--Very Helpful--
Right before I began taking yoga, a friend gave this book to me as a gift and, now into my second yoga session, I still find myself referring to this little manual.

101 ESSENTIAL TIPS: YOGA is a perfect handbook to use when trying to get an understanding of the world of yoga and why it's so useful for the body. It doesn't bombard the reader with too much information, but explains what the beginner needs to know about breathing techniques, various exercises, yoga poses and the importance of meditation. The photographs and illustrations are an important feature of the book and serve me as a reminder in how to achieve a pose that I'm learning in my class.

Highly recommended.

Best book for beginers
If you want to start practicing yoga and don't know where to start, or have been doing yoga, but want an idea for a basic routine, this is the book for you!

It have very good pictures, and explanations on postures. It shows the Sun Salutation (basic warm up), shoulder, headstand and other sequences.

Very comprehensive at such an amazing price.

Excellent Book for yoga beginners
I found this book to be precise and informative. It starts with the 1st step, the 'Sun Salutation', and illustraits various other yoga stances, and how to get to those stances. It is a must have for anyone who wants to know more about yoga and streching.

Great guide
Just returned from a trip to Nice, Villefranche, St Jean Cap Ferrat, and Monte Carlo and this is the guide we lived by.

Easy Travel Companion
We recently traveled throughout Provence and used this guide to determine what to stop and see and what to miss. Great pictures, up-to-date information about costs and hours. We use this series whenever we travel.

Plateau de Valensole, sigh.....
Oh, this book made me wish I was in France. Pictures of Lavender fields, sweeping views of the Plateau de Valensole (the largest lavender-growing areas of Provence), the Vieux Port looking south, with Notre-Dame de-la-Garde that I didn't have time to see because we were too busy shopping for pretty French clothes and soaps.

You will be delighted with information on The Riviera, The Alpes Maritimes, The Var, The Iles D'Hyères, Bouches-Du-Rhône, Nîmes, Vaucluse and Alpes-De-Haute-Provence.

This book is part of a series of books called: Eyewitness Travel Guides. Each book is a graphically exciting and visually pleasing guidebook. You will find concise maps, carefully selected hotels, restaurants and cafes in all price ranges, 800-full color photographs, unique cutaways and floor plans to help you explore public buildings and landmarks and town-by-town information on sights, beaches, cafe life, markets, and festivals.

I started reading: "Cassis is a lovely little port, tucked into limestone hills.....Cassis is still known for its excellent seafood." pg. 153 (Is that why I ordered two helpings? :) We sat in the sun at an outdoor restaurant and had the most amazing fish I have ever had in my life.

They brought the fish out to us and then we selected what looked like freshly caught fish. I am sure it was because it was quite delicious. We wandered around and found a bakery (la boulangerie) and a place to buy olive oil and garlic. Of all the places I went, Cassis stands out as a place I would want to stay a bit longer. We found it quite by accident and even though you might take this book along, I think sometimes the places you find just by accident are going to be the most memorable.

If you want to visit Provence or if you have been there, this book will serve as an excellent way to wet your appetite or as a journey of delightful remembrance.

If you don't hear from me again, I went to live in an idyllic spot in Provence. Sigh....

P.S. 1. The French Phrase Book ISBN: 0-7894-3234-X is a great little book of essential words and phrases.

P.S. 2. Provence: A Country Almanac by Louisa Jones is not to be missed as a coffe table collectable book.

P.S. 3. To learn how to make those French desserts: Chocolate by Patricia Lolusada

P.S. 4. The French Dictionary ISBN: 0-7894-4494-1 has over 50,000 words and phrases.

P.S. 5. If you want to see a cute movie: Go look up the reviews for: A Year in Provence. What I loved was that Peter was a writer and he is always trying to finish his novel. His wife helps him on a writing assignment about Provence and that is when things turn more into a mystery. If you know of any movies or books on Provence, feel free to e-mail the information to me. I would be delighted!

Really great reference book!
This book is a must for every sewer's library. Lots and lots of sewing techniques explained in great detail and with pictures! Recommended for all skill levels!

