Excellent and authoritative account of Africa's vultures.
"The Vultures of Africa" is a comprehensive guide to the eleven species of vulture found on the continent. This book covers not only the natural history and behavior of the individual species but looks at the group as a whole. In addition, comparisons and contrasts are made between the species. The interrelationship between vulture and man is also covered as well as conservation issues which concern these birds. A high informative book on the subject and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in these unique birds.

A drop-dead gorgeous book
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. I wish they would have given details on the printing process for this book. I've never seen such vibrant, sharp, photographs in a book. They look almost as good as professionally done prints on photographic paper. As for the artistic merit of the photographs themselves, they are wonderful, something to get lost in.

The Complete Whitetail Autumn
As an avid hunter, I bring to the table over 15 years of experience. I can truly state that this book is complete with the whitetail's rutting period. Everyone...hunter or conservative will enjoy this book. With a complete history of the whitetail documented, J Ozoma, next to J Kroll, is the expert. My experiences in the field copies word for word what this book exeplifies. 5 stars is not enough. Excellent pictures of the life of whitetails. I can not wait to obtain the next 3 books in the series.

A fine tree book for a wide swath of the West
Wild Trees of Idaho is, in completeness and competence, one of the best state tree books available in the U.S. But because Idaho's flora has affinities to the boreal forests to its north, the Pacific Northwest rainforest, the Great Basin, Rocky Mountains, and Great Plains, this book is a must for tree enthusiasts from all of Idaho's neighbor states and Canadian provinces as well. More than an identification guide (though a good example of that genre), Wild Trees opens with a broad account of how Idaho's forests evolved over the last hundred million years; and an ecological essay on its present-day vegetation communities. Idaho's sylvan richness, including its many introduced naturalized species, make for a varied array of broadleaved and coniferous species. Each receives a page of text and one of black/white illustrations. There is an 8-page color insert containing brilliant photos of 78 species. Key identification characters are stressed, as are locations in Idaho where noteworthy specimens of each species can be seen, data on the largest Idaho specimens, and generally very reliable natural history information. The writing style is folksy and accessible, yet technically of a high level. This book has a lot to teach.

Feels like you're there.
John Muir is simply the best naturalist writer I have ever read. His writing is clear, descriptive and interesting. I typically don't like this type of writing, but his essays make you hear, see, taste and smell the outdoors. I usually like to experience nature directly, but Muir is the next best thing to being there. A collection of his best works is presented here.

Wildflowers of Houston and Southeast Texas
I had to have this book!!! I really enjoyed the beautiful pictures, even thought a lot of these wildflowers are actuallly considered a weed in the Houston and surrounding areas. I've lived in this area and never really knew the names of the flowers and found this book very helpful. It also will let you know which plant is poisonous and which is edible. And it is about the size of a field guide.

An exceptional work, even if dated.
This book was published in 1979, and is now out of print. I seldom recommend such books, especially in a fast-changing area of science. An exception lies here.

This book is about Ice Ages, from the Pre-Cambrian to the present. Although some of the text is outdated, such things as the Atlantic conveyer current not yet having been theorized when this text was published, I wouldn't be surprised if it is still regarded as a valuable instruction tool.

Brian John should be commended for having compiled an easily read, yet encyclopedic, text of all relevant aspects of this area of science as of 1979. The photgraphs, although in black and white format, excellently depict the concepts being discussed. Some are classics.

The book's remarks about the dissolution of the latest Quaternary ice sheets remain timely in light of the current controversy over the status of the West Antarctic Ice sheet and its ice shelves. Equally of great value are the discussions and photos concerning the formation of such post-glacial features as outwash plains, (sandur), eskers, kames, and roche moutonees.

I highly recommend this book to any student of glaciology or Ice Ages. Indeed, I do not believe a library on such matters without this book is complete.

Wonderful!
A great book and a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Yosemite. Rowell's photographs are wonderful, and are set to John Muir's observations and memories of the Valley.
