Needed account of reproductive history
Roberts, a Rutgers law professor, examines the sociopolitical reproductive history of black women--concluding this group did and still faces disparate treatment in public policy. The combined impact of race/ethnicity, sex and ecconomic status govern black women's relation to their own bodies--and treatment from policymakers and medical personnel.

While this premise has been previously examined by other scholars, Robert's contribution differs in legal analysis of the state/women relationship specifically as it applies to black women. She also faults fellow feminists for their ignorance, silence, and apathy towards black women's unique reproductive rights.

Begining with a critique of the predominantley white pro-choice movement for preoccupation with white middle class women and the assumption reproductive access means the same thing for all groups, Roberts holds black women's fertility is only valued if a predominantley white society can find ways to benefit from it.

She also notes that illegal abortion took the highest tolls on low-income black women who were unlikely to have the financial and political clout of rich white women to convince doctors to perform theraputic abortions in secret. At the same time, abortion should not be the sole issue of a truly progressive reproductive rights movement because coercive sterilization and contraceptive programs are also painful incidents in black women's reproductive history.

The pro-choice movement should oppose reccent 'welfare reform victories' because of the destruction such punitative measures have on black communities. Although most recipients were and continue to be white, policy debates were flooded with inferred images of the black "welfare queen" to foster and exacerbate racial and class tensions within the most conservative industrialized nation in the world.

Because anything else repeats the very conditions she is seeking to eliminate, a truly progressive reproductive policy supports the rights of all women to control their own bodies. Not enough to perform "multicultural" outreach, all feminist reproductive rights groups must fully intergrate a multi-pronged, class concious approach into their mission statement and policy objectives.

This book is an indispensible text for a social science course on reproductive rights, law, and/or social policy, but should be read by all who are concerned about securing freedom for all.

Amazing Book!
We all know about the plight of black men in society, the mainstream white society doesn't know about the plight of black women and their role in demonizing us by controlling our reproductive capacities and by destroying black families. Black women have long been stereotyped as breeders of unwanted children, matriarchs, and amoral jezebels. It's time for society to stop seeing blacks as problems and to start finding solutions to the growing poverty, lack of insurance, and family breakdown among blacks by assisting them economically, not by punishing black women's reproduction.

I want to thank Ms. Roberts for having the guts to say what was on her mind in her book.

Excellent...should be required reading for all!
I am fortunate to have picked up this book at a local feminist bookstore. This book taught me an abundant amount of information regarding the complex connections between reproduction, gender, and race in the United States. Starting with slavery, the author takes the reader all the way through to the present. Unfortunetly not much has changed since then. Society continues to control the reproduction of black women in order to keep the status quo of white male power structures alive and well. The most difficult chapter for me concerned the eugenics movement and forced sterilization. I knew this occurred but was not aware of how systematic it was. Who knows if doctors really stopped sterilizing black women without their consent in the 1970's as the author stated? I wouldn't be surprized if this practice continues. I had to have a couple drinks to process that chapter.

No longer can I hide behind ignorance of these events.

Great photos of hand painted china
Nice for studies and examples of others work but value is underpriced. One must consider the value to the person collecting the china.

Extensive, expansive, educational
A must-have for collectors and antique dealers alike. This book details the history, production, and decoration of American handpainted porcelain, all with beautiful photographs and helpful illustrations. A key component is the identification and valuation of handpainted items.

Indispensable for handpainted porcelain collectors.
Even though I had been collecting since 1984 I discovered how much there is to know about the subject. Full of history, insights, examples and references, plus beautiful format and photograpy.

Brilliantly written!
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Wedding" but "The Living is Easy" is brilliant. Cleo is excellently portrayed....the kind of person that you want to hate but you can't help but admire her determination to attain her goal. Dorothy West skillfully reveals to us the inner woman of Cleo and we see that she is not so cold-hearted but has her share of hurt, pain, vulnerability etc. Her way of dealing with her emotions which to her is a weakness, is incredible. Her anguish when her husband leaves is the most revealing because she has become dependent on his strength.
The story deals with the universal problem of skin color and status in an upper-class society...this ongoing problem brings about such a sadness....such a waste of energy.....will it ever go away?

