Description
With more than three hundred photographs, Herbert List: The Monograph documents for the first time all phases of List's creativity: the Fotografia Metafisica (as List's early work, with its affinity with the work of de Chirico and Magritte, has come to be known); his photographs of Classical Greek ruins and postwar Munich; his sensitive homoerotic photographs; the artist portraits spanning the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s; and his subtle and touching human-interest photo-essays. Authoritative texts by noted critics and scholars provide historical contexts and influences and detail the development of List's oeuvre. A selection of List's own writings, a comprehensive chronology, a bibliography, and records of exhibitions, collections, and published photographs and essays complete the book. The photographs and essays collected in this volume comprise the definitive presentation of this modern master.

Classic without classicism
Herbert List is one of the most impressive photographers of the 20th century. This book is a masterpiece and offers a wonderful overview of List's work. It gives the opportunity to discover a classical and refreshing approach of the world-which escapes however from classicism.

Classical without classicism
Herbert List belongs to the most impressive photographers of the 20th century, showing a simple but wonderful vision of the world while escaping from classicism... A wonderful publication for "amateurs" and a masterpiece in arts book!

Guide to understanding and identifying African Art
I simply wish that I had this book and/or Dr. Poynor's courses in West African and Central African Art prior to living in Central Africa. Now that I had these courses, I find that this book is less a formal text and more a comprehensive guide to understanding the art forms created in the various regions of Africa by the peoples and cultures. This book is a must for anyone who has a true interest in following this facinating subject. I especially recommend this book to anyone planning to visit or live anywhere in Africa, particularly the Sub-saharan regions.

It brings to all, the reality of such a facinating and prevously skimmed subject, without interjecting personal belief or opinion. All facts in the book are well researched and presented.

Great textbook that can be used for reading
I took an african arts class with Poynor and he used this book and the slide images. This was a wonderful tool. I usually HATE reading art books but this one read like a recreational book. GREAT illustrations! If u would like to learn more about the culture this is definately the book to get.

It's about time
This is the most well-written, comprehensive, and lucid survey of African art available to date. I am using it as the primary text for my introduction to African art at both Princeton University and York College, CUNY and expect my students to come away with a valuable reference text that will not become outdated to quickly.

How to Stop Smoking

READ THIS BOOK AND YOU WILL SAVE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF $$$$$
This book is outstanding. After smoking for more than 10 years, 3+ packs a day of the long unfiltered kind, chewed leaf tobacco and dipped snuff, I had a serious tobacco addiction. I wanted to quit but I just couldn't get by without my tobacco!! A friend told me about this book. I had tried to quit so many times but I always went back to smoking. I agreed to read it but really didn't think it would help me change a thing. I soon found out why this book will help even the most serious smoker stop for good. The author reveals the secrets to success in an easy to understand style. You'll be amazed at what you find in the pages of this book. I figured a "how to" manual would be difficult to read. The book kept my attention from the minute I opened it. I read it in a couple of hours because I couldn't put it down. It's actually fun to read!! I read this book when a pack of smokes cost less than 50 cents. THANKS TO THIS BOOK I HAVEN'T HAD A CIGARETTE FOR MORE THAN 22 YEARS. If I were still smoking today, smokes alone would cost me about $5000 a year. This book is a must for anyone who has ever thought of quitting smoking. If you are even just thinking of quitting, check this book out. It's an easy and enjoyable read!!

I read this book and haven't smoked now for over 40 years!
I am a retired clinical psychologist and have helped many of my clients stop smoking over a period of several decades. Brean's little book is the best I know about. I used it myself over 40 years ago and have not smoked a cigarette since then. (I occasionally smoke a pipe or a cigar--maybe once or twice a year.) The book is based on sound psychological principles and emphasizes proper preparation before you actually quit. A unique feature is its day-by-day pages that you must not read until you quit and then only read each page on its assigned day. It's remarkable how much those little pages help!

Brean's book works!
I smoked 1-3 packs of cigarettes a day for about 30 years and had tried quitting a few times with zero success. This approach worked for me because it gave specific, day-by-day instructions and let me know what to expect. Brean also respected the power of the addiction and the difficulty of quitting, which helped me respect myself for undertaking the task. Brean was a smoker, so he knew why I loved the stuff beyond just the nicotine fix, and he helped me recognize all the other needs I was meeting with cigarettes. Quitting smoking with his method was no tougher to handle than a cold or a little poison ivy. I haven't had a cigarette since 1988! The book is dated, but it's only missing all the newly discovered reasons to quit.

