The Oracle of Love, by Leeann Richards
The art of gaining insight into personalities, sitiuations and future predicaments through the use of playing cards is as old as civilization itself, but Leeann Richards new book The Oracle of Love brings a whole new aspect to this highly entertaining subject.
Witty, informative, easy to read, these pages are laced with deep perceptions of men and women, their vulnerabilities, their ambitions, and what makes them tick. We learn to probe beneath the surface of human nature. As well as being an excellent instructional guide, this book is funny. Leeann Richard's quotes and examples are so good, you know EXACTLY what she is describing in terms of feelings and reactions.
A wonderful read, a valuable tool, this book is worht its weight in gold.

Too much fun!
I loved this book. It was easy to navigate and the descriptions of the cards were much more fun than you would expect. Not just dry, dictionary stuff but lively and entertaining. This girl can write. I don't know for certain that any cards can tell the future but this book sure had some good thoughts about men and relationships and finding love. Pick it up, pop the cork and have a good hoot and holler. You might see things differently!

Insightful and Fun, Oracle of Love is a Great Find!
I've had the pleasure of using LeeAnn Richards' new book on a number of occasions. The Oracle of Love has proven to be a wonderful tool for myself and my girlfriends. It's incredibly easy to use. Richards offers several card spreads to choose from, so we've been able to tailor the book to our needs. Specific cards are siimple to find because of the easy-reference format used by the book. The advice given by the cards (via Richards' interpretation) has been amazingly insightful. In addition, the stories she tells both amuse and warm the heart. I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking to find out more about themselves and/or the person they're currently interested in. It's a real find.

An Effective Introduction to Ancient Egypt for Children
Written for children who are independent readers, Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt was, nevertheless, a fascinating introduction to Ancient Egypt for all my children. My younger daughter was in first grade at the time and needed some help with the reading, but the stories themselves were of great interest to her. It was fun for me to see all three of them learn about the Rosetta Stone and other archaeological discoveries, most of which I hadn't learned about until I was well past childhood. It's amazing what the children will find interesting when it comes wrapped in a story. Although some may regard the story-telling as somewhat fanciful (obviously we don't really know what most of these people really thought or felt), the author has succeeded in her quest to bring the attention of the reader into the context of the history she describes.
We bought this book along with the Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Eqypt, which listed it as one of its primary text for children's history. I recommend that book, along Tony Allan's Time Traveller Book of Pharaohs and Pyramids, if you are going to teach your children the history of ancient Egypt. The Greenleaf book helps you organize your children's study with questions and projects (along with recommended resources), while the well-illustrated Time Traveller book helps the children visualize what they're reading about.

a good introduction to Ancient Egypt, for children
In this book, the author examines the important discoveries and the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. She gives a description of the infamous Rosetta Stone, then continues with a brief history of the Ancient Egyptian civilization and religious beliefs. She also reports on the pharaohs and their accomplishments, including those of Akhenaton, Ramesses II, Cheops, Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. An interesting book for children ages 9 to 12.

Excellent introduction to Egypt!
This is a wonderful general introduction tot he study of ancient Egypt. Caution: This is really meant for grades 7 and up. The langauge is difficult for younger ones, even as a read-aloud. Also, the first chapter is mostly conjecture about the beginning of civilization in the Nile River Valley. You can skip it. Overall, it is fascinating reading.

Beautiful and insightful book.
This is a wonderful book, full of beautiful b/w images of dora, her photography/art and Picasso's work of her and more! It is really worth getting for your book collection, especially at this price, and it gives you an insight to Dora's life, I think she is fascinating woman living in a time when most photographer's were men. She is truely a pioneer and deserves more credit than being known as Picasso's muse. Very inspiring book.

Historical collections
Of some of Dora's photographs, and self portraits are a must have for any Dora fan. It shows her in her later years, it shows her paintings, it goes into detail about her love affair with Picasso as well. This is easily my favorite Dora book.

Dora mysterious, dramatic, definitely not only weeping
I would recommend this book to everybody. I am so delighted I purchased this book. It includes everything you need to know about Dora - her personal life before, during and after Picasso. I have always been interested in Picasso and by studying his life, I noticed all the fascinating women in his life. In my opinion, Dora was the one who made a big difference and who had a huge influence on him. Although it was Francoise Gilot, another woman in Picasso's life who gave him two children. Dora's own career and life as an artist (photographer, model, painter) is described in this book from the time she moved to Paris and tried to establish herself as a photographer.

