half fact, half fiction.
There is Heaven and hell only. Read your bible everyday, prey
3 times a day and ask god to lead you to salvation.

More Religious Propoganda....
Raised a Roman Catholic and educated in Catholic schools through college I have a clear understanding of the belief system that Catholicism is built on. In the past ten years I have read over 50 books on "The After Life" by all of the renown experts. From John Edward and Ruth Montgomery to Raymond Moody, they all have a common message about life after life. They all describe the different stages you go through after each life - the life review, your soul groups, personal guides, the life selection process, etc..

The whole theory of heaven and hell, when analyzed, seems pretty far fetched. it took me a long time to de-program my Catholic thinking to a more realistic belief. There are so many different religions in the world that differ greatly from each other, with the exception of a superior being, that it would impossible for only one to be right and all the rest to be wrong. Biblical stories have man dying in a lake of fire if they don't live life in the image of Jesus. Are you telling me that the other 90% of the world that isn't Catholic are a waste of life when they die? They go to "A" hell or purgatory and do what? Life in eternity in the worst place imaginable or wait in purgatory until you have prayed enough to God? This book is just regurgitating a newer view of the after from a religious perspective. I firmly believe that organized religious beliefs regardless of denomination are a good discipline to life one's life by. Not necessarily that it is THE religious belief system that will grant you entrance to heaven.

As I mentioned before, there are many good book on what really goes on in the after life and how shocked you will all be at the lack of centralized religions. We are the only ones who judge our past lives and do not get condemned for our sins by GOD.

An unbiased and non-religious book for someone who is interesting in what goes on in the after life based on thousands of case studies on past life regression is JOURNEY OF SOULS, by Dr. Michael Newton.

Regardless of your current belief on after life, Newton will give you a different perspective on life after life.

afterlife
this is one of the best books i have ever read on the afterlife, it gives so much hope to hear the stories in this book, you will never look at life the same.

Another of Prima's hack-'n'-slash jobs...
...hits the streets with a resounding "thud." It's amazing to me how Prima can keep pumping out this garbage. I guess the only thing more amazing than the low quality of Prima's "strategy guides" is the fact that we keep buying their cruddy books.

The ultimate guide to Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko!
The Gex 3 Strategy guide from Prima is very useful, and very fun to use. It shows every tip and trick you need to destroy the evil Rez and save Xtra from the depths of a media dimension! Plus, it has secret codes that you can use in the GEX Vault to make yourself a Gexcellent (excellent) player! Displaying maps of every theme, translating Alfred the turtle's misunderstandable quotes of wisdom, and showing full-color snapshots of the tricky environments is what this great book has to offer! WARNING N64 OWNERS: One secret level, one bonus level, and the Mythology (Greek) Channel level are the only three backgrounds/settings that were made only for the Playstation (Teen rated) version, and are much different from the Nintendo 64 version (rated Everyone). But don't get discouraged, N64 users. This book can still be fun for you!

I think if people need hints for Gex they got it in this bk.
I think if people need hints for gex 3, well they prety much got what they were looking for. This book is great for me.

Prison's Bloody Iron

STRANGE LITTLE BOOK
This book, written by a pair of ex-convicts, was amusing and strange. A lot of space was devoted to nutrition (with some questionable data), physical conditioning, and a dubious "history" of knife fighting. The techniques depicted vary from good to ill advised, but are definitely worth a look. There is some good advice in this book, but it cannot be considered "all good." I would recommend this book based solely upon the authors' numerous anecdotes (from barroom brawls to fighting with sharpened NAIL CLIPPERS in juvie hall). Bizarre!!!

Credible....yet bizarre
This book was a good read until the last chapter or so. It went off on a nutritional/work out tangent that will leave most readers going "Huh?" Anyway, the methods outlined are quite good...similar to Applegate and Pentecost (possibly it influenced the latter). For pure instruction, I would go with Pentecost's book since it is much more to the point...but Bloody Iron is a much more enjoyable read.....these guys share their prison stories. Plus you get to see some pretty horrific fashions from the 70's era!

