George Herbert the Temple: A Diplomatic Edition of the Bodleian Manuscript (Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies, Vol 54)
Published in Hardcover by Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies (1995)
Authors: George Herbert and Mario Di Cesare
Amazon base price: $18.00

Perhaps authoritative
Di Cesare makes a relatively persuasive argument that this Bodleian manuscript is more authoritative than a widely accepted first printed edition of 1635. The manuscript is not Herbert's, so it is a live argument as to which represents his most specific intentions. I don't know which is closer to what Herbert had in mind, but the extraordinarily painstaking reproduction of such elements as the relative size of letters is appreciated.

This is the editor's description; ignore 5-star rating.
Mario A. Di Cesare writes: The Bodleian manuscript of George Herbert's wonderful set of poems called The Temple is a beautiful work made with loving care at Little Gidding in the months after Herbert's death in 1633. It is also the most important manuscript of Herbert's poetry.

This volume presents an exact transcription of the manuscript, page by page, rendering precisely or recording not just the spelling and punctuation (including the placement of punctuation), but also the visual layout, the special characters (size, position, emphasis), the corrections and insertions, and the graphic characteristics of the page: Computer typography allowed me to imitate the original pages closely. (Lots of facsimile pages are also included.) My three-part introduction shows why contact with original manuscripts is important, argue the primacy of this manuscript for Herbert's text, and give critical readings of the poems themselves.

I am happy to report that my book has been widely praised by reviewers and called indispensable for anyone seriously interested in Herbert's poetry.

A simply masterful presentation of Seurat's work
This beautiful catalog from an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992 is an excellent anthology of Seurat's work, juxtaposing finished works with sketches, and includes a large selection of sketches as a student. The size allows the works to be displayed in all their glory. If you like Seurat, buy this!

Fantastic
I felt that this book is the best overall catalog of the work of Stuart Davis. It includes an enormous amount of color and black and white pictures of his paintings and of himself. It also includes a good synopsis of his life and extrordinary career. If you need a book on Stuart Davis than this is the best.

Required reading for attorneys and law schools
Every attorney, and certainly every person going to law school, or thinking about it, should read this book. There is no other author that provides such a clear understanding of the basis of our laws in such an easy-to-read style (something woefully lacking in most academic writing and textbooks), or who so eloquently addresses the philosophical conformity that has become prevalent in American law schools and our legal system. Before you buy another law book, read this one!

Must read for any lawyer!
This book spells out the basis for Anglo-American law from a Christian perspective. It illuminates historical events and legal precedents in very un-politically correct ways. Titus presents a unique view on the law that few have explored.

think, smile, digest
I first read this book in 1980. It was a gift from my best and wisest friend, the hardcover version which I still treasure to this day. I have since probably bought half a dozen copies of this for the distinct reason that I felt someone merited a copy as a gift. This book makes you stop and think about yourself, your life and your expectations. It does not criticize your path nor does it necessarily offer an alternative. It just makes you think....... in an easy, enjoyable manner. This book won't give you the "secret" to a fulfilling life of health, wealth or whatever else you seek, but it will make you think...... and every now and then you may actually catch yourself smiling as you do so. Recommended, highly - but more so, fondly remembered 20 years, university, failed and successful career prospects, failed and successful romantic prospects later. Yes so ever fondly remembered.

Platonic Narrativity to Explore the Philosophy of Games
Suits' claim that he is not furthering the extensive work done in the field of game theory is correct, but i feel he underestimates his contribution to our understanding of the importance of liesure activities in our lives. i am not so interested in the mathematical proofs provided by Von Nueman and Morgenstern, and how game theory is applicable to life, as i am in discovering why i have such a fascination with games. Suits' Grasshopper, via a Platonic dialogue, examines the nature of the game, what it is, why it is employed, etc. This already effective narrative structure is further enhanced by the Grasshopper's many digressions and introductions of hypothetical characters and situations. Suits has created a meta-fictional forum for both discharging his ideas and entertaining the reader. i found myself compelled forward, relishing every word, and fascinated by Suits' logic process and conclusions. i recommend this title to anyone interested in a hybrid of game theory and actual game play; the book does not reduce games to a mathematical model but it also avoids describing any one game in particular. Rather Suits seems interested in analyzing the structure and nature of games as a whole. It is a philosophical outlook on a very intriguing subject.

Guide to Biblical Coins

A must for those interested in biblical coins
I have been a collector of biblical coins for more than a decade, and Hendin's writings have been a tremendous help. I enjoy his insights, stories, and overall knowledge. The illustrations of the coins are wonderful, and the pictures in the back of the book are of top quality. I believe Hendin is the foremost expert in the world today when it comes to the coins of the Bible. Of course, these books are a bit pricy. I own the 1st and 3rd editions, but I've held off on the 4th just because I think I'll keep the pattern going and wait for the 5th ed. (2004 perhaps???). But if you own nothing, this edition is better than none. I highly recommend it, either as a resource manual or a book to read from cover to cover.

