This book might read something like a simple methodology; much more comprensible than "Living the Truth" which is quite a book, a definite methodology, but difficult reading.
In the rest of the book, Pieper shows how the ability to philosophize is different from studying philosophy in a classroom. He shows how philosophy is related to art and to religion. He then discusses the axiom: "philosophy alone is free," and how philosophy is a loving meditation on truth.
In the final chapters, Pieper enters into discussion with modern philosophers (e.g., Heidegger and Jaspers) who affirm that a religious believer cannot be a philosophy and shows the errors of this view in light of the ancient concept of philosophy found in Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas.

Many of Pieper's books read much more as a guide to living a better life, this is not one of them. Abuse of Language Abuse of Power is, as are Leisure the Basis of Culture and The Virtues of the Human Heart - and many of his other books I have not read as of yet. These books are accesible and ones, I believe, that will result in a reader making postive life changes significantly altering one's view of the world for the better, for themselves and their brothers.
As usual with Pieper, the book is written with consumate clarity.

Every subjects are discussed in a truly comprehensive manner, and yet the flow of ideas is retained throughout the chapters. The books shows how exactly each theorem and principle is derived, and the arguments are always based on solid physical terms - a quality that other mechanics books don't always possess.
Might be too tough for undergrads, but very nice for graduate levels.

Together they explore a wide range of topics, starting with a discussion of the tension between tradition and modernization in Japan and elsewhere. They compare humanism in East and West, and Buddhism and Christianity.
Focusing on the crucial topic of education, they consider the roles of ethics and religion. They conclude their dialogue by "searching" for a new humanity that can face and conquer the daunting problems we have created in our century, especially overpopulation and destruction of the natural environment.
By selecting the word "search" for their title, the authors consciously stress the dialectic approach, whether it be that of Plato searching for the ideal, Augustine for God, or the bodhisattva of the Buddhist tradition searching for perfect enlightenment. This search for the future is to be based on substantial expertise, the strongest sense of responsibility and the highest degree of self-control.
Therefore, they state, "it is necessary to remember that attaining a new form of humanity entails an inner revolution - a radical alteration of our way of thinking - that will free us from prominent egoistic, commercial, and ideological motivations and at the same time liberate us to the deep and genuine claims of Eastern and Western cultural traditions and such of their treasures as Buddhism and Christianity."
The discussion began in May 1981 when Ikeda visited West Germany and continued in 1982 in Tokyo and then again in 1983 in Bonn. During the intervals, they sustained their dialogue through regular correspondence, clarifying and elaborating their views.
This book is filled with vivid and humerous detail in every story. You will die laughing as he talks about the outhouse, how he fought it, and how it defeated him. You will also laugh at their Christmas traditions, but will also want to adapt them for yourselves as well. Even in a tragic story about a fire, he finds a moment of humor.
And for those who love animal tales, he dedicates a story to each of the three dogs that he remembers, as well as a truly uniqe story of a purple parakeet. Each story he captures their essence so well that you feel like you knew that pet.
If you love stories about Alaska life, you'll love it. If you love to laugh, you'll want to read this. If you love stories about kids antics and thought processes, you'll love this book. If you like Dave Barry, you'll probably like this as well...
This text provides this foundation. I placed my order for this text some months ago and I was jumping around like a kid at Christmas when it arrived. The book itself is a pleasure to hold and is rich in quality and quantity. There is no other graphic design foundation like it.
I recommend this text to the experienced and novice designer alike. In communications graphics it is essential that a design be based upon an objective process that centers on functionality and a logical progression of reasoning. Many designer embark on a project with no rational justification for what they are doing..only that what they are doing looks good to them. Such uninformed progress often leads to a composition that is incongruent and cannot provide the visual stability and functionality that must be foundation of any graphical piece whether it is in print or web.
This text is a treasure and surely worth it's weight in gold.
