WELL WRITTEN
I read "A Change is Gonna Come" last year and found it be a very informative, well written, history of the relationship between soul/Black music and the Civil Rights/Black Power movement. Werner treats the music like a literary tradition--showing how artists from Sam Cooke, to Aretha Franklin, to rapper KRS-One both were influenced by and helped shape the struggles of social justice. Aretha's fameous signature song "Respect," for example, was about the Black female call for respect from men, but also the Black movement's call for respect by a White racist power structure. Likewise, by the Reagan era, Public Enemy got it just right when they produced "Welcome to the Terrodome," and "Don't Believe the Hype," while N.W.A produced "Fuck the Police"--fameous *speeches* for a repressive era. Werner shows how the music never stops. That while there's always music that makes artists a quick rich buck, there's also serious music that seeks to document and comment on what's happening in the world. I look forward to rereading it again and listening to many of the popular songs he writes about.

Train I ride...
Marvellous stuff. Possibly the best book to be written about music and popular culture for quite some time. Determinedly in the tradition of Greil Marcus & Peter Guralnick, the book re-writes the now well-told tale of "rock" music's history, from what is perhaps the only true perspective - that is, race. Read it.

A Great Book
I really enjoyed the richness of the book.it covers so-many styles and History.it is very well written book.it covers alot of bases. The Different time frames and their Impact. My Only dig is that Music Writers don't acknowledge Michael Jackson enough.face The Music who has had his kind of Impact over the Last 20-30 years?also he didn't really cover the title in depth but i understand.still a must Read.

Galen Rowell's Vision: The Art of Adventure Photography

My favorite book of all-time.
I've read thousands and thousands of books of all types, and this is my favorite one of all-time. This converted me into being a Galen Rowell fan. The photos were great as usual, but what got me was his writing. He is an amazing author! I have learned so much from his writings, and I still learn everytime I re-read the book. He is funny and in addition to being intelligent. His passion comes across clearly in this book. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, and you'd probably become a photographer afterwards.

... the words paint pictures too !
It cannot be helped ... I'm partial to Rowell ... have been, ever since I started serious photography in '89 ... His photographs have always left me in awe ...

So you can imagine my surprise, when I found myself reading the words with as much care as I was looking at the photos ... Rowell carefully describes his preparations, his thoughts and preferences ... he writes as he photographs ... in a direct manner, with few affectations and no gimmicks ... The reader learns not so much about f-stops or apertures, but is introduced into the mind set of an adventurer, an exceptional photographer ... whose approach to image making is both pragmatic and inspirational ... the photographs are more instructional than usual ... but an exceptionally good read!

Adventure, Aesthetics, and Photography
If you wish to become an active, thoughtful photographer, one who is conscientious about seeing, especially from another point of view, and you are willing to take the time and effort to get a shot, this book is for you.

Galen Rowell's essays are richly entwined with clear strands of philosophical, technical, and artistic perspectives.

Like Galen has done most of his life--explore and adventure--the book is an exploration of inner and outer realms. Throughout the 60 essays, we explore the outer, physical world, as well as the inner thoughtful and emotional world that accompanies aesthetic photography.

Galen becomes our guide as he shows us new pathways of exploring photography. We learn to think about creating visual order out of chaos. We see the relationship between thoughtful preparation and capturing an image. While commonsense techniques are suggested, we learn to validate old technology as well as recent innovations. We are apprised of ethical issues when shooting. And most important (for me) we explore the resonance between spirit, content, and form through photography.

This book, with its exquisite images and stories behind them, will likely help you see better, become more contemplative as a photographer, and encourage you to capture that which you see with greater emotional integrity and technical competence.

Move over Martha Stewart...
...thanks to Kitty Werner, women won't be relegated to the kitchen anymore. Kitty humorously gives the lowdown on everything from steps to take when looking for a home to water heater maintenance after the purchase.

A "must have" for anyone looking to buy a home, SWG is literally filled with well-organized, useful information for every homeowner.

