Highly recommended for death penalty opponents
Herbert Haines explores the history of the death penalty abolitionist movement in the United States. He discusses the various strategies and beliefs that have been behind the movement since its inception in this country. After presenting the movement in this historical context, Haines makes sound recommendations for the future of the movement. A very practical and wonderful work.

Fighting for the Freedom of Religion
One of the best accounts of failed attempts by the government to restrict religious freedom in a country where it is supposed to be a birthright. The Worldwide Church of God, a Christian Church situated in Pasadena, California, is attacked by the state and put under a receivership based on the claims of ex-members. What follows is the inspiring true story of the ambitions of the then-attorney general of arguably the most powerful state in the union to regulate Church property and thus unavoidably Church activities, and the worldwide membership of this Church which fights against it. If you are interested in the historic struggle of Religion to survive in the face of government opposition, then this book is for you. It is inspiring, not only for members of the WCG, but for Churches nationwide (worldwide even) as even those religious organizations opposed to the Worldwide Church of God stand up for religious freedom... fighting against what some feel is the most calculated attack ever made.

I guess my comments might be taken as somewhat skewed, as I am a proud member of the Worldwide Church of God, but I can honestly say that the story would inspire me REGARDLESS of the Church it came from. Its a must-read for those who feel the tightening grip of the government over our historic right to believe and worship God as our consciences require

An Excellent Glimpse into the Life of a Fascinating Man
Herbert Lottman is the most loving and I believe the most authoritative of all students of Albert Camus. This short book is a treasure for anyone who cares about Camus' literature. If you are serious about Camus, you should read this book as well as Lottman's excellent biography of Camus, which was the groundbreaking work in all Camus scholarship and remains the best Camus biography.

Lottman's work on Camus has not been as well received as one might hope, and that is a great shame. Ironically, I think his reception by Camus scholars mirrors the incivility which the French elite reserved for Camus himself. I think the treatment both men received from the literati is explained by the fact that they are both outsiders. Neither man was a French native (Camus was an Algerian of French-Spanish descent and Lottman is an American expatriate living in Paris) and neither was a professional academic (Camus was a newspaper editor, a novelist, and a man of the theater, while Lottman is a journalist). It seems that the elite are simply never willing to admit any reason to listen to an outsider, no matter how worthy that person might be. That is so at least in retrospect, anyway; I think that as time passes the elite will recognize Lottman's greatness, just as, with time, they recognized the greatness of Camus.

Anyway, this book is a touching, very readable glimpse into the life of a fascinating man, by an author who himself clearly loves Camus and has taken great pains to paint him truthfully.

Bible Study tool that reads like a devotional
I am a fan of the late Dr. Herbert Lockyer's books. All the Divine Names and Titles in the Bible happens to be the one I most refer to when studying or preparing a talk. He has done the intial, exhaustive research of listing all the names of the Trinty and giving scriptural references for each as well as a giving commentary on them. Though, I tend to stay away from commentaries, I find Lockyer's to be very straightforward with scripture and exceptionally praise-worthy.

A Comprehensive Text that Needs to be Republished
How in the world could such a book be out of print? Does it reflect the mentality of Christians today, that they are more focused on themselves than on God? The publisher probably wouldn't take this book out of print unless people just weren't buying it. Well, people need to read this book. It is a hidden classic, part of a series Herbert Lockyer produced on the Bible. The names and titles (and attributes) of God are the very foundation and purpose of the revelation of the Bible. This book is comprehensive and an excellent resource for critical Bible study concerning the Person of God. Such a book would help restore the theocentric and Christocentric thinking and living that is so absolutely critical for correct Bible interpretation and Biblical obedience.

Clear and convenient
This is the best guide to New York for someone who wants info at their fingertips -- it is clear, well-organized, comprehensive and yet it is truly pocket sized. About 3 in by 7 in, or theirabouts. (which means the type is small, but it is very readable if your vision is good or corrected.) I just wish (HEAR THIS AM EX???) they would publish an updated version! My copy is from 1986 and although the museum and sites info is much the same, the restaurants, hotel and shopping sections are in dire need of new information.
