Putting Southwestern Cooking on the Map
With the second of his general Southwestern cooking recipe books, Mark Miller has joined the likes of superstar chef Bobby Flay in putting a region long misunderstood on our culinary map. In the early to mid 90's Mr. Miller helped develop our palets to appreciate gourmet where we used to expect less. This book will add fire and and great recipes to any chef's repertoire. It is a fantastic example of what a great cook book can be.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory companion book for Primary
This is a wonderful beginning chapter book for second-graders. We read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl as a read-aloud to second-graders at my school. This book is a great companion for more independent readers who enjoyed Charlie.... It teaches a valuable lesson about telling the truth and being honest while sharing an enjoyable story about a teacher who "re-creates" the chance at finding 5 golden tickets in some candy bars.

Meta Fitness (Audio Cassettes/221)

Dance Training-Style--Not for Beginners
As a trained dancer I found this tape to be quite familiar. (I've studied Modern Dance and Ballet for over 15 years, and have a B.A. in Dance from the University of California, Irvine)

As of January 2003, I've decided that I need to get back in shape after 13 years of no dance or exercise routine, so I dragged my Metafitness tape out to see if I could add it to my weekly repertoire of beginning step, beginning aerobics, bellydancing and yoga.

The first section features a warm up and exercise section with voiced-over body affirmations by Louise Hay, of Hay House. Ms. Prudden also explains what your body shape means metaphysically and how your thoughts and inner dialogue with yourself shape your body. I found the explanations interesting, while some of the voice-over affirmations confused me while I was trying to pay attention to the exercises.

The warm ups and exercises on "Metafitness" were very familiar to me, since most of my modern dance classes started out with similar warm ups and combinations. However, if you are used to the instructor telegraphing the next move or combination ahead, as Kathy Smith does in her starting out videos, you will be surprised to be left behind in the sequence. I managed to catch on quickly enough to see what Ms. Prudden was up to, but I could imagine those folks unfamiliar with dancer-type combinations to be stumbling through, and most likely quitting in frustration.

All that aside, I enjoyed getting back to "old modern dance favorites" such as body swings, side stretches, abdominal work, etc. I felt energized at the end. Her stretching cool down is calm and thorough. I didn't feel as rushed as I have from other aerobic videos, probably since this exercise tape is from a dancer's viewpoint and slow, relaxed stretches are important at the end of a dance class, when your body is very warm and the chance you might injure yourself is low.

With all of the above in mind, I would say that this tape is valuable in that it's focused on mind-body integration, how your mind shapes your body. You may want to watch it through one or two times before you start doing the moves yourself.

Miss Suzy's Easter Surprise

Another Miss Suzy story
This story features the same squirrel from Miriam Young's book "Miss Suzy". I loved Miss Suzy as a child and now enjoy reading the stories about her to my daughter. Miss Suzy is a very kind and compassionate squirrel. In this story she rescues a family of orphaned juvenile squirrels. Then she makes them easter baskets out of a easter hat she had been making for herself. The nicest gift she gives the little squirrels I will leave as a suprise. She is a happy, busy squirrel and is always thinking of others. I gave this book only four stars because I just love the original story "Miss Suzy", a bit more.

This author knows what she's writing about...
If you want a quick laugh, if you're wondering if your dog is the only one in the world that does those "strange things", then you need to pick up this book.
Accompanied by humorous cartoons, the text is simplistic but real. Take the cartoon of the dog smiling for example: taking nearly the whole page, we see a front view of a grinning yellow dog that makes us smile in return. Then, we read the text: "She smiles... when she's just about to throw up or sometimes when she's scratching." and we guffaw. It's so true!
I found myself going through this book and saying, hey, that's exactly what my Sasha does! It's good to know that we all have "The World's Best Dog!"

Wonderful fiction-- the female Harry Potter of my generation
Charnas really captures the imagination and inspires young adults to think in different and interesting ways. Reminiscent of city-themed "girl's novels," like _A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,_ this is about another young woman's coming of age-- but with a sorceress for a grandmother. It's a wild read, riveting to the very end, and is great for boys and girls alike. Action, adventure, mystery, and the supernatural all collide in Charnas' book, and here's hoping you can find a copy since they're out of print!

U. S. Supreme Court Coffee Table Book a Great Lawyer Gift
150 color photos are excellent. This coffee table book was assisted by a grant from Eastman Kodak, which translates into very high-quality photos of the interior and exterior of the U. S. Supreme Court, complemented by 50 pages of text. I've purchased a number of these over the years for my clients, who are lawyers. They've enjoyed the books and kept them prominently displayed in their offices or homes.
