Tears of Laughter at a Funeral
This version of the play accurately portrays the ups and downs of the not so typical Jewish Funeral.A great show and great reading!

The Best Play of the Interactive Lot
I saw the play on Off-Broadway and I love it. And I am happy to report that the published version is very well done. One of the funniest plays ever...

A gripping book!
Grave Secrets was a terrific book! From the moment that I began reading, I was hooked! Through all the twists and turns of moving to a new city, meeting new friends, and discovering the secret of the town, I didn't want to put it down. I teach grade 4 and 5 and read this book aloud to my class. They loved every minute of it!

A very captivating and mysterious novel
I found "Grave Secrets" to be a mysterious and yet believable story of a boy named Nicholas and his neighbour Marion. When Nicholas discovers odd and surprising secrets to an old graveyard next to his new home, Marion acts as if it's normal. I really enjoyed "Grave Secrets" .

Heritage of the star

captivating, imaginative, and irresistably thought-provoking
Embarassingly enough, I'd not even heard of Ms. Engdahl before my wife introduced me to her works (the star trilogy, etc.). This book, along with its sequels, has proven to be one of the most thought-provoking and captivating works that I've read in years... and that's saying quite a bit. Not only were the setting and plot creative, the characters were very accessible, personally... and I found special empathy with Noren's quest for meaning while blessed/cursed with a questioning mind that doesn't easily settle comfortably in one place. This book was stirring, touching, and hopeful in a very wise, subtle, and engaging way. I'm only sorry that the trilogy is ended! (Any change of a sequel...? :) )

Same as "This Star Shall Abide"
This is the title that "This Star Shall Abide" was published under in UK and comonwealth.

Good book to learn about Philippines without going @^:^@
More than a travel guide, it spends more time on background and the meaning of sites in the Philippines. Many beautiful photos. Good book to learn about Philippines without going. My American friends that have read this book say it was BiG help to them in understanding not just travel only.

Very Informative
This is one of the books you should get when you're going to the Philippines. It is a very long book filled with good detailed facts. The photographers who took the pictures got very good shots of the Philippines. Another good thing about this book is that is has very good information when your touring the Philippines in the back of the book. It tells you information about the weather, lodging, holidays and festivals, what should be worn, and even how to speak basic Tagalog (the official language of the Philippines). There's a lot of things I haven't mentioned. If you want a good quality guidebook on the Philippines, then you should try this book!

The devastating precision of great writing...
Sylvia Foley's Life in the Air Ocean is a quick read in that it grabs you and won't let go. But layered and exact observations about the inner life and its consequent actions reward the careful reader. Her precise, beautiful writing captures the moments across years that make up a family history -- not the public one, but a private, under-the-skin history.

At once, heart-wrenching and funny.
This book is outstanding. A collection of stories, it reads more like a novel. Ruth, who might be referred to as the main character, is a survivor. But what makes her different, what makes her compelling, is the complexity of her responses to pain. Unwilling to let those who hurt her control her, she takes her own pain hostage, showing it, as it were, who is in charge.

These stories are not about victimization; they are about the high price of rejecting the idea of victimization. Ruth gets hurt, yes. But her responses to pain are the responses of an organism. Her survival -- and indeed this is precisely what it is -- is survival in the most Darwinian terms: Ruth survives by adapting -- not by running away.

There is triumph here, redemption in Ruth's fear of fear. This book is not so much a book to be read as a book to keep on reading.

Gripping
I could not put this book down. Ms. Griffin has written a chilling book intertwining facts of disturbing issues in our public school system with a fictional twist. I would recommend this book to anyone!

The Little Black School House
This book tells of the corruption that can occur in our public schools. Although some of the plot crosses the lines of legal possibilites, I began to wonder just how much of the bizarre really does go on in our school systems.

Ms. Griffin very cleverly weaves into her story the world of the supernatural. If you are concerned about our education systems and like a Stephan King-type twist to a story, read "The Little Black School House." I highly recommend it!

I go to Kindergarden & my favorite book is The Littlest Pair
My name is Elizabeth, and I go to Kindergarden. I wrote this book report for school. My favorite author is Sylvia Rouss because she is a teacher, & she wrote The Littlest Pair. The setting is on Noah's Ark, and the characters are Noah, two termites, and the other animals. There was a flood in the world, and all the animals hated the termites until the termites helped them. The book makes you realize that everybody is important, and my favorite part is when Noah said, 'To God, we all matter!"

Also recommended: I also liked Charlotte's Web, Love, and Help Me Be Good.

Delightful and Full of Meaning
"The Littlest Pair" - from the Jerusalem Post by Leslie Cohen
Written in rhymed couplets, The Littlest Pair will delight the ears of young children, while its friendly-looking animal characters will appeal to their eyes. Although meant for pre-school children, it delivers a sophisticated message...against stereotyping, and acting with prejudice towards "the other." Rouss creates an all-too-human situation in which the animals refuse to accept a pair of termites as passengers on Noah's ark. Their fear turns them into an angry mob. But, much to their surprise, the termites devise a scheme to save them when the storm makes the ark lunge perilously from side to side. The apologies at the end conclude with the significant admonition by Noah: "It's important to accept each other's ways. We're all God's creatures and to God, we all matter." Its universal moral makes this book suitable for children of all ages and faiths.

M.E. and Morton

Noone does it like Ms. Cassedy
Even though I am now nineteen years old, Sylvia Cassedy's novels still have the same hold on me as they did back when I was a little tike. "Behind The Attic Wall" was my ultimate favorite. There is a certain magic and spelndor within her books that just can't be beat. It is sad to think her passing will cease her wonderful, descriptive tales; but she will not be forgotten. "M.E. and Morton" is a herat-warming tale about M.E.- a young girl- her mentally retarded brother, Morton, and their mutual friend, Polly. The book teaches us that people can change for the better. That sometimes we love someone deep inside but never show our true feelings until something, (or someone), comes along and shows us about those feelings. The book is about finding true friendship, and learning from each other. Learning to accept, and appreciate. Learning how to love... I recommed anyone to this book, along with any other novel by this excellent author. She knows how to bring out the innocent child in us all. Her books are pure fantasy-like creations that will warm anyone's heart.

IMHO, Sylvia Cassedy's best novel
I've read all of Sylvia Cassedy's novels many times over, and "M.E. and Morton" is my favourite one. The characters are very well defined, and the story is original and often humourous. Luckily I found a copy at the library sale, but nevertheless I'm upset to find that it's out of print. The first time I read this book I hated Polly, the girl who befriends M.E. and Morton, but when I read it again, I began to wish I had had a friend like her when I was M.E.'s age. I highly recommend this book, as it is one of my favourite children's novels, and Sylvia Cassedy was really quite a fine writer.

Mama Stew: An Anthology: Reflections and Observations on Mothering

a labor of love & inspiration!
Truly a labor of love from all the contributors who live in & around Port Townsend on the Quimper Peninsula at the mouth of the Puget Sound, in the State of Washington, Elisabeth Rochford Haight & Sylvia Platt have done an admirable job of editing this extra-ordinary collection of reflections & observations on mothering.

I thought I could list my five favorite entries, & found I could not, because each one, be it a poem, a painting, a story haunts my heart, & fills my mind with my own memories about my mother & my time as a mother.

MAMA STEW is to be savored, quietly in your favorite place to read a book. Each entry is richly textured with emotions, memories & everyday philosophy, that verges on elation.

Very well done!

beautiful
