As a Josef collector I really enjoyed this book!
The book has different figurines than book one. This makes it a must have in addition to the first book! As a collector I have looked through this book hundreds of times and am very glad I purchased it.

The place to start
For those unfamiliar with the writings of the German Thomist Josef Pieper, this is the place to start. Pieper, like his contemporaries von Balthasar and Etienne Gilson, had a wide ranging intellect and an incredibly deep knowledge of philosophy and history. This is evidenced by the topics found among the essays in this volume: semiotics, sexuality, the nature of evil, the supernatual virtues, freedom and predestination, leisure, and true work. While not easy reading by any means, Pieper's writing is filled with the sort of pithy and sharp observations that are so often missing from modern philophical works. A must buy!

The secret behind of the Strauss Family music business.
Wonderful book containing the real reason the Strauss Family was able to success with their Waltz business: The un-questioning resolve of Josef!
The book leaves you wondering how much Josef would have accomplished, how great his music would have become if he had lived longer than his 42 years.

Phenomenal read
This book is wonderfully written, winding the story of a ruthless Nazi killer with survivors who he victimized. It gives a good amount of background such that this monster doesn't just appear out of the blue. It's truly seamless writing that is frankly a good story, even if it were used as a recreational read. Definitely worth buying for those interested in history, and who like a good story.
He covers the "making" of Schwammberger, his crimes, capture, and fascinatingly, his escape to South America. His years of living openly are so strange to those unfamiliar with the stories of groups like Odessa, or Project Paperclip. When entwined with the suffering of Holocaust victims, coming full circle to testify at Schwammberger's trial, offers a very well told account of some of the darkest times in history.

The Mass of the Roman Rite
Published in Hardcover by Christian Classics (1987)
Amazon base price: $25.00

A great work
I first encountered Father Jungmann's Mass of the Roman Rite in the late seventies while attending the Center for Mediaeval Studies, University of Toronto. It was an imposing tome at the time, it still is. Nonetheless, it is a magisterial treatment of the development of the Western liturgical tradition from its beginnings at the Last Supper through the changes which were instituted as a result of the Council of Trent. It is an invaluable source for the process by which the western rite developed. Fr. Jungmann throughout shows amply the variety of liturgical forms that developed in the west (examples from the gallican, mozarabic, sarum, etc.) and the gradual unification into the Roman Rite. Fr. Jungmann approaches his subject with awe and respect and at the same time is a relentless historical critic - this is a very difficult position to maintain. A large part of the value of this book is found in the author's ability to walk that narrow line. This book was influential with the Liturgical Reformers who changed so much after the Vatican Council II (though the changes wrought by the reformers far exceeded spirit and text of Fr. Jungmann's work). The major failing of the book is that its focus is too narrow and does not adequately consider the comparative and shared liturgical background of the Eastern Churches and, indeed, of Judiac liturgical practices. But, this is a quibble compared to the monumental nature of the endeavor that Jungmann undertook and completed.

Charming, delightful, beyond comparison.
I'm assuming this is the book I think it is (don't have my old English copy in front of me), but if it includes the story of a dog named Jim, get it. This amazing story (which also explains how dogs asked God to create Man) is at turns folklike, charming, sweet, and transcendent. Capek is an author who could not be published today: for how could you classify him? Only one way: as himself, Karel Capek.

Wrestles With the Questions That Count
German Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper (1904-1997) discusses with clarity and erudition the issue that grips all of us: what is the basis of our hope on the pilgrimage we call life? He points out that our status is that of people "on the way" who can easily fall into a meaningless existence. He calls us to high virtue. His description of the greatness of spirit of the Christian-- of Christian magnanimity--captures the exciting challenge of going on the pilgrimage of life as a Christian. He points out in this small book how essential hope, as opposed to despair or presumption, is to the Christian life. This book will challenge you to examine the status of your own pilgrimage.