You will not only find Picasso's portraits and drawings of Dora but Dora's own work (a lot of black & white photos taken by her that remind me of Man Ray's work). She truly was a talented artist. This is not often mentioned. Most of the people saw her mainly as Picasso's model and Muse. Dora was a very complex person full of emotions. She could be very dramatic in the way she looked and dressed. This all is revealed in this book. As I said, it has it all: Dora as a private person (Theodora M.) and Dora as an artist, the famous and remarkable Dora Maar. Trust me, with this book, you will get all the information you need. I consider this book a piece of art.

Proud to be a Dakotan
From her descriptions of the wind, to the grasses, to the hardships, Ann Daum captured South Dakota's reality on paper. Every chapter lends truths to the prairie and our lives here. Thanks, Ann.

This could have been my life
My life has many parallels to Ann Daum's; my life could have been hers. I grew up on a farm/ranch in central North Dakota, went out of state for college, came home to try to make a living, enjoy traveling and the wonders of the rest of the world, but am always drawn back to the northern Great Plains. Nowhere is the phrase "Hope springs eternal" better personified than in the lives of farmers and ranchers on the northern Great Plains. Daum captures this. Despite devastating losses of livestock, hail storms, floods and grasshopper plagues, farmers and ranchers believe next spring will be better, there might be a bumper crop and the next winter can't be so harsh. This hope strains marriages, finances and families. Daum also wonderfully and painfully captures the contradictions between the love of pets and baby calves and the war against predators and ultimate demise of all farm animals. I, fortunately, did not have some of the negative experiences that Daum did, but I saw them in others, heard of them and empathize. Walt Whitman wrote, "The Plains, while less stunning at first sight, last longer, fill the esthetic sense fuller, precede all the rest and make North America's characteristic landscape." Daum supports this statement. Anybody who enjoyed this book might want to read "Dakota: A Spiritual Geography," by Kathleen Norris. Also, for a different, more fact based, perspective of the Great Plains, "Where The Buffalo Roam: The Storm Over the Revolutionary Plan to Restore America's Great Plains," by Anne Matthews.

Praise for Prairie in Her Eyes
Minneapolis Star-Tribune Regional Round-up, June 24, 2001: "Daum's writing is lyrical, haunted by mortality, and so detailed you can almost feel the dust and heat. With great feeling, she captures a place where 'loneliness is just another disease.'"

Forward Magazine, July Issue: "This land, the prairie is not just in her eyes-it's in her soul in this slender but weighty first book."

Excellent and Interesting!
This was an excellent and interesting romantic suspense. Shane and Dani were great characters and the action takes place in the US, Aruba and Tibet. I love Ann Maxwell/Elizabeth Lowell's books they never disappoint and this one won't either!

A Must Read
This book was Awesome!!! I tried this book because I am a big fan of her books written as Elizabeth Lowell. I wasn't sure what to expect at first. As I read, I could not put this book down. It wasn't your average romance novel, it had a plot with suspense, along with many interesting characters. I would recommend this book to everyone. The two main characters, Dani and Shane were great together. This book was a great combination of drama, suspense, and romance.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC ! !
Impressive. Very impressive. Read it, and you'll see what I mean. I love the plot, the suspense, I love the characters - strong, powerful, intelligent, independent types.

comforting, healing book - for most but not all
For me, this is a very comforting and healing book. The little girl reminds me so much of myself - and her process is so familiar to me and I'm sure many who are healing from abuse and have disassociated during the process. The one thing I would mention is that it startled me a little that this book suggests integration may be necessary - while I know some people who feel that it's not necessary or even desirable for them personally.

"Think of what you want, not what you fear."
My Psychiatrist recommended this book to me and let me read his copy of it at the end of one of our sessions. At first I wondered what his motives were in suggesting I read a children's book, but after the first page I knew exactly why. The book was like a divine inspiration to me, helping me to struggle on and strive for the full integration of my "parts." As a child, I had numerous imaginary friends much like the friends who join the little girl during her journey through the woods. Some of them later became extensions of my self, and eventually, integral parts of who I am. I used to just want them to go away and leave me alone. After reading this book, though, I realize that I need them just as much as they need me and one day we'll all become one again. That was what I once feared, but now I know it's what we all truly want.

My personal review of The Silver Boat and the Silver Boat II
I was thoroughly touched by both books and was moved even more into a healing place from which I found strength to deal with my own dragons and all the help from inside to work together through a healing journey. I found that it was ok to have dragons and if one can work together you can get through anything. The books also taught me about a great place that you can go to inside where everything is calm and beautiful and safe where there is blue light, and you can even ride on a dolphin and find lightness of heart while dealing with the most troublesome areas of my life. I found you can create in your mind that great place to go to when things hurt so much, a place all your own. Found that even the most meanest dragons can be beautiful swans. These books helped me be ok with the healing journey I must face in order to become the person I want to be and that it's ok to be scared and confused and sad. I found that I can have fun and have feelings that are good and work on other issues at the same time and rely on my inner strengths to get through even the most troublesome times and find healing at last. The nice thing about these books is how well written they are and easy to understand and to be ok with what you must deal with. Yes while going through the forest there are many dangerous animals and yet you can find strength in the forest as well and beauty. These books helped me to see that and to go through this journey although painful and yet very calming while working together to all become beautiful swans and then you find you all were beautiful swans all along, some needed help to see it that way. The illustrations in these books are so colorful and meaningful.

