Life of the Ancient Egyptians

general overview of Ancient Egyptian life
This book provides much information on Ancient Egyptian society. The chapters are organized by themes, each dealing with different subjects, which include childbirth, education, entertainment, marriage, funerary beliefs and mummification. Written for the layperson, the reader will find many illustrations and an excellent bibliography for further consultation. This is a recommended study of Ancient Egyptian life.

Fascinating!
A pleasure to look at, and a pleasure to read! The illustrations are superb. The text also is excellent. The author is not only an experienced archaeologist, but also an anthropologist, knowledgeable both in medicine and biology. Unlike many other handsome books on ancient Egypt, he does not stop at the impressive architectural remains, and the pictures and sculptures detected in the tombs, but uses them, together with additional material, to provide a vivid and fascinating insight into the lives and thoughts of the ordinary people, from 4000 BCE to Roman times.

You can't say enough nice about this book.....
I'm not one of the sort of people who falls often for heart warming. I'm too bitter, too jaded... too educated to be able to gush openly about kindly regard for many things. This book, though, deserves that kind of praise.

As you could gather from the blurbs from magazines, this is a hundred year old book that seeks to illustrate the lives of typical, everyday (not to say uninteresting) Americans. The book is short; it's stories are realistic. Thus, it gives great insight into our collective 'ancestry': a voice to the long-dead.

I'm inclined to think that every time I mentally want to destroy America, in this book, again, could be found renewed hope and exploration. In this book one can find the stories of Lithuanians who set out to cross the ocean, of free black women finding for the first time life in a segregated south, of Greek pushcart workers who end up with $50,000 in the bank. More or less, these are the voices that give our community continuity.... and, well, I'm starting to ramble and make little sense....

Just read the book....

especially charming, direct, informative
This book should be more widely available. I find it full of the kind of detail about peoples' lives (in this case, immigrants to the United States) that are cogent, relevant, and delivered with considerable charm and lack of artifice. Everyone to whom I have given a copy of this book has raved about it.

A good supplementary introduction
This is a good introduction to Mark appropriate for all mainstream, non-conservative Protestant laypeople (I'm Lutheran ELCA myself), to be read in addition to - but not instead of - Rhoads et. al's "Mark as Story" and even more accessible than that essential general study.

It's basically a study of Mark focusing on it as the Gospel that's hardest on the disciples, submitting to us that the disciples failed and it's our responsibility to complete their mission and challenging us to finish the story. It also explores the fascinating 1st century background in which the Gospel was written - including the effect that the Jewish War and the destruction of the temple must have had on Mark's community. There are several references to the inadequacy of the RSV of the bible that will start to become dated as more people start using the NRSV, but that's a relatively minor criticism all in all.

An enjoyable read designed for general readers rather than scholars.

Really Understanding Mark
The bible is more complex than most people realize or care to admit. This book really goes deep into full meaning from the history of first century Jewish faith. This book is a must. You will never go back and read Mark the same way. This book increased my knowledge and therefore ended up increasing my appreciation of Jesus (And Mark).

Wonderful, entertaining reading for any age!
This book is fun to read for children as well as adults. It has all the elements of a classical fairy tale - with fascinating characters and an imaginative setting. It is beautifully written and the front cover is a piece of art in itself! I loved it!

The book by Phyllis Lambert "Mies in America" is the most intelligent and correct interpretation of the work of this master architect that has yet appeared in book form.
It is deep in detail of all his major works in this country.
It is a necessary read for all architects and historians of contemporary architecture who seek knowledge of this major twenith century artist .
The research done for this writing puts the work considerably ahead of any other Mies publication.

A welcome focus on Van Der Rohe in America
It is a rare occasion to find such an exhaustive study done on an artists work anywhere. Although the work of Van Der Rohe will always be seen as a vital contribution to the history of architecture, the depth and focus of the essays in this catalog will certainly bring appreciation beyond a simple fetishization of Van Der Rohe's Barcelona Pavillion. The inclusion of models, sketches, historical photographs, and works of art from his time offer a multi-faceted explanation of his works and their importance. It is a book that is not only scholarly in nature but also has a beauty that will engross the reader whether they take the time to read the essays or not. The book gets better the more you look at it and the final essay by Koolhaas offers a refreshing and pointed critique of the role of the conservator of Mies' work and how alive his work is. In this age where high modernism has been reduced to style without context and weight this book takes one of its best practitioners, shakes the dust the things that Van Der Rohe created, and offers us a stellar view of a brilliant contribution to American life.