Interesting for everyone, essential for collectors.
For collectors of ancient coins, especially those of Biblical or Judaean coins, this work is essential. Now in its 3rd ed., Hendin has re-cataloged and listed coins that were in use from the time of Alexander The Great, through the first and second revolts, and to the city-statesunder Rome. The coins are not only described ingreat detail, but their HISTORY is clearly laid out so that it comes to life. Reading about them, even if one can't collect them, takes you back tothe time of ancient Greece and Rome. Biblical stories are set in context and become all the morereal.

An Invaluable Birding Guide in Puerto Rico
An extremely well-written and well-illustrated book with especially helpful and detailed text on habitat, behavior, and locales. On a recent trip to Puerto Rico for birding, we found this book to be extraordinarily helpful. Since we have come home to the Continental USA, it continues to be rich reading.

The best field guide available of the birds on Puerto Rico.
As a professional Puerto Rican biologist and bird watcher I found this book to be the best field guide of birds occuring at Puerto Rico. It covers as well, introduced, migratory, and endemic or native species with a full description of each bird characteristics and accompanying color plates that match the birds color patterns up to the last feather. It is a must have to any bird enthusiast living or visiting the Island, as well as for students or professional biologists.

The Heart of God: Prayers of Rabindranath Tagore
In prayers and poems of depth and simplicity,Tagore expresses his very soul...which is somehow the soul of each of us.

Obviously a spiritual master, he speaks for each of our hearts with a depth of compassion and honesty that embraces universal and timeless themes. Human struggle, delight, quest, hope, trust, joy, despair, and peace are expressed in a compelling commitment to Love which draws him only into deeper intimacy with the Beloved.

Tagore puts into words a love which surpasses understanding, time, or any methodology. He speaks in his writings a very human, very real, very tender love letter to the Divine.

I liked this book because it draws me also into the heart of God.

read this if you have a tender heart or in quest of one
everyone will have something to worry about, some unfulfilled ambitions. This is a collection of the poet's mystic prayers.I am sure this will move anyone with a tender heart. He was the composer of the Indian national anthem and was also a social reformer and a romantic. This makes me wonder if he wanted to address these questions to god. My immediate goal is to learn bengali and read his poems in his own language. I am also looking forward to read his gitanjali which got him the nobel prize.

Great read aloud!
I recently discovered the author Clare Turlay Newberry and am thrilled and excited about her work. Herbert the Lion is a delightful story about a little girl and her lion and all of the obstacles that they go through. At first I was worried that the illustrations would not grasp my kindergarten students' attention because of it's lightness. Was I WRONG! They absolutely loved the illustrations and story line and I lost count of how many times we reread this book, as well as other books by Newberry. You must read this book and other books by Newberry.

THE LITTLE GIRL WHO WANTED A PET LION
As a child, my Mother really longed for a pet lion and when she grew up she wrote this children's story about a little girl whose wish for a lion comes true. The original book and illustrations have been faithfully copied by Smithmark Publishers as part of their series, CLARE NEWBERRY CLASSICS..

A FORGOTTEN HERO, BUT A HERO
.This book is an account of infantry combat in the Korean War by the war's most decorated soldier. Soon after the war Herbert wrote "Conquest to Nowhere" this book is a more detailed account of his 13 months in Korea. Prior to the war Herbert served as a paratrooper and cold weather survival expert. He arrived in Korea in '50, still a private, and attached himself to the 2nd Division by going AWOL from a replacement depot. When the Chinese enter the war Herbert was attached out to a Turkish brigade and earned the Osminieh, their version of the Medal of Honor and one of only nine men to ever recieve it. Back with his own men he experienced cold and hunger and had many escapes from an advancing enemy. He recieved four Purple Hearts and was offered a battlefield commission, which he refused, but was promoted to Master SGT on the spot. Later, when his company was in reserve, he stayed on the line with the Marines who awarded him his third Silver Star, he also had recieved two Bronze Stars, the Ville De Paris, the Distinguished UN medal, the Korean Service Medal w, six battle stars, and various other awards. While fighting on Heart Break Ridge he was pulled from the lines and sent to Washington D.C. to meet Pres. Truman. His home town gave him a parade and he was awarded the New York State Medal Of Honor. He then started a world tour as America's most decorated soldier. After his discharge Herbert wrote "Conquest To Nowhere" and continued to do P.R. work for the army. He even went to Hollywood, for the army, for the purpose of being photographed with Audie Murphy and was a guest on Groucho Marx's "You bet Your Life Show." This is a good infantry book by a man now mostly forgotten.
