Piano essential for advanced students
This is one of those sets that I think, if I were stranded on a desert island with a Steinway (and a good piano tuner), I could delve into for years with little other music.

These short pieces are excellent for sight-reading difficult passages with many key changes and unexpected accidentals, for intricate harmony and for expression of mood. The names are evocative of feelings and sights, such as an underwater cathedral, bells in the evening air, wind through heather and the like.

Though short pieces of a few pages, each provides a particular challenge to the piano student, as well as being appropriate for concert encores or intimate playing.

Composition and Resistance
Published in Paperback by Boynton/Cook (October, 1991)
Authors: Claude Mark Hurlbert and Michael Blitz
Amazon base price: $27.50

Make this book available!
Why isn't every teacher of composition, interdisciplinary writing, cultural studies (etc.) reading this book? And why is it so hard to get hold of? Hurlbert and Blitz provide a collection of essays by composition scholars AND newcomers to the field that demonstrate how bloody hard it is to teach writing and to make sense of a drive for literacy in a society that doesn't seem to value writing. Hurlbert and Blitz also supply transcripts of conversations among these writers-- the real stuff, not phony-baloney oratories about how perfectly they teach their little classes! I have been to those conferences and discussion groups and am bored stupid by the way that composition teachers like to pretend that they have found "THE WAY" to do it! Composition and Resistance tells a different story. It tells us that teaching writing is a struggle, that it doesn't always work, that, at best, it's a process of recognizing and overcoming "resistances" from students and teachers alike. A very good and important book that should be required reading in graduate programs in rhetoric and composition!

New Paradigm For Evangelism
This book is helping change our church and the way we do outreach and evangelism. The author's premise is that we cannot reach the world for Christ if we are not reaching our families, friends or inner-circles first. If there are any broken relationships or "ruptured relationships" in a christian's life, then we are not able to go and share the gospel message honestly with anyone. It is a powerful book that is very blunt and sometimes slaps you in the face with the honesty and insight of the author.

Concise Norton Recorded Anthology of Western Music: Short Recordings

Authors: Claude Palisca and Donald Jay Grout
Amazon base price: $63.90
Used price: $32.95

A Great Music History Reference
This collection is a great tool for anyone involved in music history. It contains music from the best composers of every major era of music, from Ancient Greece to Twentieth Century. True, the selections are shorter and fewer than in the other two Norton Anthology volumes, but this collection contains the best of each of those. The Concise Norton Recorded Anthology is definately the one to chose if you only want four comprehensive CD's instead of twelve.

Since this collection contains such a variety of music, there is a song for whatever you are in the mood for: sad, happy, thought-provoking, you name it. Whether you are studying or teaching music, or just want one collection with a wide variety of music, the Concise Norton Recorded Anthology of Western Music is a great choice.

Construction (First Discovery Book X)
Published in Hardcover by Cartwheel Books (March, 1997)
Authors: Philippe Biard, Claude Delafosse, Gallimard Jeunesse, Gallimard Jeunesse, and Scholastic Books
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $4.79

A wonderful children's book
Construction is one of the many First Discovery books that all feature beautiful drawings, both on normal paper and on transparencies that cleverly fit on both opposing pages. Although recommended for ages 4-8, you can actually read it to children younger than that. As soon as they have learned not to tear the pages, they can browse through it themselves. The book depicts various aspects of construction, such as demolition, foundation laying, concrete mixing, cranes, tunnel building, road construction, etc. The pictures are accompanied by just the right amount of text, so that children can learn the names of the described items. Although not 100% toddler-proof, the book is quite sturdy and should survive a significant amount of abuse. Highly recommended.

Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms II: Advanced Theory and Bundle Methods (Grundlehren Der Mathematischen Wissenschaften, Vol 306)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (January, 1996)
Authors: Jean-Baptiste Hiriart-Urruty and Claude Lemarechal
Amazon base price: $115.00
Average review score:

A good reference to the bundle method
Lemarechal and Kiwiel introduced the bundle method in the 80's as a means to optimise nonsmooth convex functions. Recently Christoph Helmberg developed a spectral bundle approach to solving semidefinite programs, by rewriting SDP's with a constant trace as eigenvalue optimisation problems. The Spectral bundle methods outperforms the traditional interior point approaches to SDP's as these methods are typically unable to handle large SDP's with a large number of constraints.

This book provides a detailed description of the bundle method for nondifferentiable optimisation. I am going to purchase a copy of this book (I already have volume one with me) and can only strongly recommend the book to anyone interested in nondifferentiable optimisation and semidefinite programming.

"My story, not His-story."
Creoles of color in the bayou country, by Karl Brasseaux, is a very informative piece of documented history. I am bias for this book because it hits closer to home, making reference to my grand father generations ago. I have always known a rich but loosely knitted and sometimes confusing history of my family. Karl have given me the tools to dig much deeper into my ancestry. Now I can piece together better my past. Merci vraiment Monsier Brasseaux de me presenter a mon grand pere, Zenon Rideau. Those who call creoles the lost people, are obviously lost themselves.

Cäsars Druide : Roman
Published in Unknown Binding by W. Heyne ()
Author: Claude Cueni
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Amazing
First, let it be said i didn't read it in german, I got a spanish version. Now, to the book. I've always found Celts a most fascinating "civilization", and needless to say, the Roman is one of the most interesting things any lover of history can read about, and in a way, it can still be related to our days. Claude Cueni does a great job at portraying how the romans, mostly short with 1.6m average height would manage to conquer the whole Celtish territory by the use of organization and union among the empire.

Cueni makes a great job because his book is well researched, includes one of the most interesting conquests and characters in history, specifically Julius Caesar in the conquest of gaul, but he alsos manages to describe the Celtish culture with a light sense of humor. A most recommended item for anyone who likes historical novels.
