A notation and watch for this on television
The correct opening line of "My Romance" should be "My romance doesn't HAVE to have a moon in the sky" instead of "NEED to have a moon in the sky" as I incorrectly stated in my review here.

Also, in "Lady is a Tramp" I used the third person instead of the original first person usage to demonstrate the lyrics. The original "Lady is a Tramp" is written as "I get too hungry for dinner at eight. I like the theater but never come late....etc." I used the third person because it is the more familiar version.

AND AS A TESTAMENT to the timelessness of Rodgers and Hart's songs, listen to the current Ralph Lauren "Romance" perfume commercial. It features James Taylor and Carly Simon singing the opening and closing lines of "My Romance". It's a beautiful, heartfelt song nicely rendered by Taylor and Simon.

An important collection
Lorenz Hart is one of the finest lyricists in the history of American musical theater. He is largely responsible for elevating the process of writing lyrics into an art form. Before Hart, lyrics were usually trite and predictable with simplistic rhymes such as "I am blue, and so are you."

Hart wrote lyrics that are cerebral and sophisticated. His compositions are infused with wit and wisdom. He used complex rhymes. An example from "My Funny Valentine": "Your looks are laughable, unphotographable. Yet you're my favorite work of art. Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?"

Another example from "Bewitched": "I'm wild again, beguiled again, a whimpering simpering child again...." And yet another example from "Lady is a Tramp": "She gets too hungry for dinner at eight. She likes the theater but never comes late. She never bothers with people she hates. That's why the lady is a tramp."

Hart could be wistful and romantic as in "My Romance": "My romance doesn't need to have a moon in the sky. My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by. No month of May. No twinkling star. No hideaway. No soft guitar."

Hart's lyrics are consistently observant and very often ingenious. They are the perfect match for the variety and intricacy of Richard Rodgers' superb music.

When you read through this collection of Hart's compositions, you will realize why this diminutive, gifted and endearing artist is a true giant of the musical theater.

A valuable document on many levels
Very few collections of lyrics are worth reading as literature. First there was W.S. Gilbert, who showed the way that intelligent lyrics need not be anathema to a light-hearted musical; and whose lyrics can stand as independent poems. Afterwards we had P.G. Wodehouse, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Ira Gershwin--and the best of 'em all, Lorenz Hart.

Not only is what he says witty but how he says it is even wittier. There is no room here to give examples of his incredible rhymes. But turn to the single example of "To Keep My Love Alive" which might be the very last set of lyrics he wrote before a lifetime of alcohol finally took its toll; and then compare it with any Gilbert's "list" songs to see the genius of this artist.

On an other level, any student of psychology will pounce upon the self-lacerating images conjured up in his "love" songs. Because of his own physical problems, we have "My Funny Valentine" in which the love object is "less than Greek" with a chin that's a little weak. And being in love is little more than "broken dates" and "flying plates."

His out and out parodies rival Cole Porter's, as witness "Way Out West on West End Avenue" with its kitchen range and so on. And all this is helped by his "signature" trick of breaking up words in the middle to get rhymes like "Summer journeys to Niagra/ And to other places aggra-/ Vate, all our cares."

On the level of Broadway musical history, the value of this collection speaks for itself, especially with the fine photographs and annotations about every show and then every song within the show. A scholarly masterpiece.

So how come you don't have a copy?

David's recipes
I recently order "Cooking for David) and find it the best and most informative cookbook regarding renal disease cooking. The recipes are encellent, easy to make, and provide a variety of selections. The cookbook is so good that I ordered one for my daughter-in-law because she keep asking for the recipes. Since my husband is going on dialysis, the recipes have prepared me in advance to be able to cook for him and provide him with good and balance meals. There are wonderful charts that let you know just what foods are good and which ones to avoid. I have read the book from cover to cover and its become my bible for cooking. I wish to thank these wonderful ladies for creating this fantastic cookbook.