Richly illustrated short review of human evolution.
This short paperback includes an incredible amount of information about human evolution between its covers. Along with up to date text and many color pictures of reconstructions of ancient hominids, there are several first hand accounts of important discoveries of fossils. The perspective of the author emphasizes contributions of French anthropologists at the expense of scientists from other countires, and the author's placement of the earliest modern humans in the Middle East will be controversial. All in all however this is an excellent complement to other introductory material about human origins, and the illustrations alone are worth the reasonable price

A lavishly illustrated introduction to human origins
This is a beautiful book --- especially for the beginner. Easy to read, lavishly illustrated, and small enough not to be heavy, it introduces the reader to various ideas we have had about our origins, Darwin's theory of evolution, and the discoveries of various fossil humans. The introductory illustrations are especially striking because they illustrate the way our species has evolved from ape-like beginnings. These illustrations also graphically show the way culture has evolved along with our bodies. I feel this book is invaluable for a student of biology or anthropology, or anyone who wants an comprehensible introduction to a fascinating but complex subject

Life Changing not just for this life but beyond
This book was transalated from the italian by Herbert Cardinal Vaughn. This is not for a person who is only half heartedly interested in humility. It is for the person who is ready to examime closely all there motives in all situations of their life in mind heart and spirit. The book contains 100 Humility moving sections that need to be read and contemplated numerous times. A persons pride and the pride of the world will be the only thing that will stop the serious christian for having a life changing experience. If your book becomes dog-eared, worn, and pages falling out, then you have started to get the point of the book.

A must read!
Humility of Heart has truly touched my heart. A very easy read and inspiring!

Review from the Publisher
Our Lord said, "Learn of me, because I am meek and humble of heart." (Matt. 11:29). And also, "Amen, I say to you, unless you be converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven." (Matt. 18:3). This classic study in humility describes the nature of that virtue typical of all Saints--the one without which none of us will enter Heaven. Says, "Impregnate yourselves with humility, and you will soon find that all other virtues will follow without any effort on your part." A treasure, filled with insights. Great and sadly needed.

This is one worth reading!!
I normally don't write reviews on books. But this on is worth the exception. I first read this book back in the mid to late 80's., when I first started to become interested in caving. I found this book to be both informative as well as entertaining. I've done cave exploration in Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa and South Dakota. In 1988 I attended the annual convention of the National Speleological Society. It took place that Black Hills of South Dakota that year. I then had a chance to do some spelunking in Jewel Cave. This is by far on of the most exciting caves I have ever explored. While in the cave our group crossed paths with Dwight Deal. He caved with the Conn's during the time period written about in this book. He regaled us with some amusing stories about Jewel Cave.(Quite a interesting person.) As one of the evenings line up for the convention we had a presentation from Herb and Jan. They talk about there adventures in Jewel Cave. And pulled out there personal map from their exploration over the years. Then Jan gave a demonstration on filling and lighting a carbide lamp blindfolded. Herb and Jan are truly amazing. If your interested in caves, this is one you'll not want to put down. This one lives up to its name. It's quite an adventure.

One of the most exciting and readable books about spelunking
Herb and Jan Conn were amateur climbers in the 1930s who fell in love with the Black Hills of South Dakota. At a friend's suggestion, the Conns began moonlighting as spelunkers in winter. When they first visited Jewel Cave, it was a tiny cavern with an intriguing unexplored passage. Luckily for the Conns, that passage led to a mile of unexplored cave passages, then two miles... and exploring Jewel Cave became the Conns' life's work. They describe the exciting exploration (which is still ongoing, with more than 100 miles of passages mapped) with just the right balance of action/adventure, science, and humor. This book is a pioneer of the outdoor/geography genre and is readable, fun and fascinating.

-Review by David Bezanson

A fine caving book.
Almost fifty years ago, two rock climbers entered a 'nice little cave' to survey it. They had never gone caving before, and wanted to try it out. Because of their efforts, that cave, Jewel Cave, is today the second longest cave in the US. This book tells the tale in a fluent, easy style that is sure to delight and enjoy. Next to 'The Longest Cave' it is possibly the most enjoyable exploration story about caving around. you will be amazed at the amount of work a small group of people was able to do, from the sometimes tortuous mapping of the cave, to the hard backbreaking labor involved in making a portion of their discovery open for public viewing, as part of Jewel Cave Natl. Monument. A large map comes with the book so you can follow them as they explore the ever expanding labyrynth. The 'Jewel Cave Adventure' is a great book for everyone, whether you are seriously interested in the undergorund or just looking for a darn good read.

Jolson: The Legend Comes to Life

A Misunderstood Super Star- Al Jolson
I have read several books about Al Jolson and I want to tell you that Goldman's biography is the most accurate and provides you with the best view of the very complex man, Al Jolson. The book is a must for people interested in the history of Showbusiness from the beginning of the 20th. Century until the 1950's. It gaves you a well-rounded view of the master entertainer, his strengths, his problems and most of all the reasons why Jolson was such a complex and dynamic man. Whether you are a Jolson fan or not, this book is a fabulous read. I recommend it highly!

