"The Five Stages of Human Capital Appraisal."
"Most companies have human resources personnel and various HR policies and programs", B. Friedman, J. Hatch, and D. M. Walker write, "but few companies know their value-or how to enhance it. In the view of too many corporate chiefs, HR managers are mere functionaries implementing programs that are no more than extra costs to be cut in times of trouble...Everyone in progressive organizations recognizes that the HR function must become more closely linked to strategy. As the HR function evolves from administrative to strategic, the question can be asked (and objectively answered), what are we doing to enhance the value of human capital in our organization? Although the effectiveness of the HR department is a part of this answer, it is only one part. Arthur Andersen has developed an approach that can help companies measure the value of all policies affecting human capital, and align these policies more closely to corporate goals. This method, which we can call 'Human Capital Appraisal', shows how companies can measure and increase the returns on their investments in people (p.39)."

In this context, they describe a series of necessary five stages in the management of human capital covering the five major human capital areas as (a). recruitment, retention, and retirement, (b). rewards and performance management, (c).career development, succession planning, and training, (d). organizational structure, and (e). human capital enablers, as follows:

1. Stage One - Clarification: In this stage, companies identify and confirm their overall business direction or strategy in the broadest sense of the terms.(for a detailed discussion of this stage see Chapter 4)

2. Stage Two - Assessment: In this stage, companies calculate the cost of investment in human capital, and the value employees place on this investment.(for a detailed discussion of this stage see Chapter 5)

3. Stage Three - Design: In this stage, companies begin to create programs that can yield better returns on human capital. (for a detailed discussion of this stage see Chapter 6)

4. Stage Four - Implementation: In this stage, companies put these proposed changes into practice. (for a detailed discussion of this stage see Chapter 7)

5. Stage Five - Monitoring: In this stage, companies check this new system. (for a detailed discussio of this stage see Chpter 8)

As conclusion, they argue that 'Human Capital Appraisal' is a holistic approach based on the two equally important dimensions of stages and areas-time and space. It is in the squaring of these elements that the real substance of human capital development can emerge. By following a sequence for enhancing human capital, and by ensuring coverage of all areas within each part of the sequence, companies can improve their returns on investment in this area-by far the most critical for companies today (p.45).

Strongly recommended for executives and HR professionals.

Excellent
A long-awaited book on the topic of Human Capital. A worthy investment

A rigorous investment perspective of the human organization.
The meaning of the term "human capital" is far from clearly established, but the authors press for the need to shift management's perspective of people from a supply or resource to being capital, requiring investment and valuation. With this view of organization as their springboard, the authors present a model for managing human capital that applies a five stage process to five broadly defined HR areas or functions. A central theme is that there must be a fit between human capital programs and strategy, along with a focus on cost and value. The aim of measuring the effectiveness of human capital remains a subject to be further explored in a sequel to this book. Overall, this is a worthy effort to create a more rigorous investment-oriented mindset for thinking about, and proactively addressing, the human dimension of organization.

Brilliant!
A delightful review of the world of Doctor Who as it stood in the 1970's. It includes many rare pictures from the series as well as publicity shots and behind-the-scenes photos. From Adams, Douglas to Zygons (Terror of), this is a wonderfully produced Master-piece! A truly great book for all Doctor Who fans!

the sixties is a true masterpiece
I've just read this wonderful book and it is WELL worthe reading so dont think twice about buying this book

If you love Who -- then get this book
This is my favorite non-fiction Doctor Who book of all time. The book is loaded with some never before seen footage and insightful data. The layout is wonderful and captures the decade that brought us Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. My favorite chapter of the book features merchandise from the 70's -- so far the only Who book that addresses this aspect of the show.

A Fantastic Book
This is a massive book. It will soon be "THE REFERENCE" to most all Civil War debates.

If I were to pick just one book to go to, for a search of Civil War information, this one would have to be it.
From Battle, Politics, Leaders, speechs, debates, economics, literature, etc., IT IS ALL IN HERE.

This is one book that everyone would be proud to own. ( As well, as the kind that almost caves your chest in, laying in bed reading--It IS A BIG BOOK.)

There is such a wealth of information, and every thing is solidily backed up with excellent references. It's a fantastic book.

Indespensible Civil War resource
This humongous encyclopedia is easily the best reference I have ever seen on the Civil War. The thing is 2600 pages long, has 1600 entries, and weighs about 7 pounds, and is quite well written and edited. It covers military, political, and social events, and biographies equally. The articles are generally well written but short and introductory rather than exhaustive. Has lots of photos, illustrations and maps (the maps are OK but not spectacular), and a wonderful bibliogaphy section. I can't recommend this book enough. I learn something new every time I open it.

Civil War afficianados need this book!
First of all, this thing is MASSIVE! When you're done reading it you can use it for weight in an exercise routine. However, it has over 2200 pages so it will be a long read. That having been said, I believe this will henceforth be THE standard reference guide to the Civil War. It is packed with great photos and maps, some I have never seen before. The capsule summaries are well written and informative. I have glanced through this book and now I am ready to dive in and read it cover to cover. Get this one if you are a Civil War or History buff!

Best Book Written on Race!
Just finished this insightful book last weekend, and I must say that it is the best book on race in America that I've read in the past several years. It reads well and is full of helpful resources. A must-read for anyone interested in finding unity in diversity in America.

Critical for those interested in racial reconciliation.
Both powerful and eloquent, James Waller's compelling examination of racism in America is beyond timely-- it is crucial for our nation's evolving consciousness. Nowhere is the convergence of race and culture felt more acutely than in our public schools. Face to Face, therefore, is critical reading for anybody -- teacher, administrator, parent -- who recognizes the role, potential, and responsibility of our schools in fostering racial reconciliation. I highly recommend this book!