Savvy Woman's Guide is a bargain-priced reference book that is destined for the most accessible spot on the smart homeowner's bookshelf.

The Ideal Housewarming Gift
I devoured this book during my first week of home ownership and plan to read it again and again as I go through the first year of being responsible for the safe operation of many new appliances and appurtenances. Kitty Werner has written a comprehensive, easy-to-understand and even entertaining guide to all the things a house has that need to keep running for your comfort and safety. Her recommendations about fire extinguishers, chimneys, escape plans, routine maintenance and such are extremely valuable and eye-opening. She's done her utmost to keep the book relevant and useful whether you live in a city or out in the sticks. Thanks, Kitty!

The Perfect Book for any Homeowner
This book is a godsend for people like me(and my husband)who live in a house, but don't really understand how it works. A house is like a small city. It provides you with water, heat, sewage disposal, shelter, warmth, and all that makes life cozy. But let something go wrong--then you can get desperate. Author Kitty Werner knows just what that's like. She talks about everything from packing up your valuables before you move to insurance (house replacement coverage, etc.), plumbing, electrical systems, repairs, dealing with pesky things, like ants and roaches, and coping with emergencies. She has chapters on such matters as finding a contractor (her father is a retired contractor) and being part of a neighborhood. And she writes about all this in a lively tone--it's as if you are having a personal conversation with the author. I rate this book very highly.

My new favorite
This has quickly become the cookbook I turn to most often (and I have hundreds of them). Everything I've tried has been so flavorful and so easy to pull off. The roasted figs and Indian cashews are now a cocktail party staple (and I keep getting calls for the recipe). Same goes for the cheese and pecan crackers. The bourbon-marinaded steak has made me a much more frequent meat-eater. And just this past weekend I made the incredibly easy buttermilk pie, to much fanfare. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It's OUTSTANDING.

Seasonal best--all year long.
From a small-town country store in the Northern California wine region, comes a great collection of recipes and entertaining ideas using a variety of seasonal products. Authors Carrie Brown and John Werner (with a wonderful assist from cookbook pro Michael McLaughlin) have compiled the very best of seasonal recipes and menu ideas used in the Jimtown Store and its catering business. The recipes are clear and easy to follow (though I wish that the publisher had worked harder to print the COMPLETE recipe on 1 or 2 facing pages--flipping the page in the middle of food prep is a real hassle!). Overall, though, it is a nicely written volume, which provides ideas for springtime suppers, autumn tailgate parties, Fourth of July barbecues, as well as holiday meals. There is an extensive chapter on salads of all sorts, plus another on sauces, condiments, and relishes, just to give us a few new twists on some old stand-by themes. There are some great weekend ideas in the chapter entitled Breakfast Baking. I've already made the maple-glazed meatloaf for dinner (leftovers make terrific sandwiches), and am now planning Grilled Steak with Backyard Bourbon Marinade as well as Apple-Buttermilk Slaw for some weekend lunch guests. Just in time for summer entertaining, this book is destined to become a year-round classic in my kitchen!

Jimtown takes the cake!
One of those unique cookbooks where you'll want to make every recipe, and where you'll actually be able to. Jimtown's style is unfussy, focused on flavor and experience. These recipes mix old and new, national and international cuisine with witty and informative writing. I'm busy working my way through making the recipes and haven't had a dud yet!

Very good beginner's book, just short of 5 stars...
This is a very good beginners boxing book as Doug Werner guides through all the basic 6 punches (jab, straight, left/right hook, left/right uppercut) and proceeds with countless bag and flow drills in a manner that beginners can easily understand and practice. The scope and detail of this book is SIGNIFICANTLY superior to more popular beginner's book "Boxing: The Complete Guide to Training and Fitness" by Danna Scott. I have bought (and gave away) that book due to its lack of details. The large number of photographs in this book is very well selected and helpful.