This is the DEFINITVE Jolson bio!
If you love the theatre, or if you just love a book that takes you to another time and place, this book is essential reading. I've read every Jolson biography around, and none can match this one for its scope, its honesty, and its invocation of Jolson's world. The notes exhaustively catalog every recording, every broadcast, and every stage appearance in Jolson's long career -- an incredible achievement, and a priceless resource to future theatrical researchers. The text itself (which is magnificently readable) is an honest but understanding look at Jolson's life and complex personality, explaining much of what drove this man without excusing or condeming his often cruel actions. The real treat here is how Goldman brings the long-dead worlds of Vaudeville and early 20th Century Broadway to life. You can sense the energy and excitement of that era, get into the mindset of oldtime show business -- and understanding Jolson's time makes it infinitely easier to comprehend why he was such a popular phenomenon. This is a model biography, one that knows the difference between writing vibrant history and (as too many others do) just re-hashing old gossip columns. Goldman serves us Al Jolson as a fascinating, egotistic, riveting, hateful, sentimental, insufferable, utterly believeable man -- appropriate for someone who was America's first multi-media superstar. The ever-insecure Jolson would never have approved of some of this candid book, but it is not a tawdry tell-all. Its a classy and well-written showbiz biography well worth treating yourself to.

A Wonderful Biography----I Couldn't Put It Down
I knew the name JOLSON, but nothing about the man. After reading the book, I became a die-hard Jolson Fan. Jolson was of his time, but his talent is timeless, as Mr. Goldman expertly shows us.

Kings and Queens

History can be fun
This book contains a catchy, rhyming poem and colorful full-page illustration for each of the English monarchs. Like the best children's literature, it is as much fun for the adult to read as for the child to hear. And not just for children--I found its jingles helpful in cramming for college English history exams!

Last night on Jeopardy!, someone flubbed a question re the Stuart dynasty. If they had only been exposed to this book, they would have remembered instantly: "James and Charles, Charles and James. They all looked well in picture frames." Another contestant did not know Cromwell's title. Farjeon fans would have recalled: "Lord protect us from Protectors." A unique, valuable, and fun book.

Good for all ages
My first introduction to this wonderful book with a poem for each of England's monarchs was as a child in the early 50s. I loved it then (George was the king), and learned all the poems by heart. My children found it just as pleasing, and by the time these American youngsters were six they too could recite a poem for all the English kings and queens. As young adults, they are now arguing who will get to KEEP this much-read and much-loved book. How I wish I could find another copy!

A Fun Way To Remember the English Royalty!
I loved each poem. It has made it easier to remember who did what and remember the order of the English Monarchs. I think every American child should get the opportunity to learn these enchanting poems. As an adult, I enjoy the black and white characature each poem represents. This book is a must for any home that loves England, history and literature.

Let My People Eat!: Passover Seders Made Simple

Passover help
This book has everything you need to make your sedar a success, from the basics to the more complicated. There is no pictures in the book of the items. I noticed some of the items need to be spiced up to taste, other wise there bland. For new or not so new jews, this book will be helpful in getting through the 8 breadless days.

Beyond Gefilte Fish
Zell Schulman should be commended for this fabulous Passover cookbook. With a beautiful layout, charming line illustrations (and a few color photographs), and clear text, she makes the idea of tackling a seder seem absolutely doable. Of particular note are the many "menus" she suggests, detailing recipes for multi-course meals. She has different suggestions for Ashkenazic, Sephardic, "off the shelf" (utilizing available kosher for passover products), vegetarian, healthful (low in fat but high in flavor), and an ecumenical potluck (acknowledging the fact that many other religious groups choose to observe the holiday that was the cause of the Last Supper of Jesus and his apostles). The ecumenical potluck has kosher suggestions but all the other menus are described in a kosher format (meat, pareve or dairy).

Since my husband and I are vegetarian, I was looking for something beyond the more "hippie" resources available for Jewish vegetarian cooking and this book has more than exceeded my expectations. (A note to others thinking of preparing some of the vegetarian dishes: Schulman does include chicken bouillon granules in some of her vegetarian recipes which would render the food NOT vegetarian by the majority of the veggie world - just use powdered vegetable soup granules instead.) She also has an entire extra chapter of other passover recipes so you can switch or substitute to your heart's content.

I think this volume would be especially appreciated by the first-time Seder host/hostess as Schulman gives you a diagram of what your seder table should look like, the various seder plate items and their meaning, and an excellent reference for kosher wines and liquors (I would also recommend kosher.org as an additional resource). This beautiful holiday will certainly be enhanced by anyone choosing to read and implement the suggestions of this book.

It made my very first seder a hit!
Its a valuable book for anyone preparing for Passover
