An excellent text for Fourier Analysis
I bought this book hoping to find a self-contained, semi-rigorous introduction to Fourier Analysis and its applications, and indeed I'm very pleased with the purchase. One aspect of the book's format that I enjoyed in a self-study setting is how it is partitioned into lessons (which are in turn divided into chapters). Indeed, it seemed that each lesson took me about 60-90 minutes to absorb, which is the average time most students (including myself) devote to one lesson.

Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was the fact that, on one hand the author took the time to introduce mathematically sophisticated ideas such as Lesbesgue measure and Hilbert spaces in order to make the proofs run more smoothly, but on the other there where more practical lessons on the fast Fourier transform, filters, and even wavelet analysis (last lesson). Such a blend of theory and practice in a relatively compact text seems quite rare.

Finally, I highly recommend this book for students of all levels; but especially to graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

Charm, passion, integrity
This collection of Truffaut's letters is an extraordinary portrait of a man of enormous charm, passion, integrity and (sometimes brutal) honesty. The immediacy of his writing makes his voice emanate from these pages. What an enormous privilege it must have been to count oneself among his friends. And what a daunting foe he must have been as well.

An inspiring, invigorating book.

What is Personal Revival Like?
Henry's understanding of revival is deepened by his personal experience of revival in western Canada in the 1970's. This is a thoroughly biblical treatment of the ways of God in revival.

For cat lovers!
Do you have a friend who adores cats? I do! I thought she would use this postcard book to send notes, but she couldn't part with it! So she keeps this gift on her bedside table. I know of some cat lovers who use these photographs for decor. Audrey Hepburn is featured here with her cat named Cat from Breakfast at Tiffany's. There are a total of thirty postcard photos showing cats in amusing takes. A fun gift for felline pals!

Some of the Best Postcards I've Found
You won't know whether to keep em or send em to your friends. There are 15 different postcards (2 copies of each.) They are all real photos, in black and white. They have a few lines of text on the back telling the year the photo was taken, who took it, where it was taken, and usually why the dog is doing what it's doing. All of the pc's are cute, and most are funny, but in a subtle way. They are suitable to mail to just about everyone, but anyone who likes dogs or has one will especially enjoy them.

excellent, but...
Simon's style takes some getting used to and a great deal of patience and concentration by the reader. Persistence pays off with insights into the waste and uselessness of war, not a book for those interested in a just a good read.

Give a Boy a Gun
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (July, 1990)
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Gripping reading.
"Give A Boy A Gun" is the story of two boys, Gary and Brendan, who are intelligent, friendly children. As they enter junior high, a caste system emerges, and they find themselves among the undesirables. This is a result of nothing they have done, but only because they are "different." Gary and Brendan soon become the victims of pranks, teasing and increasingly cruel treatment from the "popular" kids. This treatment is virtually ignored by school staff. As a result, the boys become angrier and more volatile. Soon they are talking about killing their tormentors and a gradual plan unfolds. During their sophomore year on the night of a school dance, Gary and Brendan take the school hostage.

The book contains the voices of Gary and Brendan, their fellow students, friends, teachers and parents. This is done through interviews, e-mail messages and the boys' diaries and suicide notes. Gradually, through these voices, the reader witnesses the events that drive Gary and Brendan to their crime. It is difficult to tell that this is a work of fiction. The plot closely parallels what readers have come to know of the events of the Columbine school shooting.

Nearly every page contains facts on handgun and/or school violence. At the end of the story, Strasser has included key events in the gun control issue as well as a list of school shootings that occurred during the writing of the book.

"Give a Boy a Gun" should be required reading for teachers and other school officials. Parents should read it as well. It would be appropriate for young adults of either sex. The recommendation for adolescents must be guarded due to today's "copycat" incidents, although neither boys' actions are glorified. This is not a book with a happy ending. However, it grimly illustrates the effects of bullying, the junior high/high school caste system and the hesitation of society to accept anyone or anything outside of the dictated norms.

Exceptional short book by one of the best
I have always considered Traunecker's work to be of the highest quality. He has an insight into the mechanics of ancient Egyptian cosmologies, theologies, and mythologies that is both direct and free of unnecessary random (and rambling) thought. His assessments are clinical but always interesting, and his work on the El Qa'la temple site is NOT to be missed by anyone who can get their hands on IFAO's pub. Be that as it may, this short book packs a scholarly punch. All of Traunecker's hard-earned, on-site assessments of the gods of ancient Egypt -- their cults, qualities, relevance, and destinies -- can be found in rather tidy, enlightening fashion. A must-have quick reference for many of its tidbits...though Dr. Traunecker does contradict at least one or two minor points he previously asserted in some of his published work. Bottom line -- Immortals (and Immortalettes) of Ancient Egypt from one of the best pros in the business! Get it.

The Grass

A modern masterpiece
It's a mystery why Claude Simon is not more widely read in the U.S. A recent visit to the largest bookstore in San Francisco revealed not one copy of any of his books, and he is hardly an unknown or obscure author (Nobel Prize winner in 1985). It would certainly not be an eccentric view, and one I would not be the first to suggest, that he could easily be ranked close to the "big four" of 20th Century literature (Beckett, Faulkner, Joyce, Proust) and based on the four Simon novels I have read, I would agree. "The Grass" is a great place to start with Simon. It is his fourth novel, but the second translated into English. ("The Wind", translated a year earlier, is also a good starting point) It is helpful to read this novelist in chronological order, as it is with most important authors, but even more here as Simon's style has considerably evolved over the course of his career. Also, as this novel is part of a five-book cycle (the "Reixach Cycle") in which some of the characters reappear in other books, it is best to read them in order. His reputation as a "difficult" writer is somewhat undeserved, and no more than ordinary alertness will allow the reader to enjoy an incredibly supple and rich experience. The translations are excellent, as far as I can tell, judging from my limited reading of him in French, and are mostly by the poet Richard Howard, as is "The Grass." This novel tells of a post-World War II family in France, largely three women, and the narrative is loosely constructed around their memories and experiences, particularly those of a young woman who describes the journey towards death of her husband's aunt. The book, as other Simon novels, is very death-haunted and are filled with a sense of melancholy and dread. The descriptions of nature and the countryside are amazingly lyrical. Simon's heroic experiences as a volunteer on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and as a prisoner of war in WW2 and a member of the French resistance also show up in his fiction, especially "The Palace" and "The Flanders Road" which I also highly enjoyed. This was the first Simon novel I read, and I definately intend to read the others.