A few minor gripes that took away one star for me were: (1) Some editting problems such as minor typos and one incorrect description where the author meant left hand, but wrote right hand (which was quite confusing when comparing to the picture). (2) Be careful of a number of photos showing the fist so over-rotated on straight punches that the thumb actually is pointing straight down! I think he was trying to make the fist more visible, but I think it certainly would add confusing to a beginner. Note that at no point does the text indicate the thumb is to point down toward the ground. (3) The weightlifting exercises could have used a few more pictures as the text was somewhat lacking. However, these minor gripes aside, this is the best mass published beginners book out there that I've found and I've looked through about 10+ books.

...

Fighting Fit
This book is perfect if your looking to enter the sport of boxing, learn some self defence or just get into shape. Easy to to understand and follow, the authors go into detailed description of punches, defense moves, footwork, bag drills, partner drills and sparring drills. The thing that sets this book apart from others though, is all the pictures. Every move or technique described in this book has a picture to go along with it. I have read many boxing techniques and training guides and highly recommend "Fighting Fit" for any amature.

A Good Book
This book is great as a detailed description of boxing technique, both literary and visual. I have recommended this book to people who have technical problems with their style or people who just need to perfect their technique, it covers everything from footwork through to sparring. By far the most detailed do-it-yourself boxing book I've seen to date. Good for beginners. An experienced boxer may find it useful, it's good to read around the subject, but you wont find any advanced discussion, generalship, advanced fight strategy, to the degree that, for instance the Tao of Jeet kune Do, or Ned Beaumont delve into.

I had a good laugh!!!
I bought this book a couple of month ago for my girlfriend(non Swedish). She never read the book, but I did. And I must say I enjoyed every minute of it.
Fun reading, but I don't think you will fully understand how Swedes thinks unless you actually move there... Brrrr...
I do not agree with the statement that Swedes are annoying polite and says 'Thank you' to everything. After living in USA for two years I feel that Swedes are quite rude.
The book felt a little outdated but still the best around.

Former exchange student recommends!
I am 24 year old American male who has previously lived in Sweden for 2 years as an exchange student and has also worked for a Swedish forestry products company. This book is amazingly enlightening! I have to admit that when I first came across it I was somewhat speculative of whole concept. By reading the title you'd almost get the impression that they were talking about interfacing with life from another planet! However, what I found in the book was very well researched and well written -- a fairly accurate portrayal of my experiences and observations of life in Sweden. Highly recommended!

Great insight
My wife was born in Sweden and immigrated with her parents to this country when she was 9 years old. Married 6 years, Lena was continually questioning why she viewed the world in certain ways while others couldn't see things the same way. The insights in this book got her thinking about what was special in her Swedish upbringing and why she was taught to look at some subjects differently. Reward systems, her acceptance of certain conflicts and her questioning mind were revealed to her as a result of reading this book. Since then, I have purchased an additional copy to share with a colleague recently hired by a Swedish company and Lena has given her Dad a copy. A must read for both Swedes and Americans who interact with Swedish people.

It is absolutley the most valuable book to have!
I loved reading this book from a friend that I was compelled to special order it on the same day I read it! I never buy books but this book changed my life. I spread the news about it and now all of my friends have bought the book too. I'll be going to Mexico and will be taking extra copies of Donde No Hay Doctor with me. I plan to distribute them to rural and literate families. I hope this book will be announced more especially within the Hispanic Communties. I can only wish this book is read at least once and that people will see how invaluable it is.

I won't leave home without it!
We just returned from a Hurricane Mitch Medical Relief Team in Honduras. This book was invaluable to the entire team. Comprehensive enough to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments not often encountered in the US, and basic enough to share the info with the patients to aid with education. A must for anyone practicing medicine in Spanish speaking developing countries. We live near the Mexico border and I've ordered one to help me out here!