One great story
The main character has little feeling and reading about how she came to be that way was great. The entire plot was wonderful, cleanly written with nothing left hanging and Cleo was endearing but maddening. The author's description of the era and township was flattering and understandable. You will never forget Cleo.

Three-dimensional characters in an intriguing story
I read this book months ago and it stayed with me. Her characters are fully drawn, not two-dimensional caricatures. The writing displays all sides of this complex heroine and her ultimately devastating impact on everyone associated with her. Also, a fascinating look into a society not portrayed elsewhere.

Dorothy Keddington
Dorothy Keddington is not only intelligent, she's a talented and entertaining author. She is able to draw you into the storyline from the very beginning, making it almost impossible to put the book away, even after you've finished it. After every Keddington novel I've read, I'm always left wanting more. Unfortunately Dorothy hasn't written very many novels, so I am left to reread the ones she has. But for those few I am extremely thankful.

A superb debut collection.
Marrow Of Flame superbly debuts the poetry of Dorothy Walters in a compilation of 105 new poems documenting and celebrating her talents at revealing deep and enduring spiritual truths and metaphysical observations. The God's Abode: Some say the god lies coiled/at the base/of the slender tree,/serpent waiting to/raise his head.//Other seek/rapture in the belly,/hands curving over navel.//Still others/would find a quiet opening/into heart or forehead,/imploring gift of compassion,/jewel of knowing.//The god is/all around us,/and in us.//As light pours through water,/she enters us.//We are her translucent vessel,/container and contained.

sober ecstasy
I can't recommend these wonderful moving ,poignant, poems highly enough. They encourage and inspire and elevate and seduce the soul. They are ,without exception, beautifully constructed and harmonious.Anyone wanting some fresh water for their spiritual thirst need look no further.

I loved this book. I recently wrote to the author, Dorothy, to tell her how I loved her books. I asked how to obtain all 5 books she has written. She informed me know that by the end of May, four will be in print through Granite Publishing. I can hardly wait! "Flowers in the Wind" will be coming sometime between April and May. "Shadow Song" was just released. If you want "Mermaid's Purse" write to her! Happy reading!

Wonderful Study Bible
The NKJV Women's Study Bible is a must-have for all women who wish to be closer to God. Written by women for women, you'll find this Bible beautifully written and an excellent study aid.

Spiritual Food
The Woman's Study Bible leads with the words" Opening the WORD of GOD to WOMEN", I cannot define it better. I have found that I am able to develop a relationship with the LORD. It has helped me to open a once closed heart jaded by our times. We do not always want to discuss with others certain issues as we may feel isolated. All these issues have been addressed and have made it easy for one to dig deep within to stoke the fire of GOD in us. The topical notes are inspirational. I am blessed to have a diverse ethinc background. Still, this Bible spoke into my life, it will into yours.

A-Rate: Woman's Study Bible
This bible is in the New King James version and is more "readable" than other versions. In addition, the excerpts on the Women of the bible are superb. It gives in depth analysis of the women of the bible, and how to pattern your life as a Christian woman. Excellent.

Powerful
This entire series is powerful. The first historical fiction series I have read and I am HOOKED!

my review
In this sequel, we see our hero, Claes or Nicholas, thrown into the complex situation in the middle east. Will the Sultan take over Trebizond where he has been sent as consul for Florence? If anyone can find succes in such a venture, Nicholas is the person, and he does. He succeeds not only in his trading, he saves his people from the Turks and also his step-daughter, Catherine.

Once again, the author has written a masterpiece. We are thrown from Florence to the middle east with all its complexities, but all the time we are rooting for our hero and he makes us proud!

