It wasnt enough information.
It needed more information. It was very interesting but not enough to learn more about my kitten. I needed to learn how to train her while she is young. I am looking for a book that talks about outside cat. My kitten, Ashley, cant come in the house when she wants to..I have to let her in. I want to know if it is alright to have an outside kitten. If it is dangerous or not. Cat Care was a good book but not enough. It was at a price I culd offord and it answered almost all my questions. If you have a indoor cat/kitten then I recommend this book to you. Thank You.

Jessica

An ideal book for first time cat care neophytes (like moi)
We got a kitten this month, although I had nothing to do with the decision. I was given a kitten and told not to do anything bad to it. My primary goal has been to avoid being bitten or scratched. However, having vivid memories of the less than distinguished survival rate of various goldfish and one title in my youth, I am rather nervous about bearing partial responsibility for a mammal. Fearing for the life of the kitten (her name is Kiara) I was given "101 Essential Tips: Cat Care." Obviously the first several tips, dealing with "How to Choose a Cat" are water under the bridge, but the "Housing and Handling" and "Feeding Tips" sections have been a big help. I certainly feel that I can now pretend that I know what I am doing in those limit areas and do not feel the need to be up to speed on Grooming, Health, Nursing and First Aid at this point in time. However, I am now diligently studying the "Understanding Your Cat" unit, although I have reason to believe a kitten is not the same thing as a cat.

This is not an ultimate guide to keeping a cat alive, but it is definitely ideal for a neophyte such as myself. As advertized this book gives quick anwers to not only obvious questions but those you need to know about. The tips by Andrew Edney and David Taylor are ineed easy to absorb and I have given Kiara more than 10-15 minutes of fun work out each day (she likes to leap high at dangling objects and to attack giant roles from wrapping paper). Down the road I will probably be interested in some large tome with more details, but for now this little book with all the pretty pictures is exactly what I need.

Quick Answers for Indoor Cats
No, this is not quite The New Encyclopedia of the Cat by Dr. Bruce Fogle, but it does contain some helpful answers for someone who has just found a new cat and needs fast answers.

If you want to know how to choose a cat, lift and hold a cat, train a cat to use a litter box and know what to feed your new pet...then this book will tell you all you need to know.

This also includes Feeding tips, a grooming guide, understanding your cat, health checks, taking care of a sick cat and first aid tips.

There is a section on allowing a new cat outdoors. It explains cat doors, common outdoor hazards and knowing when your cat is ready to go outdoors.

Cats are actually very easy to care for and give you a ton of love in return for your attention. Some of the best toys are rings you find around the milk top from the milk jugs or a piece of string with a feather on the end. Cats love to play and will amuse themselves for hours on their own if they have a feline friend.

I recommend you find two kittens at the same time. Two balls of fur are the most fun and will give you plenty of laughs.

The Best
Lisbon is one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world. All someone needs when they get there is this book. I would give it 5 stars, but since the city has changed a lot in the past year (with the addition of the "Parque das Nações"-"Park of the Nations") this 1997 edition does not even begin to cover the "new" city, although it does it better than any other book you may find. Because of this, you should wait for the 2000 edition that is coming out in April of 2000. After that, enjoy the city, and if you haven't been there in the last 1 year and a half, and you decide that you want to go back, you'll see that it is now a totally new city with lots of new things to offer, especially the beautiful Park of the Nations, which is where the world expo '98 took place, which offers Europe's largest Aquariam, the modern Vasco Da Gama tower, which offers amazing views, etc. Enjoy!

Another top-notch Eyewitness Travel Guide
Eyewitness Travel Guides are really great value and this is a very nice guide book. Take an Eyewitness Guide and a Cadogan Guide (if available) and you will have all the information you might possibly need. Forget the competition. This is the kind of intelligent tour guide you have been waiting for.

The introduction is a beautifully illustrated time line of Portuguese history since the 1200s. The city and surrounding area is then broken up into sections and each is introduced by use of picture-driven accounts and easy to read descriptions of what you will encounter. There are nice maps and each area is described in such illuminating detail that you cannot help but get up early and get down to it. Each place of interest is preceded by a list of opening times, map locations and details of how to get there by using public transport.

It's all highly readable and also gives useful tips on where to eat, what to do, where to stay and how to get about. The nice thing about the hotels and eating guides is the way this book breaks down its recommendations by price - allowing travellers of varying budgets to enjoy their time in this fascinating of cities.