Good reference
This is about the only reference you need to learn German. The International Phonetic Alphabet, now used in most Oxford dictionaries, helps pronunciation a lot. The grammatical sketch at the back of the book saves you buying a 'Teach Yourself German Grammar' book. The new typeface and layout is very clear. The entries give precise definitions and include many examples in sentences, so that you get a feeling for the word's function. Note though that it is big and heavy, which looks good on a bookshelf but is not very portable.

This is German-English and now German-American.
(...) The name and says it all " Oxford-Druden." This is an indispensable dictionary. Every page has a picture on it with numbers pointing to objects. The opposing page has the numbers pointing to words written in German with their article and English. The English takes a little getting used to (suspenders = braces, elevator = lift, and so on. Can you say exposure control device in German (die Belichtungssteuereinrichtung.) try that without pictures. The dictionary is being continuously updated. However this is the copy that supported me through German Class and I still use it today when navigating Amazon.de

The Best of German-English Dictionaries Currently Available
As a professor of German studies at a college and a reviewer of German-English and English-German books and dictionaries, I can vouch for the finely tuned qualities of this masterful work. With the thoroughness, that Duden is known for and the expertise of the publishing of Oxford, this book has all the new spelling rules, phonetic pronunciation guides, a wonderfully complete guide for German as well as English correspondence, useful phrases, and comprehensive guides for English and German grammar. While the book is heavy, it is for desk and reference work viable and highly recommended. Oxford might have done well to print the book on the new, thinner paper that I have seen modern, rather bulky Books such as the BOOK OF MORMON and the BIBLE printed on. Their thickness has been reduced by almost one half the bulk and thus are easier to place in one's briefcase. For desk and reference work, however, nothing on the market at present can equal it for those reasons I have listed.

Quantum theory is really misterious !!
This really helping me to understand more about the Quantum Theory, I think this book is need to be read by everyone who study physic or by someone who interested by physical theory. I have been read this book for several times and I stil never feel bored. I think this book is really interesting. Thank's

Great book, but beginners beware
This book is excellent--BUT you must have a very keen appreciation of what is happening with the mathematics in order to understand its intensity. If you are just beginning your study of quantum mechanics, I would not recommend this to you unless you just wanted to blur your vision. First, get your tools sharpened with introductory level books and then, maybe, try to tackle this. Its pretty rough, but if you get there it is well worth it.

A classic in quantum mechanics
This book is the standard introduction to - well, to the physical principles underlying the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics. While it is dated in terms of that mathematical formalism, it has never been superseded in its analyses. Every serious student of quantum physics will encounter it, sooner or later, in the original or in paraphrases in newer monographs on quantum theory.

A pleasant, quick way to get your network running.
I managed to add TCP/IP, DHCP, and RAS to a buggy NetBeui Network in just a few days by following the examples in the book. Fell a bit short for me on the theory and advanced topics and I couldn't contact the authors, but it served it's purpose well. Glad I found it.

Very good for teching!
This is a very well done book that has made it much easier for teaching the concepts to new and aspiring administrators.

Extremely well written and illustrated-not overly technical!
This is not a training manual (with chapter quizes, etc.). It is, however, the BEST source I've seen for grasping an understanding of TCP/IP (as in MCSE candidate). It is extremely well written, and the grahic illustrations are a tremendous help to someone like me (I'm a visual learner who easily forgets things that don't have a graphic or other stimulus). Let's face it, when you start talking about a bunch of 1's and 0's running around inside of computer or across a network wire, that's a little hard to relate to without something tangible. I'm studying for MCSE, and I use this as a reference source to clarify voids in my training manuals. This resource has crystalized many things which were just "vapor" until Bisaillon/Werner. Again, the graphics, supplemented by understandable text, is the answer. I'd highly recommend this to any person seeking better understanding of the subject without being overly technical. Finally, I might add, so many of these computer related books/manuals are loaded with typo's, spelling and punctuation errors, poor grammar, and outright mistakes; but NOT this one. I haven't read the book cover-to-cover, but I also haven't noticed any mistakes. That's refreshing! My hat is off to the authors for a such a superb job!
