The oldest work of literature in recorded history
The Epic Of Gilgamesh: A Myth Revisited is the oldest work of literature in recorded history and an epic poem which is aptly translated into English by Danny P. Jackson, and into Hebrew by Saul Tchernichovsky. Color illustrations in an impressive mosaic style mark this hardbound, bilingual rendition, and three informative essays about Gilgamesh round out this most impressive volume. An evocative and powerful presentation, The Epic Of Gilgamesh is an enthusiastically recommended addition to any personal, academic or public library collection.

Useful study tool for students of epidemiology
This is a useful study guide and reference tool for anyone who is starting in epidemiology. It gives a great overview on study designs, statistics, and a great deal of other useful information for creating, implementing and evaluating a study. I have found it extremely useful in both my studies and in the implementation of studies. I would recommend this book as a study tool in any epidemiology course!

Evolutionary Paleobiology: In Honor of James W. Valentine
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (1996)
Authors: James W. Valentine, Douglas H. Erwin, Jere H. Lipps, and David Jablonski
Amazon base price: $80.00
Average review score:

Fine Paleobiological Research in honor of Valentine
"Evolutionary Paleobiology" is an elegant overview of the major themes of paleobiological research in the mid-1900's; one which continues to the present. It contains excellent papers from the most prominent researchers in the field, encompassing not only paleobiological aspects but also neontological - especially molecular biology - approaches to studying evolutionary paleobiology. This is a scientific celebration of the career of distinguished paleobiologist James W. Valentine, whom many would regard as the father of evolutionary paleobiology; each paper covers some aspect of his ecumenical approach to paleobiological research, ranging from molecular biology to field and taxonomic studies. Admittedly, this is one volume that is aimed primarily for students of paleobiology, and, in general, evolutionary biology, but it also should be of interest to historians of science.

Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management (Communication Textbook)

Authors: James E. Grunig, David M. Dozier, and William P. Ehling
Amazon base price: $125.00

Interesting Read--1st Phase in Larger Research Project
I got the skinny on this project from Grunig himself--he was my advisor in graduate school. This is the opening introduction publication of a large research project he and his colleagues were conducting for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Taking their inspiration from Peters and Waterman's "In Search of Excellence", this book provides a comprehensive look at public relations, giving readers an idea of where the field is and where it is heading. I'd consider this a must-have resource for anyone wanting to move up the ranks as a public relations professional.

Best Overall Review of Fiber Optics
I purchased this book, "Introduction to Fiber Optics" by Crisp and "Understanding Fiber Optics" by Hecht to get up to speed on the technology. I work in finance, and am not an engineer. I found this book to be the most clear of the three, and by far the easiest to understand. This book had better diagrams and used better analogies to explain the technology than did the other two books.

The book was laid out logically, and did a good job of building on knowledge explained in previous chapters. There were one page summaries at the tale of each chapter, which were helpful in allowing you to either skip or skim the text. The glossary at the end of the book was especially useful, as was the end chapter on future trends within the industry. The book was a quick read, and once I had finished it I felt comfortable engaging in a discussion with people much more accomplished in the field than myself.

change in foucault?
great overview of what most consider a slight change in emphasis for foucault: consideration of self and its constitution. the interviews are the best part. foucault is candid and possibly more accessible than usual; although maybe as a consequence more vague at points as well.

Awesome book when you don't want to read alot
I'm 15 and had to critique a book having to do with the Middle Ages. While other people chose The Prince and bigger books I sorta cheated and got this 30 page book with pictures. It had lots of informative facts and little cartoon drawings that helped me better understand the info. It took me 20 minutes to read so it was really easy but I actually learned alot.

Foundations of T'Ien-T'Ai Philosophy: The Flowering of the Two Truths Theory in Chinese Buddhism
Published in Paperback by Asian Humanities Press (1995)
Authors: Paul L. Swanson, David Chappel, and James A. Heisig
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $12.00
Average review score:

6th Century Chinese Buddhist thought, served in small bites.
This book will be of interest to those engaged in Chinese philosophy and Ch'an or Zen meditation practice. Swanson writes very well on an unquestionably difficult topic, presenting one particular slice (Two Truths Theory) of that great Buddhist systematizer, Chih-I.

China was a hotbed of sutras, treatises, and meditation practices in the Sixth Century. Zen practitioners will note that this was the time of the Third Patriarch, Hui-Neng. The most attractive feature of this presentation is that the reader gets some good looks at Chih-I's source material, the totality of Buddhist ideas and attitudes that prevailed in China at that time. The mechanical differences between the views of Hinayana and Mahayana on the same subjects are discussed in ways that are both convincing and thought-provoking.

You read this book with a marking pen in your hand. When you think you have "grokked" the text, you flip to the marvelous "system" charts in the back o! f the book for the summary look.

Meditators will easily recognize the sources of their methods in the many concepts presented.

Superb overview of the history of process thought.
David Ray Griffin's essay on Hartshorne is more than worth the price of the book all by itself.