This is a very good book indeed.

First-timer in Lisbon?
Just back from a week in Lisbon, we used this guide & found that we could have spent a month or more & still not have come anywhere near exhausting the possibilities shown in the book. The previous reviewer made the point that this guide (1997 edition) is a bit out-of-date; true, but what it does include is excellent & very well presented. The book is a convenient size, has a sturdy cover, & is easy to carry with you as you explore the city. I usually go for Lonely Planet travel books, but chose this one instead because of its excellent illustrations. For your first visit to Lisbon, I don't think that you can go wrong with this book. By all means, go & see this marvelous city, an intriguing mix of old & new, but be sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes; Lisbon is built on 7 hills, & everything is either up- or downhill. The walkways are paved with stones & are not smooth, but that is part of the charm of the city. We plan to go back again.

Simple common tips, but very useful
This book lists some very useful tips, something you need to know, not too much words but very clear. I find it is very helpful for us, the first time parents. I will highly recommend this book to parents-to-be, because it is a very hardy book.

User friendly and practical
"101 Essential Tips" is worth the read. The authors touch topics that are of relevance to every expectant mother. The strength of the book is that it presents beautiful photos as illustrations. The exercises are so much more easier to imitate by simply looking at the pictures.
If you or a friend are experiencing the jitters about having a healthy baby this book is a good choice. Everything from common pregnancy complaints and how to deal with them to preparation for labor are dealt with using a very practical approach. This book is also good as a reference guide for experienced mothers.
Well worth your time!

"If it had to be a book, this is the best one."
If you have a child who loves cars but is not, shall we say, an avid reader, buy this book! Our son guessed this was a book through the birthday wrapping but his deflated expression turned to ecstasy when he opened it. The bright color photographs are very appealing and he ate up the text. A quality purchase.

Vroom vroom!
As the Crosby, Stills, and Nash song instructs: "Teach your children well!" With pictures of classic Porsches to Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Mustangs, your child will be prepared for the next Concours d'Elegance. Fun for the car fanatic mom or dad to share with their little boy or girl. Will strike fear at the thought of them asking for the keys to the car.

History, Mythology and Lots of Remedies
Wonderful and detailed collection of information on the history and mythology regarding mint plants. My favorite sections, though, are the chapters on remedies and cosmetics--there are lots of recipes and how-to instructions for making and using teas, tinctures, tonics--even a refreshing minty bath fizz!

A great book for mint lovers!
This book is so informative about every type of mint plant that exists, and educates the reader on how mint has been used in various cultures throughout history. More importantly, though, it teaches the reader many different ways in which mint can be used. It shows you how to make homemade mint shampoo, mint foot creme (which is good for itchy skin), mint massage oil (which is especially comforting to a young child), mint toothpaste, mint foot soak, etc. There are also helpful hints on how mint can aid in healthful ways, such as easing an upset stotmach or soothing a cold. It mentions that peppermint is too strong for babies and very young children, and that spearmint is much more suitable for them. A cup of spearmint tea before bed with a little honey can help a person sleep. At the end of the book, there are different types of gifts you can make out of mint, including sachets, etc. It's definitely worth the money if you love mint!

So nice BUT
I like this book so much, when you just knows that DK is the publisher, you can make sure that this book is a very high quality, the pictures and designs is more than great, its really wonderful and i liked it so much, but i prefer if they include an empty pages for our creative idea. Otherwise, its the best book you can use as a record for your merrage and wedding part.

A Time to Remember
Planning a wedding is a heavenly experience, keeping everything organized could be considered divine. If you want to keep all your memories safe, The Wedding Planner and Record Book is a beautifully illustrated choice. From lace to heart pendants to exquisite flower arrangements, the pictures sprinkled through the book are so romantic.

You rarely find a book that is not only a wedding organizer, but is also a keepsake photo album. There is plenty of space for notes, photographs and treasured mementoes, like a menu or wedding invitation.

If you haven't decided on the type of ceremony, the reception style or how many guests you want to invite, this book will help you get all those details taken care of in style. Within the pages you will find unique ideas, etiquette tips, quotes about marriage and traditional rituals. A wedding checklist also ensures you will keep up with your plans from month to month.

The six pages for recording your wedding gifts is an excellent idea as you can also record if you have sent a thank-you note. There is a section for keeping the financial records which is important if you want to keep on budget.

