intelligent, timely and beautiful
this book, published in conjunction with the show at the hirshhorn museum, digs well into the current controversy of beauty in art. it undertakes this risky proposition and manages to develop and produce an elegant catalogue of that which is beautiful in contemporary art.

No Exaggeration, a book truly worth 5 stars!
This book is FABULOUS!!! Since my visit to the Canadian Rockies over two years ago, I have searched for a book which could capture the spectacular images I remember. David and Marc Muench's amazing landscape photographs are magnificent. J. Udall's essay on this region is equally captivating, amusing and above all reminds me that I must return there soon! In a world of overhype and hyperbole, this book is truly matchless.

THE fracture care reference
Felt by many to be the Gold standard in orthopedic fracture care. The text is comprehensive, providing in-depth literature reviews and the authors prefered method of treatment. The text formatting style makes it difficult to quickly/easily obtain the "need to know" information regarding a particular topic. Overall, well worth it.

Royal Family, Royal Lovers: King James of England and Scotland

Dark secrets of a Gt King ... will shock some
King James, sponsor of the famous Authorized "King James" Bible, is often lauded as defender of the faith by some who worship his 1611 publication as the be-all and end-all of all English Bible translations. Many hagiographic works abound, but Bergeron's isn't one of those.

While writing his Basilicon Doron to attack the sin of sodomy, James himself used his royal position to shield himself from such a charge against himself. Bergeron digs up the historical dirt and shares a contemporary's view of the hypocrisy, a diary entry in 1622 by one Simonds D'Ewes of a conversation he'd had with a friend:
"Of things I discoursed with him that weere secrett as of the sinne of sodomye, how frequente it was in this wicked cittye, and if God did not provide some wonderfull blessing against it, wee could not but expect some horrible punishment for it; especially it being as wee had probable cause to feare, a sinne in the prince as well as the people, which God is for the most part the chastiser of himselfe, because noe man else indeed dare reprove or tell him them of ther faults." (Bergeron, p. 183)

Many more pieces of evidence are to be found in those pages, and what emerges from Bergeron's picture is that of a great man who was both King of England and Scotland and quite human.

Sacred Vision: A Man's Legacy
This is a wonderful book! It boils down the truths of a spiritual life in a few short chapters and forces you to think about what it means to be a Christian, a man and a dad. Don't bother with this book if you want theology...this man's a teacher for men.

A masterful front door to the life of an extraordinary woman
Through her poise, tact, charm, and personal heroism, Dolley Payne Madison has long been one of the most-admired women in the early history of the American Republic. In this exquisite sampling of Dolley's letters, both scholars and general readers alike have great reason to rejoice. For years, the devoted University of Virginia team which lovingly collected and painstakingly edited the papers of James Madison also paid equal attention to his soulmate, Dolley. David B. Mattern (Senior Associate Editor of The Papers of James Madison), and Holly C. Shulman (Research Associate Professor, Studies in Women and Gender at the University of Virginia) have provided the portal through which generations of researchers and writers will pass to meet Dolley. The 442-page book provides not only a well-balanced selection of meticulously edited letters to and from Dolley, but also a series of short, factual essays which frame and give context to each period of her life. In addition, a marvelous 24-page biographical directory provides thumbnail biographies of persons mentioned in her letters. I pre-ordered this book the moment I learned of its intended publication, and it now forms a cornerstone for the research on my forthcoming biography of this amazing First Lady, "Dolley Madison: From Hostess to Heroine" (Corinthian Books, June 2004). -Richard N. Côté, author of "Mary's World: Love, War, and Family Ties in Nineteenth-century Charleston" and "Theodosia Burr Alston: Portrait of a Prodigy."

Excellent Biography of James F. Byrnes
Political biographies are difficult to write and oftentimes more difficult to read. David Robertson's biography of James F. Byrnes is rich in detail, history, and brings alive the character of many prominent political figures. James F. Byrnes served as a Congressman, United States Senator, and Governor of South Carolina as well as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Secretary of State under Harry S. Truman, and "Assistant President" to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Brynes's autobiography was appropriately titled, "All In One Lifetime". Robertson has skillfully described the political life of Byrnes who rightfully enjoyed a reputation as one of the most crafty powerbrokers in the country. Byrnes's career stretched from just after the turn of the century until leaving office as Governor in 1955. Brynes remained extremely influential in South Carolina, helping to push the Palmetto State towards the Republican party, despite his having held office as a Democrat. Robertson beautifully illustrates not only Byrnes, but a host of personalities including FDR, Truman, and South Carolina personages such as racist Governor and Brynes foe Coley Blease. Any student of history should certainly read "Sly and Able". Those who are interested in history, South Carolina, politics, government, or the struggle for equality and civil rights will surely find David Robertson's biography of James F. Byrnes a rewarding experience
