The tobacco night riders of Kentucky and Tennessee, 1905-1909

Nall's book is the primer on the Ky Night Riders.
Nall's is the story one of the greatest movements in the history of the American spirit. It well covers the facts in the agricultural price war that changed the farm economy of the region forever. Faced with economic starvation tobacco farmers united, then had to defend with force their right to live and farm and make a descent return on their labor. In doing so they changed the future for tobacco farmers and instituted price and acreage/poundage allotments to control tobacco production that have remained until this present day. My family was involved in the tobacco wars, my grandfather lived in the town of Cobb, Kentucky next door to the firey Dr. Dave Amoss who led the farmer's army, the "silent brigade....yet the full story has not been told. Expect it to be futher told when "The Last Nightrider" a novel based on the exploits of my family during this time is subsequently published. Nall's book is required reading for the history buff and for the economist, the romantic and those with courage enough to secure their own fate....

the definative work on this very unique time in history
mr nall has written the most factual of many works on the subject to date . when doing research on the night rider activities in the black patch you will always see a thank you to dr. nall for his work it is the definative work on this very unique time in history. !!!!!!!!a must for every true scholar on the tobacco night riders of kentucky and tenn.

Good overview of an often forgotten army
If it wasn't for the Star-Spangled Banner, most Americans would probably lump the War of 1812 into the same bin of forgotten wars with the Mexican War and Spanish-American War. Even then, I'm sure they wouldn't be able to tell you a darn thing about any of the details.

This book gives a through overview to the United States Army as it progressed from 1812 through 1815. America had this horrible habit in its early years (and even up until World War II) of cutting its military in peace time and then getting itself into wars unprepared. What starts out as a slightly disorganized army in 1812 turns into an army that would route troops that served with Wellington in Europe.

Probably the strength of this book is that the author doesn't try to be all things to all people. Instead of giving an overview of all the branches or even both sides of the conflict as was done in Osprey's earlier work on the subject, it is very specific and therefore a good reference for such a short book. The prints are interesting to look at and the photos of extant uniforms and equipment are priceless.

Gray Doom
This is an excellent book and reference for the American Army in the War of 1812, America's true 'forgotten war.' The author, a recognized uniform authority and historian, has done an excellent job within the guidelines of the Osprey series and has produced a volume that should be owned by anyone with an interest in the War of 1812.

The color illustrations are excellently done, as well as accurate, chronicling an army of amateurs, both on the enlisted and the officer level, that, through defeat and hardship, grew into a professional force that held at bay, and defeated, 'Wellington's Invincibles', and saved the United States as an independent nation. All of the combat arms are covered, rifle dress, summer and fatigue dress, as well as winter uniform and the various differences in uniform of the Regular infantry, due both to lack of regulation colored cloth and the various changes in uniform during the war.

The black and white illustrations, mostly of original uniform items, greatly aid the historian and researcher, and the text definitely shows that the author has done his homework. Both primary and secondary sources are listed on the last page, demonstrating the depth of research that has gone into this valuable volume. It is definitely a work of historic scholarship and not just a 'picture book.'

It should be noted that this book covers the Regulars, and not the militia or the better trained, uniformed, and disciplined volunteer militia. Hopefully, the author will also do another Osprey covering these troops to round out the study. This work is highly recommended and is both solid uniformology and military history.

Great Desk Resource
I'm a tax attorney and I have this book as a desk resource. It is a great general text on a variety of tax issues. This book has helped me find the quick answers to countless "simple" tax questions.

Comprehensive Textbook covering Corporate Tax
This textbook has a counterpart INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX, also published by West's Federal Taxation that is used extensively by business schools as well as accounting classes covering all the aspects of taxation.

The book is written in an easy to understand manner, which follows the most important codes that are used in tax today. The only drawback of these books are the fact that since the tax codes are constantly changing, the books are updated about every year.

Easy reading for kids, great discussion starter for parents.
This book has sparked many conversations on why things we do are right or wrong. There are absolutes in this world and there are consequences for wrong behaviors. Great format that is easy to read and thumb through, the bible verses are great for kids and adults!

Great Catalog
I thought this book was great! The pictures of the objects are beautiful. Where a picture could not be obtained there is usually a detailed sketch of the object. The descriptions give not only insight into use of the archaological object but also surrounding information like similar objects and archeological context. Then the essays descibe the time period and unknown/debated issue of Egyptian Archeology. As a newbie to Egyptian Archaeology I found the book easy to read and felt that things were explained well.

All You Need to Know About Analysis of Ordinal Data
This book by Hildebrand is a little gem that I recently discovered in the course of looking up other information. At less than 100 pages, the book is easily overlooked on library shelves, but proves that great things come in small packages. The author presents a clear, concise, and practical exposition of how to analyze ordinal data, and what to do with the results. There is plenty of math for the mathematically inclined, but plenty of practical examples so that non-mathematical researchers can easily perform good analysis of ordinal data. Professional statisticians would, of course, prefer more technical detail, but for those of us "in the trenches" who need to know how to apply statistics, this text is invaluable. I liked the book so much, I bought a copy. What more can I say?

EXPOSES MARTHA JEFFERSON-SALLY HEMINGS HALF-SISTER MYTH
An outstanding and well researched expose of the Martha Jefferson-Sally Hemings half-sister myth. The rumors and political slandering of Thomas Jefferson began with early political enemies of Jefferson, some fired from office or denied office due to malfeasance or unsuitability for government office. The notorius scandalmonger reporter, James T. Callender, continued the "Campaign Lies", (the Tom Woodson charge was exposed by there being NO Jefferson/Woodson DNA match), and these slandering efforts were carried out by Samuel Wetmore in the Madison Hemings interview in Pike Co, Ohio. Many of the statements contained in this interview have been exposed as being very doubtful under close and minute research.

Recent evaluations of these misleading findings of the Jefferson-Hemings DNA Study of 1998 and the resultant sensationalist media coverage, would lead one to believe that Thomas Jefferson is guilty of fathering Hemings children. Nothing could be further from the truth as reported in the Jefferson Scholars Commission Report, a blue ribbon panel of thirteen prominent professors, released April 12, 2001. The Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society has links to the full S.C. report.

The authors have long researched all the material and have personally visited many of the covered sites. There are many excellent references cited and for all who wish to keep current on the Jefferson-Hemings controversy should read this book and also the Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society book, "The Jefferson-Hemings Myth, An American Travesty."