If you know someone who is seriously dating or has just become engaged, I can't think of a more appropriate gift to wish them well. Marriage is a wonderful journey and I highly recommend keeping a record of one of the most important times of your life.

If you are buying this for yourself, memories help to remind you of your eternal commitment to the one you love and once you have recorded your memories and have included some wonderful pictures, you will want to keep this book on your coffee table or with your wedding dress for a moment when you want to remember how lucky you are to be in love.

lots of horses for older kids
this is a nice book for older kids who want many horse pictures to match with the horse name for reference. the book consists of just that.
my daughter is 4 and loves horses and stickers, but the book is not well suited for her.

Horse lover? You'll love this
What could be better for a young horse lover? A book full of horses and stickers. Together! On top of that there are nice, brief descriptions about each type of horse.

My Daughter loves this book! It's great for road trips.
This is the perfect gift for any kid that loves horses. The re-useable stickers help them to identify different breeds. My kids take it in the car, when they see a horse they find the correct sticker and put it in the proper place in the book. There they can read all about that particular horse. Full color pictures and easy to read text make this book enjoyable and educational. Afterall, you can only spell the alphabet using highway signs so many times before it's old... I highly recommend "The Ultimate Horse Sticker Book!

A feast for the eyes and the best guide book I own!
My friends and I were prepared to fall in love with Prague based entirely on this travel book. The street-by-street descriptions are right on the mark. The historical buildings are dissected to show you the interiors, a wonderful and unique way to give you the floor plans. There are also timelines throughout the quide to chart significant events of the major buildings and people of Prague. I read a large portion of the quide book before I left home, I kept it close to me the entire time I was in Prague for easy reference and I still keep it handy at home. This one is packed to bursting with all the information you could ever need. When I think of going on holiday now, the first thing I go looking for is a travel guide in this excellent series!

The guide that SHOWS you what others only tell you!
The series of Eyewitness Travel Guides (particularly one on Prague) has been highly recommended by several travel sites. With my forthcoming trip to Prague this summer, I immediately got curious & ran to the nearest specialty bookstore right after office hours. I have to agree that this is the BEST guide book I have ever seen. Not only does it have maps or the tourist highlights, but it also contains a history of the place, background of the famous sites & LOVELY photos! It also has a primer on culture, etiquette & currency, a guide on getting around via public transport, a suggestion on restaurants & a limited selection on housing (you can find more of this in the Net or other travel guides). This book is as good as a real souvenir from the trip itself with all its lovely photos & background. I will definitely bring this book (together with the other series I bought for Vienna & Budapest)with me when I leave in August.

A bunch of travel books all rolled up into one.
After years of traveling in Europe and buying countless books and maps on every country, city and tourist site, finally a series of books that gives you a little of everything, but is small enough to carry easily.

This Eyewitness Guide, like the others in this series, gives you a way to quickly identify areas of interest and gives you enough detail and colorful pictures, that country, city and site specific guide books are no longer necessary. The maps in the back are correct and easy to use with an amazing amount of detail. The opening and closing times are always correct. The restaurant and hotel recommendations are right on. The survival guide in the back gives you quick reference on everything from what the currency is to how to use the telephone.

On top of all of the contents, the book itself is tough enough to be thrown around in that backpack or shoved into your pocket without hurting it. The paper is of high quality with sharp graphics. The cover is tough and has built in page marks.

I travel to Europe several times a year and have tried every travel series there is. After using the Eyewitness Travel Guide, these along with the Rick Steves' series is all I ever use anymore.

Very useful guide!
I purchased this book when I knew I was taking a trip to Spain but I was trying to find a way to decide between Madrid and Barcelona. I found all the information extremely useful. Eventually we decided to go to Barcelona and took the guide along since it seemed as though we would refer to it often.

This book had a section devoted to Barcelona and separate areas devoted to the hotels and restaurants. I particularily liked the fact that they devoted a whole 2 page spread to a particular site to see with close up photos and some detailed explanations. After visitng a few of the sites, I came back to the hotel room and re-read the description and it gave me a greater appreciation for what I had seen. Also, the hand drawn 3D maps were very useful for me as a very visual person because they helped me gain a greater sense of direction. The descriptions of the various points of interest were very helpful and contained a lot of information along with street address, phone number and hours of operation. At the end of the section were a few maps which were also very simple and had various important landmarks throughout.

