howl at the moon
hop up and down in your Teva sandals. Wade the great streams as they roar over round stones down from ancient peaks... dance the silver dance of the wild rainbow... but find a place in your ultralight backpack for this book. It deserves a place next to that bag of peanuts, your titanium cup; worth its weight in gold dust from the river, split pea soup from the pouch. Ancient shaman tales and woodcut journeys... yambushi of the mind, and lots of white space for taking your own cryptic outerspace trailnotes...

A Hive of Bees
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (1987)
Author: John Crompton
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $2.23
Collectible price: $8.47
Average review score:

Real Science in digestible form
Neither a dry, boring scholarly text or a fluffy, detailess overview, this book takes you into the world of the honeybee. Like all of Crompton's naturalist books, there is no theory or moralising here, just engagingly written descriptions of the author's own observations. Even though he had no formal training (being an Imperial soldier by trade) in writing or natural history, Crompton's texts have stood the test of time far better than the works of the so-called "experts" of his day. I do not hesitate to recommend this book to readers of any age, regardless of whether they are disgusted or fascinated by insects.

The Hunting Wasp
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (1987)
Authors: John Crompton and Stephen J. Bodio
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $4.95

Unexpectedly fascinating and witty.
You would never expect that a book about wasps could possibly be interesting, if you think bugs are disgusting little critters for which Raid is the best tool of study. That's what I thought until I happened to leaf through Crompton's little volume. To my amazement, he made the strange world of these beasties fascinating. And he has a wonderfully witty way of describing them in semi-human terms. They're even more disgusting than I thought they were, but he opened my eyes to an extraordinary part of the world around me. A Disney world, it isn't. More like a Stephen King world. But his sense of humor makes it all bearable. Tree-huggers and condo inmates, read Crompton or be stung by ignorance! -- Tom McDonough

A beautiful, touching, and disturbing book.
New Mexico, and the Taos area in particular, has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. John Nichols captures this beauty perfectly in his first of the Taos series, "If Mountains Should Die." Accompanied by heart-grabbing photographs, this book describes his first few years in Taos as a transplanted East-Coaster. Nichols not only captures the raw beauty of the land, but also the people that occupy it. Along with this, he describes the disturbing and continous struggle to keep it alive and free from suburbanization. His personal and touching accounts of his own struggle with the place and the people bring it alive in unexpected ways. There is also plenty of respect here, along with a deep anger for what is being done to the land, the people, and the unique way of life found in Taos Valley. As this is a very special place in my heart, I found it easy to cry and laugh along with him.

Fabulous, witty, insightful
I thoroughly enjoyed this intersting, thought provoking book from John Alcock. His thoughts on the modern American lawn should be required reading in the suburbs. The world would be a better place if all would read and comprehend his thoughts on connecting ourselves to the myriad wonders that go on all around us every day.

The one piece of nature writing you must have.
John Hay's "In The Company of Light" is a book that you will read over and over, finding new insight into the wonders of the natural world each time. Hay is the Dean of Cape Cod nature writing and his verse is never more inspiring as in his latest book, released in the year of his 82nd birthday. Hay chronicles the timeless natural mysteries that the seasons bring outside the door of his summer home in Mid-coast Maine and to the former "worthless woodlot" on Cape Cod where he lives for the remainder of the year. Like Henry Beston's "The Outermost House" this book celebrates the cycles of the solar year and its stunning hallmarks. Whether he is writing about the company of swallows nesting in his barn in Maine or the strange glow emanating from the mushrooms in the woodpile on Cape Cod, Hay speaks for the reader's unarticulated awe for and love of the multitudes of life forms with whom we share the planet. This book is the one piece of nature writing, above all others, that you must have in your collection.