Excellent cookbook and good renal guide
My mother recently started dialysis and I have been trying to find a good cookbook for her. I just got this one for her house and decided to buy another for my household. I have over 100 cookbooks and I could go through them and analyse the recipes I use, but this cookbook does all the analysing for me. It also stands on its own as a great cookbook with a balanced variety of recipes for breakfasts, dessert, main courses, etc. These are wonderful recipes: Hot holiday cider, horseradish spread with melba toast, breakfast sausage, frittatas, blueberry peach crisp, rice pudding supreme,Greek lamb patties with mint sauce, poached salmon with cucumber dill sauce, sweet and sour meatballs, shrimp scampi,Chinese fried rice, pasta primavera, spicy lemon pasta, Asian vegetable salad, crabmeat salad, cranberry orange ginger sauce, candied carrots and apples, deviled green beans, creamy cauliflower bake, and lots more

This book changed our lives!
This is a wonderful book.

For 6 years my mother, a kidney patient, has been preparing bland meals for herself. This year she moved in with us (family of five).
Since then, I have been preparing two meals at dinnertime--a bland one for her and the usual meal for my other family members. My mom felt guilty about my preparing two sets of meals and the other members of the family felt bad about eating their more tasty meals at the same time that she ate. I did not mind cooking two meals but it was difficult for me to co-ordinate the meals.
This book explains the renal diet very well and provides recipes for tasty foods all my family members like.
I especially appreciate the accompanying list of nutritional contents (including sodium, potassium, phosphorous) for each recipe.
I only wish we had known about this book before.

I absolutely NEED this book!!!
Yes!!! I MUST have it!!! I checked it out from the library years ago and I LOVED it!!! Thank goodness it's still available!!! I will buy it SOON!!!

Thank you Dorothy for such a GREAT book!!!

Can you tell that I am CRAZY (!!!) about this book?

Buy this book for great ideas!
Dorthy Bond has compiled a huge collection of embroidery stitches she's seen used in crazy quilts. She assumes you can learn how to do the stitches from other sources, although she provides a simple drawing of the steps for each basic stitch. The joy of this book is the wealth of combinations of those basic stitches. No other book on crazy quilt embroidery has offered me the same trigger to creativity that this book provides. It is spiral bound, ensuring that it will lie flat while you work from it. A great collection at a truly bargain price.

Excellent Crazy Quilter's Stitch Resource!
Crazy Quilt Stitches" is a comprehensive survey of stitch combinations for crazy quilt embellishment. The easy-to-lay-flat spiral binding is a plus for convenience. A beginner might need to supplement their knowledge on how to execute the basic stitches, but from there you have an excellent inspiration for the variations in stitches so prized by the Victorian crazy quilters. This is a no-nonsense book that is a must for your needlework library.

Dorothy Day in her own words
Dorothy Day's life and writings challenge Christians to remember and serve the least among us. This selection of writings highlights a broad range of social, political and religious topics. In her time, Ms. Day's activism brought about much criticism and opposition. Today many remember her as America's Mother Teresa. Her purpose was to keep the Gospel alive through the challenge of service. Her voice continues to shine in the pages of this excellent collection. If you are interested in a call to social justice Dorothy Day's writings will be a source of continued inspiration.

Great!
This was the first book by Dorothy Day that I ever read and now I have just finished it for the second time. It's fabulous! Informative and inspirational. I found my faith strengthened by reading this book. I highly recommend it for all.

A call to radical Christianity
A collection of Day's writing, it's a fascinating read, and one would hope a call to conversion for those who fail to see Christ in all around them, especially in the poor. Remember, we are told not to judge and to give freely to all who ask. Think about that the next time you're approached by a panhandler.

True Spiritual Protection
Dorothy Harbour has written a wonderful and easy to follow book that is great for beginners as well as more experienced people interested in protecting themselves from unseen influences. She takes you step-by-step through her easy to understand methods on how to protect yourself from energy vampires at work, including mob attacks, personal relationship energy vampires, and also other energy draining people such as salesman, and many more. She explains the importance of the chakras, how to open, cleanse, and close them too. This is a complete guide that anybody can use and see improvements in their life immediately!

Great insight!
I feel that there are many energy vampires out there. They are those who drain you every time you are around them. I have found this a helpful book to help me not be so effected by those who are out there who does this.