A Sewing Novice
I shopped around a lot and even checked a few books out from the library and this book was the best I found for someone like me who is learning to sew. It has lots of pictures and a glossary that includes even the most basic sewing terms. Happy sewing!

The Complete book of sewing-A practical step-by-guide to sew
This book probably is not for the beginner, but for the sewer who wants to know a technique for a certain problem. It is a step-by-step, pictured, description of techniques to upgrade your sewing. If you've ever wondered how those store-bought clothes are sewed, look in this book.

Lavishly Illustrated Guide to Dog Breeds
If you love dogs, this is a book you will enjoy for the profusion of excellent photographs! It is also packed with good information. Each breed is described in one or two pages with bullet points about its history and character. Color-coded data in the margins tells you the size and weight, temperament, and origin of the breed. But the best part of this book is the collection of full-color, detailed, and very expressive photos.

The book is organized into chapters for "companion dogs, gundogs, herding dogs, hounds, terriers and working dogs." This is a little confusing, at least to a non-breeder. For example, Labrador Retrievers are in the 'Gundogs' chapter and Chow Chows are under 'Working Dogs'. Fortunately, there is an index to assist with locating the dog you want to learn about.

I picked up this book to help me identify the breeds that went into my two adorable mutts. I admit I didn't get very far -- best guess is that one is a Lab-Chow Chow mix and the other is at least part American Pit Bull Terrier. Now that I have this book about breeds, I think I need a "Mutts of the World" book to help me figure out my little monsters!

A Great Place to Start in Researching Purebreds!
The book contains colorful breed pictures, as well as basic informative information about the breeds (i.e. country of origin, first use, origins, height, weight, and temperament). It also gives a tiny bit of history and additional remarks. Use the book as part of your research, maybe as the foundation.

Most-read book in our house!
It may seem kind of silly, but in our household we must have thumbed through the pages of this book about a thousand times! Someone seems to take the book from the bookshelf and leave it lieing on the coffee table each week. Since you never actually read this kind of book cover-to-cover (it's really a fancy picture book), you always seem to find something new.

The handbook is a wonderful guide showing almost every breed imagineable. Approximately one page is dedicated to each breed (there's the occassional 2-page dedication to popular dogs as well as 2 dogs per page for some lesser known breeds). After finding a breed which catches my eye, I enjoy jumping onto the internet to learn more from a dog club's web site. The book may be light on detail, but there's just enough to get you interested to learn more. And the pictures are great.

If you're trying to decide on which breed is right for you, this book may be appropriate as a first step in your decision - but you'll have to go elsewhere to learn more. Make no mistake, there's a lot to learn about each breed which isn't described in this book. After getting some ideas as to which dogs may be right for you, call a breeder or talk to the personnel at your local SPCA.

As a quick picture guide, we have found no better. Compact in size (8.5"x5.5"), it's a great book to carry to a dog show as well.

Great style, but found lacking in substance
This book is almost great. Almost. It tries to give you the best of all worlds-- in depth tours; some local knowledge (restaurants and such); and pictures. As one might expect, the scope becomes to broad to do any of it well. I was disppointed with the tours it gave; it seems like it missed much-- so much so that I bought the Michelin Green guide while there. One of my main gripes is the size of the book-- its too big to fit in any type of pocket. It does however have a slick rain-resistant cover, and the cover folds to become a useful bookmark.

Love those Eyewitness Guides
Whenever I'm getting ready to take a trip, I check to see if there is an Eyewitness Guide for my destination. My husband and I spent one week of a two-week 25th anniversary trip in the Loire Valley and this book was our guide. I love that everything is divided into regions and that you get so many pictures so that you know what you're really going to go see. My main complaint with a lot of other guides is that you have to rely on a short written description and often when you get there, it's nothing like you expected.

There are numerous maps with the sites marked. They also include restaurants and hotels rated by price and region. There's a history of the region in the front of the book.

All of their guides follow the same basic format, so if you travel a lot, there's no surprises between the books.

