Islands in a Far Sea
Our first introduction to the Hawaiian Islands was in the early 1980's; since then we have been conducting research on the islands of Hawai'i and Kauai. Our long association with Hawai'i prompted us to develop a course: The Natural History of Hawai'i; taught by Jamie Deneris, Ph.D., College of Marin, Kentfield, California, and myself, Neil Marshall, Ph.D. College of Notre Dame, Belmont, California. This is a course that includes island biogeography, evolutionary biology, and the geology of oceanic islands. Our text is John Culliney's book, Islands in a Far Sea. This is a wonderfully, scholarly, but eminently readable book. It captures the essence of the geologic and biologic evolution of the Hawaiian Islands, presents the key points of island biogeography, and finally the impact of human activity. A fine book; this needs to be reprinted in a new edition.

A Masterpiece of Nature Writing
Anyone looking for a chronicle of the American wilderness in its infancy would do well to start here. There is great charm in the journals of 1820, where the spellings are still Audubon's own, and the flavor of the times -- especially regarding life on the frontier, and concerning everyday life in old New Orleans -- is everywhere. With his "Bird Biographies" of everyday varieties, as well as descriptions of now-extinct species, such as the Carolina Parakeet, and Ivory Billed Woodpeckers, this book is a treasure not just for nature lovers and bird aficianados, but for lovers of history as well.

entertaining book on Australian animal behavior
Written by American biologist John Alcock (along with excellent illustrations by Marilyn Hoff Stewart), this book chronicles Alcock animal observations throughout the land Down Under. Alcocok observed the intimate details of the birth, breeding habits, feeding habits, and sometimes death of a large variety of Australian birds, insects, and mammals. Each chapter devoted to a particular species, he covers not only well known species such as the kookaburra, flying fox, and platypus, but lesser known ones (at least to Americans), such as the northern logrunner, resin wasp, and silver gull.

Alcock not only covers the life habits of a number of species, but also during the course of the book, using these species as examples, explores many concepts in biology. Why do birds sing so early in the morning? Are marsupials really primitive and not able to compete with placental mamamls (such as dogs and horses)? Particulary interesting are his speculations on adaptations on animals. Do all the features of an animal, from the cooperative efforts by grey-crowned babblers to raise a brood of young to the red tail feathers in the otherwise black red-tailed cockatoo all surve useful purposes in species (and individual) survival and were the results of evoultion, or is it wrong to atttribute every feature and behavior an animal to direct survival of individuals and the production of new offspring?

A highly worthwhile and readable book, I recommend it.

Glorious Genus of Lilies
I really don't see why this book should be out of print ! It's an a-z of one of the most interesting plant families there is. Along with the historical and botanical description of the lilies and related families come beautiful colour prints of the plants mentioned. These were instrumental in hooking me onto the worship of these beautiful plants. To this day, I dream of going to Japan to find a wild specimen of L. brownii..all because of this book! So start up the printing machines, please!

1st guide to mammals
I bought this book in California when I went in November 99 and even though I didn't actually use it there I found it very useful for identifying animals I'd seen before. At the back of the book is a card with the most common and recognizable species of mammal and page numbers so if you see an animal, you can look at this card and find out what it was and confirm your identification in the book itself. Although a beginner's guide (it doesn't feature many other North American mammals that other field guides do) but it simply shows the most common ones that you're likely to find out in the field. I give this book 5 stars.

Excellent!!
Hamilton and Wittaker's Guide to Mammals of the Eastern United States is an excellent book. It allows one to become familar with species of mammals and those that are related to them. The diagrams and pictures are very useful. The text is very complete and leaves nothing out. The key at the beginning of the book allows those that are no very familar with mammals to get a head start in finding out what the mammals they are looking for is. I highly recommend this book to amateur and experienced mammologists.
