A classic, but don't expect just recipes, this is maths
A classic. However this book is not a "cookbook" of numerical recipes, rather it places a strong emphasys in the numerical properties of algorithms. Good all-rounder and good sections on linear systems and interpolation. You'll probably want to complement this book with specialists on matrix computations, ODE, PDE and optimisation.

Quantum Computing

Average review score:

Approachable, up-to-date coverage of a difficult subject
Though probably best used by those with a solid background in mathematics and quantum physics, this book can be useful to the technologically curious due to the fact that the author successfully distills less-than-obvious proofs into meaningful basic concepts. Warning: some of the introductory 'basics' are not. This, however, does not diminish the usefulness of this book.

Rehabilitation of Visual Deficits After Brain Injury
Published in Paperback by Psychology Pr (2001)
Author: Josef Zihl
Amazon base price: $28.95
Average review score:

Internationally recognized research in the field of vision
Visual impairments influence all activities of daily living. Therefore, the examination of vision and the treatment of patients with visual deficits is of major importance, and the book by Josef Zihl closes a big gap in the series of handbooks about neuropsychological rehabilitation. In the last 30 years Prof. Josef Zihl conducted exciting and internationally recognized research in the field of brain damaged patients with visual defects. Many of his investigations were interesting single-case studies which have inspired other scientists to examine larger group of patients. The book summarizes many of his findings and compares them with the results of other researchers. On 186 pages, the author conveys detailed knowledge of the whole range of human visual functions as well as possible disturbances. The book starts with the description of visual field restrictions such as homonymous hemianopia, a frequent consequence of stroke of the posterior cerebral artery. Zihl then deals with disorders of visual acuity, color vision deficits, and impaired visual space perception. Chapter 6 is dedicated to visual agnosia, a very interesting topic in its own. The last part of the book is devoted to central scotoma, causing almost unbearable handicaps for patients. The author presents many helpful compensatory therapies for patients with visual deficits. For example, Zihl himself had developed an electronic reading aid, a saccadic eye movement training, and a computer-based tachistoscopic apparatus for text material. All of them proved their effectivity in several investigations and are helpful for many patients. Particularly for clinical neuropsychologists, these hints are helpful and valuable to decide which test is appropriate for the investigation of a given patient. I think that this book is of interest for both, scientists and clinical practitioners, and we would highly recommend it for anybody working in the field of brain-damaged patients with visual defects.

Sustainability in Politics
The book gives a broad understanding on what is going globally in the field of sustainability. The initiatives declared by the UN are stressed on. The book is suited for decision-makers, because it gives a good advice that is based on statistics. however, it does not go through the details at all. It sets up objectives and action plans, not technical solutions. It is good for city and regional planners.

If you like Milan Kundera...
If you like Milan Kundera check out this author. He speaks of human folly with humor honesty and tenderness. He addresses major human issues with incredible specificity and with a little more sensitivity than Kundera. Enjoy.

A Haunting Lost Chord
"The Terezin Requiem," a surprisingly short novelization of a performance of Verdi's Requiem in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, provides a succinct but devastating image of the power of art even in the sordid horror of the Nazi world. Raphael Schaechter, the conductor, flies elegantly and engagingly by the seat of his pants to assemble and maintain his ensemble, and the many minor characters who move through it are brilliantly and all-too-briefly drawn. The irony of the Catholic Requiem's reinterpretation by doomed Jews is piquantly stated. As a semi-professional singer, I was inspired by the characters' embrace of a classical work as a bridge between real life and the slow dying of the camp. My only complaint was that the book ended too quickly.

The Hebrew vocabulary of the Old Testament
The editor says the the purpose of this dictionary is to analyze the religious statements of the Old Testament with the aid of all accessible resources and the present them in their peculiarity, in order to shed as much light as possible on the connections of the content of Old Testament though in a given text, tradition, or institution. To accomplish this goal 39 international Old Testament scholars have written articles on 53 Hebrew words found in the Old Testament, ranging from the word for "father" to that for "alone." There are articles on "light, "man," "God," "land," among others. While the words are arranged according to their Hebrew form, all Hebrew words are transliterated. This is the first of several volumes translated from the German original.

The Young Lawyer's Jungle Book: A Survival Guide
Published in Paperback by The Fine Print Pr Ltd (1996)
Author: Thane Josef Messinger
Amazon base price: $18.95
Used price: $15.87
Average review score:

An ugly description of lawyers and law practice.
Mr. Messinger's book proposes that first-year associates can get ahead in the law business by looking right, talking right, and by playing duplicitous games of masks and daggers with their employers and coworkers. In defense of his advice, the author says that he's just describing the world as it is and not as it should be. Aside from the pervasive amoral attitude, the book is not all bad; the author is intelligent, and his generous advice about the basics of legal research, writing, and client relationships is sound. But his foul calculus of manipulation strikes me as a con. In effect, the author excuses the misery of associate life by saying, "Suffer, sublimate your soul, and do what you can to make partner. After that, the money will make up for your lost youth, and you can buy back whatever joy you gave up."

