Mystery Play
When I first read Mystery Play, I wanted to discuss it with everyone I knew! It's a smartly written American satire that encompasses all of America's "demise"...sex, politics, identity issues, or, well, just politics. =) Set at a cocktail party hosted by a senator's wife, the party goers, a Harvard professor, a sexy Hollywood actress, the senator's schizophrenic son(s), and of course, the senator and his flaky wife try to solve a series of murders that take place as a arrogant"Mystery Writer" controls and participates in the play's action simultaneously. And what would the "Mystery Play" be without the shady Butler? Anyone who likes a good satire should definitely check this one out! Its very clever!

a real multilingual dictionary
Accurate, resourceful, and very easy to use best describe this book. I am a student of sign language in eastern Switzerland, where many different cultures and language come together and it has been used by several of my fellow students as a supplement (the Swiss German sign language has about 50% of the same or similar signs). As a gift for our 2 deaf teachers the class has decided to give them this particular book as a going away present. The index in the back of the book lets the reader of any of a number of languages quick access to the sign he/she is looking up. Though the hard back copy is somewhat bulky it`s well worth the money!

On the Interpretation of the Melodies of Claude Debussy (Vox Musicae Series, No. 2)
Published in Paperback by Pendragon Pr (June, 1998)
Authors: Jane Bathori and Linda Laurent
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

From the Horse's Mouth
Although interpretation is an elusive term that defies precise definition, Jane Bathori's book on the interpreting the melodies of Debussy must be considered a primary reference to these songs. Originally published in 1953, this small manual has been translated by Linda Laurent, a distinguished Bathori scholar. Jane Bathori played a tremendous role in the development of 20th century song and was perhaps the most sought-after interpreter of vocal music of her day. She premiered more than 100 songs by many composers, including Debussy. This book, one of the first of its kind written, is an invaluable reference by a fascinating personality in vocal music, and it is good to have it available in an English translation--for good measure, Pendragon has also published the original French text with the English.

The Orchestra on Record, 1896-1926 : An Encyclopedia of Orchestral Recordings Made by the Acoustical Process

Author: Claude Graveley Arnold
Amazon base price: $139.95

a definitive reference book
This is one of the most detailed general discographies ever published. The author lists orchestral music recorded before 1926 by composer, establishing the authoritative title of the work, the precise identification of the performers, the recording date, issue date, original 78rpm issue numbers, and all LP and CD reissues (the last in footnotes). This is so much more than copying catalogue data. The information is authentic, the result of many years of research, not only by the author, but in consultation with a broad range of experts who have assisted. The format is readible. The author has left no stone unturned.

clever, engaging, should be in print!
My younger daughter brings this book home from kindergarten every single day. She and her sister pore over it at the breakfast table. There are so many clever things about this book, things that are spot on. I love the way the pictures are displayed as if they are in a museum, and the museum-goers are doing things that echo the contents of the pictures. The transparencies that turn Michelangelo into Adam are clever; I also love the 2 versions of De la Tour's *Cardsharp* where you have to figure out what's different about them. The Holbein anamorphosis is pretty clear to my 6-year-old. I have a PhD in art history and have published about some of these paintings, and frankly I am just thrilled to death that this book has somehow made them exciting to my children. I wish I could get the others in the series--they really should be in print.

The photos make my 2 year old daughter giggle non-stop
I bought this book for my 2 year old daughter Sarah. We don't read the words much yet, but the photos are outrageously funny to her. She giggles till it hurts. This book stays on the coffee table.

My only physics book
Although I am a physicist and possess many books, for a long time my collection contained only a single book related to physics: Photons and Atoms. It is the most pedagogical text to be found on the fundamental aspects of the quantized interaction of matter with light. It's concise, clear, and convincing. The reader is never left mystified about any technical detail: no assumptions or approximations are left unexplained or swept under the rug. Yet, in spite of the high technical level the text is full of insights and simple intuitive pictures as well. Worth mentioning are also the exercises in each Chapter, which are remarkably useful and rewarding, Moreover, the solutions are given and display the same clarity of style and insightful remarks as the main text. The main emphasis of the book is on the nonrelativistic formulation of QED, but, of course, there is also a chapter devoted to the relativistic version that includes a description of how to take in a proper fashion the non-relativistic limit. Also questions of gauge, such as concerning the often confusing choice between "p.A" and "r.E" are treated, and it is, e.g., explicitly shown how in numerical problems the two are not always equivalent, as approximations made are not necessarily gauge invariant. Is there anything bad to say about this book? Almost not: for a while I had the impression that this book was the only one without any typographical errors, but in the meantime I have discovered 2. To be a bit more serious, maybe there is something: the book focuses on fundamental issues and, hence, if you expect ---especially given the title of the book---to read about problems such as spontaneous emission or laser-induced ionization of atoms, then you will be disappointed. In that case, you will have to check out the companion volume: atom-photon interactions. But hey, that's not such a bad book either.