Excellent! I LOVE IT!
I rode my bike in the Loire Valley. This book helped me in planning the route (along with Michelin Green Book). Wonderful, alluring pictures! Wonderful color code/guide system. Interesting information on the differences on the variety of castles/chateaux and churches & abbeys. Detailed yet concise history. Provides different themed tours for walking or driving. Nice pictursque maps of old towns with interests. It helped me decide which villages to stop for the night. I highly recommend this book! I also have Eyewitness Travel Guide of Paris, London, and Amsterdam. I plan to buy more books on Greece and Italy for my next trip!

Nice for the Big Hitters in Andalusia
My wife and I used this book and Lonely Planet: Spain book for a week in Seville and Cordoba.

We found it to be excellent for the high-points, or must see's, of the area. The photos are excellent in this book. Also, this book is much smaller and easier to carry than either Lonely Planet's or Eyewitness' guides for the entire country.

For non-touristy (or less touristy) things, Lonely Planet has much better depth. We found the two books to complement each other nicely.

By the way, Andalusia is spectacular! Enjoy!

Put it in your suitcase
As always, Eyewitness has the best maps. The coverage of Seville makes it the best guide for that city, period. The coverage of the outlying major areas, such as Granada and Cordoba, should be supplemented with the Cadogan book on Seville, Granada, Cordoba, but the Eyewitness has the best information on eating, shopping, getting around, hotels, and culture survival for Seville. If you are staying in Seville, take this book with you into the streets when you go.

Usual excellent standard
As with all Eyewitness Guides, this is beautifully illustrated and informative. I have to admit I read it AFTER I visited Andalusia, but wish it had been on the market when I did go. It is an excellent armchair travel book. It has certainly whetted my appetite to go back. Retrospective reading always reveals gems you wish you had discovered at the time. One real bonus of Eyewitness guides is that they have PROPER maps, with street indexes integrated into them, unlike some guides which rely on sketch maps, and where the scale can be a bit hit and miss. Another advantage is they don;t attempt to list a "Top Ten" for each place, rather they provide comprehensive coverage, and divide their coverage by locale.

Seeing Sydney
VERY informative. Perhaps too much info. At times I felt I was overloading. Better to have too much though than not enough. This book eliminates the need for any other.

pretty much
I didn't find this guide as useful nor as interesting as others in the series but I suspect it's because Sydney doesn't lend itself to guidebooks in the same way London or Rome do. I left Eyewitness at home, carried Frommer's Sydney guide, and winged it the rest of the way. Eyewitness has the best maps by far, though.

Doesn't make a local cringe
There are some guidebooks which make a local cringe in embarassment! Not this one. It covers pretty much everything that a visitor to this city would want to see and do, and even leads people a little (but not TOO far) off the beaten track. There are suggestions for walks along some of the coastal paths, for example, and it includes places farther afield like captain Cook's Landing Place.

Like all the books in this series, it is lavishly illustrated and the maps are good. I use it for inspiration for weekend activities. It is a good general guidebook, which could be supplemented by more specialised volumes if you want to concentrate on one aspect of Sydney - eg guides to walks around the harbour, or activities specially for children, guides to national parks etc. but this book seems to cover just about everything at least in an introductory sense.

Great info about attractions
This book has great information about attractions, with nice pictures and diagrams, as well as hours of operation and bus stop info. I really like it, but I also need another more comprehensive travel guide such as Rough Guide for detailed info on hotels and such.

A Travel Guide that shows you what you will be seeing
I am seriously toying with the idea of taking a trip to Athens (so I can teach my on-line mythology course from the Acropolis) so I spent some time looking through various travel guides. When it comes to illustrations and graphics, none of the dozen I looked at can compete with this volume from DK Publishers. Of course, if you are familiar with any of the books from DK then you are already well aware that they have made their reputation providing visually stunning volumes. When I first flipped through this book I kept thinking it was a picture book and not a travel guide, and then I wondered why anybody would even need to go to Greece after looking at all of this.

The guide is divided into six sections: (1) Introducing Athens and Mainland Greece; (2) Ancient Greece, which includes historical, culture and mythological details; (3) Athens Area by Area; (4) Mainland Greece Area by Area; (5) Travelers' Needs, which covers where to stay and where to eat; and a (6) Survival Guide of practical and travel information, including a phrase book. You can go through the pages provided above to see exactly how things are laid out. Note: DK has a separate travel guide devoted to the Greek Islands.

