accurate to a fault
the first time i read this book, i was 8, and my father had just recently been diagnosed with cancer. i rediscovered it at 10 (just after his death) and in 7th grade (the age of the book's protagonist); after that i never lost track of it again. i treasured the book like a secret diary because it so perfectly fit every emotion i'd ever felt, every struggle i'd ever faced. the parallels were so great to my own story that i refused to let a close friend borrow the book because of how much about me it would reveal. this book is well-written and deserves to be back in print. my struggles would have been a thousand times harder without this book to show me just how normal all of my fears were, and it's a book that any child or preteen who has lost a parent should consider reading.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!!
This is one of my all-time favorite books, and this is arguably Ms. Martin's best novel ever. I cried and cried reading this wonderful story, mostly because I lost my beloved grandmother to cancer. I identified with every struggle the O'Hara family faced in the wake of the death of their father, mostly I identified with Liza and Hope, who mourned in different ways. I can't recommend this simple but powerful book enough. I don't care how old you are. It's worth it.

This is a great story!
It has been a long time since I have read this book, so I don't remember a lot of the details, but this is one of my favorite books. As a former teacher I tend to be very selective about books for teenagers. This is a great story. It is also very realistic. Of course, I have a personal interest in the story - my mother has cardiomyopathy, the same disease that the main character's father has.

Hurry and update/reprint soon!
I bought this book for my parents to take with them on their first trip (50th anniversary) to Hawaii. I've been to Hawaii several times and have had several guide books. I love this one the best. It it easy to read, larger print than some of the guide books, written so that it is entertaining to read. What I love the best is that every page has side bar lists that rank the same things, i.e, most romantic restaurant, restaurants with ocean view, best breakfasts, etc. I came online to re-order myself one (since I keep borrowing my parent's gift back!), only to find that it is out of print. ...

Valuable--I hope it is reprinted soon
An outstanding overall guide to Hawaii--The best feature is a "quiz" which helps you decide which island(s) you will find most enjoyable. It has general advice on visiting Hawaii, how to get the best deals, etc., followed by a chapter on each of the major islands. It does not cover islands a new visitor is less likely to visit, such as Lanai and Molokai. The specific chapters on each island give useful coverage of major attractions or activities, and very detailed commentary on a limited number of hotels/resorts/B&Bs. I highly recommend the book, but once you have decided to visit, I recommend that you buy specific books covering the island(s) you want to visit. If you want to spend more than a few days on a given island, you will probably want more detailed coverage than given in this book. Despite this, the book is VERY valuable for a first-time visitor who wants to figure out the who, what, where, why and how of a Hawaiian vacation.

A Lifesaver!!
Very detailed and extremely helpful. Gives Island by Island details of where to visit and wonderful places to eat. I highlighted so much, you would have thought it was printed on yellow and pink paper!! A very good value and a must before you take your trip to the Islands!

Delicious, healthy, wholesome and inspiring!
From it's gently inspiring introduction, through intuitive and wise guidance for the foods to be eaten at certain moon phases and times of year, Cooking by Moonlight is a feast for body and spirit. The recipes are crafted with love and a wholesome attention to our physical requirements as well as our need for nourishment that tempts the appetite. Karri Ann Allrich?s approach is holistic: it is clear how well she understands the link between feeding the body and keeping the other aspects of our natures (mental, emotional and spiritual) functioning at their optimum. The explanations of the energies of the moon?s phases and the moon at different seasons are fascinating, as are the lists of food qualities in the chapter on love foods and practical magic. This book manages to combine nurturing and the indulgence of the senses without sacrificing well-being. The main body of the work contains page after page of gorgeous recipes, with something for everyone, whether they are vegetarian or ?omnivarian?. As I live in Europe, I especially appreciate the appendices giving US to UK conversions for ingredients, measurements and oven temperatures. Harmonious, generous, giving, this is a recipe book to treasure.
Elen Hawke: Praise to the Moon; In The Circle; The Sacred Round

Delightful to serve, and delicious to consume
The recipes comprising Cooking By Moonlight: A Witch's Guide To Culinary Magic are in balance with the seasons and in harmony with the phases of the moon. From Pesto Artichoke Hearts Baked in Parmesan; Orange-Walnut Scones; and Creamy Garlic Grits; to Maple-Pecan Roasted Squash; Strawberry Snow; and Blue Moon Berry Crisp, Cooking By Moonlight recipes are easy to prepare, delightful to serve, and delicious to consume. Of special value to Wiccans are the additional chapters devoted to "Love Foods and Practical Magic", "Using Herbs and Spices Magically", "Lunar Lessons and Moonlit Menus", and "Goddess-Worth Beverages".

