Perils of Anarchy: Contemporary Realism and International Security (International Security Readers)
Published in Paperback by MIT Press (27 March, 1995)
Authors: Michael E. Brown, Sean M. Lynn-Jones, and Steven E. Miller
Amazon base price: $32.95
Average review score:

Excellent book
This International Security reader is a great collection of the recent work in the realist tradition in International Relations. Here you can read the "classic" authors (like Waltz and Walt) and the "new generation" (Schweller - excellent - and Zakaria). The introduction, written by the editors of the volume, is wonderful: it really "maps" realism and its authors. There is also two essays by John Mearsheimer, the "hardcore" realist and his gloomy "Back to the Future" article. Great book and certainly worth the money. This is the best book in the "International Security" readers series.

Photoshop 6 Power Shortcuts

Can't live without it!
This is the first version of this book that I own (it exists for earlier versions of Photoshop as well). I don't know what I did without it.
As a Photoshop instructor I really need to be in front of my students when it comes to knowledge. This book is really great for me making an impression on very skilled students! (And I get those!)
The book mentions the keyboardshortcuts along with the mouse-and-keyboard and the mouse-only ones. F. inst.: drag a layer down on the create a new layer-icon, or CTRL/Command + J for duplicating a layer quickly.
The book lists shortcuts for vs. 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, Image Ready 3 and 2 for each shortcut. That's useful, especially if you are working in an environment with different versions, as I do.
The author provides us with a written easter egg on page vi (yess, page vi!). Enjoy - and benefit!

An Essential book for Kid's (and teens and adult) Games
"This book is one of the best you can get for all those basic children's (and teens and adults) games you know you know how to play, you just need to get the reminders. Hey, you might even find a few you didn't know you didn't know. We certainly did and we think we are pretty good at knowing lots of games (and we are humble, too) for lots of ages. Get this book and let it become one of the essentials of your bookshelf, desk and backpack." -Storyteller.net Reviews

Pokemon for Dummies!
Let me start by saying I had no idea who or what a Pokemon was before I made this purchase(with the intention of learning more about this craze that all the children are into these days.) My 9 year old has decided that she wants to start collecting and since I didn't know anything at all, zero, zip. I wanted to know at least something about Pokemon. After my purchase, my husband and I now know more than we ever really wanted to know about Pokemon! :0) Excellent resource for those just starting out or just "us" slow learners. Very easy to understand and just as easy to refer back to as a reference. I would highly recommend you purchase Pokemom Made Simple guides. They are well worth the money and not as expensive as some of the Pokemon books that are circulating.

Race, Money, and the American Welfare State
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (1999)
Author: Michael K. Brown
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

Excellent Description of the Welfare State
I read this book in Michael Brown's class on the relation between Capitalism and State at UC Santa Cruz during the Sping of 1999. This book is an incredible look at how the American Welfare State developed. Brown's argument is that while their were institutional features that shaped the creation of Welfare State, the two most important factors are not structure, but race and money. Brown takes the reader through the New Deal and Great Society, finally ending up with the retrenchment policies of Ronald Reagan, and explains that the policies of the Welfare State created a racially stratified society because the policies were not universalistic. The combination of means-tested programs and a Social Security program that was not all inclusive while also being regressive in its taxing policy, creates what Brown describes as truncated universalism. His work is an excellent addition to Welfare State literature. Additionally the book is a pleasure to read. Brown's writing is very fun and he includes many interesting quotes from the main players of the twentieth century. A great book.

What an unusual book dedicated to those free-spirited plants that ramble, scramble, and twine across our gardens. Very well done with a good balance of information and illustration - a book I pull off the shelf regularly.

A Wonderful Collection of Art

Seven Days with Mary
Published in Paperback by Faith Pub Co (1998)
Author: Michael H. Brown
Amazon base price: $6.50
Average review score:

Magnifying The Lord
A fantastic help for those seeking a deeper prayer life. This book goes beyond tracing the surprising roots of Marian devotion. It makes clear why God, the Creator, might desire that Mary, His creation, assist Him in taking back what is pagan (namely, us), in order for Him to restore us to our intended destiny (namely, Heaven). Luke's Gospel says her soul "magnifies The Lord". The Word made Flesh is seen only through Mary. You won't find boring facts and figures in this book. You will find

yourself glorifying The Lord more intimately than you do now through faith and prayer. Highly recommended, second only to Saint Louis de Monfort's True Devotion.