I will not contend that this is the only travel guide you would need to plan your trip and/or go to Greece. There are several other travel guides that provide considerably more detail in terms of lodgings and restaurants. However, I would suggest that this is the travel guide you want to take with you while doing sightseeing; the other one can sit in your car, backpack, or whatever. For example, there is a diagram of a Byzantine church that provides more architectural detail than you would ever need to know. Other reviewers, who have actually used this book in Greece, have commented on how a lot of things are not marked in English, which made this volume particularly helpful. That is certainly good to know. However, at this point I am using it to figure out how to maximum the time I would spend there and where else to go besides Athens (obviously Delphi is the other must see place and then, probably, Mycenea).

Excellent guide for tours of Greece
My husband and I only visited the Athens portion of mainland Greece, but thoroughly enjoyed the information provided in this guide. We were able to make the most of our 2-day stay in Athens by self-guiding ourselves through the many historical and cultural monuments and museums in the city. The maps in this guide are very good.

Very useful
Very useful. Got me around from Algarve to Porto, hassle-free and happy.

Great, except for maps!
I have used the Eyewitness Guides a number of times and found the Portugal book excellent as usual with only one complaint.
The hotel and restaurant recommendations were "right on the nose" as far as description of accommodations, kinds of meals, ambiance, and price. I would trust it implicitly. We like the fact that a range in the price and variety is included since sometimes you feel like a big fancy meal with a floor show and sometimes you simply want a quiet place with light food. The same is true of hotels. The visuals, illustrations, layouts and concise backgrounds are wonderful with the most important features of an area highlighted.
The one caveat of the Eyewitness books are their
3-D style maps which are most attractive but sometimes inaccurate. Distances are not included nor are regular city center maps which would be most helpful. In one city (Evora) the map was so confusing, we simply had to park the car and walk. Unfortunately this led to us missing accommodations at a hotel we preferred, as it took so long for us to just orient ourselves to our location. So, while the Eyewitness Guides will always travel with me, I would recommend also taking another guide book with better maps and perhaps a bit more in depth information on the sites.
Incidentally, Portugal is not a well known country to Americans, and it is a charming and romantic country which is undergoing enormous upgrades right now due to European Union funding. We recommend exploring here.

The best travel book I have ever read
Words don't do this book justice. A long time lover of Lonely Planet guides, I was attracted to the nice pictures of this Eyewitness guide :-) And it's actually the pictures that make this book so great. The graphics have an appeal that just make you want to keep on reading it. It gives you good visual points of reference to find your way around. It helps you prioritize your trip based on more than the writer's prose. There is plenty of detail, more emphasizing the places to see and things to do than details like hotels and restaurants. After saying that, please note that the restaurant guide at the back of the book recomends 5-6 places in each location, and I have yet to be dissapointed by any of the places. After my travels, this book be a prize on my bookshelf. I will definately try buy the Italian edition in preparation for my Italian trip.

Use Common Sense First
The pictures are great and the ideas are helpful - but use your own good sense first. I'm a first time mom and used it as a reference the first time I gave my baby a bath. It recommends the water be 85 degrees... Umm... NO!!! As my baby very vocally told me. (That's colder than body temperature for crying out loud!) The second bath I just did what I felt was right and my li'l guy was *so* much happier.

Good for what it is.
This book provides the minimum amount of information needed, but it is very useful for those topics that are covered, such as changing, cleaning, etc. your baby.
Lots of topics are missing that could have been included, but all in all this was a good buy.
Get it used if you can.

Great reference book for new Moms
I bought this book because I wanted a quick reference book on how to do certain things with the baby. Like when to start feeding the baby solid foods. Although I already have one other child, it had been 6 years, so I needed something to refer back to in case I forgot certain things. It is a great book for the first time Mom or for any Mom that just needs a quick refresher course. The only thing I didn't expect was that it was so small. But truthfully I am really not that disapointed because it fits well in a diaper bag.