Protect Yourself!
I have been studying the occult/new age for quite awhile. I have just recently become aware of the great need to protect yourself from psychic attack, especially if you are sensitive or into the occult/new age. Since I have been protecting myself my physical & emotional health has improved. From all the books I've been reading on the subject, it seems to all boil down to visualization exercises. I used to hate to do this kind of stuff but it's the only way to protect yourself from the unseen. It gets easier & more powerful the more you do it. I find this book has the most beautiful visualizations, it really helps you find one to embrace. This book also helps you realize that you are under attack from people close to you that you didn't suspect. It's not so much about how this happens, to find out how & why this happens I suggest reading "Practical Psychic Self-Defense" by Robert Bruce (that will scare you into doing visualizations for sure). I really liked "Energy Vampires" more so than "Protected by the light" I just wish it was longer! (I hope you write another book Dorothy, thank you!)

Excellent, a must read!
Tarot can be used by anyone to enrich his or her life, and this is the focal point of Dorothy Morrison's Everyday Tarot Magic. I was impressed with the unique way she acquainted me with all the cards and their meanings. With that background, I felt comfortable moving on to the second part of the book, where she launches into listing numerous spells and chants, all of which incorporated the use of a card or cards. As a beginner, I learned all the basic information I need to know about the Tarot to get me started, and I know that anyone with a tarot deck and a strong desire to turn dreams into reality will benefit from this well-crafted book.

Tarot in Your Everyday Life
Ms. Morrison is well known at events for her tarot readings.  I've seen lines backed out of the store waiting to have a reading by her.  It's about time she wrote this book.
Ms. Morrison presents us with the simple guide to working with tarot cards.  This book is written in a clear and easy to use format and uses everyday language.  The tarot is a tool, and Ms. Morrison shows us how to use it to the best of each person's ability.
The opening is a lovely overview of the history of the tarot.  There are so many different opinions, and she gives us a few of the possible origins of the deck.  There is also some background on the cards, the decks, how to choose a deck for yourself and preparation of the deck.
There are chapters on using the cards that are just chock full of basic, practical guidance and common sense.  She gives a very easy to understand overview of the meanings of the cards, the suits, and the Journey of the Major Arcana.  While this may sound very complex, Ms. Morrison is well known for her ability to make what could be ugly and overdone into something that is easy to read and understand.   She also has a section on using the cards for understanding your own inner self.
The second part of the book contains her very much sought after spells.  Tarot cards have been used in spell workings for a long time, and Ms. Morrison provides us with some wonderful workings covering addiction to wishes and everything in between.  As usual, these are the simple spells that one can use "Everyday", applying a generous dose of common sense and the needed magical push to make it work.
There are also correspondences in the back of the book as well as suggested card layouts and a lovely bibliography.  My copy of this book is a "pre-release" and did not contain an index.  Hopefully there is one when the book is published this month.  Every good book that finds its way into "Everyday" use should have a quick reference index.
Ms. Morrison gives us yet another useful and practical guide to working with another good tool.  For those who are looking to start using a tarot deck or are just contemplating the idea, this book will help you get started on the right foot.

Create magick sublime with tarot and enchanting rhyme!
I don't know how Dorothy Morrison does it. But she has created another fine book full of magick and charm, this time using the tarot as a magickal tool for spellwork. She provides readers with a very brief introduction to tarot cards and their history, a chapter on using the cards for self-discovery (combining tarot with numerology), some brief appendixes on color, herbal, and stone correspondences, 3 card layouts for divination, and a brief bibliography of source materials.

The heart of the book is devoted to spellwork (over 140 spells) for a variety of intentions that utilize tarot cards. They are simple workings designed to be used on their own, or, simple enough that you can enhance a more involved ritual working with one of these spells. Morrison also encourages readers, if they feel so inclined, to change, adapt or embellish the individual workings as they see fit.

Morrison has a rhyme for just about everything. She even starts the book off with a poem that introduces readers to its history and uses. Her workings are full of affirmative rhyming words to power-up the spell. "Fear, be gone-I take your power, Your well-laid plans have now gone sour" (from a spell against unfounded fears).

From there, some of the spells lead you to just light a candle, focus on the card and recite the affirmative chant. Some lead you into a little guided journeying, while others have you perform some action with the card itself. So a word of warning is in order. You will need to use a deck, perhaps an old one you don't use anymore, or one you buy just for the purpose of spellwork. This is because some of the cards will be burned, flushed away, buried, marked up or otherwise used in order to complete the spellworking.

