns a magazine) but he is right up there with Jon Krakauer, IMHO. Thanks for the gripping insight into a world few of us will ever see.

Extremely well-written story, but the 'tragedy' doesn't play
I am a technical diver with some wreck experience, although I do not possess the advanced training (Full Cave, Deep Air, etc.) of either the author or the father-and-son team who perished, the Rousses. I found Bernie Chowdhury's "The Last Dive" to be an exciting, well-told account of a very unfortunate accident, but I must respectfully say that the two divers featured in the title did not earn my sympathy.I live in Alaska, and every year men and women die in this state pursuing activities that are not unduly dangerous--hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, flying, and the like. Sometimes the accidents are the result of poor planning, inadequate equipment, and a failure to grant nature the respect it demands. But sometimes people die when it seems they did everything right, the victims of plain bad luck. Chris and Chrissy Rouse fall into both categories.

In the end, I give Mr. Chowdhury high marks for a fine job of telling the story of his two friends. The many background details on diving were fascinating and accurate, and the author's re-creation of the Rousses' last dive on the U-boat had me on the edge of my seat. But if there's a lesson here, it's that technical diving does not lend itself to people with Chris and Chrissy's competitive personalities and careless attitudes.

A Mystery Buffs Dream Weekend
This is a tribute to Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler, all rolled into one neat murder mystery. Bernie and Carolyn spend the weekend in a New England guesthouse, which attempts to replicate an authentic old English manor. When guests begin showing up murdered, it's Bernie who plays the part of Hercule Poirot or, if you like, Philip Marlowe, as he gathers the clues, which will hopefully lead him to the murderer before too many more guests are knocked off. Being a guesthouse, there are suspects aplenty delivering us ample opportunity to figure out the mystery ourselves. If mystery fans will be delighted by this book, then fans of the British crime story will be even more so. Combining the wit and humour of Lawrence Block with the traditional murder mystery creates a deadly weekend, though presented in a light and breezy manner.

Absolutely delightful,enthralling and fullfilling
Bernie Rhodenbarr invites Carolyn to join him for a weekend at Cuttleford House, a Massachusetts bed and breakfast. Now bring along a good looking woman like Carolyn should leave one to think that bernie is interested in a weekend of good loving. Only problem is Carolyn is a lesbian, a fact that Bernie is well aware of. Being the book lover (and Burglar) that Bernie is, he needs to steal a rare Raymond Chandler first edition of the BIG SLEEP which happens to include an inscription by the great author. ...... However, as seems to be the norm for Bernie (just try the previous seven tales in this satirical series to confirm that point and have an enjoyable reading experience), his plan goes awry when a blizzard traps everyone inside the bed and breakfast. Soon people mysteriously start getting killed and to Bernie's chagrin, the rare detective story is stolen by someone else. The latter does not sit well with Bernie, who begins to act more like Inspector Poirot investigating a case than the burglar he normally. ..... THE BURGLAR IN THE LIBRARY is a fantastic addition to one of the best satirical mystery series on the market today. Bernie and his friends are great characters, and the story line is witty and jocular. Readers who enjoy a light-hearted jab at the Agatha Christie novels will love the latest novel from Lawrence Block. ......Harriet Klausner

Another great book from Lawrence Block
I am hooked on Block's "burglar" series! This is the fourth Bernie mystery I've read and they only continue to get better and better! Block sends up classic mysterys (this one focused on Agatha Christie) while maintaining their set-up and plot development.

Unlike so many authors, Block doesn't assume his audience are idiots. He writes intellignet and well-crafted mysteries that amuse and entertain. While the books can get slow at times, the action is never too far off. A true test of fiction for me is whether you ever want to put the book down. When you're reading a good novel, you should want to read straight through and dread having to set the story aside. That's the case with Block's "Burglar" books...they are a solid, entertaining read from start to finish!
