Insightful look at the world's closest neighbours
One of the world's longest running friendships is viewed, reviewed and analysed in a very innovative way. Unlike the usual boring textbook type material one might expect to read on the subject, this book seems to be in a more informal, user-friendly layout. It should be enjoyed by layman and academic alike.

Wonderful and Charming! A Must Read!
Adam's Fall is the sequel to Fanta C. It is an inspiring book about Adam Cavanagh, the hotel owner, and Lilah. Daredevil Adam becomes paralized in an accident, and Lilah becomes his physical therapist. The first reason that I loved this book was that it was nothing like its prequel. Fanta C and Adam's Fall have completely different story lines, but are both wonderful stories. This book was also amazingly written as Ms. Brown has to create a character who is part helpless but still oozes sexuality and has a comanding presence. There was also a little suprise thrown in that really pleased me, but i had no inkling what was coming. I won't give any hint as to what it was, so you will have to read the book to find out. I recommend this book highly and wish you happy reading.

Loved the story line!
Sandra Brown has written another winner. This is one of my favorites. I loved the story line of the accident and the hero needing a theraptist. The scenes were well written and the steamy sections were great. I like to read about follow up characters from a previous book.

A real page turner!!
Great book! I couldn't put it down. This is how Sandra Brown should write all her books!! Worth buying and re-reading 100 times!!!

Black Elk was a good person to get to become a Shaman.
The book was about a young boy who was having vision at an early age. Not only that he was very ill when he had his first vision. At the end he became a Shaman which is closed enoughed as being a preist.

A work of the Great Spirit
Black Elk has channeled a deeply spiritual work from the Great Spirit, and in my mind will become another of the worlds holiest scriptures. Black Elk has lifted his self to saint hood right alongside the great ones. I love his work. I would recommend this book to all spiritual aspirants.

The whole of creation is essentially one, all parts within the whole are related...realize that at the center dwells Wakan Tanka, and that center is really everywhere, it is within each of us... May we walk with love and mercy upon the path which is holy... "Mita kuye oyasin!"

Wonderful Book!
Mr. Brown actualy lived with Ben Black Elk's family for a period of time while gathering material for this book, and he has the accurate information.

This book has several nice photos of the famous holy man Nick Black Elk.

santa mouse, where are you?
wonderful holiday book. However, I'm trying to locate a version which was illustrated by Elfrieda DeWitt and published by Grosset & Dunlap in New York in 1968. Classic tale which deserves to be passed on from generation to generation.

Santa Mouse Where Are You?
I have the book illustrated by Elfrieda DeWitt and published by Grosset & Dunlap in New York in 1968. It is a excellent book. I am trying to get rid of this one and get the other one though.

Wonderful! It's worth the effort to find a copy!
The original edition of this book was published the year I was born, and my mother received it as a Christmas gift just in time for my January arrival. For every year after that, I always looked forward to hearing this story. It was one of the first books I learned to read by myself, and I think my eagerness to read the book to my younger brother was major catalyst in my learning to read in the first place. The story is told in poetry form-very much like the Night Before Christmas-so passages will stick with you for years. When my copy of the book was lost during a move, I thought I was out of luck. Every store I checked could tell me nothing more than it was out of print. Recently, using the search ability of the internet, my brother was able to locate not one but two copies. Needless to say I was ecstatic.I can't wait to share this adorable story with my children someday, and strongly urge everyone who loves Christmas to do the same. Maybe you'll find yourself, as I do to this day, redesigning your tree lights to get that yellow one right where it needs to be:-)!

Great Map!
This map was an essential element of my time spent in Paris. It is perfect if you're going to be in Paris and need a very detailed street map while walking through the city. It doesn't cover many of the outer-lying areas, but it covers the heart of the city in-depth. I speak zero French and this map got me wherever I needed to go. I would recommend any of 'Streetwise' maps. I have used quite a few, both internationally and nationally, and have found them all to be extremely useful. In fact, whenever I know I'm going to be visiting a different city I buy one! Also worth the price because the maps are very durable, they're laminated and I've never had one tear on me.

Buy it, take it, use it!
Used it during pre-trip planning to research where to stay. Took it with us every day while exploring the streets of Paris, which can be confusing. Much better than a bulky paper fold-out map. Dropped our Streetwise while out in the rain but it suffered no damage because of its lamination. It also includes metro stops.

Be sure to get the "Streetwise" map and not the "Artwise" map. The Streetwise series includes an index of street names on the reverse, while the Artwise gives a list of museums & opening times. Index of street names is much more useful.

Also, the "Let's Go" people publish a similar type of map, but the Streetwise covers a greater area.

I love these maps!
These maps fold easily, fit in a pocket or purse, are laminated (water repellant)and the Paris map covers 80% of the main area of the city. It is not as good for areas outside of the city center (that is, outside of the single-digit arrondissments). Includes a metro map, and listing of street names with map locators. For walking around the most popular tourist areas, it is perfect. If you need a map that covers a larger area by all means buy another one and consult it before you go out, but don't walk around without Streetwise. I used it on my first trip to Paris and I used it on my ninth.