Walking down the stretch of road in Barcelona known as La Rambla, you would see many newspaper stands and they always had Eyewitness guidebooks to sell as well. Also, I saw many tourists carrying this book as their guide in many different languages. Since this book was all about all of Spain, I would probably recommend picking up the specific Barcelona and Catalonia edition if you are interested in visiting the particular area. But all in all I really enjoyed this book. It was definately stronger in the attractions and things to see area and a bit weaker with hotel and restaurant recommendations.

Beautiful info packed book.
This book is wonderful and visually exciting! Its color pictures, maps and legends to historical sites make it a "must have" for travel to Spain, but what is even more exciting is the timeline detailing the country's history, from being part of the Roman Empire to Moorish influence, right up to present day. Among the myriad of covered topics, there are souvenir and shopping recommendations, information on medical care, a calender of festivals, and even a weather guide. The indespensible information and the sheer beauty of the book make it a real page turner. You're not bogged down by too long explanations or endless rambling. It whets your appetite for the culture and doesn't let you down. Going to Spain? Don't go without this book.

Great Travel Guide, Beautiful Coffee Table Book!
.
Summary:
Every Dorling Kindersley Guide has been a great and interesting book... and delightful to have and use, even if you are not traveling to that location, but are only interested in learning more!

The Guides are well organized in a logical and easy to follow manner. They are beautifully illustrated, well developed with accurate information (it is unusual for hotel and restaurant information to be that accurate), have enough history to help the reader understand the people and cultural background, and have a lot of useful travel information and useable maps in the appendixes.

But, the really great attraction to this book is several fold; it is:
............Very complete
............Easy to read
............Beautifully and artistically completed
............Good shopping, safety and other tips
............Gorgeous photographs too numerous to list.

Summary Negative:

The country books are too general to really satisfy all your needs in any given location. So, if your entire trip is spent in Malega, for example, you will also want to get the specific guide for that city (but, the Barcelona Section is fairly good)

Guide Specifics:

The guides are organized as follows:

Discussion:
The book begins with "A Portrait of Spain", including a complete map, a review of Spain, it's history, and Spain's History (very interesting), and Spain thought the Year - including events, etc.,

Region with an "At a glance" overview, then has subsections of Cities / Towns, then specific locations, churches, historical monuments, bridges, galleries, etc.

The Barcelona section is excellent. However, is not necessarily worth the whole book (and its weight) if you are only traveling to Barcelona. Personally, I find Barcelona is one of the finest European cities. I would go there for any reason, anytime. And, many of our corporate clinets and their European attendees feel the same way. While in Barcelona, don't miss Sitges - it's a quaint and quiet little town Southwest of Barcelona ... just a 20 minute ride from the airport. (Actually, this ride from the airport is shorter than if you go to Barcelona in traffic!)

Architectural reviews include various views, and cutaways; given greater understanding and better perspective. They are all attractive, if not works of art - honestly.

The travelers' Info. offers good and valid info. on prices, currencies, customs, important words, etc. I used the reviews on resorts, hotel's restaurants and nightclubs, etc. and found they were useful and accurate, and helpful with my touring and site decisions

The books are so well thought out that it has multiple maps, with various lookup tables, and the book's flaps are designed to be used as bookmarks for map pages.

Negative:
The country-wide guides are by definition more general than the specific city guides. So, if you are only going to Barcelona, get the specific "Barcelona" guide (another great guide). If you decide to get the "Spain" guide for your 3, or 4 city tour of Spain, understand that this guide may be a little to general for all your local travel needs. But, of the "country" guides, this one is thorough.

Conclusion:
As the President, CEO of an International Meeting Planning Corporation we have many resources and techniques to learn about places we have meetings / groups at as well as the cities and sights. But, as a traveler, this book really is top notch and I would recommend it to anyone going on a personal trip, or wanting to learn about a city, or location.

Happy Travels!

Best World Atlas on the Planet
Yes, this is one heavy book, but it is most beautiful World Atlas I have yet to see. It portrays the earth in sumptuous detail and with such accuracy it is astounding.

If one could ever be speechless about a book, this might be the one. The word: WOW comes to mind the minute you open this book. It is highly detailed and has more than 750 photographs, 150 diagrams and more than 80,000 geographical place names.

Forget going to the library...just buy this book! You will find it to be extremely useful for researching countries. There is a section that shows all the countries of the world with their current statistics. You can look up the Official name, Formation date, Capital, Population, Total square miles/km, Languages, Religions, Ethnic mix, Government, Currency, Literacy rate and Calorie consumption (3,732 kilocalories in the United States as compared to 3,497 in Austria).