Paideia : the ideals of Greek culture

Lights up the western world
The book shows how the greek people were the first to concentrate their attention on the perfection of MAN and his place in society. Jaeger traces this fact from Homeric times through Plato and explains it through many outstanding writers such as Hesiod, Solon, Sophocles, and many more. He shows the powerful Ideals of the greeks in all their beauty which continue to live on in the world today. He reveals how Poetry, Philosophy, Rhetoric, Politics, Medicine, etc. have their basis in the quest to reach the highest standard imaginable for man and society. The space contributed to Plato is subtantial and the first volume is really only an intro to Plato by the authors own admission. That's a four hundred page intro! But it all leads to the greatest of inventions...Philosphy. I enjoyed the whole book, but the second volume "the search for the divine center" was the best part explaining many things about Plato. To understand in greater depth the influence of these ideals on the western world I recommend reading a book (which I read first) called "The Classical Tradition" by Gilbert Highet whom is also the translator of this book. That book reveals how most of the surviving great works throughout western history were written by authors who were well aware of the greek world and their ideals including many writers in the Christian tradition. Jaeger wrote a short book called "Greek Paideia and Early Christianity" which shows that connection very well. He has convinced me beyond doubt of his statement that the ancient greeks are the educators of the western world.

A Work of Arete
Anyone with an interest in Ancient Greece must read this book! Jaeger weaves elements of history, anthropology, philosophy, and psychology with masterful dexterity. I've read a number of general texts on Ancient Greek culture. There are some quite good ones out there. H.D.F. Kitto's, The Greeks, is another favorite of mine. Nevertheless, Jaeger's work stands well above the others. He provides a great deal of depth and detail but it never seems to wane as his genius provides a stunning insight on every page. Jaeger uses a concept well-known to classicists, arete, as a synthesizing thread. Paideia, which is roughly equal to our idea of culture, in the sense of 'she is a very cultured woman,' defined the aims and ideals of a Greek education. Arete, a blend of excellence, virtue, nobility, and skill provided a telos for that process of education. Jaeger, using the framework of educational ideals, came to present the true spirit of Ancient Greek culture. This idea, of using educational ideals to survey the depth and breadth of a culture, would rightfully scare a well-educated American. For our educational aims, which are primarily vocational or simply technical, represent a vacuum of higher values and ideals. Even the once powerful currency of 'honor' as a unifying goal has long since expired. A review of Ancient Greece, steeped in values and appreciative of the finest things in life, may rekindle the search and development of values in our own time and place. This book should be a guide for the quest.

"An absolutely useful set of lesson plans..."
"The author of 'Read and Spell by Sound' pioneered this material in public schools for 30 years. She adapted her knowledge as a speech-language pathologist to meet the needs of students who were not learning to read and spell by sight. The result is tremendous. An absolutely useful set of lesson plans to meet the needs of all students struggling to read. This manual, written for the lay person, is a must for every teacher and parent. The pretest is particularly an eye-opener into the complexities of processing sounds for speaking, reading and spelling." G. Darby Bennett, Ph.D.

I strongly recommend this manual.
As a speech language pathologist, Lorna Werner understands that reading cannot be accomplished successfully until the learner has become proficient in spoken language and is aware that each word contains individual sounds (phonemes)....I strongly recommend this manual, especially to parents and teachers of individuals with dyslexia" Sylvia O. Richardson, M.D.

Wonderful book on a fascinating group of plants.
I love Madagascar, especially the succulent plants found there. I was impressed with how many of the plants I have grown were native to that island. Many of my favorite plants are from here and I am always looking for more information on them. The photographs are wonderful. Both volume one and volume two of this book are well worth having. They contain valuable information that I have found nowhere else.

A Masterful work!
This book is the most authoritive book ever written on Madagascan succulents. It has excellent descriptions of the geography and geology of Madagascar and includes hundreds of color pictures. This book has the right balance of technical information and straight forward descriptions. Definately for an enthusiast with the goal of developing a complete reference library! A masterpiece!
