Grid Systems in Graphic Design>>Timeless
Josef Muller-Brockmann has established an iron clad undergirding for graphic designers to base all of their layouts on. With the explosion of web-design and multimedia advertising also came a proliferation of poorly designed projects. Visual communication in any media should be planned to instill confidence in the viewer and should speak to anyone in any cultural or status.

This text provides this foundation. I placed my order for this text some months ago and I was jumping around like a kid at Christmas when it arrived. The book itself is a pleasure to hold and is rich in quality and quantity. There is no other graphic design foundation like it.

I recommend this text to the experienced and novice designer alike. In communications graphics it is essential that a design be based upon an objective process that centers on functionality and a logical progression of reasoning. Many designer embark on a project with no rational justification for what they are doing..only that what they are doing looks good to them. Such uninformed progress often leads to a composition that is incongruent and cannot provide the visual stability and functionality that must be foundation of any graphical piece whether it is in print or web.

This text is a treasure and surely worth it's weight in gold.

A Modern Classic!
What a wonderful story filled with warm memories of a time past. It will remain a favorite on my bookshelf. However, the temptation is to pass it on to others to enjoy. Not only does the author display great sensitivity in his story telling but he also has the unique ability to take the reader on the journey with him. I hope this is just the beginning for this author. By the way, the sketches done by his daughter that are peppered throughout the book are delightful.

Insightful of father/son relationships
This very touching and insightful account of a boys' youthful memories touched many sensitive cords. Although the boys' relationship was bad with his Dad he had a wonderful relationship with his Grandfather. It reminded me so much of my own Childhood, growing up in Dryden (Gee Hill) area and going to school in Marathon, NY. I didn't know any of these people but feel like I know them now and knew many others just like them from the area. I thourghly enjoyed this book

Excellent Philosophy Intro and Pieper stepping stone
A good introduction and jumping off point to Pieper's philosophy and philosophy in general. Reading this book first might make his other works (like Virtues of the Human Heart, Abuse of Language Abuse of Power, and Leisure the Basis of Culture) more palitable. Pieper, here, describes what philosophy is - its likeness to poetry; why it should be done - freedom can not exist without it; and where philosophy stands in relationship to the exact sciences and religion. Pieper, with great detail, also lays Sartre flat, and critisizes Jaspers and Heidegger to the degree that they fail to recognize their own religiosity and how this contridicts their views of what a philosopher is -- throwing their own words in thier face, so to speak. Great reading.

This book might read something like a simple methodology; much more comprensible than "Living the Truth" which is quite a book, a definite methodology, but difficult reading.

A must for any student of philosophy.
In this excellent little book (120 pages), Josef Pieper shows why philosophy is essential to human life. Pieper states his thesis at the beginning of the book: "to engage in philosophy means to reflect on the totality of things we encounter, in view of their ultimate reasons; and philosophy, thus understood, is a meaningful, even necessary endeavor, with which man, the spiritual being, cannot dispense." Pieper concludes this chapter by responding to four objections to the thesis: (1) it answering a philosophical question even possible? (2) what does it really mean to encounter something? (3) what about modern sciences? (4) what good is philosophy since it doesn't have a practical end?

In the rest of the book, Pieper shows how the ability to philosophize is different from studying philosophy in a classroom. He shows how philosophy is related to art and to religion. He then discusses the axiom: "philosophy alone is free," and how philosophy is a loving meditation on truth.

In the final chapters, Pieper enters into discussion with modern philosophers (e.g., Heidegger and Jaspers) who affirm that a religious believer cannot be a philosophy and shows the errors of this view in light of the ancient concept of philosophy found in Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas.

Josef Originals were figurines from my childhood and are a wonderful collectable to pass down through generations. This well illustrated book will delight any Josef collector. It begins with a short written history and jumps into many pages of clear pictures. Each page is a delight to view. This guide has a price listing in the back. Collect all three "Josef" books by the Authors Jim & K Whitaker. These books are indeed collectibles in themselves.

Shows the way and reasons of Pieper's use of philosophy,
This book reads much more like a methodology of how Pieper uses philosophy, and his justifications for his usage, than any of the previous books of his I have read. Pieper defines how modern thought has corrupted much of our vocabulary - in comparison with the Medieaval use - of such words as: truth, reality, knowledge, perception, idea, essence, object, subject, imagine, potential capacity, natural, ideal, cognition, will. He also makes an effort to clear the name of Aquinas, from past abusers of his ideas, Aquinas being the primary philosopher Pieper draws his ideas from. Pieper largely defends Medieaval thought against the Modern. The Modern insignificantly began with Montaigne, significantly started with Decarte, and became rock solid with Kant (each with their legions of followers). Pieper is a defense of what there was before. How what is good in the Western Tradition fundamentaly lays there. The book's points are profound; at their essence the most profound of all of Pieper's books I have read thus far. However, they are also the most abstract and possibly the least accessable to the common reader, such as myself.

Many of Pieper's books read much more as a guide to living a better life, this is not one of them. Abuse of Language Abuse of Power is, as are Leisure the Basis of Culture and The Virtues of the Human Heart - and many of his other books I have not read as of yet. These books are accesible and ones, I believe, that will result in a reader making postive life changes significantly altering one's view of the world for the better, for themselves and their brothers.

