A Soldier's Life
These letters are a rare glimpse into a soldier's thoughts during WWII. Pieces of history, many forgotten are brought to light. Experience a pass to Paris, how wonderful after months living in the field in the cold and mud. A simple watch was one of the few items this man requested from home. That his letters, often written from the battle field were delivered home and responses returned is a wonder of army mail service. The photos of home and family and notes from the author, the letter writer's brother enrich the book and add perspective. Highly valuable as a teaching tool for students. The book is short and hard to put down until you've gone cover to cover.

Audubon's Rocky Mt. States Field Guide: A great buy
As with all of the National Audubon Society's field guides, the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Rocky Mountain States" is a most worthwhile purchase, perfect as a gift or for your own collection. The guide is durable and very portable, which makes it well suited for use in the outdoors. More importantly, it has excellent content. Despite its small size, the field guide contains a wealth of information. In addition to the usual focus on flora and fauna species, there is information on constellations, parks, ecosystems, and more. While the depth and detail of the information in the various sections is not vast, the breadth of subject matter more than makes up for this; the information presented is ideal for a general field guide. Moreover, the book is beautiful, filled with gorgeous color photographs. Residents of the Rocky Mountain states and non-residents will both love it.

The whole family loves this book.
We have the Oceans and Jungles books in this series and I want them all. My 2 year old son adores them. He finds new animals all the time and likes to hear all about them. I think the books are great because they combine the fun of a flap book with the mystery of a puzzle. They are beautiful to look at and lots of fun. I wish they'd come back in print, though I imagine they are expensive to manufacture. We think they're worth it!

Entertaining, knowlegeable reading.
I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot in the process. Read at the right time in a person's life, it could cause them to become a geologist/volcanologist, etc.

A "MUST" if you love PALMS
Although this book offers a complete breakdown of the description of the palms in only a way that a scientist or botanist could enjoy, the pictures and the notes are outstanding. The only thing missing is the low temps that the palms will endure. But that is something we'll have to aquire and grow on our own to find out that answer. I borrowed this book but it is now on my short list for Christmas.

A must for dedicated Asiafiles!
The main character is a Canadian expat living in Bangkok who has almost, but not quite, "gone native". While the story line is excellent, what I find fascinating is the ancillary cast of characters and sub-plots, which move through Bangkok as the economy is beginning to spiral upwards (the book was written in 1988). Hookers, corruption & a business trip to Laos are all included in plot and dealt with extraordinary expertise on the topical subject matter.

Read this novel first and then follow up with Christopher Moore's "Gods of Darkness."

Lossing's Field Book of the American Revolution
In the 1840s Benjamin Lossing visited the site of almost every event of the American Revolution. His resulting 2 volume "Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution" has never been surpassed for historical accuracy or general readability. Lossing made the Revolution come alive through his interviews with aging veterans & patriot ladies, many of whom guided him over the battle sites, locating points of interest. Lossing's vivid descriptions & woodcut sketches of battle sites and historic homesteads, many since destroyed, are invaluable to later students of the Revolution. Lossings work is living history, filled with first-person accounts & anecdotes from surviving eyewitnesses & descriptions of colonial artifacts recovered before the era of archeologist & land-developer. Despite a tendency to pontificate on everything from religion & temperance to race & culture (he is a product of Empire Era America), Lossing's work is lucid, accurate, and pleasant reading.