Face the truth with this book!
It is difficult to accept the truth about ourselves as human beings and Waller's book takes the daring step of doing just that. We are all guilty of racist behavior no matter how well we have been brought up to love and accept one another. Waller tells us to face the truth about ourselves and open our eyes in order to diminish the impact of racism in future generations. It took guts to write this book.

Dr. Who: The Third Doctor Handbook is a wonderful read.
Doctor Who: The Handbook - The Third Doctor is a great reference guide to the Jon Pertwee era as the dashing, man-in-action, earth-bound Time Lord from 1970 thru 1974. Superbly researched, authors David J. Howe & Stephen James Walker take us through the details of the development of the Third Doctor's adventures. The series now became more action packed. Featuring 8 chapters, focusing on actor Jon Pertwee, along with episode story reviews, production development, and also a feature on the making of the season 9 story, the 4 part "Day of the Daleks" (1972). This book has it all, which makes for some interesting behind-the-scenes information.

The Third Doctor Handbook is a great addition to any Doctor Who fans' collection. It also features an introduction by the Third Doctor himself, the late Jon Pertwee, written in April 1996, a month before he passed away. Published in 1996, this was the fifth volume in the Doctor Who series of handbooks.

A fantastic reference book for any "Doctor Who" fan!
The book, Doctor_Who:_the_Handbook:_the_Third_Doctor, is an excellent book in the "Doctor Who" handbook series by Walker, Stammers, and Howe. The book is divided into several sections for easy reference, contains an episode guide for the third Doctor's era with reviews of each episode, and provides a really nice overview of the era of the third Doctor and the events of the time period during which the episodes were produced and aired.

Personally, I wish the book had included more information on the discoveries/recoveries of lost Pertwee episodes, as well as their restoration to color; since, the stories behind these are very fascinating.

Overall, this is a very well researched volume; and, I highly recommend this book as well as the rest in the series.

"I am the Doctor."
Fans of the series, fans of Jon Pertwee's Doctor, or even to Jon Pertwee's other work are owed this volume from the Handbook series by Virgin Publishing. Like all of the books before it, it goes in depth into not just what and how (the late) Pertwee acted in "Doctor Who", but as well, much of the background info, behind-the-scenes, etc. which are a fan's necessity. Not only do I recommend this non-fiction paperback, but all the others in the series (there's seven altogether).

Wonderful
I am a high school math teacher and I use this book to help my freshmen learn about ratios and proportions. They use the proportions to calculate how much they could swallow, how far they could jump, etc. They're astonished at the results!

This Is An Amazing Book
This book offers a look at the wonders of the natural world by comparing the capabilities of many different animals and birds in human terms. The concept, together with the large and vivid illustrations hooked me from the beginning. This book really challenges a child to think and causes an adult to marvel at God's creations. "If you hopped like a frog...you could jump from home plate to first base in one mighty leap!...If you grew as fast in your first nine months as you did in the nine months before you were born...you would have been...heavier than 2 1/2 million elephants!" Just imagine that!

If You Hopped Like a Frog
This book was so enjoyable! The pictures were great! It gave you facts, and then expanded on those facts to give you information how it would affect you. As a teacher, I could use this book as an introduction and then have my students make a spin-off class book.

At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook
In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. A vade mecum (lat. ¨goes with me¨, means essential) for every CATV engineer or technician.

Excellent coverage of current cable issues.
The text covers the subject of cable television from an introductory level up to engineering levels. I particularly liked the coverage of current issues in cable, such as Impulse pay per view. The chapter on modulation was informative. With my physics background I was happy to see the book has a good scattering of equations. An equation is indispensable in many situations.

comprehensive, well organized, complete, a must have
Every technical library should include this easy to understand volume explaining all aspects of cable television. The authors have drawn from their years of education and practical experience in the Cable industry to produce an excellent reference guide for anyone interested in television and cable technology. Included are chapters on Analog TV, Digital Compression, Cable Data Transport,Headend Signal Processing, Coax, Fiber, Consumer Interface and Equipment Compatability, and other topics. Great minds have produced a fine book!

National Parks of America
"National Parks of America" is a wonderful collection of photographs from the National Parks in the United States. David Muench does a marvelous job capturing some of the the most beautiful places in the United States. His photographs include the Alaskan National Parks, the Grand Canyon, the giant redwoods in Redwood National Park, the giant sequoias in Sequoia National Park, the natural bridges in the national parks in Utah, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Isle Royale in Michigan, and the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. There is a map of all of the places in the National Park System, and an essay by Stewart L. Udall, former Secretary of the Interior under Kennedy and Johnson, and James R. Udall. I cannot recommend this book enough. You must see it to fully understand what an outstanding book it truly is. It made me want to visit these places as soon as possible!

Wonderful!
This is the book with the most beautiful pictures of America's National Parks I have seen so far. The print quality of the photographs is excellent. I have given this book as a gift to many of my friends and relatives!

ONE OF THE BEST ACTION/SCI-FI STORIES!
This one really took me to really take a shine to this series. The first two were good but lacked that something, and this one had that something! Awesome reading on all levels, fun and exciting. A must read for the good folks out there.

Action-packed and lyrical
An intelligent action-adventure story, showing a lot of research and care. The characters really shine in this one and there are some very lyrical scenes, in between all the explosions and gunfights.

Lots of surprises and explosions!
The Outlanders series is a real surprise, and the third novel, "Savage Sun" has a lot of them. It has more science-fiction elements than the first two as well some really frightening scenes. Of course, the action is in the same Axler tradition--lots of explosions, "blaster" battles and kick ass fights...not to mention some great stuff about myths and legends. I really look forward to the next book in this series.