And to think I still have more books to enjoy! I can't wait...

Take a Magic Carpet to Trebizond!
Reading this book is like taking a magic carpet to a mystical place. Ms. Dunnett has the knack of taking her readers to whatever era and place in the world she chooses. In this book our Niccolo has matured somewhat but he still has some hard lessons to learn about how lonely it is to be a leader. He also has to learn that a true leader leads without his employees or friends knowing that that is what he's doing. In fact, these books of Niccolo could be used for demonstrating leadership. I'm surprised that no corporate videos have been made from them. This is a good book even though Niccolo fails to fascinate as much as Lymond does, but I don't think there ever can be another Lymond. I don't find the characters as likeable in this series for one, and Catherine is certainly no Philippa (at least not yet), but there is high adventure, intrigue and enough court gossip to keep anyone interested in the politics of the 15 century.

You will keep returning to Red Castle
This book is an exciting story of Melissa, who returns after many years to visit family friends in Wyoming. To find that the son of the family Jesse (whom she has loved since she was eight) is not married. The story shows how they find their love for each other through scary and trying periods on the vacation. And even inspite of the eleven year difference in age, they still are drawn towards each other.

My most favorite book
Dorothy Keddington enables you to live the story. Her descriptive words not only tell a story but allow you to feel like you are right in the story. "Return to Red Castle" has adventure, mystery and (my favorite) romance without all the implicit sexual details. Her description of the mountain scenery lets you visualize and feel you are a part of the hiking expedition. I have read it twice and will keep it to read again in the future. I like her style.

This is a great book!
This book is excellent. It made me laugh, cry and kept me on the edge of my seat with suspense. I would highly recomend this book.

Mrs Pollifax and the Whirling Dervish (G K Hall Large Print General Series)
Published in Hardcover by G K Hall & Co (1991)
Author: Dorothy Gilman
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $7.88
Average review score:

The holy man
Dorothy Gilman writes smoothly and plots excellently. I am certain that others have compared her to Agatha Christie. This story begins as Carstairs determines that a situation requires the presence of Mrs. Pollifax. He thinks that Emily Pollifax would be able to correct whatever lack of tact the CIA man, Max Janko, possessed. He feels that it would be dangerous for Mrs. Pollifax to know too much. The destination is Morocco. Some years ago Mrs. Pollifax volunteered to be spy. Before being called this time she ws beginning to fear that Carstairs felt she was too old to be of any further use. She agreed to go to Morocco the following day. She is successful in her mission to foil the attempts of someone making impersonations of persons promoting the interest of the Polisarios. In the course of her adventures she encounters a small boy, a holy man, the sufi or whirling dervish of the title, and a former superior of Carstairs. The holy man she encounters is someone who saved Carstairs from certain death when he was serving in the OSS during World War II.

An enjoyable Mrs. Pollifax adventure
Mrs. Pollifax travels to Morocco in the ninth book of this delightful series. She is asked to pose as the aunt of a crusty agent who needs a little smoothing around the edges. They are to travel around Morocco and ascertain that the seven members of an information chain are all legitimate and match the pictures which have been entrusted to Mrs. Pollifax. She does not enjoy traveling with her companion and soon discovers that he is not who he says he is. Political intrigue and murder rear their ugly heads and Mrs. Pollifax is soon running for her life, while trying to ascertain who she can trust and who is out to eliminate her. This book introduces the reader to some delightful new characters while developing those we've already met, particularly an elusive gentleman who is in the upper echelons of the CIA's administration. This is a delightful read!

Back to the old style!
After the disappointment of "Mrs. Pollifax and the Golden Triangle," Dorothy Gilman went back to the formula that works for the series with "Whirling Dervish." The story of Mrs. Pollifax traveling through a foreign land with a crusty agent makes for intrigue and comedy. A very enjoyable, exciting, quick read. Reminiscent in some ways of both "The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax" and "A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax."