Knowledge and Unity
Living the Truth is probably the best of Pieper's books. It offers the finest insights into Medieval epistemology available, illuminating philosophy from Plato to Aquinas in a remarkable way. The second part of the book, building on the first, gives completely fesh insights into the basis of moral action, grounded in the knowledge of essences. Perhaps the most significant thing about the book is that it shows what has been lost in Western philosophy since the Enlightenment, where the concern changed from knowledge of essence to empiricism.

As usual with Pieper, the book is written with consumate clarity.

Really great book
This is really a great introductory book for learning mechanics of materials. Each phenomena is dealt with from an energy point of view. This allows of suitable simplications of phenomenologically complicated processes, and presents a comprehensive framework for dealing with a large range of processes. The book can be essentially divided into two parts. The first part introduces the reader to the mechanics fundamentals and the mathematical tools. The second part deals with the application of the tools to develop elasticity and plasticty models. The analysis is consistent throughout, and very lucid. A really great book !

Best Mechanis Book Ever!
I found this book simply beautiful.
Every subjects are discussed in a truly comprehensive manner, and yet the flow of ideas is retained throughout the chapters. The books shows how exactly each theorem and principle is derived, and the arguments are always based on solid physical terms - a quality that other mechanics books don't always possess.
Might be too tough for undergrads, but very nice for graduate levels.

This edition is in German!
A friend who recommended this book highly says it's absolutely a "must read" for anyone interested in Germany, so I ordered it from Amazon. I'm trusting his judgment because I won't be able to discover this myself. This edition is in German, a language I don't read--and something the Amazon page does not mention.

Fast paced with a very important background
Josef Haslinger, an Austrian author centering around brutal(especially Nazi) ideology and how it can happen that people make the same mistakes over and over again. The story is about a disastrous terror attack on the Vienna Opernball in a fictious, yet likely setup and how a middle aged star journalist discovers the irritating background where religious ambition and extreme right-wing mentality marry to an unholy cocktail. The best thing are the exceptionally well described characters. You are never to tell if the one who is interviewed is "good" or "bad" as in so many novels. If You are interested in a fast paced, interesting book with a political and social awareness that is seldomly found, You have found a book which You can't put away till You read it from first to last page

Search for a New Humanity: A Dialogue Between Josef Derbolav and Daisaku Ikeda

A Bridge Between Asian and European Cultures
This work is a discussion on topics including religion, education, ethics, humanism and Buddhism/Christianity. Through the dialogue, SGI President Ikeda and Derbolav, professor of education and philosophy at the University of Bonn, offer a bridge between Asian and European cultures.

Contemporary Issues, Buddhist Wisdom, Greek Philosophy
This book deals with a variety of contemporary problems in the form of a dialogue between Daisaku Ikeda, president of Soka Gakkai International, the world's largest Buddhist organization, and the late Josef Derbolav (1912-87), then professor emeritus of the University of Bonn and a world-renowned authority on pedagogy and Greek philosophy.

Together they explore a wide range of topics, starting with a discussion of the tension between tradition and modernization in Japan and elsewhere. They compare humanism in East and West, and Buddhism and Christianity.

Focusing on the crucial topic of education, they consider the roles of ethics and religion. They conclude their dialogue by "searching" for a new humanity that can face and conquer the daunting problems we have created in our century, especially overpopulation and destruction of the natural environment.

By selecting the word "search" for their title, the authors consciously stress the dialectic approach, whether it be that of Plato searching for the ideal, Augustine for God, or the bodhisattva of the Buddhist tradition searching for perfect enlightenment. This search for the future is to be based on substantial expertise, the strongest sense of responsibility and the highest degree of self-control.

Therefore, they state, "it is necessary to remember that attaining a new form of humanity entails an inner revolution - a radical alteration of our way of thinking - that will free us from prominent egoistic, commercial, and ideological motivations and at the same time liberate us to the deep and genuine claims of Eastern and Western cultural traditions and such of their treasures as Buddhism and Christianity."

The discussion began in May 1981 when Ikeda visited West Germany and continued in 1982 in Tokyo and then again in 1983 in Bonn. During the intervals, they sustained their dialogue through regular correspondence, clarifying and elaborating their views.

Where in the Hell is Sourdough, Alaska

No electricity, No running water, but lots of fun.
This is an excellent book that shows how 'real Alaaskans' lived. All of the stories in the book are told from the perspective of the author when he was a child. We find out what he did with his brothers to pass the time when they lived in the middle of nowhere.

This book is filled with vivid and humerous detail in every story. You will die laughing as he talks about the outhouse, how he fought it, and how it defeated him. You will also laugh at their Christmas traditions, but will also want to adapt them for yourselves as well. Even in a tragic story about a fire, he finds a moment of humor.

And for those who love animal tales, he dedicates a story to each of the three dogs that he remembers, as well as a truly uniqe story of a purple parakeet. Each story he captures their essence so well that you feel like you knew that pet.

If you love stories about Alaska life, you'll love it. If you love to laugh, you'll want to read this. If you love stories about kids antics and thought processes, you'll love this book. If you like Dave Barry, you'll probably like this as well...

A good book to read out loud.
My daughter and I enjoyed reading this book last summer. I read it out loud to her as she was recovering from mono. The stories were unique and kept us intrigued. After each story, I would ask her if she wanted another, and the answer was always "yes". The stories revolved around episodes in the lives of five brothers who were raised in a house without water and electricity. This setting, and the outrageous antics of the boys, provided visual images that I never could have dreamed of! I recommend this book to those who want an "up close and personal" account of an active family living in a remote part of Alaska. I promise you that you have never read anything quite like this.
