Early Flemish Painting - Frere, Jean-Claude
During the 15th century, in a small area of France known in modern days as Burgundy, there lived and worked a small group of exceptional painters. They created some of the very finest and most beautiful works of art ever made. The Van Eyck brothers, Rogier Van der Weyden, Robert Campin, and Hugo Van der Goes, among others, pioneered oil painting. Their work has never, (in my opinion), been surpassed. The paintings are beautifully reproduced in this book, the colors glow with rich intensity. Abandon all preconceptions! Open this book and radically alter your estimate of human creative potential!

Les Miserables Easy Play
This book is so amazing! I am a singer and novice piano player who is madly in love with the music from Les Miserables. The normal vocal selection book is difficult to play, especially my favorite song STARS which is laden with a million sharps. The Easy Piano book makes it easy to play the songs while singing along. There are even fingering guidelines at the more difficult parts. Yet, the beauty of the music retained. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to play beautiful music and is a novice or perhaps even intermediate paino player.

Elixir of Life Manuscripts (The Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Vol Xiii)

Essential For Hawthorne Readers
The Elixir Of Life Manuscripts include Septimius Felton; or The Elixir Of Life, The Dolliver Romance, Dr. Grimshawe's Secret, and The Ancestral Footstep. The first three very directly characterize an archetype for scientists that show up throughout other works by Hawthorne. The theme of the Ancestral Footstep, which is also interwoven as a plot in the other three works, surrounds a family secret which either leads the scientist figure to the discovery of the Elixir of Life, or entitles him to an inheritance. It is significant that none of these works were ever completed -- however, all are complete and distinct stories. Hawthorne usually planned out a plot so well that he did not need more than one draft to complete a romance. He clearly struggled with the themes of these works, since he never satisfied himself with either of his four drafts. I highly recommend these works as reading material for those who enjoy Hawthorne, or those who are interested in the study of the scientist or seeker in Hawthorne's works.

An Excellent Collection of Current Scholarship in Islamics
The Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an represents the most current knowledge available regarding Islam and Qur'anic Studies. Jane Dammen Mcauliffe has done an excellent job compiling contributions from an impressive list of scholars. Andrew Rippin, G.R. Hawting, Patricia Crone, Herbert Berg, Bowering, Beatrice Greundler, and a host of others all weigh in on issues ranging from the Chronology of the Qur'an to its Compilation; and from Exegetical issues to the controversial questions of the Origins of the Qur'an. Excellent Scholarship marks the first volume's entries on the topics of Arabic Scripts, Language, and Paleography. It draws on recent research and scholarship, including the "paper grave" of manuscripts discovered in Sana'a Yemen which are currently being analyzed by German Professor Gerhard Puin. This first available volume covers topics from "A" through "D", and makes many references to future entries in the volumes which are to follow. While the entries are based on thorough research and academic study, several of the conclusions and observations will be quite controversial in the Muslim community, particularly those which call into question the reliability of Muslim Literary Traditions, and those which are damaging to the traditional understandings of the nature of the Qur'an as a monolithic, unevolved (or even uncreated) source of Divine Revelation. This volume, and those which follow, are certain to establish themselves as instant classics in the libraries of scholars and academic students of Islam around the world.

Some of Debussy's best music
For years, due to copywrite issues, "The Children's Corner" suite was only available in a French edition. Now it's here, in an affordale Dover edition, along with some rarer piano solos.

"Children's Corner" ranges from playable ("Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum" and "The Little Shepherd" and "Doll's Lullaby" to the evilly tricky "Snow is Dancing" made famous by Tomita in an electronic version. The suite was written for Debussy's daughter and is utterly charming and really fun to play. The etude's from Book II are incomplete here, but have some of the nices works, along with a beautiful berceuse.

If you play piano and love the Impressionist composers, this is a must-have.

Des Grives aux Loups
I read this book in French years ago and remember it so well. It's French title is "Des Grives aux Loups." I had to look up words on every page, but still it was enjoyable reading. I decided to look for it in English, and am happy to find it. I may read it again in English this time.

The characters and historical setting are wonderful, and memorable. When I finished the book, I missed the characters. I loved how the family remained close through the years, in spite of their many differences that at times caused major rifts. I read all three books in the trilogy, which take you through three generations of the family and all the technological changes going on in the 20'th century. I would recommend the trilogy to anyone. I hope you can find it in the language you want.

I plan to purchase four additional books in this series today, as Christmas presents.

Four Dimensional Vistas - 1916

Clear and Beautifully Written
The text lays a foundation and progresses beautifully to explain how visible, everyday perception provides only a small slice of the universe as a whole, and chronicles scientific and mystical efforts to acheive a greater understanding of reality. Bragdon draws examples from everyday life and uses various understandable analogies. Revised in the 1920's to account for the development of the theory of relativity, and also drawing on eastern religion, the book is pertinent to modern scientific developments and has not been dated by progress.

Also Reccomended:
The Holographic Universe, Michael Talbot
The Dancing Wu Li Masters, Gary Zukav