Morrison suggests one excellent way around this problem--use photocopies of the cards. If you have one of those copier/scanner/printers for your computer like I do, you can even make color copies!

Although designed with simplicity for the beginner, I would highly recommend that those not familiar with spellwork acquaint themselves with the practices and ethics involved before beginning to use this book. It will insure that pitfalls are avoided and that you obtain the best results possible. There is a too brief explanation (for beginners) on the matter of the three-fold law of magick and the importance of focus, concentration and will on the success of the spellwork.

But for the majority of tarot aficionados, who want to explore more uses of the tarot in their everyday lives and for magickal practitioners looking for ways in which to use the tarot in their magickal practices, this book is an excellent choice for furthering your explorations.

Delightful!
Forever Friends is a delightful look at the close relationship between a pet dog, Petey and his boy companion, Skip. The text is warm and concise and reads aloud very well. The playful illustrations match the writing precisely in both spirit and content; an essential criteria for a great book in my children's estimation.

My nine year old opened the book initially thinking it was for "babies" but found herself highly amused that the story is told from an animal's perspective. She re-reads it often. We love Forever Friends!

Not Just For Kids
Yes, children 2-8 will love this quiet book about friendship between a boy and his dog. Rolls are blurred and we're never sure who is taking care of whom--not that it matters. This book makes a great gift with which to celebrate an adult friendship. Especially one that has surmounted role reversals and faded boundaries.

For boys and girls just learning how to read
Simply and engaging written by Barbara S. Cohen, Forever Friends is a warm, highly enjoyable children's picturebook about a young boy and his dog - forever friends, as seen from the pooch's point of view! Easygoing, simple caricature color artwork by Dorothy Louise Hall illustrates this delightful picturebook book for young readers ages 2 to 8 -- and most especially for boys and girls just learning how to read.

A Spiritual Delight
After reading Sister Dorothy's first book, 'Colors of the Spirit', she immediately became one of my favorite spirtiual authors. But when I read that she had a new book published called, 'A Golfer's Day With The Master,' I was dissapointed, thinking that she was trivilizing her remarkable talent by writing a book about a golfer's day with God. I was Wrong...Wrong...Wrong.

In my estimation, on the book jacket it should read, author Sr. Dorothy Ederer in collaboration with the Holy Spirit. I know you will also sense this as you read the beautiful prayers and reflections that are in this book. She has taken an ordinary subject, a day in the life of a golfer and made it into a spiritual treasure. This is a must read book for anyone who would like a better understanding of what can happen when one allows the Holy Spirit to abide in one's life. This book could have just as well been titled, 'One Day In Your Life With God' because it encompass's everything one needs to know about how we can relate to God in every aspect of our life.

I highly recommend this little treasure. It is a simple but profound book. My wife and I will reread it many, many times. Tom & Mary Milano

Sr. Dorothy Scores a Hole-In-One...again!
If you love golf......and your God, this is the book for you.Sr. Dorothy does a wonderful job of weaving a number of life's truestories into lessons from life. Her warmth in capturing these events truly touches one's soul. How do I know these stories are true?...well, I was one of those present for the hole-in-one story....it's all true! And yes, I was every bit as obnoxious as I appeared the book.

I think having Jack Nicklaus endorse this book tells you a great deal about its content.....and about Jack. I very highly recommend this book.

God's peace and love.....Lowell Rinker

Spirituality & Humor
Since I know Sister Dorothy personally from the time she was in Kalamazoo, MI I was delighted to see a new book by her and anxious to read it. I found it to be very enlightening and since I don't play golf I still found it to be enjoyable and relevant in my spiritual life. She opens your eyes to God with her special brand of humor and continues throughout the book to keep you turning the pages to find more ways to relate not just to a golf course but also the outdoors. I'd recommend this book for any one looking for more ways to bring spirituality into your life, along with humorous bits throught.

This book by Charles Wood is the authoritative history of the Great Northern Railway. As a long time GN fan and director of the GNRY Historical Society, I can tell you no other book on this subject comes close. You will enjoy the format of many photograghs, informative captions and accurate text. It is the "bible" for GN fans.

A must-read for Great Northern Railroad fans
A comprehensive history of the Great Northern Railroad. A "loving" tribute to a truly great railroad which never fell into receivership like many of the other large roads (such as the Pennsylvania and New York Central).