Wonderful recounting of many important women
This book fills a glaring need in history books. Not many people know more about Susan B. Anthony than she was one the dollar coin. This book corrects that oversight, and then some. Not only does the book give a balanced and well thought out look at Anthony and Stanton, the reader is also introduced to many, many other women who worked so hard for women rights.
I especially liked that the book didn't shy away from some of these women's more controversial stands, such as taking on the black person's cause.
All in all, a very good book.

Every Woman should read this book!
This book provides insight and history on the struggle that women went through to get the right to vote. It includes all kinds of interesting background and perspectives. It was a real eye opener for me and I'm giving it as a gift to all the young women I know.

What every woman should know
This book was an eye opener for me. Every woman should read this book to understand the fight for our right to vote. These women devoted their lives to something they knew they would never even see in their live time! Its a story of courage and strength. It's makes one feel proud to be a woman.

PENETRATING PORTRAITS
What can a picture tell you about a person? The answer is quite a bit as you view these penetrating portraits of southern writers. A writer's tools are words to convey a story. Photographer Curt Richter uses his tools of lighting, mood, camera and the subjects themselves to reveal a visual story whose impact goes far beyond words.

Over a seven year period, Curt scoured the country taking pictures of those writers associated with the south. His labor was not in vain for he blessed us with outstanding visual views of these writers not seen before. These are not a compilation of formal studio portraits nor are they casual snapshots. You are given a series of sepia toned pictures whose faces, postures, hues and eyes that reveal something more about the subject that meets the eye.

Ralph Ellison looks like an elder statesman as he peers into the lens. Larry King appears to have a haunting quality as his off focus face gives us a smile. Eugene Walter looks like a supplicant in prayer or is he just fooling us? Let your mind and imagination decide as you see this wonderful display of southern authors. For those of you who are collectors of some of their works, you will be delighted with their pictures.

Robert Coles has written a foreward to the book introducing us into the world of southern writers and the culture of the south. Ann Beattie provides us with her observations regarding this collection through her afterword. Now relax, open this book and reflect upon these gifted writers of prose and poetry who have shared their wares with the world.

A Portrait of Southern Writers
I have never been so captivated by photographs that truly depict their subjects. I have seen other works by Curt Richter and he truly is the finest portrait photographer of our time. Congratulations on a sensational effort. It came at the right time of year because I am giving this book to all of my friends and family.

Outstanding, Magnificent Photography
It's so wonderful to see a group of photographic portraits that dispense with the current trend of the snapshot and at the same time have the courage not to follow a formula. The photographer is obviously aware of the history of portraiture occuring even before the advent of photography. As they say in "Fiddler on the Roof" -- "tradition." Thank God for some tradition. It seems so avant-garde. I throughly enjoyed the book.

Fantastic overview of psychology
Even if you're not enrolled in a psychology class, you may still want to read this text. Its lively writing style and reader-friendly interface make it easy for ANYONE to learn about how humans work. Although it lacks the cartoons and "wow" of Myers' text, I believe this is still one of the most authoritative psychology textbooks on the market.

Great Introduction
At my school we use this textbook for our AP Psychology class. It is very clear and understandable, a great introduction to Psychology.

I am delighted by this book.
First of all, I am a computer scientist and I picked this book without taking a course. I was reading books like "Your erroneous zones", "Too much control", "Do what you are" and some others like those, when I decided I wanted have a deeper understanding of psychology.

This book is great. I was first surprised to discover there was much more to psychology than Freud, Jung and the psychoanalysis. Just look at its table of contents.

1. The Science of Psychology.
2. The Biological Basis of Behavior.
3. Sensation and Perception.
4. States of Consciousness.
5. Learning.
6. Memory.
7. Cognition and Language.
8. Intelligence and Mental Abilities.
9. Motivation and Emotion.
10. Life Span Development.
11. Personality.
12. Stress and Health Psychology.
13. Psychological Disorders.
14. Therapies.
15. Social Psychology.

Reading this book helped me understand myself and other people, and it has a lot of sources. There was not a chapter I found uninteresting. A great buy.
