One of the best books on butterflies in recent years!
A thorough treatise of all species known to occur in Ohio. This book should be of interest to anyone interested in butterflies and skippers throughout the region. The section on the history of butterfly research in Ohio is rich and without equal. A fabulous resource and an entertaining read
This is an excellent choice for any butterfly enthusiast. John Acorn, host of the television series "Acorn the Nature Nut" (my favorite TV show), provides a valuable and entertaining resource for all nature nuts. Don't let the title fool you - many of the species covered are wide-ranging and I find the guide useful in Georgia as well. Some of my favorite features of the book include the beautiful photographs of live specimens, tips on butterfly watching and photography, gardening for butterflies, and how to catch and release butterflies without hurting them. It also includes anecdotes from the author about how he found many of the species he photographed for the book. It is written in a conversational style without sacrificing scientific accuracy. A must-read!

A book for all naturalists
The most perfect book about butterflies in a specific region ever made! It contains the latest information about all butterflies in Canada and it is well illustrated with 32 great colour plates covering all species (I think). This is the only book you need about butterflies in Canada.

Simply Superb
This is one of the best presented field guides I have ever seen. Each and every species of Florida butterfly is pictured and described. Most butterfly guides I've seen use pictures of preserved specimens in a collection. This can be confusing because parts of the wings normally hidden are exposed when the collected specimen is mounted. This book avoids this problem by using only pictures taken in the wild (except for a few rare species). No more unnatural poses!

The text is easily readable without extensive knowledge of obscure scientific words and has enough humor to keep it from getting dry and technical, but not so much that it overpowers the book.

This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in Florida butterflies.

If you love Chesapeake Bay, this is your book.
If you live on, near or visit and love Chesapeake Bay you should read this engaging and informative book. A collection of John Page William Jr.'s columns from "Chesapeake Bay Magazine," the book walks you through a year on the Bay and it's surrounding country. Once you've read it, you'll be amazed at how it sharpens your view of what is going on around you on or along the water. This is a book for anyone who enjoys the Bay in any way -- boating, camping, cottaging, or just sitting by the waterside on a quiet afternoon with a line in the water. Highly recommended!

A delight for the senses
From the dust jacket: "This beautifully illustrated book first appeared in 1860 under the illustrator's own imprint...the intention was to produce a volume of reference for the field botanist, the country resident or the summer rambler."

This slightly oversize (8" X 11 1/2") book contains 1,600 varieties, all shown in delicate color illustrations. Included are Latin and common names, description, normal size, habitat, and time of flowering.

This book is truly a delight and will "evoke, perhaps, almost-forgotten days of lost tranquillity."

backyard nature-lovers, unite!
What an incredible book, I read it in 2 sittings, and missed it in between. For anyone who loves the outdoors, but has not been able to view much more than whatever appears out of the local shrubbery, this is the book for you!!! (Also for anyone who just loves animals). The habits, quirks, characterisitcs and even threat or endangerment to the inhabitants of almost every neighborhood: squirrel, skunk, deer, rabbit and others!!!! Actual stories about people's encounters with these animals, as well as a little information about how they are thriving as we expand our homeland into what was once there.