A True Culinary Adventure
"Cooking By Moonlight" is one of the most original and delightful cookbooks I have ever experienced! The concept of preparing foods, according to the phases of the moon, takes the process to new levels, while focusing on the needs of the whole person ... mind, body, and spirit. Our western food culture seems to be dominated by unhealthy fast foods, as the simple pleasure of cooking with whole unprocessed ingredients, has become a lost art to so many folks. "Cooking By Moonlight" takes us on a journey of rediscovery, of the wonderful gifts Mother Earth has always had available to us.

The recipes in "Cooking By Moonlight" take us back to a time, when food was much more than a quick fix, to satisfy our hunger pains. While calling for fresh whole ingredients, Karri Ann Allrich has created a fabulous collection of recipes. She includes a shopping list, as to how to stock our pantries; which will enable us to create kitchen magic, to our hearts' desires. Also, she presents "a suggested list of easy-to-find herbs, spices, and flavorings for cooking by moonlight" (Allrich 33), which explains the spiritual/healing powers, of these ingredients, in addition to what foods are complimented by them.

"Cooking By Moonlight" teaches us to rethink food, and how it truly works into our lives. Indeed, food is something to be respected, savored, loved, and enjoyed. Karri Ann Allrich shows us the way, to once again, return to a place where food and the art of cooking, can be an uplifting spiritual part of our daily lives.

All Aboard
Life is full of missed opportunities. How many of us have lamented over that moment of hesitation when we didn't seize the opportunity to speak to an intriguing stranger or take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity? Fortunately there are also those serendipitous moments that can change the whole course of your life. For Missouri native, Ann Milholland Webb, that moment came when she stepped on the Connemara Bus in Galway City. Bus owner and tour guide, Hugh Ryan, offered Ann much more than a tour of the Connemara landscape and history. He provided a glimpse into a simpler time when his grandfather, Andrew Ferguson, used the original bus as a means for women, especially, to come to the city to sell their wares and visit the world outside the narrow confines of village life. For Ann the journey served several purposes, not the least of which was a means of coming to terms with the death of the major figures in her life, her husband and her father. In addition, she found a sense of belonging and acceptanace within the Ryan's close-knit family. Even more surprising, she found a sense of purpose in life and a reason to go on by developing a cottage industry in the Connemara countryside which benefits the local inhabitants. Travel along with Ann on this trip of healing and renewal in the Connemara Bus. It is a journey well worth taking.

The Connemara Bus
This is a superb work about greif bearing, roots, and the splendid man Mr. Ferguson. A look at the Connemara Region in times forgotten by many or rather unknown to more. A region of natural beauty not to be missed when you go to Galway. You will consider a tour on the Connemara Bus a bargain. If for no other reason, you will have had the company of Mr.Hugh Ryan, the driver, for an afternoon. Buy the book if you go or not. Ann Milholland has a lot to say in her first book.

A great book
I visited Galway, Ireland in June of this year and met Hugh and Annon the Connemara Bus which is now a tourist bus. They were great people.

I highly recommend this book to Irish Americans like myself who are interested in their ancestry and finidhing their relations.

Darkness of Dawn

Characters and Issues of Depth
I was captured by characters that inspire, questions that are timely if we are to create the future we want, and a land and culture that is timeless. A masterful work.

Enlightening and Exciting
The Kresny's have combined scientific and spiritual knowledge, with a strong dash of imagination and common sense, to craft a novel that is as enlightening as it is exciting.

Need for Balance
Hans and Ann Kresny bring new meaning to "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself" with their excellent word crafting of "Darkness of Dawn". They skillfully position you to experience a future where, in a fraction of an instant, life as we know it suddenly stops - the power plug is yanked out on the whole world and nothing works. The stoppage doesn't come from outer space invaders, or from an overheated greenhouse effect, or from some monster computer running wild - in fact, every computer has stopped and won't reboot ever again. Those fancy do everything smart chips are nothing more than cubes of worthless sand - and to make matters worse, humankind has brains that have turned mostly to cold mush. The majority of society has surrenered their individual abilities to do creative thinking, because all those collective computers apply the logic of sound reasoning to do almost all the thinking about things that need to be thought about and done. There's no need for mind control when the simple act of thinking through a problem can quickly be done for you - of course that was before the darkness came like a modern day black plague. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and the Kresny's depict people living in a future where their minds have gone barren of basic knowledge - knowledge is seen as being old fashioned, because anything you want to know is waiting in your computer. However, vast parts of basic knowledge are missing - like primary survival skills. Even in this dark mindless future, there are sparks of thoughts that come together to light anew the torch of learning as the olden ways of doing life become the dawn of a hopeful tomorrow. This futuristic page-turner is set in the beautiful Land of Enchantment that the reader can see with word pictures, and all the highly techno stuff is based on technologies presently in the early stages of development. The Kresny's have created a unique blend of spiritual myths that help to restore the balance which thoughtlessness has taken away. Their cast of players becomes real in this unreal world that's warped back in time -to a time when time is once again told by the sun and the moon.

Love thy neighbor
Excellent book! Tells of how much the Tories suffered along with the Patriots and how they were treated. Sad story, but very good. I didn't like Walter or Abigail, though.

