A strange and exquisite trip
Svorecky's book Headed for the Blues is an excellent, mainly stream-of-conciousness narrative dealing with his experiences as a young boy and man in his homeland. Woven in with this story of a Communist land is a philosophy on life and writing. An excellent book. One of my favorites. And believe me this review does NOT do it justice. I just figured a book as good as this ought to at least have one review here.

Issels : the biography of a doctor

A Journalist Looks at a Medical Controversy
I had been following the pros and cons of Dr. Issels' cancer clinic in German magazines with great interest for years, so when his biography came out, I was the first person in my city to buy it. The British journalist who wrote it, tackled the topic with caution and without any preconceived ideas. He was therefore able to give a fair view or this controversial physician and his clinic, a clinic which had the support of its patients but was harassed by the medical establishment continually.
It has been many years since I read the book, but I remember being impressed with it. Here is the one point which I well remember. The patients at the clinic had almost invariably been given up to die by traditional medicine. Most of them escaped death, but whenever one of them died, because the treatment came too late, the clinic was shut down and prosecuted.

Fascinating study of a neglected masterpiece!
Josef K. Glowa has written a brilliant study worthy of its Rabelaisian theme. Anyone who appreciates satire, be it in the hands of Swift or Groucho, ought to know about Fischart and his amazing satirical pyrotechnics aimed at the reactionary front of the Counter-reformation. Glowa very skillfully displays Fischart's narrative strategies in his major work. His depth of learning in both cultural history and literary theory make him a reliable guide to the intricacies of Fischart's "Geschichtklitterung". And the lively clarity of his writing makes this book a model of the best kind of scholarship--it's actually a great read! Anyone with an interest in literature, the history of ideas, or the exciting and turbulent period of the late Renaissance will enjoy this book.

Woooh!
Who would have thought it? This guy is the undiscovered genius of contemporary stained glass. It looks like he was the first to explore abstraction. That in itself is HUGE. If you are a glass artist, you will love this book. If you are looking for patterns to copy you are WAY in the wrong place.
Josef Muller-Brockmann Designer: A Pioneer of Swiss Graphic Design
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (1996)
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:
this is excellent!
A good introduction to Muller-Brockmanns work, the book takes us from his very early works to later exhibitions and poster design. It even mentions 'Grid Systems', which I am a firm disciple of. Graphic Design is a subject of which to have strong oppionions and Lars Muller has just that. I enjoyed his comments in the preface which were valid and sound. All in all an important walk through past design, which should stay contemparay for times to come.