The Best Guide to the Debate
Since the publication of Michael Doyle's piece on Liberalism and Democracy in 1983, the debate over the democratic piece has been one of the most vigorous in the field of International Relations. This volume includes all the major works on the subject, including Doyle's original piece, as well as his latest thinking. Also included are John Owen's perceptual explanation of the democratic piece, and David Spiro's brilliant quantitative critique of it. For those looking to understand the debate, it is clearly the best body of work yet in print. The only drawback is that the debate seems to be tapped out; there is little new to contribute, and some feel enough has been said already and we need to move in directions.

It can't get any better than this
In essense, this is a response to the prior review. I agree with everything but the last line which I will paraphrase: what has been said has been said about the democratic peace proposition and theorists need to move on. The last chapter of this book, contributed by Michael Doyle, outlines future paths that research of the DPT can continue, and considering that the U.S. government emphasizes the development of democracy in many of its foreign policy endeavers, sometimes with out success, it is imperative that more work be continued. This collaboration of essays provides an excellent starting point understand the debate, but further analysis is continuing. If you are intersted in the DPT, DO NOT END HERE!

Expert guidance on combining gardening and Jewish life.
This book has made my wife and I excited about planting our next year's garden. The book gives easy-to-understand guidance on planting, raising, and cooking many biblical foods, and it explains how the foods relate to Jewish holidays. It's obvious the author loves to garden, and his enthusiasm comes across. The advice is expert and simple. The botanical illustrations are also very pretty. I tried one recipe so far (apple-raisin-nut cake), and it was delicious.

Great book!
This is a great book for home gardeners who want to expand their garden to include some "jewish" plants. The book explains how each plant fits in with jewish history and customs. It also tells you how to care for the plants!

Practical help for deploying specific security applications
I am a senior engineer for managed network security operations, who works mostly with FreeBSD, Linux, and Solaris. I read this book to learn more about security technologies associated with products by Cisco, Microsoft, and other vendors. (I also try to read a variety of computer security books.) If you're planning to deploy Cisco routers, Microsoft Proxy Servers, or Raptor / Checkpoint / Pix firewalls, give this book a try. If not, you may find the first few chapters worthy nonetheless.

"Mission Critical" strictly adheres to the defender's point of view, whereas books like "Hacking Exposed" demonstrate security by describing the attacker's perspective. Chris Brenton's "Mastering Network Security" (Sybex, 1999) is my favorite "defensive" book, although I bet his new book "Active Defense" (Sybex, 2001) will be the king of this category. "Mission Critical's" focus on the Microsoft world at the expense of UNIX operating systems is a weakness, unlike the even-handed attention in Brenton's books.

My favorite section in "Mission Critical" is chapter 4, "Internet Security Applications," which describes cryptography, digital signatures, SSL, SSH, PGP, S/MIME, and Kerberos. The authors give just enough detail to explain how these technologies work without being boring or repetitive. Chapter 3, "IPSec," is instructive, and I also think chapter 8, "Cisco IOS," delivers plenty of content.

The book's main weakness (other than failure to give UNIX enough attention) is its lack of cohesiveness. I could tell several writers were involved, each with a different opinion as to what "layer 3" or "layer 4" means, for example. (This matters; are we talking OSI or "DoD" TCP/IP? If "DoD" TCP/IP, is the bottom layer "network" as listed on page 22 or "host-to-host" as on page 157? And doesn't "network" usually refer to layer 3 in the OSI model, anyway?) I survived the inconsistencies, but would the intended audience?

I strongly recommend prospective readers check the table of contents to see if the products discussed apply to your environment. As a general security book, "Mission Critical" rates 3 stars. As a book for professionals needing help with specific products, it's a 4 star book. "Mission Critical" is another step in the right direction for Syngress.

(Disclaimer: I received my review copy free from the publisher.)

Good material on Proxy Server
As an IT professional, I bought this book to see what I am missing on the Internet security area. Just to discorve that there are so many issues that did not know. I especially like the chapter on Proxy Server (by Joli Ballew).

Well worth reading material.

Theories of War and Peace (International Security Readers)

A good book
Like most of "International Security" readers, this is also a compendium of realist authors in IR theory. It is more of the same until you read the wonderful response to John Mearsheimer written by Alexander Wendt. His text is worth the book. Even today Mearsheimer doesn't understand what Wendt has to say so well. If you're really into realism, maybe you should check (from the same series) "Perils of Anarchy". I think it's a lot better.

All You Need to Know about International Relations?
"Theories of War and Peace" edited by Brown, et. al. gives the reader of International Relations a "one stop shop" of various theories of International Relations. The list of contributors to this volume is impressive and the editors arrange the essays in such a way as to naturally follow and even (at times) rebut that which came before.

An Invaluable Guide to the Latest Thinking in IR
This book is a collection of essays from academic journals written by the top professors in the field of International Relations. As such it will be of little interest to the general reader. But to the student of IR it is one of the best compilations available. Included are Mearsheimers classic 'Back to the Future' and 'The False Promise of International Institutions'. One of the more interesting sections in the book concerns the latter piece and vigorous resonses to it. Also included in the book are Stephen Van Evera's theory of First Mover Advantages, and Dale Copeland's application of dynamic realism to trade relations. Truly a volume of gems, it should be bought by any serious student of International Politics.