Perplexing Questions about Loyalty
This Revolutionary War era novel is quite interesting, enthralling and raises many questions and feelings about loyalties to friends, family and country in a time of war. Tories were American colonists who remained loyal to King George and England despite the fact that the Thirteen Colonies were on a course of independence from the monarchy. The story is about a teenage girl whose family are Tories living in a rural community. Her best friend is from a family who is in favor of independence. Events threaten their friendship and the life of her family causing difficult choices to be made. I really enjoyed this thought-provoking book.

Another great, and rare, historical fiction!
"Love Thy Neighbor: The Tory Diary of Prudence Emerson, Greenmarsh, Massachusetts, 1774" was such a great story! I was a little weary when beginning this story, as I feared this Tory family would be betrayed as rich, snobby, and not as human's, as that is the assumption with Tories. Luckily, that was not the case. I was glad that a book was finally published with loyal British people and what they dealt with through their eyes. A must read if you've read, or been reading, books about the Patriots. I recommend.

This is one book that I would recommend to anyone!
Abby hates February, too hot for some things and too cold for others which is why she decides to help renovate dark woods to greenwoods . She finds out about a secret society at Dark woods and the death of a journalist who was looking into the secret society. Then it becomes more than a February distraction. I would recommend this book to all ages because it is not complicated and is easy to follow but i think it was a bit unrealistic at times.I would rate it 41/2. A great book on the whole.

Its the best mystery ever !
It was my seventh mystery read. The first 5 mysteries were just borrowed and the sixth one was the first I bought.I was discouraged by that, I never bought any mystery any more. But mom seemed to like it rather than the other books I read.So she gave me one for my birthday.I liked it because Abby and I both have asthma and a mom that works far from home. Idecided to collect as many as I can of these mysteries.I now have all up to mystery #28.I stareted collectin this since my birthday last month.

A Great Book!
This is one of the best books I have ever read, Abby and the rest of the BSC help at a club, and then the action starts. I thought they were mean not to let certain people get in. But the rest is O.K.!

Visit THIS Corner of the Universe

A Corner of the Universe is a book about a girl named Hattie Owen. She lives in her parent?s boarding house, along with Angel Valentine, Miss Hagerty, and Mr. Penny. Hattie is lives like a normal girl but is very shy and feels most comfortable in her own house with her own family. She lives a couple blocks down from her grandmother, who is well off and very controlling.
After her twelfth birthday, things start to turn a lot different from what she is use to. Her uncle, who lives in a medical home, comes to live with her grandparents unexpectedly. This confuses Hattie because she had no idea that her mother even had a brother. It seemed to her that everyone tried to keep Adam a secret and forget about him. So that very summer she becomes attached to him and seems almost break out of her shell. One of the surprising things that happened to her was a carnival came to her town. She went there several times and made her first true friend named, Catherine.
I really liked this book because it is an easy read and a very good plot. It is very similar to Ann Martin?s other books, which are equally good.
All in all, I rate this book 4 stars. The only things that I would change about this book, is to start the main story sooner. It starts out a little slow, but catches you in the end.

A fantastic novel...
Martin has written a truly beautiful story. If you loved "Winn-Dixie" and "Ruby Lavender" you will be moved by this novel, too. Hattie and Adam will touch your heart. A perfect mother/daughter book club choice. An excellent summer read, especially for girls 5th grade and up...and have the tissue handy.

A Touching Story
Hattie Owen is a 12 year-old girl who enjoys life just the way it is. Then before she knows, everything changes. An uncle she never knew existed comes to live with her grandmoter. His name is Adam, and he has "mental problems". At first,Hattie is not sure what to think about Adam, and then she grows to love him. As Adam and Hattie grow more fond of eachother, Hattie starts to think that she and Adam are a lot alike. One night she sneaks Adam out of her grandmother's house and takes him to the carnival. They ride the ferris wheel, but they ride gets stuck when they are at the very top. Adam cannot control himself, and opens the restraining bar and tries to jump out of the car. Hattie and her friend hold on to Adam's ankles for dear life. That is just one time whem Adam blows little things out of proportion. Later on, he gets really depressed and things get serious. To find out what happens, read "A Corner of the Universe" by Ann M. Martin. It will change your perspective on things and touch your heart.

Fun
This book is cute and fun to sing with my 17 month old. However, she really doesn't get to excited over it. The pictures are still a little boring to her and I sometimes have trouble keeping her attention with the book. I think she may still be a little young for it and hope she will become more interested in it as she gets a little older.

A pleasure to read
The sing-song rhythm of The Lady with the Alligator Purse makes it a blast to read to my four-month old daughter, and the pictures are adorable. Try also Miss Mary Mack from the same series of jumprope rhymes.

fun to sing
my 2 yr old loves this book. we have the words memorized and frequently act it out and sing it while in the car or shopping.