Brutally realistic and a no nonsense treatise on the blade.
After spending many years in the sometimes violent world of law enforcement (police officer), I have read many books and articles by the so-called "experts" in real life deadly encounters. This book is much different. It is written by two guys who's credits are which federal penal institutions they have been incarcerated in. These guys are the real deal. They present the brutal and ugly world of personal combat in a no nonsense and straight ahead approach. No fluff or unrealistic B.S.. This book dispells the modern martial arts approach to defense against edged weapons, an approach that has caused many their lives. This is a must read for anyone who works in a violent occupation.

The Fourth Mega-Market, Now Through 2011
Do not waste your time reading Ralph J. Acampora's book. It is another way Mr. Acampora is trying to make money is today's world. When will he have enough?

Interesting read.
I read a lot of investment material and this is the first time I have heard of the concept of a "mega-market". Mr. Acampora provides interesting comparisons to prior mega-markets with very brief lessons in technical analysis. He has made a boring subject interesting and uses a lot of personal examples. I think it takes guts to go out on a limb to highlight a phenomenon and to have in print that you predict that this bull market will run through 2011. This is even more corageous considering he finished this book during the present market turmoil. I don't find this to be vanity but more of a desire to share his knowledge with others. You are not going to learn all the details of technical analysis, but reading his book gave me the confidence to contiue investing in this bear market.

A Market History Lesson
Unlike several current books about the stock market that I've read, Mr. Acampora chooses not to make incredible Dow predictions but rather presents an excellent historical and technical argument for investor optimism. He explains the social and technology backdrop of prior robust market eras and shows the reader why everything is in place for a grand future. Bear markets and the periodic deflation of speculation are a natural occurence in the course of a bull mega-market. If anything, this book will build your confidence as a long term investor and support a committment to stay in the market during the current severe stock correction. Mr. Acampora addresses the current market and puts it in a historical context and that I found very informative. The book is very well written and I have no doubt this is due to the collaboration with Michael D'Antonio who put his Pulitzer Prize winning writing skills to work here. You don't have to learn much technical analysis to enjoy this book. Mr. Acampora makes a solid and easily understood case for it but, in my mind, his inate integrity, sense of history, and long experience find an intuitive expression through that venue. At first I was going to rate this book a 4 but after some thought upgraded to a 5 because the book's understated style truely provides a thoughtful and informative experience that will benefit the investor. Highly recommended.

Some useful information, but mostly a long ad for Adobe.
Beware those Adobe-endorsed books. While there are some useful examples herein, most of this is just one long diatribe on the virtues of Adobe and their pivotal place in developing web content. If you're looking to this book to discover how to publish for the web, there are precious few really useful pointers. While the Adobe Classroom in a Book series is instructive, their other titles are of very limitted usefulness (and often very expensive). This book is no exception. Lacks any real discussion of the intricacies of web design. Say nay. Docked a notch for being so expensive.

Packed with Adobe Goodness
It's true, this book focuses exclusively on Adobe software, but it IS called Adobe Web Design & Publishing. The warning is right there in the title. That said, it's a tome of useful tips on using Adobe software to create professional quality web sites and graphics. If you use Adobe software to create web sites, consider buying this book. One caveat: Adobe Web Design & Publishing does not cover Adobe's latest and greatest web site design software, Go Live. Hopefully the next version will.

Did Brown have Panther Bookkeeper Betty VanPatter Murdered?
Elaine Brown may have had Panther bookkeeper Betty Van Patter murdered on orders from Huey Newton, according to strong circumstantial information recounted by author David Horowitz, former movement member, in his book "Hating Whitey". Even by her own writings in "A Taste of Power" she comes across as a dangerous psychopath who gets sensuous gratification from seeing people brutally beaten. If you buy this or any other book by her, you very well may be giving money someone involved in a murder.

See chapter 9, "Black Murder, Inc." of David Horowitz's book "Hating Whitey" for the full story on Elaine Brown.

