Missing extremely important information
I am a clinical professor in a school of pharmacy and am admittedly biased toward traditional "western" medicine. However, any objective person would have to agree that there are major "gaps" in the information this book provides. In the section on St. John's wort, this book states that there are no known contraindications or drug interactions with St. John's wort. There are in fact serious drug interactions with this product, including anti-rejection drugs (resulting in at least one case of organ rejection in a renal transplant patient) and potentially fatal interactions with other anti-depressants (most importantly MAOIs). This book has extensive information on historical use of herbs, pharmacology and uses... but lacks important safety information. No clinician should use this book as his/her sole source of information on herbal products.

A reference book no professional herbalist can be without
As an avid reader (and writer) of books on herbal medicine, I have to say that Blumenthal, Goldberg, and Brinckmann's Herbal Medicine is simply the most authoritative reference for the use of Western herbs on the market today. Herbal Medicine--Expanded Commission E Monographs augments the "gold standard" of scientifically oriented herbal therapy, the Commission E Monographs, with histories, in-depth and comprehensive discussions of scientific research, color photos, and practical recommendations for the use of herbs in therapy, some of which are to be found in no other book. While the tone of the book is academic and the scientific complexity of the subject matter may scare away some potential readers, anyone who uses any of the herbs most commonly available in the USA today can profit by referring to this book.

A core reference for traditional and alternative medicine.
Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs is an alphabetically presented dictionary of herbal plants and their known medicinal properties. Illustrated in color throughout, each herb is provided with its basic descriptive information including both popular and botanical name, and it's own bibliography for those seeking further and even more detailed information on medical applications. Herbal Medicine is a core volume for any serious personal or professional, mainstream or alternative, medical resource collection.

Good Lesson, For Some
I think this book teaches some valuable lessons about hate and revenge, but these lessons are lost on younger children (under 6 or so). My 3-year-old's preschool teacher read this book to him, and all he retained was the image of a wolf that can bite another creature to death and a little boy, like himself, who is not big enough to kill the wolf. Be sure of your audience before sharing this story with younger children.

A warm and wonderful story of forgiveness and love
I have used the story of ATUK in pre-k and kdg. classes. It is full of imagery and warmth. The story tells, through the experiences of an Inuit boy, about forgiveness and appreciation of life. I strongly recommend it for the high interest, the lovely prose, and the amazing artwork.

Colorful Writing for a Monochrome Book
Often times, in the art world, pedantry and an overwrought sense of aesthetics make anything written on the subject unbearable for all but the snobbiest. Fortunately for the rest of rest, Mr. Hodin wrote this book. He is an engaging, lucid writer who has studied his subject thoroughly and actually knew Edvard Munch in his later years which enables him to offer a good deal of important personal information that other authors are simply not able to do. This additional insight is important, for Edvard Munch is one of the truly original geniuses of art and his work carries an urgent message for the dissociated psyche of modern man. My only complaint with this volume is that the publisher elected to print only about one third of the prints in color which, while unfortunate, is by no means devastating. If youre interested in this greatest of expressionists and interested in delving into the spiritual crisis of modern man, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. On the other hand, if youre an elitist art critic looking for stodgy literature, look elsewhere this is not your book.

Discover the world of Edvard Munch
An excellent and scholarly work covering all of Munch's work. Over 160 plates are discussed in depth and there are cross references to the wherabouts of each of the plates at the end of the book. The major fault is the lack of colour plates (30), and the relativly poor quality of the reproductions but all in all a valuable and comprehensive work.

Thematic Approach helps you master one thing at a time
This book is very helpful. I read it before studying marketing for a year in Mexico. It helped me get a grasp on the vocabulary in my classes.

Later I was offered a job because I spoke Spanish and knew about business. This book helped forge the foundation of an international business career.

Currently I manage an import/export business in Monterrey, Mexico. This book has been extremely helpful.

I highly reccomended this book to a professor at the University of Tennessee for required reading use in his classes. (Spanish for Business)

Very Helpful
This book has proven very benificial to me. I am in the process of moving to South America with my employer. I am a Human Resource Manager and this book has helped me greatly with my spanish buisness vocabulary. Another book that I have found to be even more indispensable for me and a definite "5" star is the book "Spanish for Human Resources Managers."

...Yes, they are
One of the beautiful books I have ever read. A marvulos combination of Godel, Esher,Bach & The emperor new mind. Deals with issues of logic, science & the history of science. It could be perfect (to my taste...), if it had more chapters on Godelian metters. In a single word: "worth it"!

Southern History Through Folk Art
I asked for a book on Old South history or folk art for Christmas, and my mom picked up Deep Blues: Bill Traylor 1854-1949. What a book! I get lost in the work of Traylor -- the king of folk art (sorry Mose T). And the photographs of Montgomery in the early 1900s tell a great story. This book moved me in so many ways, I hope it does for you as well.

The emperor & the actress : the love story of Emperor Franz Josef & Katharina Schratt

Interesting Love Story
After reading a book about Empress Elisabeth of Austria, I noted in the bibliography a book about her husband Emperor Franz Joseph and his long term paramour, Katharina Schratt. Because of the mental problems experienced by his wife, his relationship with her left the Emperor deeply unsatisified. He was able to find love with an Austrian actress. The emperor was in his 50's and the actress in her 30's and their romance lasted for the rest of their lives.

Author Haslip does an excellent job of describing the times in Vienna during the later half of the 19th century. The affair is touching in that it was carried on discreetly but left both participants with some measure of personal happiness. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this time period and the personal lives of various historical figures.

Sternberg on life, the movies, and Dietrich.
Full of cynical, razor-sharp and often very funny opinions. It's so one-sided, however, that I came away very curious to read what Dietrich herself thought about their relationship-- preferably in her own words.

Sternberg was definitely quite a character, and his autobiography is vastly entertaining.

Nice compact travel guide for use when visiting Beijing
I found this book quite good for general info about places to visit in Beijing. Beijing a little over 1/2 inch thick, it is quite thin. It primarily lists the 10 main sites to visit in Beijing. For each spot it lists quite a bit of info, history, pictures, operating hours, etc. It also lists what is nearby to visit each of the 10 sites, whether it be shopping centers or resturaunts.

In addition to the 10 major scenic sites, it also has a section called 'excursions' for detailing where to go outside of Beijing for nearby excursions, such as, the great wall, ming tombs, chengde, etc. It also has sections for resturaunts, nightlife, shopping, leisure activities, history, general everyday use info, getting around etc.

Overall, it is a good bare-bones book for use when going to Beijing. It is not as thorough as other guidebooks for example, Fodors china. But considering the small size of the book, it obviously can't go into tremendous detail about such a large and exciting city!
