Poetry in Prose
This book is a treasure. Mr. Van Dyke obviously has the soul of a poet, and within his graceful prose he paints vivid and soul-stirring pictures of some of the most beautiful places on earth. He describes in fine detail observations he made on a long trip, on horseback in 1898/99, over, around, and through the lower deserts of Arizona and California. He leaves no stone unturned as he describes the magnificence and beauty of each aspect of the desert, and pulls no punches in his criticism of man's destructive intrusions. To Van Dyke, the play of light and shadow, the star-pocked night skies, the ragged and jagged ranges of mountains, the perfectly adapted plants and animals, the sometimes shifting sands, and the silent river barrier known as the Colorado are each part of the unique sum which is, in its own harsh and angular way, a paradise of color, form, and life: "The Desert."

Speaking as one who has lived on and wandered through this same desert for nearly forty years, I can attest to the accuracy of Van Dyke's physical descriptions and, perhaps more importantly, I can note that I've found here both the magic and the majesty which he so ably describes. Still, this isn't a book for everyone. Those who prefer the gleam of glass towers and the roar of jet planes to flaming sunsets and yapping coyotes, save your money. Van Dyke wrote, "Not in the spots of earth where plenty breeds indolence do we meet with the perfected type. It is in the land of adversity ... that finally emerges the highest manifestation."

He was right, and he leaves us "The Desert" as evidence.

An awsome book!
I have read this book and it is awsome! It was very informative and helped me with raising my young axolotl. I found a lot of things that can harm axolotls, some things that I have been puting in the tank. So if you want your axolotl to live long than you should buy this book.(My axolotl is going on his 7th year!)

A unique presentation of the original journal entries
Discovering Dinosaurs In The Old West: The Field Journals Of Arthur Lakes, deftly edited by Michael F. Kohl (Amateur paleontologist, Head of Special Collections at the Clemson university Library, and the discovered of Lake's missing journals) and John S. McIntosh (Emeritus Professor of Physics, Wesleyan University and a paleontologist specializing in sauropods), is a unique presentation of the original journal entries from 1877 to 1880 by geologist Arthur Lakes and presented with numerous annotations, clarifications, maps, black-and-white photographs and a great deal more. Enhanced with an informative foreword by John Ostrom (Professor Emeritus of Geology and Geophyiscs, Yale University) Discovering Dinosaurs In The Old West is a superbly presented and invaluable addition to personal, professional, and academic paleontology supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

I discovered moths!
As an avid butterfly watcher and birder, I couldn't help but notice the occasional moth while on my forays. I always found them interesting, and even picked up an old field guide to begin to learn them. While doing an internet search for moths, I discovered Mr. Himmelman's book and ordered it.

It arrived in the morning and by early evening I had read it cover to cover! Good thing it was a Saturday - Wow! While the topic is of moths, Himmelman could have been writing about any creature. His curiosity is contageous and he is a comfortable, and often humorous, guide to have accompany you through this topic. I feel like I know him.

I also love the line drawings sprinkled generously throughout (one shows godzilla going after mothra) and his beautiful photos! To the best of my knowledge there is no other book out there (I looked) that treats the "nightime jewels" with such passion, humor, and out and out information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in nature.

Simply the best guide to the fish of the Red Sea available
For years those of us diving in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf have used this book as the standard for fish identification. One of the real advantages of this book is that photos are used rather than drawn pictures. The information about each species is delivered in an easily digestible format making the book accessable to the non specialist. If you are going to dive in the Red Sea you have to have this book !

This interesting and informative book can save your life!
Dr. Frank Field tells why more Americans die by fire than any other nationality - we don't know nearly as much about fire as the rest of the world! We believe things about fire that are not true, and that cause needless damage, pain and deaths. WHY IS THIS BOOK OUT OF PRINT? It deserved to be in every library in the world, and in every home as well. (I speak as a professional safety consultant - I found this the best book of its kind ever written.) This book is worth whatever it costs you to get it. I recommend it wholeheartedly. William Foss, ZEE MEDICAL SERVICE - Santa Monica, California.
