importance of the structuralist approach in imagery
The BĂ©rard's school brought structuralism into the study of imagery. But this book also studied categories of greek thought which are very often neglected, and revealed their presence in the athenian everyday life. This book was sold at the Louvre in Paris and received a tremendous success. It's impossible to find in Europe.I can only encourage every classical archaeologist to read this book, and the pubhlisher to print a new edition. A classical schoolbook!

The Classic Chinese Cookbook
I purchased this book over 20 years ago and it continues to be my favorite of its kind. The recipes for Hot and Sour soup, as well as "Happy Union" have been crowd pleasers over the years. I recently shared it with a chinese-american friend of mine, a superb cook, whose parents owned a restaurant, and he loved it! I am looking for a copy for him as a surprise. Enjoy!

Sensitive portrait of a little-known part of our heritage.
I accidentally came across this book at a gay studies workshop a few years ago. I had never heard of the author, and have yet to encounter anyone else who has read the book. It is an autobiography ... the author grew up in Missouri in the late 1800s and writes of his coming of age as a gay man in a time and place where such a thing was literally unknown and even unimaginable. The writing is clear and direct. The story is simple and touching. I very much recommend this little book to anyone who is interested in learning more about our history as a people. It is not a book about neurosis or alienation. It is the life and words of a man who I would very much like to have known.

Claude Kirk, A Remarkable Conservative Governor
The book "Claude Kirk and the Politics of Confrontation" is an extremely interesting view of an interesting man, warts and all. A conservative Florida Governor who was honest and extremely blunt, he was probably the last politician in recent history to leave office less financially affluent than when he entered political life. He shot from the hip and didn't watch to see a windsock of read the latest opinion poll. Sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong, but he always took responsibility for his actions.

His sense of humor sometimes bordered on the bizarre. He once showed up for a campaign speech on horseback and loved to play jokes on the press that were not always well taken. Once he baited the press and had them hang around all day for an important announcement. After hours of wading through mundane business that did not interest them, he announced: 'And now for the important announcement, our astronauts will now carry real Florida orange juice into space instead of Tang!'

The book is insightful and illustrates the never-dull life of a colorful politician.

A rare insight
There are many books that claim to capture the 'real' Monet. However, this book not only captures but explores the true nature of this classical artist. I was lucky enough to have purchased this tome to enchance my art book collection. If you have an art lover in your home I would strongly suggest this title. Not only will this enhance your art collection but this is a great conversation piece if noticed on your coffee table. If your passion for art stirs your soul then this book should be on your wish list

Helps fill a critical gap in children's literature
As the mother of a six year-old, I'm grateful for the appearance of this series, The Life and Work of... There aren't many art books for children this age; most are simply too long and involved for young children. This series is filled with large type text, beautiful reproductions, captivating period photos and, most important, a colorful narrative that is sure to appeal to children 4-8. Although my son is quite an accomplished reader for his age, he would never have managed the pronunciation of many foreign words in this text: Monet's wife Camille Doncieux, the Thames River, Rouen, etc. Given the helpful glossary at the end, I can't for the life of me understand why they didn't add a pronunciation guide. Still I won't take a star away from this series for the error, because I believe the book is more profitably shared by parent and child than read on its own. Children will laugh on their own at the sight of the pigeon on Monet's head, but they will need you to help them get more out of the paintings.

The must have guide for all aspiring High Sierra climbers.
This is the 2nd edition of Moynier's and Fiddler's High Sierra "best of" guide. John Moynier and Claude Fiddler are very experienced Sierra climbers/guides with hundreds of routes and dozens of firsts to their respective credits. The authors have painstakenly selected over 100 outstanding routes ranging from moderate class 3 peak bagging exercises to Grade V walls and Grade VI linkup routes. The represented climbs are among the most popular and most sought after climbs in the range. Climbers of all skills and goals will benefit from this guide. They provide topos, verbal approach, climbing and descent descriptions and a rich historical perspective on climbing in the Range of Light.

Improvements in this guide include more detailed topos, a larger selection of alternate routes, more historical anecdotes, and a refined selection of climbs.

While this book is an excellent stand alone guide, many climbers would benefit from RJ Secor's Peaks, Passes and Trails as a companion guide.

I rate this book 5 of 5. Most climbing guidebooks are dry material... just the facts Ma'am. But this one colors all of the technical data with stories of old heros and epic struggles. Buy it so these guys will be tempted to write more!