Challenging Overview of Racism in 2002
Elaine Brown presents much more than the title suggests. Rather than restricting herself to the case of Lil B (Michael Lewis) by itself, she places this case in a setting of racism, both in history and in our time, nationally and in Georgia, in such a way as to challenge both the white power structure as well as the African American community to face up to our abdication of responsibility for the marginalized, especially the adolescent African American males. The handling of the case of Lil B is symptomatic of this abdication, beginning with Atlanta's blindness to the existence of the Bluff (a drug infested block of west side Atlanta); moving on to the self-absorbed ambition of some of the African American leadership; and ultimately indicting the white power structure's arrogance rooted in the so-called brilliant insights of Thomas Jefferson on the subject of African Americans. Brown is well versed in her subject, articulate in expressing her views, and forthright in calling for action from all segments of our contemporary society. Brilliant piece of work.

From an Iris gardener in the US
For a person who needed information on growing Irises outside England and the Pacific Northwest, this would be not be the best first purchase. I can't judge how well it would describe cultural best practice in England but with Irises climate is extremly important. What works in one climate will not work in another, Iris Borer, for example, only lives in North America but it is a terrible pest there. It would make lovely winter reading for most of us because of the artistic photographs and excellent botany of the various Iris species. However don't expect to be able to buy many of the varities shown, the English have their own set of Iris varities and only rarely import the American ones.

Good reading for Iris lovers
"The Gardener's Guide to Growing Irises" by Geoff Stebbings is more readable and less usable than many of the gardening books I own. It is a wonderful book to curl up with in the winter when your garden is covered with snow. The pictures are beautiful and in color, although I wish there were more of them (I think I've been spoiled by the photos in the Iris catalogues that show up in my mailbox every Spring). The author has definite opinions as to which varieties work best in the garden. In his chapter on "The Value of Iris in the Garden" he states the following:

"Perhaps it is because the bearded iris show such variety that many gardeners do not look elsewhere in the genus for garden plants. This is a mistake, however, because although the deep, blackcurrent purple of 'Superstition' may have a velvety sheen, a ruffling and size that are hard to match, the deep purple of forms of 'I. Chrysographes' are augmented by bright golden markings on a flower of refinement and poise that makes the other look clumsy and almost grotesque."

The tall, bearded Iris also gets short shrift in the popular "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" by Tracy DiSabato-Aust, but I would venture to say that theirs is the minority opinion among gardeners. Most of us love the bearded irises for their gorgeous colors and perfumes, and in spite of their short season of bloom. This book's longest chapter is on the Tall Bearded Iris, so it can't be said that the author neglects them. There are also chapters on the Siberian Iris, the Pacific Coast Iris, the Water Iris, the Spuria Iris, the Stinking Iris, the Dwarf Bulbous Iris, and "Iris for the Specialist".

As interesting as this book is to read, it is not really organized to help you locate a quick paragraph on what to do about the Iris borer grub that you just discovered in your 'Beverly Sills' rhizome. In fact 'iris borer' isn't even listed in the index. If you flip to the lone page on 'pests', you won't find them there, either-just a few miscellaneous paragraphs on aphids and wet rot.

Buy "The Gardener's Guide to Growing Irises" if you love irises and would like to learn more about them. However, you might want to look elsewhere for a straightforward guide to growing and caring for these lovely flowers.

Warmed-over tourist stuff
Insiders Guide to the Adirondacks reads like warmed-over tourism material. I was disappointed in the organization and lack of real "insider" info. Generic looking throughout.

a travel book with a sense of humor
I found this to be not only comprehensive, but very entertaining and lighthearted. This is one of the few travel books I've read that actually made me laugh out loud here and there. Living near the region covered, I know you have to have good "local knowledge" to enjoy the Adirondacks. This book has plenty of it. I particularly liked the dozens of "insider tips" throughout.

Great Expecations and Disappointment
Most of the authors regurgitate pretty much the same "cautious-optimism" material that currently dominates the China field. Among the authors, Christensen and Ross deliver their typically good arguments. But since the work brings little fresh to the table and its clear tilt (without much counter-arguments, other than self-hedging from the authors), I had to rate it poorly, given the intended audience... probably students seeking balanced viewpoints.

Solid material for anyone intersted in Chinese Foreign Polic
This collection of articles from International Security (an IR journal) has a good collection of solid articles about a topic of much dispute, the Rise of China. This is good material for a Chinese Foreign Policy class, although it maybe somewhat preoccupied with military affairs.
