Beautiful
This book really does show a unique perspective on Cats. I think that it would make a great addition to school classrooms as another way to introduce children to the animal kingdom.

Super!
My baby loves looking at all the pictures in this book. She puts her fingers on different things for me to name them. Soon I think I'll be doing the pointing and she'll be doing the naming! These pages are plenty busy enough for even older preschoolers to have fun looking at.

Fine, needs OT genealogy diagrams & less backdrop emphasis
I had to be patient wading through all the initial descriptions of the backdrop of daily life before finally coming to the actual Bible coverage. Through the first half, this didn't seem to be a book focusing on the Bible at all -- just the mundane daily-life background of the Bible, raising the question of what is meant by "Bible Companion".

I was expecting more coverage of the OT stories and a little more coverage of the NT stories, and less coverage of the backdrop of daily life. Given the limited space, I'm surprised this book isn't primarily organized in terms of the OT and NT stories, only secondarily interweaving a little of daily life within that primary framework.

The text is tiny, but that turned out to not be a problem for me.

This book has some maps but really needs a couple genealogy diagrams covering the figures who are listed in the Who's Who section. The book depends heavily on the un-illustrated Who's Who section in the back, losing the publisher's strength which is in integrated graphic/text communication. The Who's Who text-only appendix, with sentences defining the relationships among the characters, is hard to grasp and retain. A diagrammatic presentation of personal relationships would enable such a short book to communicate the stories more effectively, in a graspable way.

It's a fine book, but I hope the publisher makes these changes. I commend DK Publishing for taking on the fun challenge of communicating so much in such a small space -- and I encourage them to continue refining their approach. To get the full potential out of the book, I'll need to read it a second time, working from the text-only appendixes to the graphical matter in the main part of the book.

Eyewitness handbooks can't be beat!
Eyewitness handbooks are wonderful. I bought this one based on my success with others on such subjects as aquarium fish, horses, and other garden books. I have plenty of plant books with black and white drawings or simple word descriptions of the plant (NOT very useful) but I had none with beautiful full color photographs. This book is organized by the color (white, yellow, purple/blue) and the size of the plant (large, medium or small) This was not terribly helpful to me as I was trying to find plants that were suitable for certain areas of my yard: full sun, part shade, etc. However, I adjusted and soon came to like the arrangement. I found the index useful, although some scientific names will forever be foreign to me. There was an attempt to list common names with a "see...." reference, but this was not thorough. This, when weighed against the stengths of the book (ie the color photography, details of each plant, overall organization and comprehensive coverage), does not detract from its usefulness and my appreciation of the book as a whole. This book is an excellent reference book that will be a credit to my (small) library. Buy it and enjoy!

Handy for garden beginners...
This little book is a handy introduction for gardeners who are interested in adding bulbs to their flower beds. The book has a heavy-duty plastic cover so you can take it outside and use it as a guide when you actually plant the bulbs.

The sections are laid out by type, color, and size, and filled with lots of photos that give you an idea of what the plant will look like in flower. Each entry has symbols that indicate soil, light, and water conditions for best growth, as well as space requirements. This is handy because bulbs come from all over the world from dry hot places to cold wet places.

This is a plant book, don't look for design ideas here. Also, the number of entries is limited to what appear to be the most popular bulbs--the ones you are likely to find in the nursery store and general plant catalogues. This book is not an encyclopedia.

Not Just Bulldozers
My three-year-old son is fascinated by earth moving equipment. He wants to know EVERYTHING about how they work and what they do. This book does not disappoint. It's heavily detailed, and extremely informative about all sorts of equipment (not just bulldozers). I found that taking a cross-section out of a ship we built from legos helped him understand what was happening in the pictures better. The text can be a bit boring, and by around the hundredth reading it can get irritating. But reading different sections of the book keeps it fresh, and the amazing amount of genuinely interesting information packed into this little book (and subsequently into my son's little head) makes it all worthwhile. The glossary in the back makes all the concepts involved really understandable, even to me, my son's non-technical mom. If your child is into diggers and dumpers, this book is a must.