As a matter of fact, the author's own life refutes the theme of his book. Mr. Messinger experienced life as an associate at a respected Honolulu law firm first-hand, and is admittedly well-qualified to write about that world. But his reaction to the practice of pinstripe law was to move to a remote tropical island where he lived a decidedly more relaxed life than the one he advocates in his book.

An excellent book, loaded with good information.
I have found this to be an excellent book on the practice of law. After nearly two years in a medium-sized, boutique law firm, I think the situations and advice of the author are on-point. The book is a bit unconventional, but after a few chapters, I found it well-written and really funny, which makes it a lot easier to digest. I recommend this book to all new lawyers. It has information you won't find anywhere else - including stuff nobody ever mentioned to me - and you might pay a hundred bucks to duplicate it, if you could find a "Senior" lawyer who cared enough to tell you everything written in the book. Five stars - a definite "buy."

Absolutely the best book available for new lawyers!
I strongly disagree with the comments in the San Antonio review. This book is even MORE valuable for those who will NOT be in big firms. I work in a smaller law office, and the scenarios in the Young Lawyer's Jungle Book could have been taken from a fly on the wall. I see some of the same mistakes described in the book being made all around me. I've caught myself more than a few times before I was about to make a mistake in public. This book is an absolute MUST for EVERY new lawyer. It has advice that applies to small-firm lawyers (and government and public-interest lawyers too) as well as for those in big firms. Indeed, I showed this book to friends, some are in big firms and some in other types of law offices, and they ALL really, really liked it. (Give me my book back, Peter!) I also disagree on the comment about the author's writing style. I kept picking it up and re-reading it, when someone wasn't asking to borrow it. (Don't leave it in your office!) The book is both funny and profound. It's sad that something hilarious is assumed to be inconsequential. Nothing could be further from the truth with this book. Yes, there were parts that I didn't get at first, but on the whole the Young Lawyer's Jungle book manages, sometimes in a single sentence, to make me laugh and to make me think about serious aspects of law practice and professional life, sometimes long after I've read it. I also read Proceed With Caution. It does present a picture of big-firm life (which is not really that much different from better smaller firms, because many firms, like mine, are started by lawyers who were partners in large firms). But Proceed with Caution is not really an advice guide, it's more like a diary. And it's not really in the same league as the Young Lawyer's Jungle Book. This book earns its five stars. If you're not yet finished with college, still in law school, or just started working as a lawyer, ANY type of lawyer, you absolutely, positively MUST read this book.

Another Roosevelt book, and Truman too
This reviewer has read many books about Franklin Roosevelt, but not many recently because they are too repetitious. What did I find out here that I didn't read before?- Roosevelt's last evening on earth seemed to be somewhat pleasant. Although he looked tired, after a drink he spoke with animation about his forthcoming trip to the San Francisco United Nations Conference. The following afternoon, April 12th, his next to last words were "I have a terrific pain in the back of my head." His last words as he was carried to his room were "Be careful." A statement on page 51 about the religions could be interpreted as biased or prejudiced. However, he appointed men of all major religions to high office. So in this case actions spoke louder than words.

Michael Beschloss at his best!
As a presidential historian who regularly makes appearances on PBS and other network television, Michael Beschloss is certainly qualified to offer his perspective on the presidencies of FDR and Harry Truman. "The Conquerors" is easily readable as scholarly works go and the author has definitely established his research. The difficult dilemma of what to do with defeated Nazi Germany is discussed from the view of the decision makers. How did the two presidents arrive at their final conclusions? The book brings out the many factors that entered into the post-war policy making process, including the fear of another future war and the re-emergence of Nazi ideology. The book makes use of a plethora of primary sources, among them letters and correspondence that I believe are unveiled for the first time in this book. Readers are met with a deluge of information on Henry Morgenthau who played prominent role in the process. In summary, this is a highly intriguing read, not in the same league as "John Adams", but well worth the time and effort. Check it out.

Great reading, explores WWII History in a wonderful way
Michael Beschloss, in his new book The Conquerors, tells the tale of Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and their roles in the defeat of Hitler's Germany during World War II.

The book focuses on the period 1941-1945, and Beschloss' writing style makes for easily understood reading. Although the book seems to spend a tremendous amount of time discussing Henry Morgenthau (Roosevelt's Secretary of the Treasury), this is easily understood as the plot unfolds.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to everyone interested in the political history of the World War II era. I feel that the only drawback to the book is that there is an entire chapter devoted to post wartime activities in Germany. In my opinion, this chapter is unnecessary, since neither Roosevelt nor Truman was strongly involved in the daily operations in Germany after the war ended.