The glossary helps to explain terms like Sea-floor spreading or Tombolo. The inside back cover has all the world's flags. The inside front cover has a key to map pages picture which is such a great feature.

Lavish? You bet! I feel completely spoiled owning this HUGE ATLAS. The INDEX is extensive and the largest one I have ever seen in my life. We are talking page 218-353.

If you love studying the world or have a relative who loves to spend time just dreaming about traveling the world, this makes a wonderful gift. The only thing better than this Atlas would be watching a video or actually traveling.

Great Study Aid.

The Best Atlas by a Pretty Margin!
Dorling Kindersley have redefined what an atlas is, by shifting the emphasis from rather technical cartography (as other atlases have) - to providing a lively range of written explanations, annotated 3-D diagrams, colour photographs, and graphical semi-3D maps, for each region. Their rethinking of the priorities does bring smaller, less detailed maps - but the detail is still more than ample, provided you don't need to know where every last little hamlet and stream is. After buying this atlas, you'll never go back to the old-style ones: it's like upgrading from DOS to Windows.

My credentials: I set out on a quest to find a book like this, and I didn't know whether such a book existed. It was to have maps, photographs, and a detailed realistic write-up, for every country and region in the world. I spent several afternoons scouring the larger bookshops, picking up perhaps hundreds of atlases, maps and travel guides. Then I found this :) And I had lots of money left over.

Content: The entire book, I must say, is very nicely presented, with flowing page layouts and colour everywhere. It is divided into 3 main parts:
1. World overviews.
2. The continents & regional maps.
3. The index.

1. A series of world overviews, as found in most other atlases - the planets, politics, wars, etc. etc, but better. They are graphical and colourful, with many little diagrams & photos. Everything is explained neatly and in plain english.

2. The maps themselves are organised first by the continents, then by regions (a region is typically one country, or a group of countries); some regions are given extra treatment for the more populous areas.

The bias is noticeably western-centric, with more space devoted to Western Europe, the USA, Japan, etc: for example, Europe gets 46 pages, but Africa only gets 18! I would happily pay more money for a more complete & unbiased coverage, and this is my first main gripe (of 2) against this otherwise wonderful book.

* Each continent has a 6+ page introduction with maps & photographs covering: physical geography, climate, history, population, transport, language, industry, natural resources, etc (similar to the world overviews).

* Every regional page offers a mixture of maps, diagrams, photos and text, all in technicolour. Almost all regional pages contain:

- a written introduction, with a small map showing where you are in the world.

- the main map. These are colourful, dramatic, easier to understand than traditional flat-as-a-pancake maps, and come in irregular shapes according to the regional/country boundaries. Every map also has its own scale and key, so there is no need to rummage around for those. But the scales vary considerably and wierdly, like 1:7,750,000 on one page, and 1:7,000,000 on the next, and obviously the maps have been scaled to whatever fits nicely on the page, with no concern for standardising them. This makes it difficult to compare 2 different maps, or to develop a natural sensibility for reading them. (This is my 2nd gripe).

- about 6 mini-photographs of interesting landscapes or cultural features - with explanations.

- a small physical-geography map, showing the main mountain ranges, rivers, and areas to note (which are annotated with fascinating little descriptions, often with photographs).

- a small land-use map.

- a small map of transport routes and industry.

- sometimes another small diagram or two to explain things.

* It also contains statistics & flags for every country.

* My UK edition also includes a 24-page atlas-within-an-atlas (with its own index) for the british isles.

3. The index covers all of place-names & natural features found on the maps, and is also very nicely done, telling you the page, grid ref, country, & lat/long for each entry.

* Summary. Much thought and intelligence has gone into this book. It gets 5 stars for being *easily* the best atlas I could find on my little quest, despite my 2 gripes.

Even people who wouldn't normally bother buying an atlas, should consider buying this: it sits well near the television, for a quick glance whenever there is a global news story, or a documentary about some remote place.

It is interesting that Dorling Kindersley should be the people to make this leap forward, having always primarily made books for children, while the other publishers continue to slave away at their overly-detailed technical maps!

Everything I needed to Know about the World
This book makes you want to know more about the world, by showing detailed maps as well as pictures and short essays that descibe the regions. The stuff on Russia is really good beacuse I didn't know much about the geography of the country. It makes me want to go travelling round the world (although the atlas is probably a little too big to take with me). Great book.
